THE power of the people has seen a modified Nelson Bay Strategy and Implementation Plan for the Nelson Bay CBD adopted by Council, at what can only be described as a stormy Council meeting last week.

Members of the community and the Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) were well represented at the Council meeting.

Councillor Nell’s motion for a modified plan will see built heights capped at 5 storeys in the town centre and 8 storeys on the fringes.

The amended motion was supported 5 votes to 4 with Mayor Ryan Palmer unable to vote due to pecuniary interests.

The SRV has been proposed as council believes that significant works, including major projects, within the local Government area are unable to be funded within its existing revenue structure.

Currently, council rates increase by a 2.5% per annum rate peg which is estimated to raise $30.9m over a seven year period.

Port Stephens Council believes that this option will only allow them to maintain existing service levels and have therefore proposed three options as part of the SRV. The first option is a 6.5% increase per annum which would generate approximately $56.3m in addition to the $30.9m raised through the annual rate peg totalling $87.2.

The second is a 7.5% increase generating $71.8m in addition to the rate peg total of $30.9m totalling $102.7m, while the third option is an 8.5% increase generating $88m in addition to the rate peg total of $30.9m totalling

REPORTER q Councillor Giacomo Arnott has fought strongly against the Special Rate Variation, and is encouraging residents to join the public gallery at this week’s council meeting.

“Buried somewhere in the hundreds of pages of information is supposedly a proposal to increase heights to ten storeys in some parts of town, but not all.

She believes that for some reason, Council had decided to give residents

only a few days to consider this final proposal, which is grossly inadequate in her opinion, and she imagines it’ll be perceived as an attempt to dodge scrutiny.

Meanwhile the TRRA’s President Geoff Washington told News Of The Area, “We will continue to explore all avenues to achieve better outcomes for Nelson Bay, that reflect the principles adopted in the existing 2012 Strategy, and the overwhelming weight of community opinion.”

COPSY continues vital work PORT Stephens students will learn vital life and resilience skills to support improved mental health and wellbeing, through a series of workshops being funded through a $50,000 investment by the Berejiklian Government.

Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack today announced the investment for Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) to deliver around 70 workshops, which will reach more than 6000 people in the local community.

“This funding gives members of the community the opportunity to connect with each other and play an active role in identifying the signs and symptoms of mental illness,” Ms Cusack said.

“It will give people the skills and confidence to reach out and have a conversation about mental health and understand how to access support if needed.”

Liberal Candidate for Port Stephens, Jaimie Abbott said the sessions encourage and teach young people how to

open up about their concerns, and make informed life choices.

“This funding is part of a number of NSW Government initiatives aimed at helping communities face mental health challenges unique to their area, and I commend COPSY for the work that they do in supporting vulnerable young people in our community,” Ms Abbott said.

President of COPSY, John de Ridder is extremely pleased with the investment and said the funding would go a long way in helping the youth in Port Stephens.

“COPSY welcomes this very generous Grant from the Berejiklian Government which will enable us to deliver programs into our local schools to improve mental health services,” said Mr de Ridder.

Sports ground upgrades across Port Stephens DUTY MLC, Catherine Cusack and Liberal candidate for Port Stephens, Jaimie Abbott, paid a visit to the Mallabula Sports Complex to announce Port Stephens Council would receive $980,000 in Grants from the Stronger Country Communities Fund for sporting facility upgrades.

“I want to largely congratulate the Port Stephens community, who this funding will impact the most, with sport being a core physical and social activity that improves the health and wellbeing of every local community across New South Wales,” Ms Cusack said. $200,000 will go towards upgrading the Tilligerry Tennis Clubhouse, including a total internal and external repaint, roof replacement, addition of a sheltered seating area, construction of accessible amenities, and internal renovations including kitchen and seating refurbishment.

“This project involves the major renovation of the Tilligerry Tennis Clubhouse at the Mallabula Sports Complex, which services the entire Tilligerry Peninsula and is in dire need of refurbishment,” said Ms Cusack.

Tomaree Regional Sports Complex in Nelson Bay will see an injection of $200,000 for the construction of two new croquet lawn courts.

“Sport, recreation and the outdoors is a way of life for our community in Port Stephens.

It has the effect of bonding us together and I’m truly thankful that the Berejiklian Government recognises that,” said Ms Abbott.

“Access for everyone is something I am extremely passionate about and I am so glad that this has been a key theme across these upgrades.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the roll out of the second round projects takes Stronger Country Communities funding to $300 million.

“I congratulate Port Stephens Council and look forward to these fantastic local sports and community facility improvements,” Mr Barilaro said.

Mental Health Matters Awards COMMUNITY champions, workplace support programs and community groups who have come together to support each other were some of the recipients of this year’s Mental Health Matters Awards.

The annual Awards are run by WayAhead, and presented during the annual Mental Health Month launch event in Sydney.

Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network was honoured for its work, with a prestigious Award at the ceremony.

Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network is a local initiative funded by donations and created to raise awareness about the impact of suicide on loved ones and to bring our community together to inspire love, hope and remember lives lost.

Members have restored a rugged neglected headland, built a seat and memorial plinth and developed walking paths.

Each year people are invited to ‘Walk With Us’ in a friendly community

environment, to start the conversation about our emotions and fears, and support those who have lost loved ones through a suicide.

Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network also supports suicide prevention training programs from Wesley and Lifeline, provides information about mental health services and is building a labyrinth as a “walking meditation” mindfulness space, to aid people in need of stress and anxiety reduction

Debris continues to wash ashore

PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington has backed up concerns from Hawks Nest and Tomaree Peninsula residents about the ongoing incidence of rubbish from the YM Efficiency washing onshore.

Residents report that rubbish continues to appear regularly on Jimmys Beach and around the Fingal Headland.

With school holidays about to begin, residents are particularly concerned about the impact this ongoing rubbish will have on the region’s reputation as a holiday destination.

NSW Maritime has advised residents to report any rubbish they see to 13 12 36.

Locally based contractors

from Varley continue to be engaged to respond to the container spill.

During the recent NSW Parliament Budget Estimates Ms Washington put the following questions to the Minister for Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey MP. The Minister has until 3 October 2018 to respond to these written questions.

Regarding the YM Efficiency container spill off the coast of Hawks Nest, what un-recovered costs has RMS incurred in responding to this incident?

What costs has the ship’s insurer incurred to date? And how many claims for damage by local commercial fishers have been lodged with the ship’s insurer?

Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “I am concerned about the ongoing damage this container spill is having on our reputation as a picturesque, pristine holiday destination.”

“Local contractors Varley have done a fantastic job in responding to rubbish as it is reported, so I encourage any residents who notice rubbish to contact RMS via 13 12 36 so they can keep on top of the situation.”

“I have already questioned the Minister about the costs of this operation, and I want to ensure the ship’s insurer pays for every cent of this clean up for as long as it takes for the impacts of the spill to end,” she said.

When students at St Michael’s were asked why they decided to raise money for the farmers, Layla Lewis from Year 2 replied by

saying, “Because they are in drought.

“The money we raised can go towards food for their cattle or water for their crops.

“That way they can keep supplying us with food in our supermarkets,” she said.

St Michael’s School as many other Service clubs and schools have stepped up to raise money for the farmers and their families.

Many people on the land are suffering financial burdens and loss due to the worst drought Australia has ever seen.

Many people in the St Michael’s school community have links with rural communities in New South Wales and know that times are tough for people on the land and felt that it was important to help and support the farmers.

278 Squadron based at RAAF Base Williamtown hosted students and teaching staff from Wirreanda Public School, Medowie.

The visit program included the opportunity for students to engage in a range of interactive activities and to view an F/A-18 Hornet.

RAAF Base Williamtown has an enduring connection with the Wirreanda School community. With a significant proportion of Defence families living in Medowie and surrounding suburbs, Wirreanda Public School has one of the highest numbers of attending students in the

THIS week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) awards were presented by the Principal of Seaham Public School, Mr Craig Partridge.

Seaham implemented PBL in 2016 to create a whole school process for managing student behaviours at school and to help the supporting teachers to consistently deal with these behaviours.

Community PBL has added another dimension and is really assisting Seaham to connect with the wider community.

The students particularly look forward to the announcement of the community PBL winner each week.

I keep missing out on properties?

DF Raymond Terrace IT is incredibly frustrating for buyers when they keep missing out on their ideal properties. It is also frustrating for your real estate agent as they also want to see you with your dream home. Now, it is not always the case but missing out is sometimes due to the buyers not taking immediate and effective action upon finding the property they wish to purchase.

If requiring finance, I advise that buyers have pre-approval before seeking a property, so at least they know their purchasing budget. Just supplying all the documents and information the banks require is a time-consuming job.

If you are obtaining pest & building inspections book them in immediately. If you have a deposit, pay it into either your solicitors or real estate agents sales trust account for holding, ready for exchange of contracts. Sometimes a transfer of funds to this account can take a few days depending on your transfer limits with your bank.

If the real estate agent tells you that it is imperative for you to move quickly because you have buyer competition, listen and take fast action NOW! Hope that helps.

Nineteen Books and Art and Craft Show $2,341.68 raised

RAYMOND Terrace can now lay claim to being the home of the best bookworm in New South Wales, with a ten year old avid reader taking out the MS Readathon The MS Readathon is a fundraiser we have all come to know and love, with 2018 being it’s 40th anniversary of encouraging children to read

books, and raise funds and awareness at the same time for Multiple Sclerosis.

