Dawn Strike Draws Crowds

FRIDAY morning saw the flying in of F/A-18 Classic Hornets into the Williamtown RAAF Base.

Returning from the Northern Territory-based Exercise Diamond Storm, the jets conducted a ‘Dawn Strike’ on the RAAF base and provided quite the show for locals keen to do a bit of jetwatching.

For locals brave enough to face the frosty morning, a delight of the senses was to be had with RAAF Fighter Jets manoeuvers.

For locals who prefer the warmth of their beds or a leisurely coffee in the morning, the sound of the jets served as an alarm clock for the day, with the roar of the engines hitting areas in and around Medowie just after 7am.

LOOK out Tilligerry Trekkers, a new group of walkers has rocked into town and they mean business.

Port Stephens Walkers turned up in town recently for a day’s rambling around the boardwalks and nature trails.

News Of The Area caught up with them at the beginning of their trek and their day’s outing was truly full on.

Striding out from Koala Reserve Lemon Tree Passage, they headed down the boardwalk and skirted the foreshore as far as the caravan park.

From here it was on to the lookout at the top of the hill near the main road.

They then pressed on to Mallabula, through the ‘Habitat’ and along Tanilba’s waterfront.

It was then back along the

foreshore to Caswell Reserve Mallabula for lunch.

To complete their grand tour they followed the rim of the bay back to Lemon Tree and their waiting bus.

When you consider that some of the ladies were in their late seventies, this feat was somewhat Herculean.

The group functions under the umbrella of Sport and Recreation and individual members plan outings.

In this case, former resident Lucy Sorenson organised the day.

“We hire a mini bus and have ventured as far afield as Cape Hawke (Forster) and Mangrove Mountain,” she said.

“It’s lovely to be back and we will be on the lookout for koalas and the native orchids which bloom at this time of year, she added.”

“We are all retired and work on the principle of: ‘If

you don’t use it you lose it!’” she said.

Changes are set to improve safety for drivers along Lemon Tree Passage Road

While Port Stephens Council does not set the speed limits, it aims to ensure drivers are given plenty of notice ahead of the changes as part of its role in the promotion of road safety.

Council’s Road Safety and Traffic Officer, Lisa Lovegrove, said this stretch of road has seen many recent speed-related crashes.

“Speed is directly related to over 20 per cent of casualty crashes in Port Stephens,” she said.

“The crashes along Lemon Tree Passage Road have resulted in 58 casualties and one fatality over the past

Tilligerry drivers to wipe off 10km/hr

CHANGES to the signposted speed limits along Lemon Tree Passage Road are set to improve safety for drivers of the Tilligerry Peninsula.

The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) are responsible for determining the speed limits for all roads across NSW and have indicated they will decrease speed limits along Lemon Tree Passage Road by 10km/hr by the end of July.

Each of the speed zones along Lemon Tree Passage Road, from the intersection of Nelson Bay Road to the 50 km/hr zone at Lemon Tree Passage, will drop by

Peter Kafer is a councillor with Port Stephens Council, with lots of extra talents.

He moved to Port Stephens 16 years ago, and lived in Stockton before then.

He has served as a councillor for nine years, and has announced his intention to run as mayor and councillor in the upcoming September local elections.

If Peter Kafer is successful in his bid for mayor, he will become the first Aboriginal mayor in New South Wales.

Peter began painting

decades ago, as a stress therapy, but quickly found that he loved immersing himself in his thoughts and creating important cultural pieces.

He paints in most mediums: oil, acrylics, water colours, but does prefer acrylics.

Cr Kafer told News Of The Area, “The biggest influence on me was a great artist, my late Auntie Gloria.”

“My works are based on stories that have been told by Elders and also from recollections from dreams.”

“I am a very spiritual person and in tune with my environment, so I like to reflect that in my paintings,” he said.

RMS will be installing electronic signage to advise road users of the changed conditions and these signs will be in place for approximately two weeks.

Williamtown Area Events TALISMAN SABER 2017 Exercise TALISMAN SABER 2017 (TS17) is a biennial combined Australian and United States (US) training activity, designed to train our respective military forces in planning and conducting Combined Task Force operations to improve the combat readiness and interoperability between our respective forces. TS17 is scheduled to take place from late June through to late July 2017.

The majority of TS17 field training exercise activities will take place in Shoalwater Bay Training Area, near Rockhampton in Central Queensland. Dear Ms JP, You know, had you said you worked in IT, I would have found the method more acceptable.

