By Margie TIERNEY FOR a group that started with just four members in a makeshift hut, the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre has certainly come a long way over the past quarter of a century.

At its annual general meeting recently, special presentations were made to long term members.

Twenty-five year ‘Membership Badges’ were awarded to Mary Britton, Bev Farrell, Pat Pritchard and Sandra Street.

The four women were also made Honorary Members.

Elsa Jones, Dawn Lyall and Dianne Taylor, all received a 20-year badge.

Camera Shy Koala NO koalas had been seen for a significant amount of time by the community at Tahlee, Port Stephens, a historic tour site where environmental care and sustainability are promoted.

friendly environment at Tahlee, and as part of an undergraduate study, a researcher from Melbourne university spent a couple of weeks at Tahlee.

Numerous cameras were positioned around the extensive property in order to determine

if koalas were present.

Searches were made for scats and the footage was developed but there was no evidence of koalas.

There was a sense of disappointment as there are the right feeding trees on the property for koalas.

Two weeks later, the

Hunter Bird Observers Club spent a morning at Tahlee on a birdwatching tour (where more than 150 species of bird have been spotted on the property).

To their delight, they announced at morning tea that one of their group had seen a koala!

Staff member Stuart Fleming, coordinator of conservation care and research at Tahlee said,

“The birdwatching group was very excited about this unexpected observation especially considering the cameras hadn’t picked it up.”

The group fondly named it “Koala Bird”.

Tahlee is continuing to liaise with local conservation groups and is establishing more feeding trees with the hope that many more koalas will be seen in the future.

David Roy Smith, 34, collapsed during a

Guardianship laws provide the key mechanism for protecting the health and financial affairs of young people, adults with disabilities and the elderly by setting forward decision making principles for those who do not have the capacity to make decisions for themselves.

The New South Wales Guardianship Act (1987) is currently under review by the New South Wales Law Reform Commission.

The Law Reform Commission will enquire into: 1. How the current Guardianship Act (1987) interacts with other legislation.

2. Recent developments in law, policy and practice by the Commonwealth, other states and territories and overseas.

3. The report of the 2014 Australian Law Reform Commission Equality, Capacity and Disability in Commonwealth Laws.

4. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

5. The demographics of New South Wales and in particular the increasing aging population.

The Commission will consider the different models of decision making that should be in place for people who cannot make decisions for themselves by looking at the role of substitute and supported decision making models.

Furthermore, the Commission will enquire into whether the term ‘disability’ is the appropriate language for the Guardianship Act or whether ‘decision making capacity’ is more appropriate.

Guardianship laws impact the lives of many people and this review gives the Law Reform Commission the opportunity to respond to Australia’s aging population and to bring New South Wales guardianship laws in line with those of other countries and international standards.

The rollout of seat belts in school buses across the Myall Coast region is finally being realised, thanks to a NSW Government funding boost.

THE rollout of seat belts in school buses across the Myall Coast region is finally being realised, thanks to a NSW Government funding boost.

The $29 million allocated for the seat belt blitz will ensure all regional school buses will have seat belts by December 2019, four years ahead of schedule.

The funding announcement has been welcomed by Busways, who operate six dedicated school buses in the Myall Coast region.

A Busways spokesperson said as the fast tracking of the rollout is still in its early stages, it is unclear when the installation will occur for their fleet of school buses.

Busways, who ferry hundreds of Myall Coast children to school each week, said in addition to the seat belts, they are proactive in ensuring school bus safety through many active strategies.

“These include identifying black spots, improved infrastructure for bus transport, improving transport educational material and promoting

Ongoing training for drivers is also an important part of Busways safety strategy.

The funds allocated for the blitz were announced as part of the 2017/2018 state budget.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, said seat belts for the rural and regional bus fleet “is something our communities have been crying out for”.

“I’m committed to making sure kids across the state can travel to school safely,” he said.

Applications open for 2017-18 Hunter Land Management Grants Hunter Local Land Services is offering up to $1.7m in grants in the Upper Hunter, Lower Hunter and Manning Great Lakes districts.

The Land Management Grants Program supports landholders and land managers to: • Implement sustainable grazing and land management practices within commercial beef, dairy, sheep and poultry enterprises.

• Enhance the condition of riparian, estuarine and remnant native vegetation by managing stock impacts and reducing threats from invasive species.

Funding is from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme, Catchment Action NSW, Hunter Catchment Contributions and Hunter Water Corporation.

