But with only the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Crs Epov and Bell in attendance, Mayor West declared the meeting could not proceed as a quorum, requiring six Councillors, had not been reached.

At a workshop held in December last year, Councillors advised the first date they were all available to meet in 2018 would be 24 January.

Despite this, Crs Epov and Bell notified the Mayor and fellow Councillors on 2 January of their request for an Extraordinary meeting.

According to Council, under the Code of Meeting Practice, a meeting must be called within 14 days of a request being lodged.

Responding to questions on social media, Cr Bell said the meeting was called to formally accept Glenn Hanford’s shock resignation, appoint an Acting General Manager, and determine the process

and timeline to recruit a replacement.

“When Councillors stated at the December workshop when they were available in regards to a meeting, we were then unaware of the General Manager’s resignation,” she said.

THE $72,000 project to improve access to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club has been given a boost under the latest funding round of the Federal Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities programme.

Local Federal MP Dr David Gillespie today announced funding of $15,000 under the programme towards the installation of a new lift and other access improvements to the club house.

“These facilities are an important component in the Club’s overall plans to undertake a larger redevelopment of the 40-year-old clubhouse and I am

delighted they have been able to secure close to the maximum funds available under this particular funding programme,” Dr Gillespie said.

Gallery Grand Opening

THE night could only be described as ‘fabulous’ as 300 art lovers, locals and visitors gathered at the grand opening of ‘The Gallery’ on the waterfront in Tea Gardens last Friday.

Guests mingled in the garden while inside the newly renovated ‘Gallery’, local musician Michael Harvey tickled the ivories.

The champagne flowed and a smorgasbord of canapes wafted through the crowd.

by Galleries in the Gardens members were on display and a number of them were eagerly snapped up.

Mark Tedeschi, AM QC, officially declared the venue open with a flourish of a pen to canvas then invited others to add their moniker to the commemorative work.

“Galleries such as this are a very important part of the fabric of society and play an important adhesive role in communities,” Mark Tedeschi said.

Mark and GIG’s President, Trevor Cook, gave an interesting potted history of the building now owned

by Lee and Rob Anderson who allow the not-for-profit Group to use it as a Gallery and Activity venue.

“The Gallery has risen like a phoenix thanks to the hard work of dedicated Galleries in the Gardens members,” Trevor Cook said.

“Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest have always had a strong community ethos, with locals who selflessly give their time and more to benefit the area.”

State MP Kate Washington said, “The Gallery is such an impressive community initiative, I encourage everyone to visit this new, beautiful Art Gallery.”

Weekly ArtSpeak mornings start from Wednesday 24 January in the garden.

They’re open to GIG members and anyone feeling arty and aimed at fostering friendships between ‘like minds’, the sharing knowledge and learning while working on your own art.

MONTHS of hard work have paid off for the members of the Myall Art and Craft Centre following one of their most successful shows ever.

In the days leading up to the show, the Centre on Myall Street in Tea Gardens was transformed into rooms of lovingly displayed art, photography, mosaics and craft to show off the best the group has to offer to the public.

“The Centre has a dedicated group of

volunteer men who help out every year with the setting up, clearing out the rooms to make way for the exhibits,” Co-Ordinator, Maryanne Durrant said.

And when the doors were open on the first day the people just kept coming over the next 72 hours.

“People came in and were asking if they could place orders for some items,” Maryanne said.

While many items were sold, there was a raffle running all through the long weekend of art to raise funds

for Community Transport in Tea Gardens.

The winner was Ann Bernar who was lucky enough to take home the beautiful painting titled “Bennett’s Beach” donated by well known artist Joan Richards.

Winner of the People’s Choice Award for the best art work was Christine Preston for her painting titled “Stormy Sunset”.

As they’ve done for more than 20 years now the Group will be back to do it all again next year.

Winda Walloped Again

By Margie TIERNEY DAYS of relentless winds and pounding waves have once again taken their toll on Winda Woppa.

An estimated 10 thousand cubic metres of sand has been lost along Jimmy’s Beach leaving steep cliffs where once were gentle sand slopes.

“The natural repose of sand on our beach is about ten degrees but Council keeps building slopes in excess of twenty degrees, and wondering why we get so much sand erosion,” local resident Ken Garrard said.

“Needless to say the shoreline is now a cliff, the road was saved on this occasion but only just,” Patricia Garrard told News Of The Area.

Ken and Patricia Garrard have been joined by Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group in calling for a long term solution to the problem.

Gordon Grainger is in favour of building an artificial reef offshore or restoring Myall Point which was the natural barrier destroyed by a cyclone in 1927.

In the short term, conservationists are also worried about the Little Terns who are still hatching and nesting in the sand stockpile at Winda Woppa and hope no action will be taken for at least a month.

