There are so many dolls that not even collector and creator Olga Leary knows just how many she owns, but it would have to be in the thousands.

There are beaded dolls, dolls that date back to the last century, baby dolls, grandma dolls, so many dolls that it is truly an overwhelming collection.

“I cannot leave anything alone, I have to fix it, dress it,” “My husband used to help me and he was just as engrossed as I was,” Olga said.

“He’d find a doll in an op shop and he’d say you don’t have this one.”

Sadly Olgas husband Tony passed away just over a year ago but she promised him she would eventually open her collection to the community.

Remarkably, 77 year old Olga only began creating and collecting dolls and teddies 5 years ago.

The not-for profit community art group “Galleries in the Gardens” has turned the once neglected house into a permanent home for the works of its creative members who are all local to the Myall Coast.

Having traded now for a few weeks, The Gallery has already attracted over 1,900 visitors and received lots of positive comments

not only for the beautiful surrounds, but also the quality and variety of artwork inside.

“It is an exciting time for Galleries In the Gardens (GIG), President of the Group, Trevor Cook said.

“We have been delighted with the feedback.”

“Quite a few visitors have said The Gallery compares favourably with those in the capital cities,” Trevor added.

“I’m going to open the room to the public every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm,” Olga said.

who have rejuvenated this landmark inside and out over the last five months.”

Now it is time for the grand opening of this latest Tea Gardens attraction, the celebration to be held on Friday 19 January from 5 pm to 8pm.

Mark Tedeschi, AM QC, who once owned ‘Nicole’s Café’, will officially open The Gallery.

Mr Tedeschi is an award-winning photographer and author with a strong interest in the arts, a high-profile

barrister and law professor.

The group’s latest artworks will be on display and a fundraising raffle will give the chance to win three special paintings by artist Lorna Hopcroft.

The Gallery is open every day except Tuesdays, 10am to 4pm.

Shortly, on Wednesdays, the group will recommence ArtSpeak, where members and others gather to get creative while socialising.

The Myall Coast is gearing up to celebrate Australia Day on Friday 26 January with a huge program of community events planned for the region.

THE Myall Coast is gearing up to celebrate Australia Day on Friday 26 January with a huge program of community events planned for the region.

Celebrations at Hawks Nest are being organised by Tea Gardens Lioness Club and include the annual Citizen of the Year presentation.

“We are hoping that all locals and visitors can come along,” she said.

“All money raised will go back into the local community.”

Eight-year-old Claire Tufrey said she will be dressing in Aussie colours for the festivities.

“It’s always lots of fun and I am looking forward to enjoying the day with my family and friends,” she said.

Karuah RSL Club is known to go all out for their celebrations, and this year is certainly no different.

The event is modelled on a country show and includes food and cooking

Bulahdelah: Court House Museum The event is being organised by the Historical Society and will commences at 5.30pm with tours through the museum.

The evening will conclude with a local history audio-visual presentation.

Hawks Nest: Moira Parade Park The festivities commence at 8.00am and run until midday.

The program includes Aussie games for the children, music, entertainment, the 2018 Citizen of the Year presentation and a flypast from Williamtown RAAF. Sausage sandwiches, bacon and egg rolls, damper, lamingtons and drinks will be on sale at a very reasonable price.

Karuah: RSL Club An amateur produce competition and auction will begin at 12.30pm followed by a thong throwing at 2.00pm and fun bowls at 3.00pm.

The function room will come alive with music from Jumpin Jukebox from 4.00pm..

The celebrations will continue into the evening and will conclude with a fireworks display at 9.00pm.

The NSW Court of Appeal recently considered the respective liabilities of a landlord, managing agent and tenant arising out of the collapse of a balcony at a rental property at Collaroy.

The landlord had engaged an agent to manage their rental property.

During the tenancy, the tenant raised numerous issues concerning the state of repair of the upstairs balcony. The agent obtained quotes for repairs and forwarded these to the landlord however these were not acted on.

The balcony subsequently collapsed injuring 4 people. The injured persons commenced proceedings against the landlord and the agent for their injuries. The landlord and agent issued cross claims against each other and also against the tenant.

breach of its obligations under its management agreement by failing to properly investigate or recommend the landlord obtain expert advice on the structural integrity of the balcony and taking steps to prevent access to the balcony until this occurred.

