TAKE a snapshot of Australia and that about sums up last Saturday’s annual Market Day in north Pindimar.

There was something for all tastes and ages, with market stalls, car boot sales and a chocolate wheel.

The Red Cross stall was manned by volunteers and Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest President Jennifer Wenham.

“People make things and bring things in throughout the year, my house is like a warehouse,” Ms Wenham told News Of The Area.

Innovation award for future water plan MIDCOAST Water’s 30 year plan for providing sustainable water services to our community has been honoured with an industry award for innovation.

The ‘Our Water Our Future’ strategic plan, developed in consultation with the community, was honoured with a highly commended award in the Innovation in water supply and wastewater category at the annual Engineering Excellence Awards, run by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA).

THE Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, spent much of last weekend in Tea Gardens getting some first hand knowledge of the issues in his electorate.

His visit began with a dinner at the Tea Gardens Hotel where he spoke on numerous subjects including his new appointment as Assistant Minister for Rural Health.

“I’d like to see easy access to good general practice, physios, dentists and allied health professionals, that’s what I can change in my portfolio,” he told News Of The Area.

“The things that I do in the health portfolio can affect thousands, millions of people.”

The young mothers, with seven children between them, share a passion for succulents.

“I didn’t realise how many succulents there were, there are thousands,” said Ms Simmons.

Most importantly, she laughingly added, “I can keep them alive.”

And for kids, big and small and the young at heart, what market would be complete without a thong throwing competition.

Jenny Little from Bundabah runs the hotly-contested competition.

“It started for the little ones, to give mum and dad a chance to enjoy the rest of the markets, but now it’s grown for all age groups,” said Ms Little.

Join forces

THE Myall River Festival provided the impetus for the Rotary Club of Myall Coast and Scouts Australia to promote the proposed reestablishment of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Scout Troop.

Rotary’s offer to Scouts Australia to join them at the Rotary stall was heartening with around 70 expressions of interest from eligible children and one offer to join as a Troop Leader received.

Renovations at the Scout Hall in Hawks Nest are going ahead with a number of local tradesmen giving their time

and advice free of charge.

Generous assistance has also been received from Pelican Pest Control and The Mens’ Shed.

To raise additional renovation funds, Rotary ran a guessing competition at the Festival stall. Every bit helps, but more funds are needed to complete the work.

“The benefits that will flow to our local community by reforming the Troop will be substantial,” Mr Ian Mackenzie-Smith from the Rotary Club of Myall Coast said.

Any parents who were involved in “Scouts” growing up will attest to the value of providing healthy outdoor activities under experienced and trustworthy leaders.

“Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens have an extremely active Surf Lifesaving Nippers group that demonstrates the enthusiasm of young local children to get involved,” Mr Mackenzie-Smith said.

REMEMBRANCE Day Commemoration Services will be held in Tea Gardens, Karuah and Bulahdelah on Friday 11 November.

During the ceremonies, one minute’s silence will be observed at 11am to remember Australia’s servicemen and women who gave their lives in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

Whitney Thomson said she will not only be honouring her great, great grandfather James O’Keefe who served in World War I, but also those involved in all past and present conflicts.

“Remembrance Day means recognising all the people who fought in the First World War like my Pop,” she said.

“But it also means that we

remember those who are still fighting so that we can have our freedom and be free.”

At 11am on the 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.

During this first modern world conflict, 60,000 Australian soldiers died and 156,000 were wounded or taken prisoner.

Bulahdelah RSL SubBranch member John Renfrew told News Of The Area we need to remember all those who have died or suffered in conflict.

“Remembrance Day is important for remembering those who served in the Great War for our freedom, and to commemorate those who served in conflict in the past and who continue to serve in the present,” he said.

“It is important that we

remember them so their sacrifices are not forgotten.”

Remembrance Day 2016 marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Bulahdelah Tennis Club Holds Pink Ladies Day THE Bulahdelah Tennis Club held their Pink Ladies Day on Saturday, 5 November and enjoyed a game of tennis and pink-themed food.

The day was hot and windy, but Meredyth Rae, the President of the Bulahdelah Tennis Club, was happy with the range of attendees including tennis club members, people connected to the Tennis Club, locals from Markwell and visitors from Old Bar. This is the second year that the Bulahdelah Tennis

Club has run the event.

Meredyth Rae contacted the Breast Cancer Network Australia and registered the ‘Pink Day’. She received brochures and posters and ‘Pink Ladies’ cut outs to symbolise the day.

There were lots of donated pink food and drink items that were then sold to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

Great Festival for Koala Group OPINION

Dear News of the Area, A GREAT Festival for the Koala Group!

