With the heat comes bushfires so it’s a timely reminder that our Tea Gardens/Pindimar Rural Fire Brigade is looking for new members.

“The Brigade is currently in new member recruitment mode,” Brigade Captain Helmut Panhuber told News Of The Area.

“We are calling on the community if they have the time to come along to the brigade and see what we do and whether they can assist.”

The Christmas and New Year period is a time when spirits are high, drinks are flowing and the consequences of actions are not always considered. Even the simple action of making a phone call or sending a text message can have serious consequences.

It is a criminal offence under Australian law to use a mobile telephone in a way that is menacing, harassing or offensive. This can include the method of use, the content of the communication, or both.

Repeated, unwanted calls can amount to harassment under this law.

When determining whether a communication is menacing,

harassing or offensive, the standards of an ordinary reasonable person are applied.

A person convicted of an offence under this law is liable to a maximum penalty of imprisonment for 3 years.

There can be further civil consequences as well, such as Apprehended Violence Orders and family law implications depending on the relationship between the caller / texter and the recipient.

So before sending those text messages, or making that phone call, consider the consequences, and remember…never drink and dial.

The RFS is once again holdings its Santa Lolly Run through the streets of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest on Christmas Eve. Santas helpers will start off from the Skate Park in Tea Gardens at 2pm and wind their way around

But it was business as usual at the Boatshed Restaurant.

Diners who normally look out on the water were

paddling in it but no one seemed to mind.

Boatshed owner Clarrie Davison has seen it all before.

“It happens quite often, maybe five or six times a year,” Clarrie told News Of The Area.

But he did admit it was an unusually high tide.

“There was the Super Moon and a low pressure system, normally it wouldn’t have come over.”

Season of giving

By Ann SCULLY JUST when you were thinking that Christmas is a highly commercialized venture, one local resident from Leeward Circuit has managed to change the mindset of his neighbours and friends.

During last week, Paul “Santa” Scully and his trusty helper, Peter “Elf” Sharp took to the streets delivering the best homemade Christmas

Puddings to neighbours and friends.

Paul told News of the Area, “I generally make over thirty Christmas Puddings each year and enjoy handing them out to my neighbours and friends to enjoy over the Christmas Festive Season.”

“I really love Christmas and by giving and sharing with my neighbours and friends, it gives me great pleasure when they open

their front door to be presented with a homemade treasure,” Paul added.

This year, Santa and his helper dressed for the occasion, and instead of pulling a sleigh, they improvised and decorated a wheelbarrow and filled the barrow to the brim with the yet to be tasted sumptuous Christmas Puddings.

No doubt there were a few refreshments required before they set off on their journey and a few more refreshments were offered along the way.

New volunteers join in picnic

By Adrienne INGRAM THE Myall Koala and Environment Group welcomed several new members to its annual Christmas dinner by the river in Tea Gardens.

Almost thirty members of the group enjoyed seafood from Hook N Cook Café despite blustery evening winds.

President Jill Madden said it was especially good to welcome several new members to the 150-strong environment group.

“Our volunteers do great work throughout the year protecting local flora and fauna, so it’s very good to see more people involved,” she said.

“We’re always on the lookout for active and committed members.”

CHRISTMAS time is perhaps the most exciting time of the year, especially if your family and friends have little ones to share the wonder with.

Santa Claus with his sack full of toys and goodies is of course every child’s favourite and a special challenge for parents of young believers.

Trimming the tree and decorating your home can bring so much excitement and magic to the holiday season.

What will you hide in the Christmas stockings along with socks and jocks?

Where do you hide the sleigh bells that your child will hear tinkling and how do you get them off to sleep on Christmas Eve, so you can put the gifts under the tree?

Creating magic at Christmas tests every parent’s metal.

Where do you hide the gifts?

How do you fit in all the shopping?

If Santa has a list of every girl and boy that’s been naughty and nice every mum and dad out there has a list of epic proportion to have everything just right for the

silly season.

DOORS opened this week at the brand-new cafe in Hawks Nest, The Nest Cafe.

Situated on the same site as the IGA, the new addition to Tuloa Avenue, will provide a new menu and atmosphere option for Hawks Nest residents and visitors.

An official opening event on is planned for this Saturday 23 December, from 9am.

The Nest Cafe Manager, Anthony Gilbert, said the

staff are very excited to be delivering the new cafe service.

“Our team can’t wait to provide a delicious menu and coffee service to our community and visitors,” said Mr Gilbert.

“At the opening there will be face painting, giveaways, tasting and more to celebrate the cafe’s official opening.”

Singing bridge traffic Dear News Of The Area, WE would like to thank Ann O’Brien for her Letter to the Editor in Myall Coast News Of The Area (edition of 7th December).

It brings a focus on what is becoming a serious problem with the increase in numbers of both local residents and visitors crossing the Singing Bridge between Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens.

The matter was first brought to the Attention of the Progress Assn. and the Mid Coast Council Southern Area Reference Group some months ago, when an invalided resident

I don’t think I have it in me to endure the obligatory Santa photo this year. My kids are seven, five and three. Do you have any suggestions?