On appeal, it was held that the landlord was also liable. It was found that being aware of the tenant’s complaints, a reasonable landlord should have formed the view the agent was not discharging its duty and instructed the agent to do so.

The landlord’s liability was assessed at 30%.

It was also held on appeal that the tenant was liable. It was found that a reasonable tenant having expressed concerns as to the safety of the balcony, should have prevented access to the balcony until its structural integrity had been properly investigated and the tenant’s liability was assessed at 20%.

“I feel ecstatic that I get the opportunity to do this,” she said.

“I am very honoured to be picked to be one of the representatives for the MidCoast region.”

Jennefer, who lives in Wang Wauk with her family, is an active member of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).

At 22 years of age, she is the youngest person ever in the Mid-North Coast region to qualify as a crew leader.

JENNEFER Trott said she is extremely proud to have been chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton on its way to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The baton will arrive in Tuncurry on 2 February, and Jenn is one 16 MidCoast residents who will take part in the relay on day 39 of its epic 100-day journey around Australia.

Kicking off at 4.20pm at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, baton bearers will work their way through the town, across the water by boat to John Holland Park, and finish up at Forster Ocean Baths around 5.40pm Jennefer, who will

Jennefer said being selected to carry the baton was an absolute shock.

“The first I knew about it was when I got an email telling me I had passed to the next stage of the selection process,” she said.

“It didn’t say who nominated me, and I am still not actually sure who did.”

The baton will arrive on the Gold Coast on 4 April where the Prince of Wales will read the Queen’s message during the Opening Ceremony of the XXI Commonwealth Games.

THE ‘Free Clinic Bus’ has been in operation for 26 years and is averaging over 200 passengers a year.

It has provided free transport for people from the Tea Gardens, Hawks

Nest, Pindimar, North Arm Cove and Karuah to medical and welfare appointments in Raymond Terrace, Maitland and Newcastle on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It is funded by local clubs

and organisations and is run and operated entirely by volunteers.

Stephanie Gordon, from the Hunter New England Health Transport, presented Certificates of Appreciation

to the volunteer drivers at a recent thank you lunch held at the Tea Gardens Country Club.

Stephanie said that she was not aware of any other community transport like it anywhere and it is estimated that the volunteer service saves the Hunter New England Health over $20,000 in transport costs each year.

Holiday spruce up A SUMMER holiday maintenance program of painting and roof work totaling almost $111,500 is currently underway at Bulahdelah Central School.

Relieving Principal Mrs Deb Gilbert said the work is being carried out across the school, targeting primarily the woodwork room and primary classrooms.

It is expected that the fresh lick of paint and roofing will be completed in time for the start of the new school year.

Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead announced that the works at Bulahdelah Central School are part of the $2.9 million currently being spent on school maintenance projects in the electorate.

“Every child deserves to

have access to great facilities, wonderful teachers and get an excellent education and that is what we are delivering for students here in the Myall Lakes,” he said.

“Just like your family home, there are always jobs to be done to keep our schools in top condition.”

Mr Bromhead said, “We are making good use of the summer break to carry out important projects while students are off enjoying their holidays.”

The summer holiday blitz is part of the NSW Government’s record $747 million school maintenance investment over the next four years announced in the 2017 Budget.

Mr Bromhead said this will allow every NSW school to have their maintenance project list slashed by December 2018.

FOR lovers of reading there was no better place to be than at Rotary’s recent Giant Book Sale held in the Hawks Nest Community Hall.

The three day event has turned into a must do for holiday makers and locals alike with 10,000 books on offer.

It takes months of planning and gathering the

books before the frantic last ditch effort by dozens of volunteers to ensure the sale goes off without a hitch.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is also calling for the introduction of a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages to help tackle obesity.

The most recent national health report card reveals 22.4 percent of children aged two to 17 in Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah are overweight or obese, slightly below the national average of 25.8 percent.

The National Health Tracker, released by Australian Health Policy Collaboration, also shows that two in three adults in the Myall Coast region are

overweight.

AMA President, Dr Michael Gannon, said eating habits and attitudes toward food are established in early childhood.

“If we can establish healthy habits from the start, it is much more likely that they will continue throughout adolescence and into adulthood,” he said.

But for children looking for ways to keep cool this summer, frozen sugary drinks are certainly a tempting option.