Eligibility criteria, priority areas and guidelines apply.

Applications close at midnight 28 August 2017.

Marine Drive Upgrade

THE Marine Drive foreshore in Tea Gardens is about to get some extra public facilities thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Federal Government.

Local Federal Member for the area, Dr David Gillespie, joined members of local community groups to mark the occasion last Thursday.

Among the group were Len Roberts, CEO of the local Aboriginal Land Council,

Gordon Grainger, Trevor Cook and Graham Halley from the Foreshore Reference Group, Dan Aldridge from MidCoast Council and Patricia Garrard from the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association.

The grant will go towards building a new covered seating shed on the foreshore near Hook N Cook fish and chip shop.

three bubblers with dog bowls as well, so the dogs can have a drink and there will be three push bike stands.”

The bike racks will be erected on the foreshore in front of Hook N Cook, the Tea Gardens Hotel, and near the Boatshed restaurant.

There were also a lot more suggestions being floated by the community groups, from solar powered fairy lights in the trees that line Marine Drive, to extending the bike track and installing more gas powered barbecues.

Orders have been placed for the bubblers, building materials and bike racks.

“Adrian Thompson, owner of the Ferry Service, has very kindly agreed to address members of our community on the operation of the service and will be taking questions from the audience,” Progress Association Secretary, Patricia Garrard said.

“Mr Thompson will be accompanied by his advisor, Malcolm Anderson and his manager, Tony Platt,” Patricia told News Of The Area.

“This should be an interesting evening and we are sure a number of people will be keen to hear from Adrian and take the opportunity to ask questions as well.”

Reliability and timetable schedules are a just a couple of concerns that are sure to be on the agenda.

Adrian Thompson’s Port Stephens Ferries is now the only service operating between Tea Gardens and Nelson Bay. “We are expecting this will attract a large number of people so we’ve booked the Hawks Nest Community Hall for the event,” Patricia said.

“We encourage you to attend and bring your friends.”

The meeting kicks off at 6pm, on Thursday 20 July in the Hawks Nest Community Hall on Booner Street.

Ms HJ, Boat Harbour Dear Ms HJ, I hear you loud and clear. Remember the good old days before we did everything online? The good old days when we worked in workplaces.

I yearn for those days, Ms HJ, because we were not controlled by some Internet-Cloud-Modem-NBN-Cablethingy that was prone to failure at random moments tied to deadlines.

I have this very same problem at my place.

I’m sure I’m on a most-wanted list with my ISP, due to the many thinly-veiled threats I make to go on a long-haul flight and track them down, with their lousy service and ‘please hold for a survey’ rubbish, even though I’ve been waiting for two hours for an as-yet unresolved issue.

My most recent Internet dilemma was nothing to do with my provider, apparently, but an ant nest in the fuse box.

These were not your run-of-the-mill ants.

No, they were suicide bombers, hell-bent on blowing up my fuse box by electrocuting themselves.

The answer for you is to go to a free Wi-Fi venue, but of course they close at hours not commensurate with late night writing.

You also have to get out of your pyjamas and maybe attend to some basic personal hygiene matters.

And you have to keep ordering food, which seriously diminishes your earnings, particularly when you go to a swanky café with ocean views.

I can only empathise and suggest that there are some great views to be had at Wi-Fi-friendly eateries in the Bay. You may not get much work done, but you may see a whale breach or a camel plod across the sand dunes, and your blood pressure should be temporarily lowered.

That is until a gang of grotty children decide to sit next to you and their table manners are so appalling that you end up with bits of their guacamole into your keyboard.

Try working under those conditions.

APPLICATIONS for funding through the 2017 Community Building Partnership (CBP) program are now open, and notfor-profit groups are encouraged to apply.

The grants are available annually with $300,000 up for grabs in each state electorate.

“Local sports clubs, charities and men’s sheds are just some of the groups that benefit from this program,” Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said.

“The grants can pay for much-needed improvements to local facilities that promote participation in the local community.”

More than 16 organisations in Bulahdelah received funding from the program last year.

Some of the varied projects include the development of Lion’s Park, construction of a jetty, picnic shelters and public toilets, as well as upgrades to the Main Street, Scout Hall and Memorial Hall.

Bulahdelah Preschool Director Mrs Gai Tooze, said

the centre was able to install softfall for the outdoor play area, construct an amphitheatre and upgrade bathrooms and play equipment from the funding grant they received last year.

