NEWS Of The Area this week set about finding out the answer to the long discussed question of whether there were houses in the low lying tablelands where Grahamstown Dam was built.

News Of The Area met with Gwen Tinsley Faulkner, who grew up in Medowie, to set the record straight.

Gwen confirmed that, yes, there most certainly were houses under where the Dam is now, but that most of the properties were moved from the site during the Dam’s construction.

Gwen grew up in the family home at Medowie, which was eventually reclaimed by Hunter Water Board to build the Dam. Gwen’s parents Violet and Jack Tinsley and Maternal grandparents Ada and Arthur Williams,

Her father was a timber cutter and a cattleman, and her mother was a keen gardener.

Her grandfather was a drover.

Gwen fondly remembers her old home, and shared with News Of

Gwen recalled you needed to have a licence back then to sell eggs, and that her mother didn’t obtain such a licence.

“Someone dobbed her in, and I remember her being so cross when the Police turned up and gave her a warning and she realised someone had told on her,” she said.

A GROUP of residents living in the governmentimposed ‘Red Zone’ has taken a step away from the contamination issue and received a free guided tour through the rock pools of Boat Harbour.

The event was hosted by the Community Wellbeing Program, a group set up by Red Zone residents who saw the importance of community helping the community.

The program aims to produce free events for those dealing with the stresses of the contamination.

The group was led

by Jeannie Lawson from Harmony Visions who shared some of her extensive knowledge of the ecosystem of rock pools.

Both adults and children enjoyed the interactive tour, being able to get up close and personal with some of the amazing sea life at Boat Harbour.

Sea stars, sea slugs and red hermit crabs all turned on a show for their visitors.

Grahamstown Lake was constructed on the former Grahamstown Moors, low lying farm land, beginning in 1957.

Water from Grahamstown was first used in 1960, though it took some years before the whole scheme was completed.

“Kids in Need” a fundraising project to support kids in overcoming difficulties FROM Page 1

NSW Kids In Need is a charity group, whose objective is to support as many kids in need as possible by providing a single, united platform which supports six charities.

The “Kids in Need” fundraising project is designed to overcome the difficulties small charities experience in fundraising.

This project uses one annual fundraising event to maximise efforts and access more of the NSW public.

The six charities that benefit from the NSW Kids in Need Foundation Ltd are: Bear Cottage Children’s Hospice, Central Coast Kids In Need, Duke of Edinburgh Award - Australia, Muscular Dystrophy NSW, SHINE For Kids and Westmead Children’s Hospital Burns Unit.

It works like this: an email will arrive complete with your Telstra account number and your ‘reference bill number’.

The page is a replica of the real deal and is signed by

The blurb alleges that you have paid your monthly account twice and they need your banking details to repay you.

A simple check of your Telstra receipt will reveal a discrepancy in the figures quoted or a phone call to the telco on 13 22 00 will clarify the matter for you.

Medowie ANZAC Day

THE local community has once again supported the ANZAC Day ceremony held at Medowie’s war memorial.

Early in the morning on Tuesday, 25 April locals gathered to commemorate this most sacred day of remembrance.

Mr Neil Biggar, Secretary of Medowie’s local subbranch of the RSL told News Of The Area, “News programs are saying that attendances at ANZAC Day services were down on last year, but not at Medowie.”

“The Dawn Service was

just about packed up, and I suspect the crowd may have been larger than at the Centenary service in 2015.”

Supporting the community to commemorate, was a range of community volunteers.

Many sections of the community participate, from local school groups including the Irrawang High School Drum Corps, returned and serving Australian Defence Force personnel including the 335SQN Air Force Cadets, community groups such as Williamtown Rotary and Medowie Lions, Medowie Rural Fire Service,

and individuals who feel motivated to contribute on Anzac Day. Mr Geoffrey Hamilton, President of the Rotary Club of Williamtown, told News Of The Area, “It was once again a huge success with our Club supplying over 350 sausages and coffee with a nip of rum to overcome the early start.”

“The morning was very well organised, the march a very moving gesture, the service flawless and we at Williamtown Rotary were very proud to be part of the proceedings.”

GREYHOUNDS have featured in the media in the past year due to government racing restrictions, and then political back flipping, resulting in the spotlight being put on this breed.

April was Greyhound Adoption Month and rescue organisations have been promoting the benefits of adopting or fostering this breed.

Medowie residents are not unfamiliar with greyhounds, with many owners of racers and retired racers residing in the community.

Ms Mel Taylor combines her love of cats with owning her gorgeous hound, Buddy.