The Australian Beverages Council claim that slapping a small tax onto the cheap drinks will do little to deter children from consuming them.

Young people may be surprised to know that hiding in their large, syrupy frozen treat are as many as 21 teaspoons of sugar, more than three times the recommended daily intake.

While indulging in a frozen beverage as an occasional treat certainly isn’t a problem, health experts warn there is a link between regularly consuming sugary drinks and being overweight.

This can lead to a myriad of chronic health problems including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Dr Gannon said improving the nutrition and eating habits of Australians must become a priority for all levels of Government.

My boyfriend bought me a puppy for my birthday. I was about to break up with him, but the puppy is really cute and I don’t have the heart to do it now.

Miss KL, Medowie WELL, Miss KL, this is a conundrum on a number of levels. To start with, and I am being deadly serious here, you should never buy anyone a pet for a present. Pets are something that require careful consideration, adequate shelter and fencing, and a healthy bank account.

It is not just the initial outlay, it is the ongoing maintenance: tick treatments, worming, bathing and grooming, replacing the twelve chooks down the road that your dog decided to maul, relining the wall on your rental property after your dog (which is prohibited under your rental agreement) chewed a dog-shaped hole through it, and so on. Your boyfriend did a wellintentioned, but silly thing.

Next is the issue of being stuck with this guy because of a dog. Have you read Careful, He Might Hear You or watched Kramer vs Kramer?

Your life could become just like that. I sincerely hope you have both written a prenuptial agreement (or in this case a prepuptial agreement). There are important things to consider when you inevitably part ways. Who will continue the puppy obedience sessions?

Who will pay for the dog’s needs in winter (puppy coat, blanket, raincoat and so on)? Will you split custody 50/50, or will one of you have to pay dog support? What if you are deemed to be unfit parents? What if, heaven forbid, the dog knocks up another dog and you are left with a litter of pit-bull-cross-poodle pups and you start to look like one of those families from The Jerry Springer Show?

Just like those first weeks with a new boyfriend, early days with a pup are full of slobbery kisses, cute photos, gourmet meals and walks along the beach. The long haul, however, is quite a different story. I hope you’re up for it, Miss KL. Pups, like boyfriends, can eventually grow into different beasts altogether.

ANOTHER year of bowling kicked off on 9 January for our lady bowlers.

Unfortunately this year has begun on a sad note with the unexpected passing of one of our most treasured bowlers.

Nola Jackson joined TGWBC in April 1996, she represented our club in Pennants, bowled in winning teams for Club

Championship in the Triples and Fours, Runner up in the Club Pairs Competition on two occasions, assisted with the Sunday Introduction to Bowls, was a National Umpire, mentor to new bowlers,served on the Match Selection Committee and a friend to many.

To sum it up Nola was a great asset to the women’s bowling club and we will all miss her. Gone but not forgotten, forever with us on the green.

Club Championship Fours Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

10 January The first day back at bowls saw many dusting off the cobwebs of the Christmas break Intermittent showers meant a late start but 46 players were unperturbed and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The winners were the Palm Lake combination of; Peter Jones, Neil Kibble, Ron Rowe and Alan Greenhalgh.

They amassed 55 points ahead of The Grange side of Peter Cheney, Tom Short, Graham Kelly and Dennis Ashbridge, who finished on 53 points.

12 January.

Eighteen players competed for bragging rights in the Open Friday Pairs competition.

Four teams finished on 30 points with the Triples team of; Barry Goode, David Ransome and Bill Whalan, edging out Bette Saillard and Geoff Page.

The teams of Col Saillard and Ross Barry and Ray Prigg and John Slater filled the minor placings.

13 January The Club Championship Fours started today with four teams competing in oppressive heat and humidity.

Valliant Frank Dunn, playing whilst quite ill, had to be replaced by Merv Mills in the Denis Wilberforce team.

The team went on to win comfortably 26-8 over the Geoffrey Muggleton four.

In the other match, the highly favoured Sean Mearrick team were almost unseated by the Danny Johnson four.

An extra end was required to decide the match with Sean’s team winning 2120.

14 January The second round of the Club Fours Championship was played today in contrasting conditions of Saturday.

Strong southerly winds and intermittent squalls played havoc on the greens and it was a credit to the bowlers for completing their matches.

The Col Amos team accounted for the Bill Thrift team 21-6 with the match called off at the 13th end.
