Great Aussie Bush Camp Adventure

By Jaydah CASSAR Year 4 RECENTLY Years 3/4 went to the Great Aussie Bush Camp for 3 days. Before we went, we wrote what we thought would happen at camp. It was a half an hour drive.

When we got there we got settled into our cabins and made our beds. I was in a cabin with Scarlet, Salome, Lasey and Nikita. Then, we met our instructors, my instructor’s name was Clayton.

After we got settled, into our cabins we went to do our first activity. Our first activity was the dual flying fox. Dual means two so that means you got to go with a partner. My partner

22nd Birthday for VIEW MYALL River VIEW Club held its 22nd Birthday on 12 July at The Grange, Tea Gardens.

Cheryl Milburn said, “We hosted 71 ladies from local to other VIEW Clubs to lunch by

Heidi with a Christmas in July theme.”

Speaker of the day was Julie Sims who spoke on her experiences as a volunteer with Orangutan Foundation International.

Ms Sims has been to various areas to work helping to save them from death as their habitat is being logged for Palm Oil. It is no luxury job but Julie is passionate about saving the Orangutans.

Ms Milburn told News Of The Area, “We also had a Tombola raffle with 28 prizes and after lunch we drew the raffle with the ladies taking home some beautifully prepared q Shirley Mastin, Kris Whiteley, Margaret Ward, Sybil prizes by our ladies on Kenyon dressed for Xmas at the beautifully decorated tables.

was Scarlet for the whole day.

The dual flying fox was so much fun. I went two times and wanted to go again. The flying fox went over a lake and the lake was called Lake Ivan.

After that Clayton took us to get afternoon tea. For afternoon tea we had snow cones, but Clayton threw ice at me two times.

After, Clayton took us over to do pioneering. First we had to make a stretcher for Charlize to lay on. It was girl’s vs boy’s and Clayton helped the girls because we had less people. When we had finished building the stretcher we had to make a sling shot.

After pioneering we had dinner. For dinner we had spaghetti bolognese. Then we went to have a rest.

After our rest we played commando spotlight. I was a little scared because it was in the bush. I got to be in a group with Salome, Scarlet and Lasey. When we were so close to getting a glow stick Mr Pye would spot us.

After commando spotlight, Clayton put on a fire show where he put a sword on fire and threw it in the air. Then we went to sleep.

Nikita would not stop talking.

On Thursday morning we had to wake up at 7:00am. For breakfast we had pancakes with toast.

Our first activity was canoeing. When we got there we had to pull out the canoes and choose who we where going to share with. In my canoe it was Nikita, Salome and me. We played a game were we had to collect balls then threw them into Clayton’s canoe.

Then, we went to do rock climbing. Lasey went first and almost made it to the top. It

was Scarlet’s turn next and she made it just past halfway. Nikita was next and she made it to almost halfway. Then it was my turn, I almost made it to the top.

After rock climbing we had sandwiches for lunch.

We got to choose what we wanted on them.

After lunch we did archery. I wasn’t very good, but I still tried.

After afternoon tea we went to high ropes. We got to choose a partner and my partner was Salome. I went first and at the start I was a little scared.

When we did it we wore a harness and that got hooked up on to the top. After the walking on ropes we did a zip-line.

Then it was Salome’s turn, she didn’t fall off, but she almost did.

After dinner we did the country fair. I got to run the milkshake stand.

On Friday, after breakfast, we went on the giant swing. I went second and it was so much fun! To get up the whole class had to pull a rope. When you wanted to drop you had to pull a little orange rope. As soon as you pull the rope you drop straight away.

When you drop you swing backwards and forwards a couple of times.

After afternoon tea we did bush craft. There was eight people in my group.

First I did building then I made a fire.

After lunch it was time for home.

Families do not usually make sure that promises are recorded in writing or documents evidencing transactions are kept.

Failing to ask the “what if” questions (which lawyers are trained to ask) shows that this can be a mistake.

In a case of Grant v Roberts; Smith v Smith; Roberts v Smith; Curtis v Smith [2019] NSWSC 843 a husband passed away.

His sister had been living in a house owned by him since her divorce and she regarded it as her home.

She claimed she had paid $30,000 towards the purchase price from her family law settlement. A series of family members made claims against the husband’s estate.

The

Judge held that any promises made to the sister did not amount to anything more than a right to live in the house. The Judge also found that on the evidence the $30,000 was not paid towards the purchase price.

This was critical because if the sister had paid a lump sum towards the purchase price it might have shown an intention that she acquire a percentage interest in the house. Ultimately, due to competing family interests, the Court was obliged to find that the house had to be sold.

The Judge acknowledged it as a “train wreck” of a case. Recording the promises in writing may well have kept the train on the rails.

COUNCIL Acclaimed Australian artists Round-Up Stewart MacFarlane and Kate

By Cr Len ROBERTS Good news/Bad News Thanks to the support of the PA and PSG, Council has agreed to construct a footpath from Peter Sinclair Gardens (PSG) along Mirreen St to Tuloa Avenue.