She is also the coordinator

of Cat Rescue Newcastle and shows that, contrary to popular misconceptions, greyhounds can live peacefully with their feline friends.

Ms Taylor told News Of The Area, “Buddy fitted straight into family life with myself, young kids and cats.”

“I run Cat Rescue Newcastle, so we always have cats/kittens around, Buddy has helped with the rehabilitation and introductions of hundreds of cats and kittens over the years.”

“These cats can go to their new homes without a worry of dogs.”

Of the decision to adopt a greyhound six years ago, Ms Taylor said, “I saw an increasing need for

“I researched the breed and found them to be very suitable for my family.”

“They are quite different to what people think and unfortunately have not had a fair go.”

A Fiery Time

THE official date for the opening of the new Tilligerry Rural Fire Service Station has been set down for Saturday, 12 August.

With that in mind, perhaps it’s timely to cast our minds back through the decades of a somewhat fiery time for those unpaid volunteers involved in protecting us from the flames.

The Lemon Tree Passage Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade was formed in 1969 with the station being built by volunteer labour. It opened in 1972.

Boys as young as ten years of age were accepted as junior members and accredited by the Bushfire Council.

A Ladies’ Auxiliary acted as a backup for catering.

There were no active female firefighters in these times.

A falling out saw Tanilba members depart and build their own ‘bessa brick’ station at Tanilba.

As a fundraiser, locals were asked to ‘buy a brick’ for $2 and a red thermometer sign at Mallabula showed the building fund’s progress.

The station opened in 1981. Later, a violent storm unroofed the station and the walls collapsed.

Angel Gowns

ANGEL Gowns Mid North Coast and Angel Gowns Hunter Central Coast Inc. are two groups of volunteers who, by their skill, love and compassion, hope to touch the hearts of families who suffer the tragic loss of a baby through miscarriage, illness, prematurity or stillbirth.

The groups are run solely by volunteers who donate their time and skill to the

Port Stephens Council rebuilt it in brick and it reopened in 1990.

Burning off was seen as the key to firefighting as well as being a handy fundraiser.

Grateful property owners were only too keen to ‘kick the can’ after burn offs around their homes were done.

Bushfires were nowhere near as hot as they are today because the fuel levels were

kept as low as possible.

They still got away, however, and the most threatening occurred in November 1980 when a Tanilba bushfire jumped Mallabula and tore through Lemon Tree Passage to the water’s edge. No homes were lost.

Burn offs virtually ceased with the formation of the RFS, the development of

management plans and the removal of local control.

Our new station with its associated infrastructure will cost around $1,000,000.

Another $500,000 will be spent constructing our new roundabout at Tanilba Gates.

Port Stephens Council owns the freehold title to the old Lemon Tree Passage station.

It will be ‘recycled’ as an

arts and tourist information centre.

The current Tanilba site is leased from the State Government specifically for a fire station and the conditions need to be changed if it is to be used for any other purpose.

The Angel Gowns Mid North Coast group recently received over 70 bridal gowns from the Medowie and Tilligerry area in memory of Maggie Gill.

Genelle Ireland, Maggie’s grandmother, and her family, have been very supportive of the Angel Gowns project since its inception, never thinking they would need the use of

the services themselves as a family.

The founder of Angel Gowns Mid North Coast, Kym Cross, told News Of The Area, “In gifting our Angel Gowns, we hope to show these families that the community is filled with love and compassion for them, that they are not forgotten, that these babies are never forgotten.”

“It is often difficult for others to understand when a baby dies, no matter how

early or late in a pregnancy.”

“These babies have been named, their lives planned for, the growing baby has developed as a person and the life of that baby has already been imprinted into the hearts and souls of their family,” she said.

National Trust’s Australian Heritage Festival

By Heather SHARP THEMED Having A Voice, the Raymond Terrace and District Historical Society’s public event was part of The National Trust’s Australian Heritage Festival, attracting several hundred people.

Over $1000 was raised on the day to assist the Society’s activities, which features the Sketchley Cottage, a 19th Century timber dwelling.

A rich program featuring people from the local area filled the day’s activities.

This included poetry by Mark Wilson, the reading of World War I soldier letters, authors John Gillam and Yvonne Fletcher telling the personal story of Arthur Keppie and his fiancé Ethel Webb, and a letter by a Turkish school student from the Two Trenches, One Letter project.

Peter Kafer and Zona Kelly were the artists in residents for the day.

Also in attendance was The Newcastle Choir who entertained the attendees

with a Songs My Grandmother Sang repertoire.

