By Daniel SAHYOUN THOUSANDS of people packed into Bulahdelah Showground last weekend to enjoy two huge days of non-stop action and entertainment.

Showjumping, campdrafting and mower races dominated the ring and poultry, cattle and woodchopping provided plenty of entertainment around the grounds.

Animals and teddy bears were primped and preened for the pet competition and carnival rides kept the masses spinning for hours.

MidCoast Deputy Mayor Katheryn Smith officially opened the show and said the event “proudly showcased everything the area has to offer”.

“This is my first

Bulahdelah Show and it definitely won’t be my last,” Cr Smith told News Of The Area.

“The committee and volunteers have worked very hard to put on a great event and the displays that I have seen have been magnificent.”

The pavilions were jammed-pack with cakes, produce, needlework and photography, topped off with an impressive display from the Bulahdelah Garden Club.

Eight-year old Beau Barris-Jones was the Most Successful Pavilion Exhibitor and Kerrie Turnbull was the winner of the most number of exhibits entered.

Show Society Secretary Bernadette Newton said there were many highlights during this year’s event.

A 55 year old man has been arrested after a drug raid on a property in Myall Street, Tea Gardens last week.

Police seized a number of cannabis plants and other drug related items when they searched the home and yard on Thursday 16 November.

The man was taken into custody and charged with several drug related offences.

He’s due to face court next month.

CHRISTMAS is just over a month away, traditionally a time for giving and receiving.

But for many Australian women every day it can be a struggle to buy the essentials of life.

For the second year in a row Tea Gardens Mum of two Jodie Genner is donating her time and efforts to the ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign run by the ‘Share the Dignity’ charity.

Myall locals are being asked to donate a handbag filled with some of the necessities most women take for granted.

Jodie Genner told News Of The Area, “The bag can be new or in very good condition, but more importantly it needs to contain some items that will help make some woman’s Christmas a little happier.”

“It can be filled with basic toiletry articles, maybe a scarf, cosmetics,

a piece of costume jewellery,” Jodie said.

The bag fillers don’t have to cost the earth, they can be simple things like sanitary needs, a gift card or food voucher.

Last year 50 bags were donated from the Myall Area.

Jodie’s office at Century 21 on Marine Drive at Tea Gardens is once again the drop off point for your donations.

You have until Saturday 2 December to make someone’s

grant for the sign through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program.

“The sign is innovative, it stands out and is the only one of its kind in the MidCoast Council area,” Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said.

“It can be changed remotely by a telephone app and other messages like ’wet road’ or ‘road blocked’ can also be displayed.”

The new sign was recently installed roadside near Lions Park and was officially launched by Mr Bromhead last week.

Deputy Mayor Katheryn Smith, MidCoast RFS Superintendent Kam Baker, Bulahdelah Brigade Captain Mark Hartwell and local brigade members Scott Bidwell, Kevin Johnson, Grahame Rowell, Laurence Sumner and Meagan Terry attended the ceremony.

“The RFS guys do a fantastic job with constant call-outs to fires and motor vehicle accidents and this sign is another thing that can help them,” Mr Bromhead said.

“It makes things safer, it is better for drivers and better for the greater awareness.”

Electronic signs are now starting to be rolled out in high risk areas across NSW to replace the manually-set fire rating signs.

Mr Bromhead said the new automated sign in Bulahdelah is the second to be installed in northern NSW.

Starting primary school or high school can be a daunting prospect for children. It can also be a daunting prospect for separated parents, as they need to work together to determine the most appropriate school for their child to attend. This is a decision of parental responsibility.

Most parenting Orders give separated parents equal shared parental responsibility.

This means that parents must communicate about the issue, and reach agreement. If one parent makes a unilateral decision about which school the child attends, they risk being in breach of the Order.

Parents should have discussions early regarding schooling, and at least 6 months before the enrolment applications are due. During those discussions, be open minded to all possibilities and ideas, and think about the impact on your child of each proposal.