This will enable safe and smooth walking for the residents of PSG and their helpers. The bad news is that people park on the footpath and restrict the access force the elderly out onto the shoulder or the road causing them to trip or fall or make it unsafe for mobility aids.

Even though there is no made footpath, it is illegal for cars to park on the grass verge. Cars must park on the road or road shoulder. Council will be blitzing the area and booking cars parking illegally. So if you are visiting PSG please park on the road and keep the footpath area clear for walkers.

MYALL Coast Artists wishing to make a trip north to see two exhibitions of acclaimed Australian artists Stewart MacFarlane and Kate Dorrough, will be in for a treat.

As from 27 July the exhibition s are open and will provide a feast for the senses and a perfect mix of styles, at Manning Regional Art Gallery.

Stuart has shown his works all over the world and his latest exhibition ‘The Real World’ will feature works that span his 40 year career as a painter.

Having studied painting in Melbourne and New York, his figurative, pop-inspired pieces are thought provoking and depict dark and often disturbing unfinished narratives.

MacFarlane has exhibited extensively in Australia, Europe and the United States.

Library News It is good to hear that Council Library services are partnering with the Family Research Group, not only for genealogical research but for other research and services as well. All we need to do know is find a home for the Historical society and museum. I have not given up hope for the old court house but there may be other opportunities in the wind. As a member of the Library you can now download and watch 6 free top of the line movie so per month on your tv or device. Long gone are the days when libraries were just the quiet place of research and reading. They are fast becoming community hubs.

nbn™ lands in Tea Gardens THE arrival of the nbn for the remainder of Tea Gardens will deliver huge opportunities for local homes and businesses to transform the way they operate. “It means one of the kids will be able to stream Netflix on the tablet while another watches a movie on the Telstra TV, and the parents can be working online on the laptop, all at the same time with a reliable connection,” explains Mr Marom.

Telstra is also reminding those living and working in Tea Gardens that switching to the nbn will not happen automatically.

Customers will have 18 months to contact their chosen network provider to arrange moving across to the new network, after which existing landline, data and internet services will be disconnected.

“We want everybody in the Tea Gardens to be able to start benefitting from the nbn as soon as possible. So, now is the time to speak to your chosen network provider about kick starting the switch on process,” said Mr Marom.

“Telstra has teams of dedicated nbn specialists online, on the phone and in-

store who will be able to help customers to determine the plan or bundle best suited to their needs. We also have teams on the ground to ensure that every member of Tea Gardens & Hawks Nest has the advice, support and confidence they need to get on board with the nbn.”

Through a partnership with Kanopy, the amazingly popular on-demand film streaming service, library card holders can access what New York Times describes as “a garden of cinematic delights”.

Content that covers movies, TV shows, documentaries, kids programs and more can be streamed from any computer, television, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, AppleTV or Chromecast.

“We’re really excited to be launching this free service,” says MidCoast Council’s Manager of Libraries, Chris Jones.

“The range of titles is incredible and offers content you just won’t find from other streaming services, as well as popular and current titles. You could spend years working your way through them all.”

Hospital Pearls donation handover ON Friday morning, 19 July a very welcoming morning tea was organised by staff at Bulahdelah Hospital, hosting a gathering of members from both the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary and the Pearls of Port Stephens.

The Group get together enabled a cheque handover of $1000k from the Pearls to finalise the purchase of a new Spirometer for the hospital.

A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs.

Lion Sandra Bell spoke of her year as President and was happy to hand over the gavel and gong to incoming President Peter Webb.

Three new members were inducted on the night. All happy and excited about being members of Lions, serving their community and making new friends.

Doug said, “We have a couple more waiting in the wings.”

Master of Ceremonies for the night, Lion Helen Watkins said, “Our focus is on building the club with fun and friendship our main aim and service to our community our best outcome.”

One goal is to investigate the possibility of a walkway between Peter Sinclair   Gardens and Jimmy’s Beach. Watch this   space.  The future of the Lions Club of Tea   Gardens looks bright.    All in all, a very good night.

TEA Gardens Lions gathered at Mumm’s on the Myall on Tuesday 2 July for the Club’s annual changeover dinner.

It was a time of celebration for the Club.

They have had a great year.

Lions Secretary Doug Allen said, “We are really proud of our achievements this year.”

ELEVEN members of Myall Masters Swimming Club travelled to Woy Woy on 21 July to compete in the NSW State Relay Meet.

The swimmers, Peter Kellaway, Michael Rose, Adrian Reynolds, Stephen Rees, Leon Bobako, Laurie Vickery, Christopher Lock, Brad Jensen, Cheryl Rose, Sharon Taylor & Linda Stubbs all did the Club proud.

There were 267 swimmers representing 17 clubs and Myall managed to take out seven first placings, five second placings & two 3rd placings.

At the end of the day Myall finished overall in 10th position, second place to Port Macquarie in Country teams. Port Macquarie had 23 swimmers, Myall had eleven.
