Each State and Territory has passed model amendments to existing domestic violence legislation to enable the consistent recognition of interstate orders. The terminology and laws remain unique to each jurisdiction, as do the conditions in the orders. The key elements of the Scheme include:

• A domestic violence order (DVO) made in any Australian State or Territory on or after 25 November 2017, is automatically recognised and enforceable in each other State and Territory. They include final and interim orders.

• Applications to vary a nationally recognised order can be made in any State or Territory.

• For DVOs made before 25 November 2017 to be recognised and enforceable in a State or Territory other than the one in which they

were made, a discrete application must be made for registration in each other State or Territory in which protection is sought.

• A nationally recognised order prevails over an earlier comparable local order or comparable interstate order (and the earlier order stops having effect).

• Application can be made to the clerk of the Local Court for DVOs made in New Zealand to become a recognised order in Australia. The perpetrator does not need to be given notice or an opportunity to be heard.

It can then be varied in Australia.

• Australian orders can, on application, be registered and enforceable in New Zealand.

• Information will be shared across borders between police and courts through a new national database.

DUST, noise and other issues have left residents living near the Bulahdelah Stroud and Lee Street roadworks fuming.

But there is no end in sight to the troubles just yet, with MidCoast Council confirming the works will not be completed by Christmas as expected.

“A combination of bad weather and discovery of subgrade conditions worse than expected has now seen the construction timeline extend into 2018,” a Council spokesperson said.

But after seven months of living with excessive dust and noise, residents are fed up.

The Council spokesperson said a

St Hilliers were awarded the contract for the Bulahdelah roadworks and are utilising several different sub-contractors to assist with the construction.

Local Photographer Snaps Up Awards

LOUISE Richards’ ability to capture the Myall Coast in all its beauty has been rewarded at one of Australia’s most popular photography competitions.

At the recent ‘Focus’ Awards, Louise entered five photographs and was awarded a Silver and four Bronze awards.

“My image that won the Silver Award features the beautiful old trees up on the hill on the road into Tea Gardens, a beautiful dramatic country scene I took earlier this year,” Louise told News Of The Area.

“I was heading into town to capture the sunset on the beach, when I saw the rainbow above the iconic trees.”

“I quickly pulled over to capture the magic scene, the light was so beautiful, the rainbow remaining right throughout the entire sunset.”

This year’s ‘Focus’

Awards attracted over 1800 entries from photographers all over Australia and New Zealand.

“The Awards are designed to encourage photographers at all stages of development to improve their skills and confidence and every entry receives feedback by the 3 world class judges,” Louise said.

“I moved into the landscape, seascape and the nature genre after spending 25 years as a portrait photographer.”

AUSTRALIA has officially become the twenty sixth country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.

On a historical day on Thursday last week, the House of Representatives

passed the Bill that has enabled same-sex couples to marry in Australia.

The first legal same-sex marriages will take place in Australia from 9 January 2018 after Attorney-General George Brandis stated that couples had to give one month’s notice of their intention to marry.

However, after GovernorGeneral Peter Cosgrove signed the Bill into law on Friday, all existing marriages performed overseas will be recognised at midnight on Friday night.

In a day full of drama, the Lower House officially voted on the Bill that had come about through the successful

“Yes” vote in the recent plebiscite where 61.6% of those who completed the survey, voted in favour of allowing same-sex marriage in Australia.

The Federal seat of Lyne was strong in support for the ‘Yes’ vote, as was the seat of Paterson, which had a stronger “Yes” vote than the national rate with 65.5%.

In an unusually strong show of united support in the House of Representatives, only four members officially voted “No” while ten members, including ex-Prime Minister Tony Abbott, abstained from voting.

In the end, the final vote was an emphatic result.

$3,000 towards cancer clinical trials THE annual Myall Coast Veteran Golfers Cancer Charity Day has raised $3,000 towards cancer clinical trials research.

Around 140 golfers attended the annual charity event at Hawks Nest Golf Club, with all proceeds and donations received on the day going to TROG Cancer Research.

add that if approaches and pedestrian crossings were added at both ends of the bridge me and the many other elderly people ,whose only transport is mobility scooters , will have much safer access from Tea Gardens to Hawks nest.

