Out In Force For Blue Light THE beaming smiles on hundreds of faces last weekend said it all, the launch of the Bulahdelah Blue Light Program was a roaring success.

The School Arts Hall was bursting at the seams with excited children, parents and community members who were kept entertained with plenty to see and do.

Bubble soccer and dancing were highlights

inside, and the interactive emergency services displays, giant checkers and free snags outside were a treat.

“The day was so good that I am already looking forward to the next one,” nine-yearold Charlie Garemyn said.

The event was an initiative of the Bulahdelah Blue Light Committee and was supported by the Lions Club,

“These events are important as they show the youths in our community that there are always people willing to help them and do things for them,” Lion Carol Tattersall said.

“They also demonstrate community spirit, and it was good to see the town come together and enjoy the day,” RFS member Meagan Terry added.

Raymond Terrace PCYC representative, Justine Russell, and Manning Great Lakes Crime Prevention Officer, Sn Constable Ray Slade, were also on hand to ensure a fun-filled day.

Sn Constable Ash Ray said the success of the day was due to the hard work of the local Blue Light Committee, the army of volunteers and the community who supported the event.

The successful launch of the program now gives the committee confidence moving forward.

“We are going to keep it going and continue to get the young people

together for heaps of other activities,” Sn Constable Dave Feeney said.

“We will also be getting ideas from the community about the types of things they would like see in the program.”

The local police are the driving force behind the initiative, and have contributed a great deal of

There was no rest for the pig, who also served customers at the Post Office and assisted with delivering the mail, before hitting the streets to spread the word about the new bank in town.

“Bendigo Bank will be offering the whole range of banking services, deposits, withdrawals, loans, the works, anything a bank can do, we can do,” Ms Lumby said.

“We are here for the long term, when we commit to something, we are always looking to make sure it succeeds.”

According to local Real Estate Agents, the average house price in Bulahdelah is around $310,000, which would save first home buyers about $9,400 in stamp duty.

In the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest area, the

median price ranges from $400,000 for older houses, up to $600,000 for newer homes, bringing savings of between $13,490 and $22,490.

The Myall Coast region is well known for having one of the oldest demographics in the country, but the removal of the stamp duty could see an influx of young buyers seeking more affordable housing.

According to local

agents, there has already been an increase in the number of couples and young families buying in both Bulahdelah and Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest.

“Historically, it has been a place where a lot of retirees come,” James Murphy from Tea Gardens Real Estate said.

“But we have seen a huge change in demographics, and now there are many people who work in Newcastle and other areas coming here, as they can easily travel because of the road

It’s been a frustrating few months for the Myall Koala and Environment group in its quest to have the fault remedied.

MidCoast Council told News Of The Area, “The rechargeable battery was initially faulty and this was replaced under warranty, however the sign was still not working.”

At that time the Full Court of the Family Court had determined an appeal by the husband following the trial judge’s decision to not deduct the future tax liability of a family-owned tourism business before dividing the property between the parties.

The Full Court determined that the trial judge had fallen into error by not deducting the liability.

The matter has now come back before the Court to re-determine

the proper division of property between the parties.

The Court has adjusted the decision of the trial judge that the husband pay to the wife the sum of $648,758, by reducing that payment by $116,057. As the trial judge’s orders had already been implemented the wife is required to repay the husband $116,057. That was the effect of the Court having not taken into account the tax liability in determining the value of the assets available for division.

Driveway Scam

A TEA Gardens man is warning residents to be alert to travelling conmen after being fleeced out of $500 last week.

Bruce Chapman said he was approached at his home by two men with English accents, offering to repair and seal his concrete driveway.

“The older man, who looked like he was in his late 40s, said they had all the equipment in their truck as they had just finished a job down the road,” Bruce told News Of The Area.

“The man said the work on the driveway would take about two to three hours and they could do it that day.”

Bruce said he had

previously made enquiries about having his driveway sealed, which is probably why he wasn’t alarmed at the time.

“We were aware of what needed to be done, then these guys came along and offered to do exactly what other professionals had told us, it all sounded quite good,” he said.

Bruce paid the men after the job was completed, but only discovered how shoddy the workmanship was after the concrete had dried.

“We didn’t realise it was a scam until we tried to contact them to come and fix the job,” Bruce said.

“We’re out of pocket, but more than anything, I’m angry for being sucked into

Family Fun Day a success ON 13 May the local community came together to make the Estia Health Tea Gardens Family Fun Day a great success, with over $1200 raised for the local Lions Club.

