But last week 70 bushfires were burning across New South Wales, 20 of them out of control, and the mid-north coast right in the thick of it.

“It’s going to be a long hot summer, it’s going to be a long hot fire season,” Noel Quince from the Pindimar/ Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service told News Of The Area.

Celebrating 95 years JACK Ireland OAM, celebrated his 95th Birthday last week surrounded by his family in Bulahdelah.

“I have enjoyed life tremendously,” Jack said.

“I even got to meet with the Queen, Prince Philip and the Governor General during the Royal visit in 1954.”

From a young age, Jack worked long hours in the family butchery in Crawford Street and “enjoyed every minute of it”.

“When I left school, the teachers said I should be going to university, but in those days, it was very expensive,” Jack said.

“At the butchery, all the work had to be done by hand as there was no such thing as mains electricity.”

Jack recalls the kerosene lanterns, the manual meat saws and the mail runs.

“We had a number of runs where we used to take the meat and bread

“People used to depend on the butcher and baker to bring their supplies.”

In 1951, the butchery amalgamated with the bakery and became known as T.L. Ireland & Sons, and moved to the new premises in Stroud Street a few years later.

“It was very difficult to build the business up, I was working 12 hours a day back then,” Jack said.

“I was also very busy with the cattle.”

Jack said working long hours taught him very early in life that nothing comes easily.

“It is the hard work and good decisions that bring success,” he said.

A grant of probate is a formal order from the Supreme Court which provides authority to the executor(s) appointed under a Will to carry out the administration of a deceased estate. WITH the September school holidays and October long weekend almost upon us, locals and tourists are being asked to tread carefully along the sands of Winda Woppa.

The area is now home to an endangered species of bird, the Little Tern.

Local Neil Fraser tells the story of how the Little Terns first appeared at Winda Woppa.

“The dredging of the mouth of the Myall River in 2015 led to an unexpected outcome.”

“A colony of Little

Tern found the dredged sand and shingle to be an ideal nesting location,” Neil said.

“Twenty-three breeding pairs were recorded on Winda Woppa last summer and they successfully raised 28 fledglings.”

“The relative isolation and adjacent fishing grounds in Port Stephens and the Myall River make Winda Woppa an ideal nesting location.”

Who’s Elected?

THE 11 Councillors who will serve on the new MidCoast Council were declared earlier this week.

The team, in the order they were elected, is David Keegan, Jan McWilliam, Brad Christensen, Len Roberts, Peter Epov, Troy Fowler, Kathryn Bell, Claire Pontin, David West, Katheryn Smith and Karen Hutchison.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Len Roberts said the results “have given the best possible team to lead council into the future”.

“I think people have got it right, because when you look at the 11 representatives, it is a complete representation across the entire shire,” he said.

“Knowing the new

Councillors, they are people of good standing and I believe that it will work.”

For Gloucester, local representation has been secured with former Deputy Mayor, Katheryn Smith, claiming one of 11 positions.

Katheryn said although the Councillors will work together to represent the entire MidCoast region, she is glad to see local representation for the smaller outlying areas.

Results of the MidCoast election were finalised last Saturday after the distribution of preferences had been completed.

But in the contentious style that has plagued Council from the start, the NSW Electoral Commission advised candidates that a request for a recount had been lodged.

THE environment took centre stage at the Lions Club’s monthly dinner at the Tea Gardens Hotel last week.

Brooke Feltis from Boomerang Bags and the Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger were both invited to address the members.

Brooke, along with a small but dedicated group of volunteers, is working hard within the community to stamp out the use of plastic bags in supermarkets.

They cut, stitch and sew shopping bags from recycled and donated fabric.

‘We’ve gone from just four people to about 20 regular volunteers since we began our group back in April,’’ Brooke said.

‘We’re not about making money, we sell our bags for just $2, we’re about raising awareness.”

As part of their campaign they’re encouraging residents and businesses to join in a plastic free hour between 10am and 11am this Saturday 23 September.

