A new community Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Kel Boak was introduced to the Group, who will work alongside Senior Constable Alison Stewart

in supporting the Medowie Neighbourhood Watch in providing information, support, crime statistics and assistance where needed as the Group looks forward to working together for a safer community.

Saturday 24 February will see the Centre in Cardiff celebrate with an open gym fundraising event for their most special member, Ruben.

Port Performers Star in Little Women TICKETS TO BE WON!

By Marian SAMPSON THE classic story of Little Women is coming to the Young Peoples Theatre (YPT) in Newcastle as a Musical, which will feature three Port Stephens performers.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March.

Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

This production of Little Women has two casts, May

and Alcott.

Director Aaron Taylor has been part of previous productions of this show, told News Of The Area, “This show comes to mean more to me each time I am involved with a production.

“To have so many people involved with this production which were part of the team last time, I directed the show has emphasized the vitality of memory and that it is upheld, while at the

same time embracing the freshness offered by the young talent that has lifted the show to a new level and has uncovered layers that I hadn’t ever before considered,” he said.

Recycle those old X-Rays Safety Awards Finalist discovery, doctors were using basic X-ray machines to look at broken bones in hospitals and on battlefields.

Today X-ray machines are also used in airports to inspect passengers and their luggage for dangerous items, and to examine machinery for flaws.

X-rays are not the only medical images that have silver, with MRIs, CTs and mammograms also containing the valuable precious metal.

Modern X-ray machines, especially those used by dentists, can transfer images to computers rather than film.

These modern machines do not give off as much

MOST homes have a pile of awkwardly sized envelopes stashed somewhere, housing old X-rays from injuries and tests over the years.

However, it is not a widely known fact that you can recycle your old X-rays and declutter them from your home.

A customer service representative from Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council has drop off and collection points for old X-rays at our Council building in Raymond Terrace, and at the Salamander Waste Recycle Centre.”

“We encourage residents to utilise this option to dispose of their X-rays that are no longer needed.”

It is that simple and easy to make sure these items don’t get sent to landfill.

Every X-ray is coated with a substance that contains silver, so once you are done with your X-rays, that silver is fully recoverable and valuable to recyclers who extract the silver from the films.

X-rays were first discovered by a German physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

Within months of his

radiation, meaning they are safer for patients, and make it is quicker and easier for technicians to receive the images.

This new technology should decrease the stacks of old X-rays sitting around medical offices and homes in the future.

For those with a stack building up before these machines, it is important that they are recycled in a responsible manner.

Please take your old X-rays to the Council building in Raymond Terrace, or the Salamander Waste Recycle Centre and dispose of them in the best way possible.

PORT Stephens Council has been named a finalist in the 2018 Hunter Safety Awards for its leading workplace mental health program, which aims to reduce stigma and provide better support for workers who are experiencing mental health issues.

The awards recognise companies and individuals in the Hunter region who are demonstrating bestpractice and innovative approaches in workplace health and safety.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s an honour to have Port Stephens Council’s strong commitment to mental health acknowledged.

“We want to send our workers home in the same or better condition than how they came to work – and that goes for mental health just as much as physical health,” Ms Le Grange said.

“We saw an opportunity to improve

how mental health is identified, approached, managed and followed up in the workplace.

“Along with a new procedure, we rolled out mental health awareness training for our entire workforce, including comprehensive training for managers.

“We also introduced Mental Health Contact Officers, trained volunteers who are there to listen and direct people to where they can seek professional advice,” she added.

Ms Le Grange says the program had immediate benefits for the entire workforce.

“What we really wanted was to get people talking and to reduce the stigma that so often comes with mental health, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that.

“But the job isn’t over – we’ll continually work to ensure that Council provides a platform for consistent and high quality management of mental health in our workplace,” she said.

The third local member of the Little Women cast is Harold Phipps of Salt Ash who has completed a Diploma of Musical Theatre.

Harold has been in shows such as Macbeth (2014, YPT) in which he was nominated for a CONDA, Equus (2015, Stooged Theatre) and The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee (2016, YPT) and The History Boys (2016, YPT), Crucible (2017, YPT), You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (2017, YPT) and Les Miserables (2017, Metropolitan Players).

Harold’s involvement in YPT started as a student and he and now tutoring classes there, passing on his knowledge and passion for theatre to others.

Performances are being held until 24 February on Saturdays and Sundays with selected Friday performances also being offered.

I encountered this joyful experience last week when I used the facility for the first time. It was important for me to load the entire family in the car and reminisce about the good old days when we crushed cans and received pocket money for them. I spoke fondly about raiding garbage bins and designing can crushers with my friends. The backseat crew seemed unimpressed.

When we rounded the first corner of our journey, the recycling tubs in the boot tipped over, and the combined stench of stale beer, chardonnay and ginger ale filled the car.

Still, I persevered, arriving at the car park, only to realise, in the 35-degree heat, that there were no parks. I ended up on the other side of the centre, and we walked with our bins of trash to the recycling facility.

There we met a lovely man who said, “The bloody thing is full again. You’ll have to come back later, love.”

We carried our cans back to the car and did some shopping (not too much, as there was no space in the boot to put it).

When we were leaving, there was a new crowd of people and the conveyor belts were operational again (only two of them, the others had malfunctioned).