I think the form of communication should suit the employment position.

If, for example, you worked as an employee of Facebook, your boss should have sent you a ‘memory’ link that showed snippets of your working life over the past year and the number of times you liked your 364 imaginary workmates for ridiculous things.

This would be followed by the inevitable sinking feeling when you realised that you’d been de-friended by your boss and even the lady who replaced the toner cartridges, and then you could have just clicked on the angry emoji face and typed FML and all would be forgotten.

If you had worked as the director of the FBI, your boss should have sent you a form letter with “I wish you well in your future employment endeavours” similar to the one James Comey received, because that’s all you deserve when you hold one of the highest positions in the world.

But given that you’re a landscape gardener, a simple message made out of two-tone besser blocks or some cow manure calligraphy across a strip of fresh Sir Walter saying “we’ve outgrown you” may have been more suitable.

Abundance Road repairs reply Dear News Of The Area, IN the 29 June 2017 edition of “Medowie & Tilligerry News Of The Area”, a letter from the aspiring mayor Mr Desmond Maslen was published about the long awaited roadworks in Abundance Rd, Medowie.

The changes he recommends to Council would require further earthworks, drainage, kerbing and asphalt in lieu of a typical rural road bitumen seal, costing at least $1million more than budgeted.

(It could even be more, because there are lots

To cover that cost, either some other road in Port Stephens misses out on that important road repair or a special rate variation needs to be sought (Newcastle has a 47% increase under the Labor leadership), putting up everyone’s rates.

REMEMBER the Lemon Tree ghost?

It was a strange phenomenon which appeared in the form of a bright light late at night along the stretch of road leading into town.

To bring it on, motorists would speed up.

This certainly did make lights appear but they were the red and blue flashing lights from the highway patrol.

This urban myth went viral and inspired a movie which was made in South Australia for the Asian market.

Recently, local hoons have been speeding up late at

night on the main road in the town itself but for a different

reason. They have been trying to ‘max out’ the speed

Annual Council Grants Announced

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Annual Council grants have been announced with a $176,000 nod to community organisations in support of some wonderful projects and community endeavours.

Applications across all five grant programs were officially approved and voted upon unanimously by councillors at last week’s council meeting.

The five areas cover community, environmental, heritage, cultural and Aboriginal projects.

Port Stephens Council’s General Manager, Wayne Wallis, says the grant programs are run annually and are a great opportunity to fund community initiatives.

“These funds go to many deserving groups who go on to make great contributions to Port Stephens,” Mr Wallis said.

Programs for Medowie and Tilligerry that were successful in gaining funding include, but are

not limited to: Medowie Assembly of God for contributions towards their foodworks program.

Medowie Little Athletics were granted a contribution towards clubhouse enhancements and their arty athletics mural.

Worimi Warriors under 17s received a contribution towards attending Indigenous football galas.

Lemon Tree Passage park, reserves and tidy towns committee to remove three coral trees along Tilligerry creek.

Tilligerry landcare group to continue the restoration of biodiversity at Tilligerry Habitat and the Tilligerry Peninsula Committee bush regeneration project.

Tanilba Bay Parks, Reserves and Hall Committee to remove weed species and replant native vegetation on-site at Sunset Park and RAF Park.

Medowie Christian School to build an aquaponics demonstration garden.

“It’s so good to help make our home the best place on earth,” he said.

LISA Henderson from Lemon Tree Passage is well and truly moving with the times.

She is an advocate of QR technology.

By adopting it, Tilligerry could be at the cutting edge of innovation using QR to enhance the knowledge of our town for both locals and tourists alike.

“If for, example we build a website focusing on the history of Tilligerry, people using an app on their mobile can click on one of the pixilated QR squares and gain access to the site,” Lisa said.

“There would be videos, audios and slide shows available. The QR squares would be strategically placed around the peninsula,” she added.

“The possibilities are endless. We could have a QR set of markers linked to our wildlife and another concentrating on our restaurants and food outlets for example.”

“At the moment, my business and family commitments keep me fully occupied, but as soon as I have spare time, I’ll be working on

“I’m sure that Council and the various social and business groups around town will come on board.”

The Henderson family itself could easily be an interesting subject for QR focus.

Honour For World War I Soldier

THE local community is invited to Sketchley Cottage, Raymond Terrace on Saturday, 8 July from 10.00am to witness the honouring of World War I serviceman, Private Herbert Hamilton.