When parents are unable to reach an agreement, there is an expectation that they will attend mediation to try to reach agreement. If this is unsuccessful, and parents still cannot agree, the only option remaining is an application to the Court. These applications are difficult because the Court cannot decide if one school is better than another; it can simply look realistically at the facts before it, and try to determine which option will ultimately be more convenient for the individual child.

In the meantime, while ever the issue remains in dispute, your child is left with the uncertainty of what school they will be attending in the coming year, and is unlikely be able to become excited or make plans with their friends. Save your child this angst, and let them experience the adventure of commencing school or high school by addressing the issue early and realistically, and with an open mind.

AFTER a long and patient wait, the Bulahdelah/Tea Gardens Anglican Parish has a new Minister.

Reverend Peter Adkins was commissioned as Rector of the “Parish on the Myall’ at a recent service at St Andrews Church in Tea Gardens.

The Right Reverend Dr Peter Stuart, the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle’s Bishop Administrator, officiated at the ceremony.

“It has been a long and patient wait for our Parish of over two years,” Andrew Sillar told News Of The Area.

“We give thanks to God for the locum ministers who faithfully served the parish over that time, particularly the Rev. Denis Kirkaldy who was our much-loved locum for some 18 months,” Andrew said.

The Commissioning Service was packed with official guests, visiting clergy, parishioners and supporters from the local community.

“Reverend Peter was presented with the symbols of his ministry of water, oil, bread & wine, a bible, prayer book and a purple stole, by members of the congregation,” Andrew said.

Quilt and Literature Award Winners

By Geoff WALKER “DON’T sit down!” This was the advice given to Anna Bay’s Jann Sturdy by the announcer at the 2017 quilting show.

You see, Jann more or less scooped the pool with her entries, returning to the table time and again to pick up more prizes.

Others to do well included Lynley Keers, Wendy Nutt, and Maureen Grealy. Some 58 quilts were entered with a further 29 on display over the weekend of November 18th and 19th at Club Lemon Tree.

Wendy Nutt has also

recently won a commendation in the Australian Modern Quilt Show.

The Quilt Show was also chosen as a venue to announce the winners of the Port Stephens Literature Awards 2017. The $1100 in prize money is funded

by PSSC, Club Lemon Tree and entry fees. It has been running for some 15 years under the umbrella of TACE (Tilligerry Adult and Community Education), a not for profit group connected to Port Stephens Shire Council.

This year drew entries from every Australian state

with local writers from Medowie, Tea Gardens and Tanilba Bay featuring in the top 21 awards.

First prize ($500) went to Sophia Field from Victoria with her story ‘Chocolate Milk’. The same story also won the $50 Judges’ award.

Second prize ($300) was taken out by Tasmanian Freya Cox with her entry ‘A Colour of Loss.’

The News Of The Area award ($150) was for ‘A Child Named Warrior written by Rob Viskovich from Lane Cove in Sydney.

WEDNESDAY, 15 November 2017 marked a day in Australia that is sure to become one of historical importance.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released results of the non-binding postal survey undertaken on behalf of the Federal Government.

The question posed, Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry? Was answered by 79.5% of citizens.

In evidence that Australia has undergone a significant cultural shift in the past couple of decades, 61.6% (7 817 247) responded Yes and 38.4% (4 873 987) replied No. Of those who returned their postal votes in the Federal electorate of Paterson, which encompasses the Port Stephens Local Government Area, 65.5% (60 915) voted to change the Law, higher than the national average.

“It’s great that Australians are sending this message of acceptance and telling our young people: It’s OK to be who you are.”

In acknowledging that not all constituents voted Yes, and that for some this will be a difficult result to accepts, Ms Swanson said, “To those constituents of mine who voted No, I would like to offer the assurance that they will be entitled to religious protections under Dean Smith’s private member’s bill, which received unanimous, multi-party support.”

“It is the best representation of our nation’s intentions.”

Local resident, Ms Francess Zahra was overcome with emotion about the historical result.