I have been lobbying for this unsuccessfully to local Council and community representatives and think it is a major safety concern.

Miss KN, Raymond Terrace Dear Miss KN, I BLAME this pressing problem on the DIY generation. Everything changed when reality TV came into our lives.

Suddenly we are all experts in trades that should take many years of on-the-job training and accredited qualifications.

Now, men and women of the suburbs reckon they can build a state-of-the-art cubby house in two hours with three pallets, a roll of hessian and a staple gun.

It gets worse, of course. Every Jack and Jill from the Terrace to Bulahdelah thinks they can buy a run-down shack and ‘flip it’ in five weeks in order to gain a cool $200,00. Women are getting their hair cut into stylish bobs and they are feigning Canadian accents saying things like, “That paint really makes the room pop!”

In the grand scheme of things, your mum’s foray into homemade Christmas decorations is pretty tame, though I do know how embarrassing it is when the guy at Bunnings asks your mum to produce identification because she’s buying up all the gold and silver spray cans like a cross between one of the local ‘boys in da hood’ and Glenda the good witch.

The only other positive I can see is that the money she saves will be usefully redirected towards your Christmas gifts.

Aaaargh . . . I just had a terrible thought.

Maybe she is making those as well. Just imagine when you open your gifts this year. You’ll receive a crocheted IPhone case (how cool), a pair of bedazzled denim shorts (fashion disasters always return if you wait long enough), and maybe you’ll even score a fancy new piece of contemporary art constructed from melted down forks, welded coathangers and pieces of silver-sprayed fishing line (what’s not to love?).

I hope you survive the festive season, Miss KN. I’ll be thinking of you while I pop a few rum balls.

Fresh Load of Bass

BULAHDELAH Fishing Club members poured thousands of baby bass into the Myall and Crawford Rivers last weekend to boost the local population of the native fish.

The release of the tiny fingerlings was part of a restocking program to ensure plenty of bass for years to come.

Fishing Club Treasurer John Carrall said one of the aims of the club is to ensure

good numbers of native bass in the local river systems.

“The original purpose of holding our annual Bass Bash competition was to help raise funds to restock the local rivers,” he said.

“We noticed there were not that many bass around and thought we had to do something about it.”

Mr Carrall said NSW Fisheries conducts an audit of the bass population in the rivers each year to ensure good numbers of the native

fish.

“This is the first time in five years that we have had to restock,” he said.

“The parent stock was taken from Nerong so the fingerlings are an exact genetic match to the bass in the local river and lake systems.”

Bulahdelah Fishing Club contributed $1,000 to the restocking with NSW Department of Primary Industries contributing an equal amount through the

Club Secretary Mel Smith said proceeds from the 2017 Bass Bash were poured into this year’s restocking.

“NSW Fisheries matched our donation dollar for dollar which allowed us to release 2273 fingerling into our rivers,” she said.

Mr Carrall told News Of The Area a strong native bass population helps to keep the river systems healthy.

“We have had some issues with European Carp, but having plenty of bass in the river actually acts as a deterrent to them,” he said.

The recent restocking will ensure plenty of bass will be available for the 26th

annual Bass Bash fishing competition which will be held in February 2018.

Great Year Success Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls

A GREAT night had by all that attended Presentation Night on Monday 4th December, for Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Clubs.

A big thank you to all those who worked so hard to make this night a success.

John Younghusband did a great job as MC, the dinner was delicious and the entertainment enjoyable.

Congratulations to all those who received prizes for winning Club Championship Events this year.

Tuesday 5th December social bowls played as usual.

Format for play was a game of Triples and 2 games of Fours with Pauline Perry playing “swinger” lead.

A big win for Ingrid Luck, Dorothy Thompson and Lynne Green 29 v Sheril Johnson, Bette Saillard and Pat Baker 12. A closer

contest between Dianne Kiss, Pam Gilchrist, Bev Rhodes and Sandra Leisemann 18 defeating Jean Glover, Jill McBride, Karen McPhie and Deyonne Page 14.