For the first time, Private Hamilton’s medals will be presented.

Killed In Action in 1916, Hamilton, whose next of kin was his employer, has never had his war medals claimed.

That is, until now.

Local historians and authors, Mr John Gillam and Mrs Yvonne Fletcher, researched the soldier and uncovered anomalies in how medals were issued.

Mr Gillam and Mrs Fletcher were convinced the medals of Hamilton, and others, remained unissued.

In a first of its kind decision, they identified that the Defence Honours and Awards policy regarding the issuing of medals posthumously was adequate for genuine claimants.

As this policy had not been previously applied, they used Hamilton as a test case and with the full support of the Raymond Terrace and District Historical Society, application was made to have the medals issued to the museum to appropriately commemorate the service and sacrifice of the soldier.

Ms Meryl Swanson, MP, will officially handover the medals to the President of the Raymond Terrace Historical Society, Mr Ken Barlow, in a special ceremony open to the public.

In an interview, Mr John Gillam told News Of The Area, “The plight of Herbert Hamilton prompted us to see what we could do to have him remembered.”

When asked why it was important that a soldier be given recognition 100 years after his death, Mr Gillam said, “Recognition of service is deserved regardless of time.”

“How many people are so alone in the world they use their employer as next of kin?”

Of the project, Mr Gillam said, “Our project has not concluded yet.”

“We await word from Defence Honours and Awards as to whether these medals came from the original stock archived in the late 1920s.”

“We would like to encourage Port Stephens families to have their family war memorabilia preserved and displayed by the Raymond Terrace Historical Society.”

For those traveling to France on a battlefield tour, Hamilton’s name appears on memorial panel 152 of the Australian War Memorial, on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

AT THE 21st annual dinner held at the Williamtown Union Hall on Wednesday, 28 June the Rotary Club of Williamtown welcomed their new President, Mr Richard Byrne.

Rotary International, which began in 1905 in Chicago, is perhaps most famous of being involved in its eradication of polio program through the tireless efforts of their volunteers in raising money to fund vaccination programs, as member John

At the formal handover, which includes the passing of the ceremonial presidential chains from the current to the new President, several presentations were made to guests and members.

Outgoing President, Geoffrey Hamilton, who has overseen many initiatives this past year, has had what he describes as, “an interesting year.”

Under Mr Hamilton’s leadership, Rotary have also organised another successful Medowie Carols in the Park.

The Club has also initiated a new fundraiser which was very popular with locals, Santa Photos at a Medowie café, which raised money for the Shelter Box Disaster Relief, a topic News Of The Area has previously reported.

The boxes are designed to be dropped from aircraft over disaster areas, and at a cost of $1000 each, contain items such as cooking equipment, a family-size tent, children’s activities, mosquito net, solar light and other items needed in an emergency.

In a light-hearted end to his Presidency, Mr Hamilton paid compliment to his wife, Diana Hamilton, who he married in February this year saying, “I would like to give a huge thank you to my darling wife, Diana, who has backed me all the way, but does keep reminding me that the Presidency was not in the marriage contract.”

In his incoming President’s address, Richard Byrne committed to developing the membership of the Williamtown Rotary Club.

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE popularity and awareness of women’s sport is increasing every year, with some major sporting codes now enjoying national exposure via television deals such as the Women’s AFL (AFLW).

However, this emergence didn’t just happen overnight.

It started at grassroots level.

It started in schools.

Some of the female students from Irrawang High School have joined this revolution and jumped onboard to do their bit to be a part of the world of women in sport.

Students from years 7 through to 10 combined to make up the Irrawang High School Rugby League team in last week’s Newcastle Knights Rugby League Competition.

They trained at least twice a week for the competition, both at lunchtime and after school with Aboriginal Education Worker Sheridan Noble for the last term and a half.

The school entered two teams, Year 7 and 8 girls, and under 16 girls.

This was Irrawang’s second year entering the competition, and they certainly came into this year’s competition bigger

By Geoff WALKER LOOK at the picture. You’ve seen this bloke before. We featured him with a framed picture of a large flathead he caught on a lure. With the flathead run now finished, Dave Hoyle and his fishing buddies are turning their attention to the big winter bream and they have caught some monsters.

Recently Dave nailed a 40cm bream which, using a fish length to weight converter translates to 1.6kg or 3.5lbs.

That’s not all: he has caught a total of eight bream over that mark. The biggest was 48cm. This comes across as 2.7kg or 5.9lbs.