Mrs LC, Soldiers Point Dear Mrs LC, I’M not sure what your issue is with this fine Christmas tradition. What could be more enjoyable than standing in a queue that spans the entire circumference of the local food court with other screaming . . . I mean smiling mums and dads and their well-behaved offspring, all waiting patiently for their special time with the man in red?

What could possibly bring more goodwill than joining together as babies howl at being placed on a strange man’s lap, photographers dance with stuffed toys to encourage the money shot, mums wipe spittle from toddlers and dads discuss how much they love forking out for cellophane, solar lights, baubles, LOL Surprise toys, hams, turkeys, prawns, cherries, drones, Lego sets, remote control cars with no batteries, trampolines that need an engineering degree to set up, with stealth, on Christmas Eve, and those boxes of toilet rolls wrapped in gold paper that contain a paper hat and a choking hazard (better known as Bon Bons).

My children have always been forced to endure the great tradition of a Santa photo, particularly now they are surly teenagers. The one exception was last year when the queue was worse than every other year combined. Thankfully, the bearded man in the queue behind me had a similar body mass index to jolly old Mr Claus. I asked him to don one of the Santa hats I had in my shopping trolley, took a quick snap with my IPhone, and tried to ignore my kids as they whined “how embarrassing” all the way home.

I do believe, Mrs LC, that the answer could be a new innovation that just occurred to me. Let’s call it the Santa Line Sitter (SLS). It involves paying obliging teenagers $10 to babysit your children until they reach position number two in the Santa queue. They’ll be happy, because they can stay glued to their devices, and you can do all your Christmas shopping. A quick text message notification and you can casually return to the queue, get the photo (or the 15 photos, digital pic, fridge magnets, postcards and Christmas mug upsize version) and be off on your merry way. The teenagers could be rated via an app, to make sure they are fine, upstanding queue sitters. I think, with a bit of tweaking, it’s a winner.

By Connie HEWETT ANOTHER year has come and gone, how time does fly, The Myall River VIEW club held its final meeting for the 2017 at the Tea Gardens Hotel in the Cafe with 30 members attending, where once again Emily, Ben and staff excelled with their excellent service and scrumptious Christmas lunch.

We had a busy Christmas meeting holding nominations for the 2018 committee, raffling off 6 Christmas hampers and a large canvas print. The lucky winners of the Raffles are as follows, Kris Whiteley, Doreen Howell, Loretta Baker, Judy McGavock, Hilary Gall, Margaret Peacock and Robyn Matthews, congratulations to you all.

We also had Sue Ward and Sara James recite Christmas

poems for the members.

FOR many years now, the tradition of MidCoast Council staff gathering in the Council’s Forster office foyer, instruments in hand, to sing carols as a thank you to our community has seen huge support.

Each year, over a hundred people have packed into the Foyer to share some Christmas cheer, sing some carols and have some fun at the year’s end.

For the first time, this year several of our talented musicians are away on the last working day before Christmas, leaving a giant hole in their music-making ability. “But we don’t give up easily!” Council said.

Grief and Loss this Christmas

CRYING together is so less painful than crying alone.

Losing a loved one is difficult at the best of times, however, Christmas is especially difficult.

After attending a seminar on Grief and Loss at Christmas by Doris Zagdanski, a leading figure

in modern day grief and loss, I walked away with some thoughts on dealing with grief, not limited to Christmas, for the entire grieving process.

There is no set time for grieving to finish, grief can take years if not decades to come to terms with.

According to Ms Zagdanski, “You are the

expert on your grief.”

There is no timeline, no right or wrong way and sometimes well-meaning family and friends may say, “Move on, but where to?”

Twelve-year-old Carol Poniris said she attended with her family to share the Christmas spirit with everyone.

600 sizzling sausages barbecued by the Lions Club, glittery craft, face painting and balloon sculptures organised by the local Blue Light Committee and nonstop music and caroling ensured there was plenty of fun for the young and old.

With the whole community coming together, Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade held their annual lolly run in the park as part of the Carols this year.

There were beaming smiles all round as Santa and brigade members distributed huge sacks of sweet treats to the well-behaved girls and boys.

Organising committee member Meredyth Rae said

the exceptional talent of the performers and the huge turn-out from the community made the Carols a very special night.

“As our very first Carols in the Park, the night has gone brilliantly,” she said.

“There were a few glitches, but the night was all about the community enjoying the spirit of Christmas together.”

Meredyth said the committee hopes the community Carols will become an ongoing event.

Top Results

By Daniel SAHYOUN SHOCKED, stoked and excited is how Kaitlyn Gregory and Darcy Harris said they felt when they received their HSC results last week.

And the pair from Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) had every reason to be thrilled, with their top marks earning them a place on the 2017 HSC Distinguished Achievers list.

Kaitlyn’s results put her in the top one percent of the State in the Standard English Course and the top two percent for Hospitality.

Darcy scored an almost perfect mark in Ancient History, placing him in the highest band possible for the course.