St Brigid’s Primary School student, 10-yearold Amelia Said (‘Millie the Bookworm’), read up a storm to be this year’s highest fundraiser in New South

Amelia unfortunately knows first hand how badly awareness and funds are needed for this terrible disease, with a close family member in her life suffering from MS. Amelia doesn’t do things by halves, taking out the top fundraising spot this year in her very first MS Readathon.

She read nineteen books, and collected $2,341.68 in donations from family and friends. Students raise money for MS by getting sponsored for reading as much as they can during the month of August.

Milly’s mother, Emma, a teacher at the school located in Raymond Terrace, said that Amelia has been an enthusiastic reader from a young age.

“Once she discovered the magic of books and the great adventures they contain there was no stopping her, and she can usually be found with her head in a book.”.

For the MS Readathon she chose the name ‘Millie the Bookworm’, which describes her perfectly.

“Amelia is such a special girl and her father, and I are so very proud of her.”

“Her two greatest passions are helping others and reading, so the Readathon was a fantastic way to do both at once,” said Emma.

Whilst Amelia loves all books, her favorites for the MS Readathon were Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling.

She first read the books when she was eight and has enjoyed reading them again.

Her other favourite was the Land of Stories series

IT’S that time of year again.

The artisans and crafters are out in full force, preparing for the annual Medowie Lions Club Art and Craft Show.

The show will take place this weekend, on Friday and Saturday 5 and 6 October at Medowie Community Hall.

Over the course of the event, there will of course be the exhibition of artworks in various media - all of which will be for sale.

There will be craft stalls featuring local, quality handmade goods including woodwork, lead lighting, jewellery, children’s clothing, candles, dog leads and coats, and lots more.

A display of working, scale-model steam trains is sure to delight the youngest and oldest budding artists or

crafters, and there’ll be a face painter available during the day too.

Refreshments will be available during both days, offering home cakes and sandwiches, tea, coffee and soft drink.

A ‘Make and Take’ workshop is bound to be popular this year, offering the chance to create a handmade card and take it home at the end of the lesson.

Robinson Reserve Revamp

PORT Stephens Duty MLC Catherine Cusack was back in the Bay this week with more funds, this time it’s Anna Bay’s Robinson Reserve that is set to gain under a $650,000 grant for improved infrastructure.

The funds will be used by Council for the second stage for the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place project.

The second stage of the work includes a whale watching viewing platform and interpretive signage as well as car park new showers and drinking station upgrades at Robinson Reserve.

This is a definite win for Anna Bay as Robinson Reserve will be transformed with a new skate park, a new playground with softfall and new amenities being installed.

Families will be able to enjoy the new BBQs and park furniture, with the transformation set to create a truly welcoming gateway to beautiful Birubi Beach.

Port Stephens Liberal Candidate, Jaimie Abbott, said she was very excited to see the funding for Stage Two of the project.

“Birubi Point is culturally significant to the Traditional Custodians of the area, the Worimi people, who still use the area today.

The history and connection that the Worimi people have to the land is demonstrated through abundant relics and resources collected in the area over thousands of years.”

“To ensure its protection, a large portion of this beautiful landscape was sanctioned as an Aboriginal Place by the NSW Government. This funding will further enable teaching about Worimi ancestry and culture to current and future generations,” Ms Abbott said.

The girls competed in the ‘Tournament of the Minds’ competition.

The team of seven girls, creatively named ‘Funny Bones 4.0’ first competed at the local schools level of Tournament of the Minds, at Newcastle Grammar School, where they won their Social Sciences Division.

AROUND 12.30pm last Sunday the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the Nelson Bay Area to a scuba diving situation.

A 58yr old male on his first dive reportedly ascended too quickly.

He was treated by ambulance paramedics and helicopters clinical team before being flown to John Hunter Hospital for further observation.

By Rachael VAUGHAN IN February this year, four local teens were invited to train in Sydney at Irontiger Taekwondo under Australian Coach Master Di Carn with her successful team, including Commonwealth Champion Kate McAdam.

Chase Thoburn 16, Mia Gillespie 14, Nicky Blanch 17 and Daniel Blanch 15 have a wealth of existing martial arts knowledge having trained with Imugi Martial Arts in Williamtown.

They committed to adapting their skills and applying them in corporation with the new skills they would build in World Taekwondo (Olympic style).

Since February, the four teens and their dedicated parents have travelled to Sydney every Saturday morning for their training session, as well as maintaining their existing training with Imugi and additional training, such as swimming.

They trained four to six times a week, competing in Sydney twice, Gold Coast Open, Lithgow and finally in Bendigo.

Having never trained in the sport taekwondo style, they had their work cut out for them, but their dedication and perseverance paid off.

Mia and Nicky remain undefeated all year including achieving NSW State Champion.

Daniel achieved NSW State Runner Up. Chase was unable to contest the State titles due to injury however all four qualified for the Australian Championships in Bendigo, Victoria