Pauline Perry had a win with Francis Betar, Bev Stephens and Dale Winter 17 v Bev Dunn, Lynda Richards and Maynie Roberts 15.

The winners on the day with the lowest winning margin were Pauline, Francis, Bev and Dale.

Thursday 7th December: ‘Break up day”.

Good to see so many lady bowlers present for the final day of bowls 2017. Prior to play 3 Spiders were played.

The winners of the Spider were Lynne Green, Pat Baker and Maynie Roberts.

This year TGWBC will be presenting a cheque for $350 to the Free Clinic bus, proceeds from our Spiders.

ANOTHER year has almost come to a close with the Myall Park Croquet Club holding

The best one of all was after all the bowls were played the Jack was resited to the T. Good result for those bowlers who might have played some not too good shots.

Prizes were given to winners and losers by drawing cards.

The winners were Francis Betar, Julie Kennedy and Kayelene Pearson. The “Lucky Losers” were Jeanette Emmett, Dorothy Thompson and Carol Hayden. Following play everyone enjoyed a fabulous lunch, catered by our wonderful Social Committee.

We are confident of a six year age group, along with, 10’s, 13’s, 15’s and 17’s. Other age groups are possible, depending on player interest. The Club will hold an expression of interest day at Jimmy’s Beach on Sunday December 17. Official training will commence on Feb 13th at Myall Park.

All intending 2018 players and parents are invited to the EOI event. A BBQ and roast pork lunch, along with refreshments from will be available from 11am.

The Hawks are back to square one after the departure of long term Coach, Brooke Roach. Brooke has moved on, and will coach a revamped Raymond Terrace “A” Grade side. With Roach at the helm for nine years, the Club must now move on.

Looking to strengths, a number of younger players that have not been considered over the past seasons, because of the Hawks position as an “A”

Grade Club, have indicated interest in returning to the paddock under Murphy’s guidance.

Losing a long term Coach and a majority of players will relegate the Club to a lower grade.

A revamped Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League Competition will see formation of 8 team competitions. Six pre season rounds will be played, which will include four mandatory trials for each team nominated. Clubs will be graded to play 14 rounds at the end of the trial period, without regrades.

The Lady Hawks will also appoint a new coach in 2018.

The player roster may also change, with new players urged to sign on.

The Club will focus on a combined effort with both teams, beginning with positive negotiations with the Tea Gardens Hotel-Motel to return as the Hawks Major Sponsors.

An expression of interest day will be held for both teams on Sunday Dec 17th at Jimmy’s Beach. All intending players and support persons, along with their families are invited. Refreshment and a BBQ lunch will be provided from 11am.

The day will be held in conjunction with the Junior Hawks sign on day. Make it a HAWKS 2018 back to basics day.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

Silver Medal at Oz Titles

KARUAH boxer, Daniel Evans is back home after winning a silver medal at the Australian Amateur Titles in Melbourne.

The 24 year old was extremely pleased with his performance as was his Mum and number one supporter Sonja Evans.

“His first opponent was Queensland’s 71kg State titleholder Lachlan O’Shae in a tough bout,” Sonja said.

“Daniel has never faced a southpaw previously and in an awkward fight tagged the Queenslander with righthand counters almost every time his opponent attacked.’’

With a little luck going his way Daniel drew a bye for Friday competition and landing straight into the Gold medal match on Saturday.

Fridays fights saw Jack Littlefield from Orange NSW win his way through to face the Karuah fighter in the final.

Ironically Daniel had faced Littlefield in the finals of the NSW Amateur Championship earlier this year.

Sonja said, “The final was a willing contest from both fighters and went down to the wire with Littlefield winning by a split points

decision.’’

Littlefield was also named fighter of the Tournament from the 150 competitors who took part in the National Titles and NSW also took out the whole tournament with the most medals won.

Daniel said “I would like to thank my trainer Daniel Gristwood, Karuah RSL Club, Karuah Landscaping Supplies, Ruu’s Fresh Bake, Sonja’s Split Enz his family and friends for their support.”

He added “I’m going to take some time out from training over the Christmas period and use the time to decide whether to continue my boxing career.”