The crowd in the morning particularly, was fantastic. We had lots of good discussions about koalas and koala food trees and plants in general.

Virtually everyone who took a Parramattensis koala food tree or a native plant made a donation or bought raffle tickets, or BOTH. We would like to thank them all for their help in saving our local endangered koala

population.

By the end of the day we had given away everything. That’s right, there was nothing left!

This was just what we had hoped for.

The total for the five cent coin donation drive was $569.25. The winner of a $50 voucher to spend at the Australian Koala Foundation online shop was Helen Lindsay who guessed $566.60. Our thanks go to the Holiday Coast Credit Union who kindly allowed us to place our donation jar in their office in Tea Gardens.

Guests received a promotional information package including a brochure pointing out ways to help a friend or colleague with breast cancer.

Tips given included emotional help such as ‘Don’t be afraid that you won’t know what to say. Just be yourself ’ and practical suggestions including ‘Prepare nutritious home-

cooked meals that can be frozen.’

The Bulahdelah Tennis Club plays tennis all year round and holds two main competitions in the autumn and spring.

The Tennis Club members were all very enthusiastic about participating in the day, wearing pink and raising money for a worthy cause.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

By Karen McPHIE ON Tuesday 3 November, Open Consistency Competition began on a fine day with wonderful competition.

Consistency is a game in which two people compete with four bowls each.

Scoring is based on the four bowls which are closest to the jack. The shot is a score of four, with the fourth closest scoring one point.

The aim is to score 150 points.

Experience in games and competition played a major role in determining the winners of each game.

Dale played Pam Gilchrist in a fine game and is through to the 2nd round with a score of 150 to 100.

Vicki Rankin also won through to the next round with a score of 150 to 110 and Sandra Leismann won her game 152 to 128.

The round of consistency on the day went to Carol Hayden and Wendy Brand. Carol attained a good lead over Wendy early in the game however Wendy gradually worked her way back into the game with an even score of 75 each on the 15th end. Over

the next number of rounds, they evened the scores with 90 each on the 18th end, 100 each on the 20th end, 120 each on the 24th end, 130 each on the 26th end and 140 each on the 28th end.

What a game.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the competition and Wendy finally took out the game with a winning score of 151 to 149. Congratulations to Carol and Wendy with a thrilling game.

We welcomed Barbara Hilliard who played as a visitor on the day and enjoyed herself with our club. She will return to play with us again in a couple of weeks.

The social games played on the day included two games of three bowl pairs and two games of triples over 18 ends. The winners were decided with scoring of shots plus ends.

There was a tie between Barbara Hilliard and Liz Kelly’s teams scoring 26.

The game with Jean Glover, Dorothy Thompson and Lorraine Harvey also had the same number of points.

Merle Sergeant was then left with the only way to decide the winner of the day. Merle drew the winning card. Congratulations to Jean, Dorothy and Lorraine.

A fantastic day for bowls.

Myall Masters in the Swim MYALL Masters Swimming Club’s President, Chris Lock, delivered a Timekeepers course to eager participants at the Tea Gardens Pool.

The course covered the technical and practical skills necessary to be a qualified Timekeeper.

All participants achieved competency and are now able to undertake further studies to be classified as a Chief Timekeeper, Marshall, Inspector of Turns, Judge of Strokes and Starter.

It is necessary for graduates to gain practical experience at three Masters swimming events.

By Colin McCARTHY RESULTS ROUND 29/10/2016 Juniors Kookaburras VS East Maitland @ Karuah. The sharks batted first scoring 1/54 runs off their 16 overs with James McCarthy scoring 23. They then fielded with passion and restricted the visiting East Maitland team to 8/8 off their 16 overs.

By John SLATER Results 2 November High scoring was again the feature of the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition played today.

The team of Ian Baker, Ron Green and Mark Hair led the way with a great score of +46 points.

They just beat the second place team of Tom Short, Graham Kelly and Dennis Ashbridge who returned +45 points.

The consolation Luck Draw prize went to Ken McKeown, Barry Drayton, Ron Webster.

4 November A good field of 16 players contested the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today with Henk Faber and Tony Attard winning the day with +17 from Gary Wynne and Greg Pearson who finished with +15.

It was great to see Tony back at bowls after a long

absence.

The Jackpot was not won and the “pot” is now well worth winning.

5 November The field for the annual Club Mixed Fours competition was disappointing with only four teams entered but full marks to the Match Committee for not cancelling this event and a big wrap to the 16 players who entered.