Ms Zahra, who lives in Medowie, has been impacted by the issue, like so many others, through family connections.

She told News Of The Area, “When the Yes vote came through, I cried happy tears.”

“Not really just for my son and his partner, but for my

granddaughter Hazel.”

“My son has stood bravely against the criticisms and also embraced the positives, but Hazel is a baby and deserves to be treated as any other child living in a happy family with parents who adore her, which they do.”

Local Councillor Mr Giacomo Arnott, who introduced a (failed) motion to support same-sex marriage at a recent Port Stephens council meeting said, “Parliament should have got on with its job from day one and changed the marriage act to reflect what we already knew , that the majority of Australians support same-sex marriage.”

“Instead, the Liberal Government wasted $122m of public funds to conduct an opinion poll.”

“I hope that the Marriage Act will be changed swiftly and without obstruction in the Parliament.”

“The Paterson electorate’s strong ‘yes’ vote vindicates my arguments around why I put that motion to Council.”

“All levels of Government exist to provide leadership on issues, and failing to pass that motion was a failure from Council to show leadership in our community; who, as it clearly turns out, support that very issue.”

LAST week Deb Gilbert from Bulahdelah Central School attended the Bulahdelah Show Public Speaking night where awards were presented for entries in the arts and crafts sections of the show and students from a variety of local schools competed in the Public Speaking.

Ms Gilbert was impressed with the talent in our district demonstrated on the evening.

I am an only child and therefore responsible for my parents as they age and eventually pass away. My father wants to be cremated.

My mother wants to be buried. I think it would be nice for them to stay together in the one spot. Any advice?

Mr NB, Salt Ash Dear Mr NB, WELL, this is a macabre little Jasminda problem.

As if there isn’t enough sombre news at the moment with rare dugongs being caught in commercial fishing nets, Trump on the back foot after trying to put elephant trophy imports back on the agenda, and various other calamities. And now your email.

As much as I don’t want to think about death while eating my afternoon tea, Mr NB, can I use this opportunity to say that the best way to dispose of the dead is in a pod.

Now, I don’t know if these are legal in Australia yet, but I certainly hope, when my time comes, that my family will arrange a burial pod which will turn me into a lovely tree.

Can you imagine how much more aesthetically pleasing graveyards would be if people were put into a pod, complete with seeds, that then sprouted to life (with a bit of help from the organic matter). Grey gravestone or green tree? Spooky graveyards or lush forests? The choice is pretty easy.

Now, with your particular problem, if dad goes first, you can just pop him on the shelf in a little pot and then place him in the ground with your mother.

If your mother is the first to go, you can always sprinkle your father’s ashes over her burial place.

I really must go now, because my husband is looking over my shoulder, wondering why I am researching burial methods, when I am supposed to be helping him with the gardening.

Concert Set to Entertain Wide Genre THE Myall U3A Choir is celebrating 20 years this year and looking forward to its annual concert on Saturday 2 December which commences at 7pm.

Some of the choir gathered on the Singing Bridge before choir practice last Wednesday for a publicity photo which echoes the Myall U3A logo.

The Groups wished to thank the Co-Ordinator of the U3A Photography Club, Andrew Sillar.

The annual concert

is on at the Hawks Nest Community Hall and as always, the audience will be treated to a most enjoyable mix of music from a wide genre, showcasing our efforts throughout 2017.

A $5.00 donation at the door will secure a seat and a further gold coin donation buys a delicious supper after the performance.

The choir meets each Wednesday afternoon to practice breathing and vocal exercises and to learn ‘ part singing’.

The spectators were not disappointed with the quality of the bowling, even though we are Novices. Wind gusts proved to be a challenge for both competitors.

Victory finally went to Lynda, on the 29th end, 151 v Pam 139. Thanks Karen Green for Umpiring and Francis Betar for Marking. Following play lunch was enjoyed by members thanks to the hard work of Dale Winter.

