“He can’t tell me a lot when he is in a warzone, but we certainly know that they’re going through very trying times at different points,” she said.

Bulahdelah RFS volunteer Meagan Terry, who was on her first deployment, said although she was a little overwhelmed at the carnage, the experience allowed her to build her skills.

“The best part was being able to help people restore some normality in their lives,” she said.

“It was good to work with the other volunteers and make new friends from different areas.”

The volunteer crews were accommodated in a base-camp known as ‘Tent City’ which according to Meagan, “was very well set up with showers, toilets, air

conditioning and power”.

“The best part was

Open plan shopfronts are becoming the way of the future. Many banks, telco companies and insurance companies are moving to a more open plan style of shopfront. While this may be inviting to customers, it could mean you are risking a breach of your obligations under the Australian Privacy Principles.

The Australian Privacy Principles contain certain obligations in relation to personal information and its use, disclosure and protection.

In a recent case, NRMA breached its privacy obligations when a staff member turned their computer monitor around showing information to a customer’s spouse and daughter. Not only could they see the information, but potentially other customers in the room. Even though the spouse had some joint policies with the customer, the

computer screen revealed details of policies in her sole name also. It was held that NRMA breached its privacy obligations by disclosing customer details to the spouse, daughter and other potential customers when turning the computer screen around. It was also a breach of NRMA’s privacy obligations when the staff member discussed with the spouse, details of the car insurance policy in the customer’s sole name.

NRMA was ordered to provide an apology to the customer and pay her damages of $2,000.00.

This case highlights that open plan shopfronts need to be used carefully and staff need to be trained properly to understand a business’ privacy obligations.

Having computer screens which may be viewed by other customers in the room could be a breach privacy obligations.

Art Expo Success

THE 40th Anniversary of the Tea Gardens Primary School Art and Craft Expo was a spectacular success last weekend.

It was estimated more than a thousand people made their way through the gates over the five day event.

“As a result of the wonderful volunteers, staff and ex-parents that always

help us out, it’s always a success,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area.

In the week prior to the Expo it was organised chaos at the Primary School as

dozens of volunteers worked tirelessly to display more than 500 works of art and craft.

“Some of the artists who dropped off their works, stayed to help,” P&C President Fiona Mobbs said.

The event kicked off with an over 18’s dinner last Thursday night.

“We’re way up on previous years in regards to numbers,” Fiona said.

There were so many people at the dinner that more tables and chairs had to be found, the evening was

The doors of the school were then opened to the public from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

In anyone’s language it was a mammoth effort making sure the event went off without a hitch.

“We had over a hundred volunteers, lots of people who give their time every year, staff as well,” Trudy Brumby said.

Trudy, herself a former Art Expo Co-ordinator still volunteered her time in the

run up to the event. ‘’Students came in and manned stalls, even exstudents volunteered their time.”

Reactions from visitors to the Expo ranged from “it’s fantastic” to “overwhelming and amazing works of art”.

The Expo is the school’s major fundraiser for the year and when the final numbers are counted it’s hoped to have raised around $15,000.

“It’s really about community coming together,” Principal Mark Clemson said.

Rain Affects Farming

By John SAHYOUN AFTER a drier than average summer, the heavy rainfall last month was a welcome relief for many of the region’s farmers.

Only 51 mms of rain was recorded in Bulahdelah during January this year, but a massive 381 mms was dumped last month, making it the sixth wettest March in more than a century.

The rainfall came at a good time for farmers, but the soggy conditions are now affecting the pastures.

“We had a very hot and dry time from Christmas till the end of February, so we were needing the rain to fill up the water supplies and get the streams flowing and pastures growing,” Markwell dairy farmer John Smith told

“But we have reached the stage now where everything has become saturated, the pasture declined and the quality of the feed is not enough to sustain body condition and maintain production.”

John said with the combination of a dry summer and wet autumn, supplementary feeding was now needed.

“Grazing is our preferred option, but when that doesn’t happen, we need to give them grain and hay to keep them going, and it becomes a bit more costly of course,” John said.

“The quality of the milk doesn’t change, as long as they are getting sufficient feed, the butterfat and protein levels are maintained.”

EMPLOYMENT in the Myall is often seasonal and hard to come by.

But a family-owned business has just opened its doors in Hawks Nest

and in doing so, provided jobs for 17 people.

In this age of satellites, internet and mobile phones, Ant Communications is providing telecommunications Australia wide.

John said attention was now focused on preparations for winter feeding before the cold weather hits.

“Summer pastures won’t carry us much past the end of April, so we are trying to sow ryegrass and clover for winter feeding,” he said.

“It’s a bit hard when the paddocks are so wet, but the first of the rain was really good to help prepare for winter, and we have pasture now that will be ready in a few weeks.”