Around 200 guests visited the home throughout the day.

Activities and familyfriendly entertainment included trash and treasure, line dancing, Gus’s bush ballads, a ukulele group, balloon twister, bouncing castle, face painting and more.

Stallholders added to the diversity and vibrancy of the event.

Generous donations from sponsors and local businesses contributed to

lucky door prizes and a raffle, with a large gift basket being the major prize.

Contributions from Harvey Norman, BT’s for Fashion, Sumeru, BYO Cellars, Alana’s Flowers and Gifts, Take It Easy Kayaks, McGraths Meats and TG facility catering all helped make the event possible.

The Lions Club worked hard all day on the barbecue to raise additional funds.

Estia Health’s Sue Nash said that staff and residents alike were extremely pleased with the way the day went, generating a lot of positive feedback.

“Some of our visitors were surprised by the spaciousness, style and pleasant ambience of our

home. Many commented on how much they enjoyed the visit. That was great, because we pride ourselves on being welcoming for residents and visitors alike.”

Sue explained that as an integral part of the local community, Estia Health Tea Gardens participates in many local activities and was pleased to invite the community into the home.

Rate Rise Raises Ire

At the MCC Extraordinary Meeting on May 31, Administrator Turner bluntly rejected arguments from speakers against the proposed rate increase (SRV2017).

These arguments highlighted lack of consultation and other issues from Council.

He then stated that he considered the matter had been “well ventilated”, and immediately went ahead with an application to IPART for a 28.5% rate increase over four years.

The increase proposed for 2017– 2018 alone is 11.0%, and by 2021 former Great Lakes households will be paying rates of $3400 and more per annum, more than many Sydney ratepayers.

In the opinion of many they have failed to do this, so if we don’t want this rate increase, we must let IPART know that: 1) MCC has been very vague about why this increase is needed now; 2) and has failed miserably to follow its own community consultation guidelines, which is why awareness of the increase is so poor; 3) MCC has not adequately investigated other funding options (the Midcoast Water takeover potentially provides a lot of extra dollars), and 4) the MCC Administrator was appointed, not elected, has only four months remaining in office before Council elections, and has no ratepayer mandate to make such far-reaching changes.

We also need to let IPART know that the area has

We have purchased two acres, and ever since, friends and family have asked if they can store their boats, caravans and other assorted items on the land. Some have even started dumping their green waste and excess furniture. Recently a relative dumped a load of concrete and suggested we bury it. An acquaintance asked if he could store some things in our shed, and ended up unloading bricks and rubble under several trees. What should we do?

Time is running out on making a submission to IPART regarding the ambit claim of nearly, a 30% increase in our Land Rates.

We have until 30 of June to make a submission.

Don’t forget to include the following when making your submission.

1. There have been no elected representatives on council, representing the ratepayers.

2. There has been no discussion regarding the current Special Rate Variation (SRV) Proposal.

3.

The Act was mysteriously changed to exempt MCC from the Act, that restricted merged councils from applying for a rate increase for four years.

Over the past 20 years, GLC has received numerous increases well above the CPI, in some years, thrice the CPI. Its time to take a stand.

The MCC area consists mainly of self-funded retirees and pensioners governed by CPI increases.

In four years our rates will be approaching $3000, that’s $60/week not the average $1500 rate that’s quoted.

We must take action by expressing our thoughts in a submission to IPART (ipart@ ipart.nsw.gov.au).

If you are going to be treated as the waste transfer station, you may as well collect the funds that go with it.

No payment and a For Sale sign gets slapped on the offending vehicle.

I’m pretty sure your troubles will soon be over.

New Etching Press

IT was a case of out with the old and in with the new at the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre last Friday.

The group now has a brand new etching press.

At the same time the old press now has a brand new home at Bulahdelah Centre School.

The old press had given many years of faithful service

to the craft community.

“Many years ago a former member had printing skills and she had a contact who was getting rid of their old printer and it ended up here,” Leigh Allen told News Of The Area.

Fast forward and the printer group has grown and become more skilled and the decision was made to buy a new press.

280 members of the Myall Craft group as well as a number of workshops which helped raise the $6,000 for the machine.

“We thought about trying to sell the old printer on Gumtree but realised it would be better to give it away and Bulahdelah School was a perfect fit.”