‘We’re asking all the community to say no to plastic, similar to the earth hour when everyone turns their lights off.”

“As far as possible, we source our produce locally,” Wootton Community Network President Jim O’Connor said.

“Recently, we have had local eggs, buffalo meat and citrus fruits, so we used those in our dishes.”

The café was opened in 2004 and was constructed entirely with volunteer labour over a four-year period.

Volunteer Pat Tate said the building is a focal point for the small community and provides a meeting place for locals.

“It is meant to be a hub where our local community can meet and to provide a place where younger and older people can gain some new skills,” she said.

“The money we raise goes towards community events and the upkeep of our buildings.”

After parting on compatible terms, my girlfriend and I remain friends on social media. In my feed this week, Facebook offered me to share one of their ‘you’ve been friends for three years’ collages. You know, the one that shows photos of you both and then the number of times you’ve ‘liked each other’ (1035 times). I did share it, but it has since been removed.

Mr TL, Medowie Dear Mr TL, Compatible terms? What a crock. How about Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin and their ‘conscious uncoupling’.

How could a man responsible for some of the coolest lyrics of all time submit to that sort of mad expression?

Or call his kid Apple? Gwyneth had to be behind it.

In every relationship breakup, there’s the one we naturally side with, and the one who behaves a bit like the Cable Guy. There’s the dumper and the dumpee. There’s the one who gets on with it, and the one who posts ‘we’re still friends, see, we liked each other 1035 times’.

Don’t submit to your post-break-up mania, Mr TL. You want to be the quiet one. You need to play it cool.

Otherwise you’ll come across as a weirdo stalker, just like you did when you shared the ‘Friends’ post.

Tell me you didn’t ‘like’ her Snapchat bunny pics and then share them to your own page, post break up. That’s bad form.

Or worse, tell me you didn’t use the angry emoji when she posted some girls’ night out pictures or make a comment like: ‘You look like you’re having fun. I’m just at home eating lamb shanks on my own, you know, the recipe we discovered together on our second anniversary when I took you out to an expensive restaurant, bought you flowers and opened the car door, because you’re worth it. Anyway, have a good night. Stay safe. Call if you need anything.’

Please tell me you didn’t, Mr TL. Go for a drive with a friend, play Coldplay’s The Scientist and wallow in your melancholy away from your social media feed.

New Councillors should address Rate Rise WELL, the council election is over but what will we get?

Will the new council be one of honourable representatives who put ratepayers first; or will we end up with a bunch of useless seat warmers who just let the council management do whatever they want?

Not one of the candidates actually mentioned what they will do for us, all I saw was some chest beating about how long they’d been on a council previously.

So here’s something for the new council to ponder.

The recent rate increase

in very suspect but what is more galling is the way it was achieved.

Someone (most probably either the General Manager or the Administrator) approached South Coast MLC Paul Green and an amendment to the legislation to allow a special rate rise was enacted.

This was in direct contradiction to assurances given by the NSW Government that this type of money grab could not happen; in fact this action is why the legislation was put into place.

Given this I ask the new councillors to take management to task and

to demand a full ICAC investigation to the actions of, and relationships between MLC Paul Green, MCC Administrator, General Manager, Assistant General Managers and any other council employee who was involved.

In discussions I have had, I haven’t heard one positive response to the rate rise.

Whatever your views, the only way ratepayers will ever have confidence in the integrity of the General Manager or the new council is for this to be referred to ICAC for investigation.

Quilters turn their hand to cakes

By Margie TIERNEY IF you’re in the mood for some home-baked goodies then head to the Myall Coast Art and Craft Centre in Tea Gardens this Saturday.

In the lead up to their long weekend extravaganza,

the Quilting Group is holding a cake stall on the verandah between the Visitors Information Centre and the Craft Shop on Myall Street.

“The money raised will go towards resources for the Centre,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area.

“We are hoping that if it proves to be a success we could have one every few

months.”

