By John SAHYOUN INFRASTRUCTURE backlog and the new Council’s main office location have been common topics raised by the community during the latest round of MidCoast update meetings.

Deputy Mayor, Katheryn Smith, said plans are in place for a $30 million works program to start and address the $180 million backlog.

“If we are successful in obtaining a $50 million grant from the state government and borrowing $50 million at the low interest rate, that’s an additional $100 million program to tackle the backlog of works,” Cr Smith told News Of The Area.

HSC Kicks Off DOZENS of Myall Coast students are amongst the thousands across New South Wales who began their Higher School Certificate written examinations this week.

The exams kicked off on Monday when

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), a total of 117 examinations have been scheduled during the 17-day period.

In a message to

students, NESA CEO David de Carvalho, said to “stay calm and just do your best”.

“You have spent months preparing for these exams and the most important thing you can do over the next few weeks is to stay positive,” he said.

“You have worked hard to get this far and

completing your HSC is an achievement of which you can be proud.”

Around 78,000 students are enrolled in at least one HSC course and more than 70,000 will complete their HSC this year.

The HSC is the highest educational achievement in NSW secondary education.

In 2015, the Retail Trading Act 2008 was amended to permit state wide trading on Boxing Day in 2015 and 2016. The 2015 amendments allowed all shops and bank branches to open on Boxing Day on the condition that staff freely elected to work without being coerced, harassed, threatened or intimidated to do so.

The 2015 amendments were required to be reviewed in 2017 to see whether Boxing Day trade should continue beyond 2016.

A review of the legislation was conducted earlier this year in consultation with major retailers, their representative organisations, unions and other industry stakeholders to ascertain their experience of Boxing Day trading in 2015 and 2016. The review

found that the extension of Boxing Day trading was a success. As a result of the findings made, on 25 September 2017 the Retail Trading Amendment (Boxing Day) Act 2017 came into force allowing Boxing Day trade to continue.

Employers should be aware that while the 2017 amendments permit Boxing Day Trade to continue, it is an offence for an employee to be coerced to work on Boxing Day. An employer can be fined up to $11,000.00 if they are found to have forced an employee to work on Boxing Day. Employers who do not wish to trade on Boxing Day should also be aware that the legislation introduced fines of up to $22,000.00 for any landlord who forces a retailer to open on Boxing Day.

ART lovers are in for a treat at this year’s Myall River Festival in Tea Gardens.

Local artist Larna J. Clarke and Photographer Simon Wilson are literally popping up at the festival.

The pair is opening a pop up shop on the corner of Myall and Maxwell Street, the shop space being donated by Hawks Nest Antenna Services and Travel Agent Jeremy Nolan.

Larna J’s love of art has been a lifelong journey.

“I was drawing, painting and creating ‘Mud Figurines’ from a young age, which was encouraged by my talented grandparents,” Larna told News Of The Area.

She went on to study all forms of art from painting to photography and ceramics.

But her working life took her off the artistic path for a while.

“I became a qualified motor mechanic, spare parts interpreter and later a truck driver,” Larna said.

However, Larna suffered a debilitating accident while working in the mines in 2008 and she eventually moved to Hawks Nest for a ‘sea change’ in 2013.

“Meeting Glenn Callaghan, who was the artist in residence, at ’Callaghans Gallery’ at Hawks Nest was a return to positives in my life,” Larna said.

“He encouraged me to return to my love of art, and within weeks I was painting again.”

Mrs GH, Boat Harbour Dear Mrs GH, WHEN I read your conundrum, I actually thought you were writing about ‘adults only’ colouring-in books, which I must confess I had not heard of before.

I then thought that this was a great concept and decided to quit my multiple day (and night) jobs and focus on the patent.

However, during the research and development stage, I quickly realised that not only are there already ‘adults only’ colouring-in books, there’s also a series called ‘Colour me Drunk: A Drinking and Drawing Activity Book’; Colouring for Grown-Ups (with an odd graphic of a half-colouredin man and a woman holding her blanket to her chest); ‘The Killer Weed Colouring Book: for Marijuana Lovers’; ‘Profanity: an honest colouring book for people who are mad as hell’ and one called ‘Frig Off, I’m Colouring’ (or words to that effect), for the passive-aggressive colourer.

You would assume that I am just making this stuff up, Mrs GH, but I can assure you I am not.

It seems that the market is pretty well saturated.

That is a real shame, because I have only had about three marketable ideas in my entire lifetime.

Number one was an advertisement for conserves where little jam caricatures danced around to that ‘80s hit ‘Pump up the Jam’, but instead it was ‘Plump up the Jam’, get it? The jam was full of plump fruit.

The other brilliant idea was a deterrent for heroin addicts called . . . oh, forget it. I give up.

Back to the drawing board, Mrs GH. Regarding your colouring-in books, I really don’t understand all that mindfulness stuff. I’m too highly strung, my dear.

Dear News Of The Area, WHEN MidCoast Council decommissioned the solar heating of the Tea Gardens Pool during the last summer season, there was an outcry of dissatisfaction directed towards Council for their inability to manage a much needed and valued community asset.

In March a petition collected 1,010 signatures to have the solar reinstalled and maintenance issues fixed.

The collective and ongoing community lobbying of Mid Coast Council and Kate Washington MP, Member for Port Stephens

has been successful and Council has agreed to fund the reinstallation of solar heating to Tea Gardens Pool.