The Historical Society’s member, Ms Moira Saunderson contributed by relating her experiences in researching local history.

Two local History teachers, Mr Joel Ross and Ms Melanie Innes, who is also a PhD history education candidate at the University of Newcastle; and yours truly; fulfilled the theme of Having A Voice by reading letters by World War I soldiers from the local area.

Of the experience, Ms Innes told News Of The Area, “Although I am not a stranger to public speaking, I really felt a sense of community, embracing our shared history.”

“I feel that events such as these are increasingly important, as our lives become busy and hectic, people in our community are at risk of losing the connection to local history.”

Tracy Goossens said: “My greyhound is an interesting case. He is the only dog in the country (to my knowledge) that was removed from the mother at

birth (she had a c-section). I was vet nursing at the time and he was left for euthanasia due to his compromised state at birth. I struck a deal with the owner and he was hand raised by me, and was still recognised by Racing NSW for registration as a racing dog!”

My son is obsessed with becoming the next School Captain at the local primary school. The votes don’t happen until the end of the year, but he is already fine-tuning his speech, walking up and down the corridor, reciting the central points.

I know he won’t be able to deliver on many of the promises, which become more outlandish each week. How do I tone him down?

You know, if there’s one thing I have learnt about politics in the past year, it’s that anything is possible. Even if your son doesn’t seem like School Captain material, even if he’s only participated in a reality-style pantomime and not once shown an interest in the finer machinations of the school, the role could end up his.

I wouldn’t be too worried about the distortion of facts in his speech.

Elections are often won, or lost, on spin or lack thereof.

Say, for example, he is promising lemonade in the bubblers, or free-dress every Friday.

These are fairly innocent undertakings sprouted by many before him.

But if he is perhaps thinking about getting rid of Sick Bay, because it is draining school funds, or if he is considering building a border wall between the infants and primary sections, you could be encouraging a catastrophic trajectory.

And if, when the girl before him in the speeches makes a good point and he says “lock her up, she’s been using school computers to send personal emails” there is definitely a concerning pattern.

If he asks to see the last School Captain’s birth certificate (because he believes his predecessor was born in Kenya and therefore ineligible) you need to engage professional help.

Man arrested following pursuit POLICE have arrested a man after a pursuit in the Port Stephens area.

About 6.30pm Saturday 29 April 2017, police were patrolling Nelson Bay Road, Williamtown, when they sighted a man wanted on warrants in a Ford Falcon.

After losing sight of the vehicle for a short time, police sighted the vehicle again on Cabbage

Tree Road, Tomago, and initiated a police pursuit.

The pursuit travelled along the Pacific Highway and New England Highway, before being terminated on John Renshaw Drive, Beresfield due to dangerous driving.

The vehicle was later located abandoned on Queens Wharf Road, Morpeth.

A search of the surrounding area was conducted with assistance from the Dog Unit, along with officers from Central

Hunter and Port Stephens Local Area Commands.

A 27-year-old man was arrested after being located nearby in a rural farm shed.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment to a laceration to his arm.

The man remains under police guard at hospital.

Charges are expected to be laid at a later date.

MidCoast Council resolved on 19 April 2017 a proposal to establish an alcohol-free zone (AFZ) within the area bordered by Marine Drive, Maxwell Street and Myall Street, with “a line” connecting Myall Street to Marine Drive, Tea Gardens; and to re-establish the AFZ in Hawks Nest, for four years commencing 1 July 2017. Helicopter Spraying of Bitou Bush Herbicide spraying of Bitou Bush on headlands and beaches in Booti Booti and Myall Lakes National Parks between Forster and Hawks Nest will be

This position holder will provide an extensive range of assistance and support to the elected Board through the day-to-day management of the Karuah LALC’s affairs in accordance with delegated authorities; the provision of sound and accurate advice and the implementation of the Board’s resolutions in a timely and appropriate manner.

The successful applicant will have demonstratable knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (ALRA) (or the ability to rapidly acquire), the capacity to interpret and implement legislation and sound communication skills.

Organisational and management experience is essential together with an understanding of accounting practices and principles. A sound knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal issues would also be required.

By Rachael VAUGHAN IT is unfortunate that many people only think of helmets, massive shoulder pads and Jarryd Hayne when they think about the game of American Football or Gridiron.

The average Australian doesn’t give themselves the opportunity to learn about a game that requires a similar skill set to the sports they love such as Rugby League, Rugby Union and Aussie Rules, in order to play.

However, there is a group of Gridiron fanatics that can not only talk the talk about America’s most commercially successful sport, but they walk the walk as well.