The cake stall will run from 9am this Saturday 23 September.

Don’t forget the Quilting Group’s big show over the long weekend at the Craft Centre from 10am on Saturday 30 September, Sunday 1 October and Monday 2 October.

AS formal lessons wrap up for more than 70,000 NSW Year 12 students this week, marking of the HSC Visual Arts major works is continuing.

Amongst the thousands of artworks that have been transported to Sydney for marking, is a sculpture and caricature portrait created

by Bulahdelah Central School

student, Darcy Harris.

Darcy said his work titled ‘The Apprentice’ is constructed from recycled materials including wood and political newspaper clippings.

“It explores the relationship between Trump and Putin and the political situation at the moment,” Darcy said.

“The work as a whole shows the influence of exterior sources over Trump’s

regime.”

Darcy said the caricature of Russian President, Vladimir Putin, contains 400 political phrases, based on Putin’s 400-page book, ‘Words That Change the World’.

Also submitted for marking is Taylor Garemyn’s set of five portraits titled ‘Morning Rituals’.

Taylor said the inspiration for her work comes from the ‘useless time consuming’ task

Aquatic Activities Nominated Triples

THE Myall Lakes Aquatic Club AGM was held at Myall Shores Resort on 9 and 10 September.

The Club had a good roll up with 10 boats, four caravans, one cabin and a few daytrippers, the total being 42 members.

The committee virtually remains the same as the last two years being led by Commodore Rod Blanch who gave a rundown on all activities held over the last 12 months as well as future wharf projects planned in conjunction with National Parks.

Carol Hayden gave a very interesting nostalgic talk on past members of the Club going back to the 1970s.

The managers of the resort provided a wonderful meal and Club members then took to the dance floor with live music provided

by Alan Friehart from Bulahdelah.

A working bee will be held at Korsmans to repair the walkway onto the wharf on 18 to 22 October.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By The JAFFA 13 September The nice spring weather saw 40 players compete in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples event.

Most of the games were Triples, however there was one game of Pairs.

It was the Pairs combination of Brien McPhie and Rob Jones that won the money from runners-up, Ken Mckeown, Darryl Martin and John Carey.

John Carey was in great form.

15 September The Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs was poorly supported with only 12 players taking part.

Possibly the threat of strong winds kept some away, but it was not the case as players enjoyed good bowling conditions.

The winners with the highest margin won the day with Lon Richards and Alan Greenhalgh taking the money on +6.

There were insufficient numbers to make a jackpot draw.

The great conditions continued today attracting 22 bowlers competing in the Sunday Mixed Bowls competition.

Continuing on her form in the Club Mixed Pairs, Bette Saillard anchored the winning team which included, Gary Wynne and Bill Moon.

The Lucky Losers were Kevin Lee, (visitor), John Moore and David Williams.

There will be a visit from the Lake Cathie bowlers next Sunday and they will be joining the regular Sunday Mixed bowlers for a great time.

In other news: As mentioned, there will be a visit from the Lake Cathie bowlers next week and they are planning to play a team from Tea Gardens on Saturday afternoon.

The wonderful Palm Lake Resort is providing some great prize money for their annual Mixed Pairs competition on the weekend of 14 and 15 October.

Nominations are now open.

The Women’s Bowling Club has been busy organising their annual fundraiser for the Oncology Unit at the Mater Hospital.

This is a very popular event and will be conducted on Friday 6 October.

By Lynda RICHARDS CONGRATULATIONS to Robyn Beaumont, Sandra Leisemann, Robyn Webster and Kayelene Pearson who competed in the Newcastle District Versatility Day held on Monday 11 September at Soldiers Point.

Their team had wins in the Singles, Pairs and the

Triples but unfortunately went down in the Fours.

Sandra Leisemann and Robyn Webster coming first in the Pairs section, great bowling ladies.

Tuesday 12 September was a good turn up of bowlers for social bowls and Round 1 of the Minor singles.

