NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch week encourages community members to get involved with their local group.

Neighbourhood Watch is a community led safety and awareness program that aims to prevent crime, stop antisocial behaviour and improve security and quality of life for everyone in your community.

Medowie Neighbourhood Watch was lucky to have Bill Hackney, the Hunter Region Area Coordinator for Neighbourhood Watch, attend the Medowie meeting last week as a guest speaker.

Bill spoke about the history of Neighbourhood Watch, how it is funded, what groups can do for the community, and how to best get their message across to residents.

Year 12 Graduates

A PROUD group of 16 students from Medowie Christian School has graduated from Year 12, celebrated by family, friends, teachers and the whole student body from K-12 at a special ceremony last week.

Celebrating with them was Ryan Palmer, the new Mayor of Port Stephens, as well as members of the school board, Overflow Church, Compassion and the RAAF. Dux of Year 12 and outgoing school Captain, Joshua Archer, spoke glowingly of his time at the school and encouraged the students following in his footsteps to take charge of their destiny, quoting from ‘Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley.

The Year 12 students were presented with their graduation certificates, medallions and special awards, by Mr Simon Herd the MCS Principal, Mrs Tracey Deal the MCS Deputy Principal and Mrs Robyn Goldfinch the Stage Advisor for Year 12.

Medowie Christian School has quickly earned a positive reputation in our community as being a school that recognises and promotes the strengths and achievements of its students.

Parents who attended the presentation ceremony reflected on how special the event was, and that it was clear the school had put a lot of effort into ensuring the students felt their time at the school, and the contributions they had made there, were invaluable.

Year 12 parent Sandy White told News Of The Area, “The speeches from the school were so wonderfully respectful to the students.”

“The awards presented not only focused on actual academic or sporting achievements, but also on the student and their contributions to the school and their fellow students that are sometimes not recognised in a formal school environment.”

“My son received an award that we weren’t expecting, and as the school spoke warmly about him and his efforts, I wasn’t even aware if it was for my son.”

“I admit to a few tears when I realised, because it was truly clear that the school knew him as a person, not just a school knowing

The students also signed a commemorative Bible, which is a perpetual memory of the students for the school to keep.

morning tea, the Year 12 students left the school for their study break before returning to complete their HSC examinations which commence

on 16 October.

Now the dust has settled concerning the last local government election, I’m still peeved by something.

There was no sausage sizzle. It was the same at the last federal election. Not one sizzling sausage in sight. With most elections about as interesting as watching cement set, the only thing that saved them was the almost compulsory sizzle, raffle or cake stall.

What is happening to democracy and the Australian way of life?

Dear JWS,

The wafting odour of a sizzling sausage is enough to entice even the most reticent voter.

Forget the optimistic political pundits handing out flyers.

We don’t vote because Roger McMinty is going to build a theme park in Tea Gardens, or Mary Rogerson is going to fill every pot hole in Hawks Nest.

No, Mr JWS, we attend the polling booths, every man and his dog (particularly his dog), for the sausage sizzle (and to dodge a fine).

Communities live and breath sausage sizzles.

There’s something nourishing about trying to balance an icy can of lemonade in one hand and a slice of white bread, soggy with barbecue sauce, offal juice and sheep intestine, in the other.

I mean emotionally nourishing, of course, because it’s certainly not nourishing from a dietary perspective.

We’d be better off with half-coconuts filled with quinoa, beetroot, sprouts, cucumber and grated carrot (washed down with a pineapple, orange and mint smoothie).

But where’s the fun in that, JWS? We’re not a bunch of Bondi Hipsters. No, we’re Hawks Nest Hobblers with Hip Replacements.

And we’re okay with that, as long as it comes with a sausage on voting day.

A Taxing Time

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers there are serious consequences if they choose not to meet their tax obligations this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said most Australians want to do the right thing, but some refuse to pay their share, or pay at all.

“In the first instance we always try to help and educate taxpayers about how to get their tax right.

Unfortunately in some cases people don’t respond or deliberately make false statements to avoid paying the right amount of tax – and we have to pursue this,” she said.

Ms Anderson said the ATO has sophisticated systems and analytics that ensure wrongdoing can’t fly under the radar. If a claim raises a red flag in the system, auditors will investigate further.

“In 2015–16 for individual taxpayers we conducted around 450,000 reviews and audits, resulting in adjustments of nearly $1 billion in income tax, and prosecuted over 1,300 taxpayers,” Ms Anderson said.