After the soggy month of March, the wet conditions are continuing, with rain recorded on 10 days during the first two weeks of April.

As you can’t change the weather, John said they just have to work around it.

‘’We provide a service nationally, we’re up in Broome, to the southern point of Tassie, up north to Cape York and the Simpson desert,” said Kerry Croaker.

Business has also opened up for Ant Communications in Bulahdelah and parts of Medowie since the NBN was rolled out.

Ant Communication was started up in 2008 by Kerry and Glen Croaker and Kerry’s brother Wayne Inglis and his wife Gittan.

“The business came about because we bought a motorhome and were going to travel and there was no internet,” Kerry told News Of The Area.

“My husband had been in communications for 30 years and he thought his throat had been cut.”

“As an organisation and as a family, we were emphatic the call centre remain in Australia and that we employed Australians,” said Kerry.

Whole Lot Of Activity

By John SAHYOUN PLANS for an Activity Park in Bulahdelah are one step closer, after a meeting between MidCoast Council representatives and community organisations last week.

The original concept for the project was developed by Bulahdelah Lions Club, which included plans for an activity centre in the Mountain Park.

Lions Club Park Coordinator

Arthur Baker, said the current consultation between Council and the community will allow the original vision to expand.

“This process has been going on for a long, long time, and it has now got from behind doors and into the open where it can get ahead,” he said.

“We will now see how we can continue to fundraise so we can make it bigger and better.”

Mr Baker said the project came about after identifying that

Coathangers and Cushions for Cancer “Hang it up, sit down and shut the door” is the theme for the annual North Arm Cove Biggest Morning Tea with the “hang it up” relating to coat hangers, the “sit down” to cushions and the “shut the door” to doorstops.

Great Food On The Trail

By Daniel SAHYOUN HUNDREDS of locals and visitors followed the Great Lakes Food Trail over the Easter weekend, discovering some of the best quality produce available anywhere.

Buffalo milk, mozzarella and succulent pork were some of the many temptations on offer at the 15 stops around the region.

Kids got hands on by feeding lambs and collecting free range eggs at Lucy Land Merino Farm in Bulahdelah, showing the important link between paddock and plate.

“It’s important to understand where your food comes from and how it’s developed,” owner Julie Steepe said.

“It shows what’s involved with the process, and how humanely and ethically it can be done.”

Julie said she is committed to chemically free farming, which produces a cleaner, more natural product.

Local honey straight from the hives at Bulahdelah Men’s Shed featured at the second stop on the trail.

Men’s Shed member Gary Haynes said the local flora gives the honey its unique taste.

“The local honey is the best,” Mr Haynes said.

“It is very sweet, palpable, with no additives, just all the good stuff.”

A stop at Old Inn Road Vineyard provided the chance to relax in the valley while enjoying a glass of local wine.

Co-owner Sooze Bosire said they focus on producing very clean, well balanced wines, which complement the region’s produce.

Other stops along the trail included Wootton’s Brush Turkey Café, Burraduc Buffalo Dairy and Artisan Cheeses at Bungwahl and Topi Open Range near Seal Rocks.

Dear Ms. ES, TALL and tan and young and handsome, the boy from Anna Bay goes walking and when he passes, Ms ES goes ‘ah’.

You know that song just doesn’t have the same sultry vibe when you replace Ipanema with Anna Bay, Ms ES, but it was worth a shot.

There are certain logistical advantages to your fantasy.

If it all goes well, you could put in a shared boundary access gate to save time, or knock down both houses and commence a townhouse development, subject to council approval (good luck with that one).

But what if it all goes pear shaped?

You don’t want to have to move suburbs due to unrequited love.

You know, Jasminda once had a fatal attraction to her neighbour. It was based on his assortment of paisley ties hanging from the washing line and the way he could ride up the 75 degree shared driveway on his Malvern Star.

It didn’t take much to get Jasminda’s heart pumping back in the day.

But alas, like your man, he just didn’t notice the lovestruck 12-year-old gazing out her bedroom window.

Or, if he did, he kept his eyes averted. Just as well, in hindsight, given the age gap.

“My granddaughter Tillie wanted me to make her a fairy lamp, so I made her one, and then neighbours saw it, and it just kept going and going.”

But Pixie Forest isn’t just for little girls, with a range of castles currently in stock, and plans underway to introduce dragons and other magical creatures.

willing to make one of-a-kind items, in any colour, to ensure every young person’s fairy wishes come true.

Call for Quilt Donations

MEMBERS of the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre have put out the call for more quilt donations.

While the quilters group creates, it also donates some of their creations to worthy causes.

Now that Peter Sinclair Gardens has a new wing with more than 20 extra beds, the aged care facility also needs more quilts.

Enter, Art and Craft member Margot Case.