Craft members have also offered to lend a helping hand to teach the school how to operate it.

The group’s new etching machine will bring a whole new range of printing capabilities.

Susan Truscott from the Arts and Craft Centre said, ‘’We’re hopeful that the printer may bring younger members who might be interested in learning the process.”

Bulahdelah School Principal Don Hudson said, “It will allow our art students to do a lot more creatively.”

“We very much appreciate the donation.”

It was a dark and stormy night, but that didn’t deter the large crowd who gathered at the Tea Gardens Hotel last Friday for the opening of the annual ‘Winter Warmer’ Exhibition.

IT was a dark and stormy night, but that didn’t deter the large crowd who gathered at the Tea Gardens Hotel last Friday for the opening of the annual ‘Winter Warmer’ Exhibition.

Among the art enthusiasts, was Port Stephens MP Kate Washington.

“These events are so important for our wellbeing, our quality of life and good for the soul,” Kate said.

“To be able to come and support such a beautiful event like this, I’ll keep doing it for as long as I’m asked.”

This year’s theme for the ‘Galleries in the Gardens’ artists was ‘Habitat’.

“We’ve had some terrific results,” GIG President Lee

Anderson said.

“We’re thrilled with the turnout.”

The difficult job of judging the works of art, ceramics and sculptures went to Kim Blunt, Senior Curator at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

“As a judge, I spent several hours going through the artworks,” Kim told News Of The Area.

“The standard was very high and I got down to a shortlist of 15 and then to get it down to three was really difficult as you need to be fair across the different mediums.”

First prize went to Wendy Earnshaw for her painting ‘Going Home’. ‘’I was absolutely shocked and thrilled,” Wendy said.

“It was a painting I put my

soul into because I love this area.”

Local artist Cheryl Cook won second prize for her landscape ‘Myall Dunes’.

Cheryl was also thrilled, her painting also selling on the night.

“I’ve been painting since the age of four.”

Cheryl added, “My first prize was a pair or rosary beads for a painting I did at primary school.”

Third prize went to long time artist Gail Morphett.

The art enthusiasts dined out on delicious canapes and mulled wine, courtesy of the new hotel owners, Emily and Ben Hanson.

Quilt Tribute for Fire Fighters

NEWS Of The Area was invited to a very special gathering of the Karuah River Craft Group last week.

The occasion was the unveiling of a beautiful quilt created in honour of their local fire fighters.

The idea for the quilt was born out of the devastating bushfires that surrounded the town last November.

“It was very frightening for everyone, especially the elderly, we were cut off in both directions, we didn’t know which way to go, we had no communication,” Jean Keeley told News Of The Area.

“We had no water or electricity for days.”

In the wake of the

emergency, the ladies of the craft group wanted to pay tribute and thank the local volunteers of their Karuah Rural Fire Service.

“We thought it would be nice to have something hanging in their kitchen so that when they got back from shifts they’d have something to relax and look at,” Judy Staples said.

Seven months later the quilt was finished but the group was faced with the problem of where to hang it.

“If you put a nail in the wall of the fire station it would fall down,” Rural Fire Service Captain Ken Smee said.

“With the rain, there’s water coming through the door and the walls,” Ken said.

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding Australians to stop and think before giving their personal details or hardearned money to scammers this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 48,084 scams were reported to the ATO between July and October last year.

“We have already seen a five-fold increase in scams from January to May this year and typically expect further increases during the tax time period,” Ms Anderson said.

“Already this year, the ATO has registered over 17,067 scam reports. Of these, 113 Australians handed over $1.5 million to fraudsters with about 2,500 providing some form of personal information, including tax file numbers.

“One victim lost $900,000 to scammers over the course of several months, even borrowing money from family and friends.

“The large number of people lodging their tax returns means scammers are particularly active, so it’s important to keep an eye out for anything that looks

suspicious and protect your private information.”

Ms Anderson said Australians are generally good at catching and reporting scams, but some scams are harder to spot than others.

“Scammers locate genuine ATO numbers from our website and project these numbers in their caller ID in an attempt to legitimise their call – a form of impersonation known as ‘spoofing’. While we do make thousands of calls per week to the community, our outbound calls do not project numbers on caller ID. If one appears, it’s most likely a scam.

“People should be wary of emails, phone calls and SMS

BCS also made the finals in the Year 8 competition, tasked with proving that ‘Fairy Tales Are Not Good for Children’ against a team from Taree Christian College.