“Criminal investigations and prosecution are a last resort and not something we take lightly. However, Australians expect us to make sure nobody gets a free ride and we are prepared to use all the

avenues available to us to protect the integrity of the tax system.

“Our message to all taxpayers is that the ATO takes firm action against those who actively choose to ignore their obligations or try to game the system.”

“When choosing a course of action, we consider a number of factors including a taxpayer’s history of compliance, and the number of chances we’ve already given them to get back on track with their obligations,” Ms Anderson said.

“The decision to prosecute is only made if we have exhausted other options to get the taxpayer to change their behaviour and correct their affairs.”

The ATO is aware some people are willing to take risks and falsely claim work-related expenses. Ms Anderson said taxpayers considering risky claims should be on notice that the ATO is serious about dealing

Hunter Water advised Council on Thursday 26 September that a blockage in a local wastewater main had caused wastewater to enter the stormwater system

with non-compliance, and the consequences can be costly for those found to be doing the wrong thing.

“In the worst cases a penalty can be up to 95% of the tax shortfall amount. For example, we took a taxpayer to court over his false car work-related expense claims in two consecutive years, and he was ordered to pay more than $4,000 in fines and court costs,” Ms Anderson said.

“In another instance, a taxpayer had neglected to lodge his tax returns over a 12-year period despite being given a number of opportunities to comply.

After being fined more than $100,000 and still failing to get his tax affairs in order, he was handed down an eight month suspended sentence.

Swearing in Ceremony

THE new Port Stephens Council lineup is official, with a special ceremony not seen before in Port Stephens Council history.

Councillors were formally sworn in, with their choice of oath or acknowledgement, in front of a packed crowd at the Port Stephens Council Chambers.

Mayor Ryan Palmer took his oath first, and was sworn in as our new popularly elected Mayor.

He now also holds the title of being the youngest Mayor to be elected in Port Stephens.

He thanked the Port Stephens residents in the audience, telling them “I want to thank you for your support, and trusting that I, in turn, will support you all, and our community, and give Port Stephens all that it deserves.”

Each individual councillor was then given their chance to address the crowd, thank their supporters, and discuss their vision for the new term.

Central Ward Councillor Sarah Smith said, “This

has been such a great experience getting to know so many wonderful people in our community, and I am so thankful to have been elected with experienced councillors and newly elected councillors.”

“I am looking forward to achieving great things together this council term.”

West Ward Councillor

Giacomo Arnott reminded the audience of his intentions to be a part of an accountable, transparent council, working towards improving the relationship with ratepayers.

Ken Jordan, re-elected West Ward Councillor, worded the experience of being a councillor perfectly for those in attendance at this special ceremony.

“To the re-elected councillors, and to the new councillors, I need to tell you this; what you have in this building is priceless.”

“The best staff of any council in NSW, the best area to serve within and we are the elected representatives to get things done.”

“We are so fortunate to have this opportunity, it’s a blessing,” he said.

The first item on the agenda after the swearing in ceremony was the election of our Port Stephens Deputy

Mayor.

Central Ward Councillor and Medowie resident Chris Doohan was successful in taking on the position for another year, having served the last term of council as Deputy Mayor for two years.

Deputy Mayor, Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area, “I am honoured to have been unanimously re-elected, as it shows recognition and support from the re-elected former councillors of a job well done during the last two terms of being Deputy Mayor, and the trust of the newly elected councillors that I will continue to serve them well.”

“I look forward to supporting the Mayor and councillors, and being a mentor to the newly elected councillors.”

“I am confident we have a great balance in Council now of experience, new ideas and evenly distributed locality representation across Port Stephens,” he said.

Abraham (Abe) Petty, Walter (Wally) Richardson, Richard (Dick) Grimshaw and Ernest (Darby) Munro were good mates, originally placed together in the 2nd company 2/20th Battalion before being split up later during service.

Abe, Wally, Dick and Darby were all killed in action, and did not return home.

Wally, who ended up serving as a Gunner with the 17th Anti-Tank Unit, had a wife and a two-yearold daughter at home.

His daughter Joan, a Medowie resident, grew up hearing stories about her father, his time in the war, and stories of the battles.

Seventy-five years on, she feels that some of these stories have been overlooked.

She spoke to News Of The Area about two of the stories she carries with her.