“A couple of years ago

I managed to get 46 quilts in four months,” Margot told News Of The Area.

“I talked to everyone, I talked to every organisation I could think of,” Margot said.

This time around, Margot needs at least six quilts to donate to Peter Sinclair Gardens. ‘’There’ve got to be single bed cotton quilts, and they have to be in good condition,” Margot said.

“I’ve made them, some people here have made them and given them to me.’’

“I go looking around

garage sales and looking for them there.”

Margot has been a member of the Myall Art and Craft Centre for 15 years The Quilters group also donates to Bear Cottage.

Thursday 13 April: Social bowls was cancelled. Thanks to heavy showers of rain

overnight the green looked more like a swimming pool than a bowling green.

The Grade 3 Pennant team were supposed to be playing Soldiers Point at home but their game was transferred to Soldiers Point as they have

undercover facilities.

Unfortunately not a good result for the Grade 3 players with one game drawn and a loss in the other resulting in 0 points. The Grade 2 team headed off to Alder Park and the result here was a winning

one with Tea Gardens adding 4.5 points to their tally.

The next home Pennant game will be the 27 April play commencing 9:30am with two trial ends.

Sunday bowls will resume following Easter, on 23 April.

Tuesday 11 April: Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club Pennant Teams had home games.

Grade 2 played Fingal Bay and Grade 3 were bowling against Nelson Bay Red. The north-westerly to south-westerly wind gusts of 25-30kms/hr did prove a challenge for most bowlers.

Good wins to both grades this week Grade 2 gaining 5 points and Grade 3 4.5 points, well done ladies.

IT’S an exciting time for members of the Hawks Nest Bridge Club.

Construction is about to commence on the Club’s new premises.

“We been talking about it for more than 20 years,” Club President Glenn Conroy told News Of The Area.

“All of the time, we’ve been growing and growing and always with an idea to build our own clubhouse,” Glenn added.

The building will be located at the end of the Yamba Street car park, behind the Hawks Nest Mall.

At the recent Grey and Thespian Community day, the Bridge Club members manned a stall on the spot where they will soon be turning the first sod.

“We’ve got everything in place, we’ve got Council approval, we’ve got the builder and we’ve got the money,” Charlie Shuetrim said.

‘’We’ve had a grant of $50,000 from the NSW Government, $33,000 from MidCoast Council and members of the club itself have put in over $200,000,” Charlie said.

“Council has been very supportive, and it will bring people to the Yamba Street area.”

The project will also leave access between the car park and the Hawks Nest mall.

The Bridge Club is hopeful construction will start within the next few weeks with the building completed by the end of the year.

“It will be a huge community asset,” Leslie Falla said.

New Myall Masters Committee

THE Autumn nip in the air indicates to Myall Masters Swimming Club members that their track suits should be packed with their towels when heading for a swim to the Raymond Terrace heated pool.

The weather hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm with which Peter Kellaway is training for the upcoming World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

Peter competed in the 80-84 year age grouping at the recent NSW Long Course Championships held at Homebush.

Peter, who is a freestyle specialist, achieved first placings in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle.

Now Kellaway has his sights firmly fixed on adding a world gold medal to his haul.

Regardless, Peter will give of his best – that’s the type of guy he is.

Members wish Peter well.

Club members supported the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras by displaying a visually engaging stall.

The energetic members themselves attracted interest as examples of healthy, fit people.

Strong interest was shown by people attending the market stalls and a list of potential members was collected for next season.

A number of changes to the administration of Myall Masters occurred at the recently held Annual General Meeting.

After 14 years as head coach, Leon Bobako did not seek re-election but will assist the coaching team of

Peter Kellaway, Mal Motum and new head coach, Brad Jensen, on deck during training sessions.

Brad is enthusiastic about imparting his knowledge to help swimmers improve in technique and fitness.

Secretary, Linda Stubbs, after many years at the ‘’desk’’ has stood down and welcomed Judy Glover to the position.

Judy has had a long and dedicated association with swimming clubs and is looking forward to the challenge of being Secretary.

Linda’s capable administrative ability will be evident in her position as Registrar for the Club.

After 14 years (give or take a few months) as Publicity Officer, this is my last article.

The Committee for the 2017/2018 is: President Chris Lock, Vice President Mal Motum, Secretary Judy Glover, Treasurer John Estens, Social Secretary Shirley Darch, Club Captain Chris Mobbs and Publicity Officer Val Mobbs.

President, Chris Lock, thanked the outgoing committee for their commitment of time and energy to the Club.

Chris warmly welcomed the new position holders and is eager to direct Myall Masters Swimming Club through another successful season.

Life Members, Rhonda and Leon Bobako, thanked all those members who contribute to the fun, fitness and friendship that is Myall Masters Swimming Club and asked the new committee to nurture the Club in the year ahead.