Prior to play, president Robyn Webster congratulated Bette Saillard, winner of the club’s Mixed pairs Competition and Verlie Gray, Runner Up. Of course, it was a Pairs

Competition, so well done to Colin Saillard and Tom Parkinson.

PADDLERS and Pelicans were the order of the day at the annual Myall Classic Ultramarathon in Tea Gardens last Saturday.

280 competitors took to the river in what has become one of the most popular events on the NSW Paddle calendar.

Now in its 15th year, competitors ranged in age from 12 years to 76 years young.

Rowers on a Mission

A SURFBOAT crew from the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club recently swapped Bennetts Beach for the Macleay River to take part in the annual Australian River Rowers event.

Rowers L.J. Chester, Andrew Stubbs, Ian Sunner, John Estens, Mark Horton, Peter Rogers, Steve Howell and sweeper ‘Big Jim’ joined crews from up and down the east coast for the 60 kilometre row.

Their journey took them from Aldavilla near Kempsey to Smithtown for an overnight stop, then it was off to South West Rocks.

The crew was also rowing for a cause.

Organiser Peter Rogers, told News Of The Area, “The event this year was in support of veteran Grant Palmer, who fought in East Timor and returned with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”

Grant has teamed up with the ‘Whiskey’s Wish Foundation’ which provides him with a service dog to aid in his recovery.

Grant and his canine mate ‘Weary’ became the event’s official mascot for the weekend.

‘Whiskey’s Wish Foundation’ provides early intervention in the form of training highly skilled Service

Dogs that will provide years of mobility and social support to Veterans and First Responders with disabilities in particular those suffering with PTSD. Peter Rogers said, “For Tea Gardens Hawks Nest it is a great thing to do, to get together with other surf club crews in the lead up to another season and take on a river together, and to continue the improvement the club has made after winning their first Surfboat State Titles Gold Medal last season.’’

Over the past four years the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Crew has rowed the Manning, Clarence and Hastings Rivers.

Now they can tick the Macleay off their bucket list.

“Paddlers start off slow, speed up in the middle then slow again in later years, it’s a sport for all ages.”

This year’s event also attracted some first timers.

“Almost half of our entrants this year are university students practising for the Hawkesbury Classic next month.

“For many of them this is their first race.”

“There’s three distances: the 47 kilometre run which goes all the way up to Tamboi, then the 27 kilometre and the smaller 12 kilometre event,”

Tony said.

The weather was a bit windy, but on the whole pretty kind to the paddlers and spectators.

“This is the fourth year in a row,’’ Tony said, “I don’t know how long our luck is going to hold out.”

PaddleNSW is a not-forprofit organisation and all money raised goes back into local community charities and services.

It was also a successful season in the Town Competition thanks to the efforts of the coaches, Geoff and Erin Matheson, Grant Finlay, Chris Whalan and Steph Dennis.

Each team gave strong performances on the field each week, with Barry Bros Bulls finishing on top.

The Col Woodward Perpetual Trophy for the Most Promising Junior Player went to Beau Thatcher, awarded for his teamwork, ability and sportsmanship.

The Junior Players of the Year were Braydon Ford from Barry Bros Bulls, Jhet Finlay from the Blossom Bandits, Leo’s Lions Amber Cunningham and Physio Phantoms Tom Wylie.

The minis also had a great year and were sponsored by the Bulahdelah Lions Club who purchased a club cap for each of the players.

and Jess and Jamie Gordon.

Lisa Rose was named the Club Person of the Year in recognition of her service throughout the entire season.

Bulahdelah Junior Soccer Club President, Sandra Hourn, said it was a great competition.

“The kids really enjoyed it,” she said.

“We have a few going through to the travelling teams next year so we will end up with two teams.”

Sandra also acknowledged the committee and all those who supported the club during the season.

“Jackie, Rachael and Lisa put a huge amount of work in every week,” Sandra said.

“We also thank the businesses who sponsor our teams and the community for supporting our raffles.”