We found another park and stood in the queue, only realising at that point that there were separate machines for glass and plastics (of course ours were jumbled together). Wine bottles were also prohibited (that cut our recyclables in half).

Finally, after another 20 minutes, we had our time in the sun. First the cans and then the plastic bottles (but not the ones we had crushed – the conveyor belt didn’t accept them).

With about 20 cans to go, the machine inexplicably rejected us. I told the kids to get a refund from Woolies, as my desire to donate was overruled. The kids returned with a handful of coins. They looked dejected. They wanted Maccas. We bought two drinks (they wanted ice-cream, but the machine was broken). We received them in non-recyclable containers. I started singing ‘isn’t it ironic’ and the excursion was over.

Off to high school

THE first day of Year 7, just as it was for the first day of Kindergarten all those years ago, brings with it a lot of nerves and trepidation.

And that’s just the parents.

For students heading into high school for the first time, the feeling is a mixture of being scared and excited at the same time.

For many, they are heading into a much larger school than they are used to.

Then there is the structure of the school day, getting from classroom to classroom when the bell rings instead of staying in the one place all day.

Socially there are huge changes as well with many students having to make new friends who have come from other schools.

It’s a lot for a young mind to deal with, but is so often the case, the children find a way to not only deal with all of the change, they embrace it.

“To the families of our new Year 7 students, please don’t worry,” Lue Fagan, Irrawang

High School’s Community Liaison Officer, told News Of The Area.

“Your children have settled in well, they’re happy and they have enjoyed their first classes.”

“Many have already made friends from other schools, which is great to see, so things are moving ahead very well.”

The 2018 intake has been the biggest for Irrawang High School for many years, therefore the new school year is a challenge for more than just the Year 7 students.

Luckily, there was help on hand.

“We need to send a big thank you to Year 10 students Nicola, Delaya, Zahli and Kasey who happily came to school a day early to help guide and assist the Year 7 students,” said Lue Fagan.

“The school would also like to send an even bigger thank you to all of the parents for the obvious preparation they have done to help their children make the transition to high school.”

Robbie has been belting out the hits for more than 20 years, either as a solo act, or fronting rockabilly band ‘The Rattlesnakes’, rock n roll band ‘Robbie and the Rockers’

or blues band ‘The Blues Rattlers’.

Fish Catch up Prawn Catch is Down

WHILE the escape of some 20,000 kingfish from a commercial farm has been a bonanza for professional and recreational fishers alike, it’s a different story when it comes to prawns.

Friction of barnacles during recent monster swells could very well have been the cause of net failure at the trial farm some 7km off the Port.

The good news is that a

few thousand of the fish have been reclaimed.

Apparently, they hung around the site and wanted to get back inside to be fed!

Wild kingfish stocks have soared since the very effective commercial traps have been banned.

These traps used to be suspended beneath the surface and were covered with shadecloth which attracted the fish.

Currently, the fish are swarming around the reefs and headlands and are being caught by spearfishers, professionals and amateurs in record numbers.

Ms Washington requested a tour of the centre, after hearing of the developments the centre has undergone, and the links they are creating within the community in Medowie.

The Medowie Sports and Business Centre is branching out into the community, offering a variety of facilities and services not seen before in Medowie.

There are more exciting developments coming soon, with the upcoming commencement and of the swimming pools to be added to the Centre.

Ms Washington addressed Parliament with her thoughts on the centre, stating, “I was bowled over recently when I

visited the Medowie Sports and Business Centre.”

“This former squash court and indoor sports centre has been reinvented and is now home to multiple small businesses, ranging from physiotherapists to a cafe to a gym, complete with a creche,” she said.

The Centre also includes meeting rooms and conference facilities for outside groups, as well as squash courts and other sporting facilities.

Ms Washington in Parliament congratulated owner Colin Carter, Centre Manager Steve Bentley and marketing manager Kylie Smiley on bringing this project to fruition.

“This winning team has developed an outstanding mixed-use space,” Ms Washington said.

Herbicide Spraying in Open Drains and Retention Ponds MidCoast Council will be carrying out herbicide spraying during the months of February through to end April 2018 in various open drains and retention ponds within the entire Local Government area, to target grasses, reeds, annual and perennial weeds.

As a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments.

Only qualified operators will be under taking works. Herbicide Weedmaster Duo (360g/L biactive glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable. This program is subject to weather conditions.

THE new school year has begun once again and that means that registration days for many winter sports are just around the corner.

So whether your child is aspiring to be the next Dustin Martin, Tim Cahill, Sharni Layton or Michael Hooper, there is a sporting club out there waiting for them.

This year, the battle for many families to find the required funds to simply register their child to play organised sport is an easier one.

The New South Wales government has finally come to the party and realised that the cost of registering and insuring children to play organised sport can be an expensive exercise.

So, for the next four years, the government has introduced the ‘Active Kids’

In essence, the state government will provide a $100 voucher to parents/ guardians of school enrolled children that can be used to help pay for registration or membership fees for structured activities of at least eight weeks’ in duration.

Every child aged between 4.5 and 18 that is enrolled in school, home school or TAFE is eligible for their own $100 voucher.

The ‘Active Kids’ vouchers are only redeemable through approved sport, fitness and physical activity providers, so make sure your provider is registered and that the use of your voucher is valid before signing up.