Scammer Alert

“They couldn’t even hang it in the toilet because that’s a shipping container,” Joyce Armstrong said.

Not surprisingly, members of the Karuah Rural Fire Service have been campaigning for years for a new fire shed.

“I think it’s fantastic, it’s amazing how the community has come together, it’s just a shame we’ve got nowhere to hang it,” Ken said.

For now, the magnificent quilt will hang in the KWT centre in town, while the fire service continues its quest for a new home.

The Karuah River Craft group meets every Thursday between 10am and 2pm.

4. Recognise a scam If someone asks you for your bank account or personal details, or demands money, refunds or free gifts, be cautious. Also avoid requests in emails or SMS requesting you to click on a link to log onto government or banking digital services.

5. Report scams If you think you or someone you know might have been contacted by a scammer, or have fallen victim to a tax-related scam, contact the ATO on 1800 008 540.

TO play lawn bowls, you need a degree of hand-eye coordination, some motor skills, either walking or in a wheelchair, and an ability to roll a bowl up to 36 metres.

Now you will notice that I have not mentioned strength.

Unlike most sports, the fast twitch muscles that provide the speed and reaction in say golf, tennis, football or athletics are not needed to bowl.

While the clubs compete separately in association events at club and social levels, most games are mixed, the clubs actively volunteer to assist each other and even provide limited financial

support to each other where this is appropriate. This leads to many husbands and wives playing the sport together and a generally happier, friendlier and more family orientated atmosphere in the club rooms.

Indeed family groups often bowl together and the clubs’ junior development program has also benefited.

JOAN Cheers celebrated a milestone birthday last weekend, surrounded by more than 100 family and friends at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

Joan said the highlight of her 80 years, has been spending time with her two daughters, three grandchildren, extended family and friends.

“My goal was just having the love of family, and that, to me, is everything,” she said.

“I just think that family and friends keep you going, that’s my motto.”

Joan said she started kindergarten with many of her guests, and has always kept that friendship.

“I am so thrilled that everyone turned up here today, I can’t thank them enough,” she said.

Joan was born in Bulahdelah in 1937 and worked for 46 years in the bakery and butchers.

She also volunteered at the pool and for many other organisations including the nursing home.

Since retiring, Joan has travelled overseas and has taken more than 20 coach

“There’s just been so many changes over the years, everything is so modern now,” Joan said.

“When I think of what my mum had to work with when she had all of us at home compared to what I have today, it is just unreal.”

Joan told News Of The Area, she attributes her long and happy life to simply having a healthy lifestyle.

“I just think that you should keep moving and do something every day, like work for charity and keep your mind active that way,” she said.

“You should always care for people, and if there’s anything that upsets you, turn the other cheek and just sort it out.”

For the future, Joan said she simply plans to enjoy spending time with her family and friends, and just take every day as it comes.

Although Joan has moved to Newcastle to be closer to her children, she said she will always consider Bulahdelah home.

“I loved every day that I was here, it is still home to me, I just love it,” she said.

Seasonal Food Trail

LOCAL producers opened their farm gates to visitors over the long weekend, to showcase the huge variety of produce available along The Great Lakes Food Trail.

The event started in April this year, with the aim of connecting local and ethical producers with the community each season.

Free range eggs, pasture raised beef and lamb, wine,

organic fruit and baked goods were some of the many temptations on offer along the trail.

The wet weather caused havoc for Old Inn Road Winery, who were unable to open to the public due to flooding along the access road.

Julie Steepe from Lucy Land Merino Farm in Bulahdelah, said the conditions are all part of being a farmer.

“You have to learn to live with the dirt, the flies, the floods, excess water, mosquitoes and especially the drought,” she said.

“You have to enjoy the dry when it comes, and the wet when it comes.”

Julie said despite the soggy conditions, she was pleased with the constant flow of visitors throughout the day.

Public Notices NOTICE OF ABORIGINAL CONSULTATION - TEA GARDENS Environmental Resources Management Pty Ltd, on behalf of Tattersall Lander Pty Ltd, is proposing to undertake an Indigenous Cultural Heritage Assessment associated with a small modification to the approved Riverside Tea Gardens development. This project will also include an updated Cultural Heritage Management Plan to include the revised development footprint. The focus of this heritage assessment will be the additional 5.83 ha of land in the south west of the development footprint, off Myall Quays Boulevard.