Congratulations to our club members Vicki Rankin and Lorraine Harvey who joined forces with Leisa Morgan from Raymond Terrace to win the Jacaranda Carnival which was held at Raymond Terrace on the 13th and 14th November. Their team won all five games. Well done.

a game of Bowls in good company.

The organisers thanked Keith Smith and Ian Baker for their help in doing the score board.

This was a very professional presentation showing progressive results from the score cards.

The RSL LifeCare Versatility Day has cemented itself onto our Bowling Calendar for next year where it is bound to be another outstanding success.

17 November: Five Dollar Friday is proving to be successful with 20 players participating in the Open Pairs competition.

The competition was close in most games with single digit wins for 4 teams.

Jeremy Bilson takes the stage on friday night from 7:45 pm, and it’s a performance you don’t want to miss.

Jeremy is a musical ‘jack of all trades’, suited to all musical tastes and preferences.

He was originally classically trained, and is a graduate of the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.

Jeremy has branched out with his musical performances, and now gravitates towards soulful pop, rock and folk and soul covers.

He is a singer, songwriter and keyboardist, who is well suited to any private or public function/event including weddings, parties, business functions, café’s, restaurants and bars.

Jeremy has released two studio EP’s so far of his

music, ‘Head Above Water’ and ‘Fingerprints’.

His music draws on inspiration from artists such as Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Elton John, Sam Smith, Billy Joel, Adele and John Mayer.

Jeremy has been performing regularly around the Newcastle region at local venues, weddings, corporate events and functions, as well as touring up and down the Australia’s East coast playing shows in Brisbane, Byron Bay, Wollongong, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

When Jeremy isn’t performing he teaches music full time at the National Music Academy where he specialises in teaching piano and song writing lessons.

Jeremy told News Of The Area, “After touring the New South Wales and Queensland coast performing and releasing my second EP,

I’m so excited to be playing an incredible night of live tunes at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.”

By Trevor DAVIES FOLLOWING the RSL Sub Branch Bowls Challenge the Karuah RSL bowling green has been taken out of service for its annual refurbishment.

Colder weather this year has slowed the regeneration process and has threatened to delay the restart date.

Champion Green Keeper Leon Post said, “We need more warm sunny days, but we are not that far behind schedule.”

Club Vice President Dave Austin said, “Success depended on both hard work and settled weather to allow the newly levelled green to settle without surface water running across it, we did the hard work and we were lucky with the weather.”

An early start last Thursday saw Leon and a team of volunteers start work at 5AM top dressing

and ended at 12 Midday after levelling.

Leon said, “Some nervous minutes were had when storms threatened late Thursday but we got only gentle showers in Karuah which might just put us back on track to meet our time schedule.”

The Karuah RSL Bowlers are very hopeful of being back playing on the green before Christmas. Keep your eyes on our notice board and Facebook pages for dates. See you at Karuah.

FRESH from his win at the New South Wales titles, young Karuah Boxer Daniel Evans is heading to Melbourne this weekend for a shot at becoming Australian Amateur Champion.

24 year old Daniel took out the NSW Amateur 71 kg Boxing title back in August when he won in a unanimous decision against his Sydney opponent Oscar Doane.

The fight was over four 2 minute rounds.

Daniel’s family are right behind him, supporting his endeavours in every way.

“Daniel is flying down to Melbourne, but I’ve got all his gear and it was too expensive to take in on the plane, so

It’s been a busy year for Daniel combining his bouts and training with studying at University and working part time at the Karuah Timber Mill.

By John SAHYOUN A YEAR of casting lines in just about every waterway in the region was celebrated last weekend at Bulahdelah Fishing Club’s annual presentation dinner.

Around 150 keen anglers and their families gathered at Bulahdelah Bowling Club for the biggest presentation night the fishing club has ever held.

Club President Darren Carrall said it has been a great season with many successful outings.

“The standouts were the Mate Against Mate and our 25th Anniversary,” Darren told News Of The Area.

“The quality of fish caught has been really good, it has been a bumper year so point scores have been a lot higher than usual.”