Kaitlyn said she received

her results via a text message from the NSW Education Standards Authority at 5.45am last Thursday morning.

“I was really shocked, I didn’t expect two Band 6’s,” she said.

“I shouted a bit, had a second look to make sure it was right, woke Mum and Dad up and then shouted a bit more.”

For Darcy, the day was a little more relaxed, choosing to receive his results online.

“I forgot the results were coming out and I was at work all day, so I didn’t check them until 5.30pm,” he said.

“But I was pretty stoked when I saw the Band 6.”

Kaitlyn and Darcy said many of their classmates also achieved strong results, with

She was also awarded a $5,000 accommodation scholarship from the Charles Sturt Foundation.

Bowling Is Back Karuah Bowls Club

A common theme is often the eternal waiting that as kids you had before the big day arrived.

Bowlers at Karuah had re-lived their youth and its waiting over the last 2 months, waiting for their green to come back from its annual rest.

Last Saturday was the day, the weather was good, 40 bowlers were ready, the grass was lush, the big day

had arrived.

The anticipation had been worth it, the mixed teams were out on the green and the “world class” true movement of the bowls across that beautiful grass surface was back.

The day was warm but the camaraderie was warmer.

Two games of 10 ends for each team saw the winners play the winners and the second game would decide the day!

FISHING: Last weeks fishing outing was very successful, with a variety of species caught. Darby was our overall winner catching bream, flathead, ludrick and a number of whiting. He has taken the best of species with a .33 whiting. Our runner up this outing was Andrew Sharp with only a few points the difference and he bagged some excellent bream.

DARTS: An excellent turnout for darts this week with 15 teams competing and the eventual winners were Christine McKenzie and Trevor Peirson. The runners up were Lyn Peirson and Frog.

The men’s high score was 134

by Frog and the ladies high score was 121 by Karen.

IT was a Triples team of; Mark Nightingale, Greg Smith and Barry Goode that took out the money with 56 points.

Unlike last week, 4 teams went through undefeated with 1 on 52 points and the other 2 teams on 54.

Next Wednesday looks again a full house with 50 plus players but we always have room to accommodate our players.

8 December: Five–dollar Friday Open Pairs proved popular today with 18 players taking part.

The winners of the bragging rights were; Frank Zumbo and Henk Faber.

They were closely followed by Stewart Sturrock and Ken Devlin.

10 December: Today the Sunday Mixed Bowlers celebrated the end of their 2017 season with a Christmas Party.

Twenty five bowlers attended with some special

guests joining the party for lunch.

It was great to have Sunday Mixed Bowls stalwarts, Beverley Thrift and Barry Goode, accompanied by his wife Joyce, attending.

Adding to the enjoyment of the day, random cards were drawn and quite a few won a prize.

The organiser of Sunday Mixed Bowls, Robyn Webster, would just like to thank all the bowlers who have turned up each Sunday to keep Sunday bowls going.

President Rob Smith [Dakka] expressed confidence that a return to the Pub after a 9 year hiatus, will see the Club through a “back to basics” season.

Along with the Pub, a majority of season 2017 sponsors are back on board.

These committees provide a forum for open dialogue between the proponent and representatives of the local community, stakeholder groups and local councils on issues directly relating to the project.

We are looking for people who live locally or are a member of a stakeholder group (community, environment, Aboriginal or industry) to join the Brandy Hill Quarry Community Consultative Committee.

Your role as a committee member would be voluntary.

Selection criteria: You will be expected to contribute constructively to committee discussions, attend around (four) meetings a year, and communicate information about the Brandy Hill Quarry between the committee and the broader community.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

YOUNG local athlete Keira McGregor has just returned from her first International competition with more medals to her credit.

The 11 year old student from Medowie Christian School was competing in the Pacific Games alongside 4,000 other young athletes from 15 countries.

Keira’s results were remarkable for one so young.

She came second in the long jump and received silver medal.

In the 4 x 100 relay Keira brought the NSW team home in record breaking time to take out the Gold Medal.

She had 2 other relay events where NSW also won.

“I wish to thank my coach Charles Ringuet for the hundreds of hours spent training through heat and rain over the past four years,” Keira said.

Her Dad, John also has many people to thank.

“We wish to convey our heartfelt thanks to the many clubs, organisations and people who provided generous support and encouragement to Keira, enabling her to get to Adelaide and compete in such a prestigious event.”

“In particular we want to thank, the Karuah RSL Club, The Big Brown House, The Myall Lions Club, The Tea Gardens Baptist Church, The Tea Gardens Bridge Club, The Tea Gardens Masonic Lodge, The Raymond Terrace

Athletics Club and all the people who bought raffle tickets,” John said.

“Our special thanks goes to Keira’s school, Medowie Christian School, for their generous assistance, and their continuous support and guidance to Keira throughout the year.” ”Finally we wish to give our thanks to our family and friends living in Victoria for their financial support and the great pair of sprinting spikes.”

As a footnote, Keira had no sooner returned from Adelaide when she was again back on the track at the Little Athletics Zone championships and made another record breaking 4.98 metre leap in the high jump.