“The additional funding allows us to provide a new and stimulating learning environment for the children,” she said.

The minimum funding request is $2,500, and although there is no upper limit, the CBP website says the average grant awarded is usually around $20,000.

Mr Bromhead said through the program, the NSW Government ensures funding is available to support organisations “that think first-and-foremost about the needs of locals”.

“We’ve seen the wonderful benefits of this program in the Myall Lakes with a huge amount of varied projects funded over the years,” he said.

Farmers Markets Thriving

IN anyone’s language, soonto-be mum of four, Melissa Lopez, is a very busy woman.

Late last year News Of The Area spoke to Melissa on the day of the first ever Farmers Market in Tea Gardens.

There were just a few stalls and the wind was howling off the Myall River.

What a difference six months has made.

At the recent Tea Gardens markets there were 14 stalls selling everything from organic meat, vegetables, honey and locally produced candles.

As Melissa’s family grow, so too are the Farmers Markets.

She’s now running markets in Bulahdelah once a month and every Sunday in Harrington.

Melissa has high hopes and high standards.

“We make sure that every farmer is genuine and what they’re producing is what we’re selling,” Melissa said.

“We take the time to go to the property, sometimes it’s a surprise visit and sometimes it’s not.”

“We want to be sure that what they’ve listed on their application to sell at the farmers markets, is what they’ve produced and they’re

not a re-seller,” Melissa said.

“The farmers have to tell us what they’re producing and how they’re doing it.”

“We’re helping the farmers, we’re helping the community and it’s our plan to keep on growing.”

To that end Melissa

recently gathered 500 signatures from the community calling for at least two markets in Tea Gardens every month.

“MidCoast Council knocked us back, saying it goes against policy,” she said.

Melissa intends to keep fighting and is hoping to have more twilight markets in the Summer.

Holiday Hotspot

By Daniel SAHYOUN IT may be the middle of winter, but the region continues to be a hotspot for tourism.

The pristine beaches are a major drawcard despite the chill in the air, with fishing and spectacular coastal walks proving to be popular activities.

But away from the coastline, there is an abundance of hidden gems waiting to be explored.

Magical rainforests, an old trestle bridge and Wootton’s railway walk are just a few of the many jewels on offer.

Bulahdelah Visitors Information Centre (VIC) Coordinator, Kevin Carter, said Alum Mountain is a popular walk for visitors.

“We are also central to the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest circuit taking in the Myall Lakes National Park,” he said.

“The Gloucester circuit and Stroud, from a historical building point of view, are also popular and Seal Rocks is another iconic area that we send tourists to.”

A wealth of information for travellers is available at the well-stocked centre, including walls of pamphlets devoted to attractions, accommodation and local events, in addition to the extensive knowledge of the volunteers.

“We are most commonly asked for maps and brochures,” Kevin said.

“As we are still a gateway to the north coast, we get people in and kit them out with maps up all the way to Byron Bay and Brisbane.”

But the Visitors Centre is much more than just a map and brochure dispensing service, with “a country fair arrangement” showcasing local craft and artwork, Aboriginal artefacts and local produce including jams

The Bulahdelah Visitors Information Centre is entirely self-funded. and honey.

The centre also sells beach and fishing permits, a range of souvenirs and offers a photocopying service.

Kevin said Bulahdelah’s well-presented main street and clean parks, along with

the majestic Myall River, give the town a “quaint country atmosphere” which is appealing to tourists.

“We were once a place where you only stopped enroute to somewhere else, but there are a lot more caravans

that now come and stay up to three days and spend money in the Bulahdelah economy,” he said.

The VIC is 100 percent self-funded and is staffed entirely by a band of volunteers.

“The best thing is the children we work with and the people we interact with along the way, everyone who is involved in schools make it

all worthwhile,” he said.

“I have enjoyed teaching students over a long period of time, particularly senior students, I think I have given them a lot of direction and steered them along their passions.”

When Mr Holt started teaching in 1981, his materials consisted of chalk, a blackboard and a pile of textbooks, with “discipline keeping things in line”.

He finished his career using data projectors, interactive smartboards and iPads, with “respectful working relationships” replacing the tough discipline model.

Sr Byrne said others who “equate religion as going to church” may have selected ‘No Religion’ simply because they do not attend services.

“Some people are religious but don’t understand they are, it is about relationships, rather than just organised religion,” she said.

Historical Census data shows around one percent of the Australian population

marked the ‘No Religion’ box in 1966.