Where did he get them?

Dave was coy about revealing his secret spot but in general, he advises wannabe fisher folk to cast in amongst the channels in the oyster racks and always on the incoming tide.

“We are sports fishermen,” he said.

“All of those big fish were returned to the water to breed and prosper.”

Average Resident Revealed Melissa Smith is the typical Aussie, according to the 2016 Census.

MELISSA Smith is the typical Aussie, according to the 2016 Census.

At 38 years of age, female, Australian-born and married with two children, Melissa ticks all the boxes.

Add in the family’s two cars and three-bedroom home, and Mrs Smith said she is “proud to be average”.

“I had a bit of a laugh when I heard the description and realised it was exactly me,” she said.

But with the region having one of the oldest demographics in the country, it is no surprise that the average Port Stephens or

Myall Coast resident is much older than the typical Aussie.

According to census data released last week, the average person in Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest is a 62-year-old woman born in Australia, who lives with her husband in a three-bedroom home, which is owned outright.

The couple have one car and a weekly household income of $903.

The data also shows that people aged 65 years and over made up 45.2 percent of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest population in 2016, compared to 37.6 percent in 2011.

In Bulahdelah, the median

age is 53 years and slightly lower in Karuah at 50 years, but still well above the national average.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said, “The older populations in these areas reflect a preference among many Australians to retire to coastal and rural parts of the country.”

Other information from the 2016 Census shows Karuah’s population hit 1,411 in 2016, an increase of five percent since the 2011 census.

In Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, the number of residents rose to 5,037, up from 4,499 in 2011, however Bulahdelah’s population fell from 1,519 in

2011 down to 1,424 in 2016.

The census data also shows that around half of all homes in the region are owned outright, which is significantly higher than

Australian Statistician, David W. Kalisch, said the 2016 Census had a response rate of 95.1 percent.

“Sixty-three percent of people completed the Census online, embracing the digital-

first approach,” he said.

Although plagued with problems in its delivery, Mr Kalisch said the ABS remain confident the 2016 Census provides an accurate reflection of Australian communities.

Mural tells a story The Aboriginal Education Committee of Medowie Public School would like to thank everyone who assisted us in some way to finalise the mural.

MEDOWIE Public School is embracing Australia’s rich cultural history, with the official opening this week of their special new art installation.

In 2015 the Aboriginal Education Committee at Medowie Public School started the consultation process with Cherie Johnson from ‘Speaking in Colour’ to design an Aboriginal-inspired mural.

School representative, Vicki Winters told News Of The Area, “As a committee, we wanted something that was unique to our school and not your traditional Aboriginal artwork.”

“Instead, we wanted an artwork the students of Medowie Public School could relate to and understand the full meaning behind their creation.”

With the help of some students and Cherie, they came up with an artwork inspired by the work of Albert Namatjira and Gordon

Bennett.

Vicki Winters said, “Our mural depicts the current setting of Medowie Public School, the tall trees, sand dunes and the water nearby.”

“The large Aboriginal symbol over the landscape is a depiction of our school at the heart of everything our students do.”

“The smaller circles and lines represent the various journeys our students will take into the outside world, how they will embark on many different paths, but will always have Medowie Public School as the core.”

To begin the process, Cherie Johnson drew the design and divided it into 378 pieces to be painted onto individual tiles.

Each student and staff member painted a tile, using the supplied piece of the artwork as a guide.

Medowie Public School then utilised the services of Irrawang High School and Back to Back Galleries to fire their tiles. Once all the tiles were fired the MPS Aboriginal

Education Committee spent many many hours piecing together the large jigsaw puzzle, packing it away, then repeating the process.

After trying to find someone to install our mural we finally found two amazing

parents who offered to hang the mural over a weekend.

On Tuesday 13 June, Medowie Public School unveiled their new Aboriginal Mural and invited all those who assisted with the murals construction.

The Aboriginal Education Committee of Medowie Public School would like to thank everyone who assisted us in some way to finalise the mural.

MEDOWIE Netball Club have given a group of excited youngsters a taste of the sport, in an effort to encourage them to join the club and further their interest.

Twenty-one participants in the four to seven age group have just completed the ten week Net Set Go program held at the Medowie Netball Courts last Wednesday afternoon.

The program is an introduction to netball through the use of fun games in a fun environment.

Medowie Netball Club wishes to acknowledge and thank Lily Tomlins and Rachel Stunell for their commitment in running the program.

Medowie Netball runs this program every year.