The first round became the semi-final and was played in atrocious conditions with a strong south-easterly wind making play very difficult.

Despite the wind, the standard of play from all teams was very high with most players choosing to play the wide-side as their best option.

The draw saw the team of Kerry and Henk Faber, Lynne Green and Leigh Hunt play Karen and Ron Green, and Ian and Pat Baker.

This game was close at the half-way point with Ron Green’s team holding a two shot lead 9-7.

Despite the weather, 18 players had a great time with the winners determined by the lowest winning margin.

The winners fitting that formula were Col Saillard, Ray Gilchrist and David Williams.

A big welcome to Colin Saillard who is joining our for the weekend was Gail Bartlett who caught some tailor and an Australian salmon.The ladies runner-up angler was Marion Smith who caught bream and flathead.

The mystery fish of a snapper was won by Robert Bartlett.

The junior winner was Poppy Rapley. The runner up was Saxon Rapley, both caught great bream and tailor.

The wind did not let up during the final of the Club Mixed Fours competition with the Ron Webster team taking on the Ron Green side over 21 ends.

The high standard from Saturday continued with nothing between the two teams at the 15th end when the score was at 14-14.

It all unravelled for the Ron Green side from there where in the next four ends they conceded 10 shots. The Ron Webster team winning 25-15.

Congratulations to the winning side – Sandra Leisemann, Robyn Webster, Merv Mills and Ron Webster.

GREAT to see one of our newest members Di Ayers along with Pat Marr take out Handicap honours for Friday 4 November – well done.

Monday 24 October (Howell) 1 Gordon Morrison & Rex Stoessiger 2 Chez Rands & Leslie Falla 3 Linda & Glenn Gardens. The sharks won the toss batting first, was this a good choice at 5/20. It didn’t look it after 10 overs. But a charge led by Sam Larking, 105, his maiden cricket century, saw the sharks claw back being 8/166 off their 35 overs. The bowlers came out firing and were never going to let the Vacy team into the game dismissing them for 43 runs in the 15th over.

Mark Bills 4/5 off 4 overs and Mark Herbert 3/18 off 4 overs punished the Vacy team early to secure a sharks victory.

Twelve-year-old Luke McCarthy made his debut bowling in seniors taking 2/12 off 4 overs and a nice catch in the point region.

The “Jack Grace Memorial Rookie of the Year” was CJ Misifosa.

Secretary Neil Reynolds thanked the players and staff for their efforts throughout the year. Special mention was given to the Club’s sponsors, who have enabled the Hawks to maintain a strong presence in the competition.

Praises for Brooke Roach’s efforts were forwarded. Roach’s efforts are paramount to the Hawks success in “A” Grade.

Brooke Roach has committed to the 2017 campaign as coach, and

will maintain a strong presence on the paddock.

He particularly thanked the players from the Mallabula club who played the year for the Hawks. As players in the club well know, it is a task to turn out for another team while your Club is not functioning.

Players will take a well-earned rest over the Christmas holidays and return to official training after the January long weekend.

In Club news, a full committee was elected at the annual general meeting, with last year’s executive reelected.

Rob Smith will lead a

strong team, with several appointments made to individual roles.

The Supporters Club Christmas party will be held in December.

A proposal to enter a second side from the area has gained some momentum.

Over the last number of years, many players have dropped away, when not able to get consistent game time in the “A” Grade side.

While the side would have to play separate to the Hawks, it is aimed at maintain a strong League side in the area.

JOHN Schultz and Billy Greentree stood out at the Tea Gardens Hawks 2016 presentation night held last week.

John Schultz was awarded the Hawks supporters trophy ahead of Nathan Ruse and Ben Mossop. He was the ‘player’s player’ choice narrowly from Nick Clarke and Ben Mossop.

His points culminated three ahead of Billy Greentree, then Jack Beverley and Trent Murphy to take the 2016 Graham Haywood Memorial Player of the Year trophy.

Schultz was also one point behind the winner of the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League’s “A” Grade Player of

the Year award.

The Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League’s “A” Grade Player of the Year award was won by Billy Greentree.

Greentree was also the highest points scorer in “A” Grade in 2016. In the Hawks awards he was the Referee’s Best and Fairest, ahead of John Schultz and Leigh Kelly.

He was also voted the Best in Attack. CJ Misifosa and John Schultz were runners up.

In other awards, Nathan Ruse was the Best in defense, from Trent Murphy and Jack Beverley. Ruse was also awarded the Most Consistent.

Jack Beverley was the Coach’s choice, while Ben Mossop was the President’s vote.