Last year’s data revealed the number has now swelled to 29.6 percent, which is nearly double the 15.5 percent recorded in 2001.

Sr Byrne told News Of The Area, the Census figures show “the church has a lot of work to do”.

“I think the sexual abuse crisis has let people down badly, we present one front but then there are those who don’t practise what they preach,” she said.

“I think that’s part of why people have become disillusioned and don’t want to identify with those groups.”

Sr Byrne said, “Christian churches need to take a good look at people and see what their real needs are and how we can help.”

“We need to look outwards and not inwards,” she said.

Bulahdelah Central School teacher Wayne Holt has officially made the decision to retire, bringing an end to a teaching career spanning almost four decades.

Chalker, said she admired Mr Holt’s positivity and passion, but his gentle persistence inspired her the most.

“Mr Holt is an amazing teacher and always took an interest in what I wanted to do in the future,” she said.

“He continuously kept pushing me to do better than what I thought I could do, and I am definitely going to miss him.”

But it is not just the students who learned life lessons from the mathematician, who also acted as a mentor

to countless beginning teachers, helping them shape their own approach to teaching.

“There are a lot of good people coming in and becoming teachers, and we have seen numerous good examples here,” Mr Holt said.

“I feel that I can now retire knowing things will be left in good hands.”

Mr Holt said his shortterm plans include some renovation work to his home.

“After that, I will do some more travel starting with the Silk Road next year,” he said.

By John SAHYOUN LIKE most regions in Australia, the 2016 Census revealed a sharp rise in the number of Myall Coast residents with no religious affiliation.

Myall Coast Catholic Parish Pastoral Coordinator, Sister Libbey Byrne, said there are a broad range of reasons for the increase.

“Australia is a deeply spiritual place, you’ll hear people saying I’m spiritual but not religious,” she said.

“People sometimes equate religion with going to church and believing a certain set of doctrines, they don’t see that religion is about a relationship with God.” In Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, the number of people who ticked ‘No Religion’ jumped from 14.7 percent in 2011 to 22.2 percent last year.

New Leaders Shine The new student leadership team at Bulahdelah Central School were officially inducted into their positions at a formal assembly held at the end of the last school term.

THE new student leadership team at Bulahdelah Central School was officially inducted into its position with team members attending a formal assembly held at the end of the last school term.

Incoming Captains Luke Rochester and Maddison Boyd, along with ViceCaptains Zac Fletcher and Katie Nolan, proudly took their pledges and received their badges in front of their parents, guests and school community.

Luke said he was “very ecstatic” when the captains were announced, as he “didn’t expect to get it”.

“It is a big responsibility

and I am looking forward to working with the staff and student body,” he said.

“I aim to be a good role model, and represent the school to the best of my ability.”

As part of their duties, the new leaders will chair weekly assemblies, lead the Student Representative Council, host school functions, and represent the school in the wider community.

Girls Vice-Captain Katie Nolan, said she is looking forward to the challenges the position will bring.

“I nominated for Captain because I have always wanted to give back to the school and help others,” she said.

“I am very honoured to

Crack at Immortality Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club Trevor DAVIES

IF you have read my articles before, you will understand the immortality that can be achieved by winning a Club Championship and having your name engraved forever up on a club honour board.

That type of immortality was on offer last weekend as Max Rosser and Dave Benson battled out the Karuah Minor Singles Trophy.

This particular game had the potential to do this as Dave had played in five previous singles finals with no victories and Max had never reached a final and was keen to capitalise on his success this year.

Pundits and experts were excited at the prospect and a good crowd gathered to witness the game.

Both players were at their best and the large gallery watched on as they received much applause for

their magnificent bowling.

The game was officiated by the club Vice President (a bowling tradition - the President officiates the Major Singles).

VP Peter Joass did so, very well, providing a textbook example of how those duties should be performed.

The Minor Singles is somewhat unique in Club Championships as it has a very wide range of entrants from relatively new to very experienced bowlers.

BOWLING Its main claim to uniqueness though is that unlike other Championships, winning it excludes the victor from ever playing in a Minor Singles Championship, at ours or any other club, ever again.

The winner is branded as a Major Player forever, and along with their immortality gained on the honour board, can afterwards only play in Major competitions.

So, Saturday last, following a fierce battle that

ebbed and flowed between Max’s kinetic style of bowling and Dave’s consistent draw bowling style there could only be one winner.