Motor Club Coolongolook Trip

THIS time the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club had a very enjoyable monthly Club Run to the Salty Dog Restaurant in Coolongolook, about 50 minutes drive from Tea Gardens.

Fifteen vehicles with 23 members assembled at the Tea Gardens Country Club and drove in convey to the venue.

We passed four Highway Patrol Cars and two unmarked Police cars.

We had no problem as our convey speed was 90km/hr.

Many Club Member’s vehicles have been beautifully restored to its original factory condition.

NEW solar powered lighting for North Arm Cove residents in the new parking areas at the Community Centre will improve visibility and safety, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie told News Of The Area.

Dr Gillespie announced Federal funding of $5,000 towards the $10,000 local ‘Light Up Our Heart’ project being undertaken by the North Arm Cove Progress Association.

“As most of the local community activities at the

hall occur in the evenings, the Association believes it is important that people know they can safely access their vehicles at the end of the night,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This project will see the installation of new lighting in the carpark, to increase safety and security of people when they leave the hall after dark.”

Dr Gillespie said the Federal funds would be made available under the Government’s ‘Stronger Communities’ programme.

The ‘Stronger

Communities’ Programme supports the Federal Coalition Government’s commitment to deliver social benefits across Australia by funding small capital projects in each of the 150 Federal electorates.

The programme’s intended outcomes are to improve local community participation and contribute to vibrant and viable communities. Round 3 of the programme will provide $22.5 million in 2017-18, $150,000 to each electorate.

Club Fours Champions BOWLING Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By The JAFFA 17 January The regular starting time for Wednesday Bowls was put back to enable the Women’s Bowling Club to have a bowling session with Australian and World No1.

The Club nonetheless had a good roll up for twilight 3.00 pm bowls with 30 players enjoying 12 ends of triples.

There were some close scores but the winners with a runaway score of 30 points and winning 10 ends were Lance Atkins, Pip Sullivan and Greg Pearson.

Second on 27 points were Alan Greenhalgh’s team of Bruce Everitt and Paul Carter.

19 January The usual 18 stalwarts played today in the Open Friday (not-for-profit) Pairs.

There were 3 games of Pairs and 1 game of Triples played.

It’s nice to see the winners shared around and those with boasting rights were; Peter King and Col Saillard.

They edged out the triples combination of Barry Goode, Dave Ransome and Neil Kibble.

Despite just playing for bragging rights there is always some fierce competition on Fridays 20 January

The semi-finals of the Club Championship Fours was played today with the favoured Sean Mearrick team reconstituted with John Parkinson substituting for Anthony Grant.

Along with Ken Devlin and Richard Lee, they opposed a determined combination of Geoff Page, Greg Smith, Noel Jackson and Jeff Baker.

For the second time in the competition, the hot favourites were taken to an extra end winning 21-20 on the 22nd.

In the remaining semifinal, Peter Gurney, Ian Baker, Daryl Martin and Col Amos struggled early and at the half-way mark the scores were tied at 10-10.

After that they powered away from the Tony Coomer, Bob Weir, Brian Emmett and Ron Webster four to make the final 20-16.

It was good to see popular bowler, Bob Weir back from a long break. He substituted for Neil Kibble, struck down with a 24 hour virus.

21 January In the final of the Club Championship Fours played today the “dream Team” of Ken Devlin, John Parkinson, Richard Lee and Sean Mearrick were having no part in close finishes.

Opposing the Col Amos side of Peter Gurney, Ian Baker, Daryl Martin, they put the Championship beyond doubt when they hit the lead at the 7th end leaving their opposition stranded on 6 points for 11 of the

Another comeback story on Rink 4. Sheril Johnson, Pam Gilchrist and Jill McBride on the 8th end had a score of 1 compared to Pauline Perry, Bev Dunn and Sandra Leisemann with 10 shots.

The winners were Sandra’s team 15 v Jill’s ladies 12. Good to see “a never say die attitude”. The Fours game, not sure what to report here. Lyn Nightingale, Christine Fossey, Bev Rhodes and Lynne Green 8 v Francis Betar, Dorothy Thompson, Bev Stephens and Olive McKeown 29. The winners on the day were “winners with the highest margin”. Not hard to know which team that was.

Wednesday 17th January: Team Training Session with Karen Murphy. Karen has bowled for Australia in over 600 games. The Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April will make 5 times she has been selected to represent our country in this venue. Basically 43 years old and a bowls legend.

All who attended benefited greatly from the theory and practical session. Hopefully our club will bring home a Pennant Flag this season from knowledge/skills gained from Karen. Thanks to Dale Winter, Dorothy Dallas and Bev Rhodes for catering lunch.

“They recently gave us the opportunity to put on a sausage sizzle as part of the New Year’s Eve celebrations,” Jock said.