“One important battle we don’t hear about is a place called the Tol Plantation, where soldiers were mercilessly killed in horrific circumstances, and left there in the jungle,” Joan said.

“My father was one of these men killed there, and I urge people to do some reading and learn about this horrific episode in WWII, and what happened to these brave young diggers.”

With Wally’s life taken at Tol Plantation, and Abe making the ultimate sacrifice at a place called Ambor Island, their mates Dick and Darby died tragically in the often overlooked tragedy of Montevideo Maru, the second of Joan’s stories to share of overlooked battles.

The Montevideo Maru

was a Japanese Motor Vessel that was torpedoed off Luzon in the Philippines by an American Submarine, unaware that the vessel had Australian Prisoners of War and many other innocent civilians on board.

Sadly, they were left to drown in the hold of the ship, never given a chance to escape.

On board were over 1000 victims, consisting of nuns, nurses, priests, soldiers and civilians.

Joan said, “The 75th anniversary of these events has recently passed without fanfare.”

“Maybe, even though next year it will be 76 years, someone may pause and remember that after all this time, their lives were not given in vain.”

“There are families who still feel the loss and pain of their family member to this day.”

YOU may have noticed dozens of red ribbons when

travelling from Tilligerry to Medowie.

The initiative, launched by the Williamtown and

Surrounds, Fullerton Cove Residents Action Group and Salt Ash Community First, was designed to keep the residents in the Red Zone in the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Two years on and life in and around the Red Zone in Williamtown, Fullerton Cove and Salt Ash continues with daily stress, an unknown future and looming threat of cancer as the Cabbage Tree Road cancer cluster grows.

A representative from the Williamtown and Surrounds Residents Action Group told News Of The Area, “Every day we are hearing about locals suffering a debilitating illness and suspecting the carcinogenic immunosuppressant PFAS chemicals are to blame.”

“The residents are suffering and the chemicals are still leaching off the RAAF Base Williamtown, the Government does not care!”

Red Zone resident Mel Marshall told News Of The Area, “The past two years for us has been unbearable at times, and it has pushed

us all to the edge.”

Mel’s children have had to endure multiple blood tests as well as additional childhood immunisations, as they were no longer immunised.

It has affected the family financially, and it has taken precious time away from their family time, with meetings and interviews becoming a public part of a

life they had always tried to keep private.

“Despite all those things, life in the Red Zone has made us stronger,” Mel said.

“It has shown our kids that we stand up and fight, instead of laying down and taking it, and we will continue to fight,” The group has asked anyone who would like to be involved, to put up a red

ribbon and post on social media with the hashtag #redribbons4redzone.

They would love to see community members get creative, take selfies, include your pets, put a ribbon on your letter box, share your suburb and help send a message to affected residents that they are not suffering alone.

TO mark the start of the summer swimming season, Tilligerry Aquatic Centre put on a special treat for the children.

Staff from Oakvale Farm at Salt Ash brought an assortment of small animals for the children to pat, cuddle and feed.

These included chickens, ducklings, guinea pigs, lambs, kid goats, a Shetland pony and a calf.

All three council owned pools are now on extended hours.

In the case of Tilligerry, the pool is open on weekdays from 6am to 6pm, Saturday hours are from from 9am

to 5pm and Sunday trades between 9am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, Oakvale Farm is moving away from its ‘zoo’ image and is encouraging a more sustainable ethos in the care and conservation of native animals.

Staffer Jordan told News Of The Area, “Koalas are the most loved and threatened native species in Port Stephens. We received a Government grant for their care, so we used it to plant out a forest of koala friendly eucalypts as a sustainable food source.”

“Soon we will no longer have to scour the countryside for gum trees to harvest,” he said.

Celebration raises funds

INSTEAD of the old traditional ‘muck up day’ of the past, Irrawang High School Year 12 students decided to put their final day of schooling to a charitable use.

Their ‘Year 12 Celebration Day’ was a resounding success with these amazing Year 12 students raising a whopping $1212.30 from a day jam-packed full of fun activities for the Westpac Helicopter.

This charity was chosen in appreciation of assistance that the helicopter service gave to Year 12 student Nikita Taylor when she was involved

in an accident earlier this year.

The day kicked off with students greeting staff at the gates, asking kindly for donations to be able to use the staff car park and park their cars.

Mr Baxter, the school principal, was surprised when he came face to face with his doppelgangers – several students dressed

Breakfast pancakes were the order of the day, before a hilarious whole school assembly.