At the end of the very exciting tussle, Dave Benson ended up on top, though both players were cheered from the green by the thoroughly entertained gallery.

Dave takes the Minor Singles crown for 2017 and forevermore gets regarded as a Major Player in the club and can never again compete

in the Minors Championship.

By The JAFFA 5 July The weather smiled upon us today and a field of 43 enjoyed a great day of bowls.

Two top Triples teams contested first place with the team of Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair just edging out the “three leads” side of John Younghusband, Ross Barry and Peter Gurney who filled second spot.

7 July Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs was played today under a sunny sky.

Twenty players participated.

The Club welcomed Rian Lane, a visitor from Tasmania.

The winners with the lowest margin won the money.

They were John Slater and Dave Perry.

Ray Prigg and Henk Faber won by too many had to contend with second.

Five winning margins were in contention for the jackpot.

It was not won.

8 July A semi-final of the Club Triples Championship was played today with the other game being deferred to next Saturday due to Zone commitments by some players.

The two teams competing for a place in the finals were Ron Green, Steve Jones and Jeff Baker and Ross Barry, Ken Devlin and Keith Smith.

At the halfway mark there was nothing between the two sides but from the 12th end Keith’s team gradually drew away to hold a 5 shot lead with two ends to play.

9 July At a Special Meeting of the Bowling Club today, vacant positions on the Club’s Management Committee were finalised.

The Management Committee is now to be headed by Kerry O’Brien with Max Stephens and David Garcia acting as Vice Presidents.

John Slater will continue on as Secretary and Publicity Officer and the all-important Treasurer’s position will be filled by the well credentialed, Ron Drake.

Col Amos comes in as Games Secretary, ably supported by Ross Barry.

The remainder of the Committee will comprise; Frank Dunn, Noel Jackson, Brian Emmett and Stewart Sturrock.

There is some new blood on the Selection Panel this year, headed by Max Stephens.

Assisting Max will be Greg Pearson, Peter Gurney, Mark Hair and Brian Emmett.

In Sunday Mixed Bowls today 26 players turned out

on a beautiful winter’s day.

A welcome was extended to new bowlers Don Robby and Trish Jones, visitors from Sunshine Coast who are house sitting in town, Lorraine Coleman and Paul and Rhonda Hadfield.

Winners of the day with highest margin were Paul Hadfield, Peter King and Dot Monty Lucky Losers were Don Robby, Col Saillaird and Noel Jackson.

The organisers wished to thank Barry Goode and Ron Webster for doing the cooking and to Frank Dunn for helping the newer bowlers.

Muddies fought hard against ladder leaders Myall Coast Mudcrabs

THE Myall Coast Mudcrabs played the premiership front runners – the Forster Dolphins – to complete Round 12 of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby Union

Competition at Myall Park last Saturday.

In the first twenty minutes the Muddies showed strength and determination in tackling and defence but unfortunately were unable to get over the line against the strong all-round

premiership contender.

The Dolphins played their strong back line which resulted in a number of decisive runs by their outside backs.

Half time was an opportunity for the Muddies to “catch their breath” and

regroup however the second half became a procession of Dolphin tries.

Best players in the forwards were the Johns brothers, Nick and Kayden, together with the family patriarch David followed by Jack Hyde and Will Finau.

In the backs, the strongest contributors were Nathan Colver, Chris Sando, Jackson Page and Danny Lawrence who travels each week from Sydney – a great club man, thanks Danny.

Kerry Faber and Lorraine Harvey had a convincing win over Karen Green and Kayelene Pearson 20 v 8.

Bette Saillard played “swinger” lead for both teams on Rink 2.

Bette obviously was a winner, for the team comprising of Bev Rhodes and Elizabeth Kelly with a score of 22, defeating Sheril Johnson and Carol Hayden 12.

Francis Betar, Bev Stephens and Loretta Baker held a strong lead in their match against Ingrid Luck, Olive McKeown and Lynne Green, Loretta’s team winning by 19 shots.

A much closer contest on Rink 4 between Lily Smith, Deyonne Page and Dale Winter 17 v Jill McBride, Robyn Webster and Karen McPhie 13.

The win was granted for a win plus ends and then margins as two teams tied.

The winners were Francis Betar, Bev Stephens and Loretta Baker.

Thursday 6 July: Versatility Day, first a massive thank you to Pelican Pest Control for sponsoring this annual event, your generosity to the Women’s Bowling Club is very much appreciated.