The maintenance issues are also being attended to.

Our community should be extremely satisfied that MidCoast Council has listened to the voice of the people on this issue.

Your emails, phone calls, letters and personal representations have been heard!

The collaborative manner in which Paul De Szell, Director, Community Spaces and Services, has communicated with the major user groups of the

pool has been refreshingly positive and professional.

Kate Washington has been a strong advocate to our cause, approaching Council on the community’s behalf.

But it is you, the community, who have fought to maintain an acceptable standard for our pool.

The major user groups of the pool have also worked tirelessly to achieve the improvements at the pool for the whole community to use.

Rich Fuel, Lean Electricity Dear News Of The Area, MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead, National Party, is to be commended for taking action over fuel prices (NOTA 12/10).

However, when approached to address Electricity charges,all is quiet.

We reside in an Essential Energy area (Country), where our Supply Access Charge(SAC)is $1.70/day compared to Ausgrid’s(City) 80c/day, TWICE as much.

That is a significant difference, far greater than 15c/L difference on fuel.

Four fifths of NSW is in

an Essential Energy area, that is owned by the NSW Government raking in huge profits.

When you think about it, why would they do anything to address this inequity?

John Barilaro, the Deputy Leader of NSW and Leader of the National Party, assured listeners on radio 2HD Newcastle in November 2017, that his intention was to address the inequality between country and city residents.

I contacted Mr Barilaro on two occasions regarding the inequity in the Electricity SAC. At this stage, almost

12 months later, I have not received any reply.

Furthermore, I have contacted the Federal Minister for Energy, the Hon Josh Frydenberg on this issue, with the same result.

It’s obvious, that it is all lip service.

Mr Bromhead, your concern for Myall Lakes residents is touching.

There is no need to call in the ACCC on this issue, if you and your leader Mr Barilaro, are interested in fairness for country residents, this can be changed with the stroke of a pen.

SECURING a place at university ahead of the HSC examinations relieves the pressure for Year 12 students Tom Locke and Emma Miller.

“It is a great feeling knowing that university is going to be a part of my future,” Tom said.

“It’s a huge weight off my shoulders and relieves the pressure of sitting the exams.”

The pair from Bulahdelah Central School received their early admission offers from the University of Wollongong last week.

Tom said he now has several options to consider after being accepted into two degrees; a Bachelor of Psychological Science and a combined Bachelor of Psychological Science/ Bachelor of Commerce.

“I hope it will lead to human resource work or a job that helps people like counselling,” he said.

Emma said she is “very excited” to have been accepted into a Bachelor of Business and hopes her university studies will lead to a career in accounting.

Old Friends Catch Up

DOZENS of old friends gathered at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last weekend to catch up, reminisce and share memories of growing up together.

The friends came from near and far for the popular reunion, with conversations and constant laughter ensuring the fun continued well into the afternoon.

The Old Friends CatchUp was organised by two old friends, Joan Cheers and Irene Worth.

Joan said although many old friends have moved away, the bond of friendship is still as strong as ever.

“The best thing about the day is that we all get together and catch up,” she said.

“Everyone is happy, we just love being together.”

Mixed Pairs 13 October With the Palm Lake sponsored Mixed Pairs taking place over the weekend there was no Friday Jackpot Bowls played today.

14-15 October Eighteen teams participated in the Palm Lake Annual Mixed Pairs played over the weekend.

Organisers were keeping their fingers crossed that the weather would remain fine.

Three games of 10 ends were played on Saturday and two games of 10 ends played on Sunday.

The Saturday games just made it through before the rain started to fall.

Only two teams survived unscathed on Saturday

which set up some exciting contests for the next day.

They say that cream rises to the top and such was the case on Sunday when shortpriced favourites, Vicki Rankin and Sean Mearrick kept their unblemished record intact.

They finished with an overall margin of 48 shots.

Robyn and Scott Beaumont were tipped to push the winners all the way but they dropped their last match to run second.

They had a margin of 32 shots; just edging out third placegetters, Olive McKeown and Danny Johnson on 27.

During the presentation of prizes, Bowling Club President, Max Stephens praised the Palm Lake Resort for their support of bowls in Tea Gardens area.

Kim Bright, representing Palm Lake Resort, reinforced that commitment.

He also praised all those

Trophy Day Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

TUESDAY 10 October: No social bowls played due to a tournament being played.

Wednesday 11 October: 18 bowlers travelled to Karuah RSL Bowling Club to participate in the Ruth Bowden Trophy Day. This is an annual event between the two clubs.

Eighteen bowlers, 6 teams for Triples.

Scores from each team are added together to determine the winner.

Play commenced at 10.00am and finished at 12.15pm.

Scores were calculated from results after 14 ends.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club has won the Trophy for the last 15 years, unfortunately this year the Karuah Bowlers out bowled our teams winning 91 v 84.

TGWBC are determined to win the Trophy next year and hopefully for the next 15 years.

Despite losing a great day was had by all, thanks to the ladies from Karuah.

Morning tea and lunch amazing, it’s hard to be rivals when you are such a hospitable group.

Thursday 12 October: Just a small group of bowlers turned up for social bowls. Those present enjoyed a “roll up”, the format was a practice session for consistency in preparation for the Open Consistency Competition commencing on Tuesday 17 October.