Students paid to see their favourite teachers, and the odd principal and deputy or two, given a taste of a cream pie in the face before being dunked in cold water.

All for a great cause of course.

To top off the fun for the whole school, a disco was held in the hall at recess.

The Year 12 students then headed up to the oval for some water fun and to spend some time by themselves.

School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “It really is a huge congrats to

the student organisers of the celebration day activities. It was a smooth, well planned and well-run morning, inclusive of every student.”

“All students were respectful and very well behaved.”

Kids To Get Active

THE NSW Government has recently launched a welcomed new initiative to get kids active and healthy.

From January 2018, parents will be able to register online to receive the annual $100 rebate for each child aged from Kindergarten to Year 12.

This was a key initiative in the 2017-18 State budget as a result of concerns regarding rising obesity levels amongst children.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, is committed to reducing childhood obesity by five percent over 10 years.

The scheme will be funded by $207 million over four years.

The vouchers can

be used towards sports registration fees, swimming lessons, gymnastics or athletics.

A consultation is being held prior to the starting date to decide exactly which activities will be covered.

The vouchers are not means-tested as they are to encourage physical activity for children.

Activity and healthy living habits are formed at a young age, so it is really imperative that parents encourage their children to be as active as possible.

Local sports organisations that have committed to accepting the vouchers include: Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Nelson Bay Hockey Club, Nelson Bay Football Club and Port Stephens Power Junior AFL Club.

The Department of Health estimates 20-25 percent of children and adolescents in Australia are overweight, with a quarter of that figure classed as obese.

Lack of exercise can lead to other health problems such as depression, diabetes type 2, sleep apnoea, breathlessness and heat intolerance.

Red Zone Roast

THE recent Red Zone roast dinner, hosted by the the Community Helping Community Inc. Wellbeing Program, was a wonderful success with over 50 people attending when the group anticipated approximately 30 attendees.

Julie Bailey from the Community group told News Of The Area, “We cooked up a storm with over 17 kilos of pork and 16kgs of veggies, followed by stewed apple and custard and a selection of wonderful desserts brought along by Community.”

The Community Helping Community Inc. Wellbeing program was put in place 12 months ago by the community of the Red Zone as they could see friends and neighbours stressing over the uncertainty of the PFAS contamination, and realised that they needed to do something to help bring the community together.

“It is with connections we build a stronger community that can help support one another,” Julie said.

“The program would not be a success without the help from all the volunteers who bring it together.”

Dig Deep Celebrate Garden Week

The Christmas Bush Club has been looking after a section of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre and on the approach to Nelson Bay Road.

It is a part of their charter that members help with community gardens.

The gardeners are hoping that by visiting the garden it will inspire visitors to enjoy the pleasure you get from working and walking through a garden.

The Arts Centre’s secret fairy also looks forward to receiving letters from visitors, which can be handed in at the desk in the main gallery.

Both girls compete in the eisteddfods both as solo performers and in the group dances with Debbie Rae. Both girls attend Irrawang High School, where Amelia is part of the junior dance ensemble and Zahli is part of the senior dance ensemble.

Zahli is looking forward to leaving next Thursday for the CAPA tour performing through outback Queensland.

Zahli told News Of The Area, “Dancing gives me a feeling of belonging in the world, created by the love of

dance.”

“I would love to be a dance teacher in the future.”

Amelia loves dancing because it gives her an escape from the rest of the world. She loves to perform and make people happy.

Amelia told News Of The Area, “I would love to perform around the world and one day come back to Medowie and become a dance teacher.”

She already helps her dance teachers with the tiny tots both in class and on stage at the concerts each year.

She adores little children and loves to see them grow and enjoy their dancing as much as she does.

SADLY, being on a diet News Of The Area staff could not sample a piece of the 16 pizzas on offer at the recently relocated ‘Portside Pizza and Kebabs’ at Lemon Tree’s waterfront.

We did however seek the views of customers and all comments were positive.

This retail outlet is one of four new shop-fronts which replaced part of the old marina complex and so far, three of the four have tenants.

The development has given the waterfront strip a lift and makes the commercial properties more inviting to both locals and tourists alike.

Proprietor Candice said that business was brisk and much better than expected.

For those pizza and kebab freaks out there, a small pizza is priced at around $7 and for the top-of-the range large seafood special you are looking at $25.
