D3 Grade team is organising the event to help raise essential funds in support of the McGrath Foundation.

More specifically, they hope to help to place specialist McGrath Breast Care Nurses wherever they’re needed.

According to Cancer Australia, Breast Cancer is estimated to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer in 2018 among both men and women, with an estimated one in eight women being be diagnosed with breast cancer by their 85th birthday.

McGrath Breast Care Nurses give peace of mind to families through expert knowledge, personal care and genuine compassion.

They heard a loud noise, like someone was revving their engine. The next thing they knew a car had ploughed straight through their bedroom wall.

The corner property which is situated on a hill sits well above the level of the roundabout, however the gradient of the hill, nor the tree which the driver uprooted was enough to stop the car.

The driver had been travelling west along Port Stephens Drive.

Eyewitnesses reported that the elderly driver apparently suffered a blackout moments prior to the incident.

Fire, Police and Ambulance were all in attendance and whilst the driver was taken to hospital in an Ambulance, it was a lucky escape for all with no serious injuries suffered.

Container Search Continues SIX months after the YM Efficiency container disaster off Port Stephens, and still the search continues for missing cargo and containers.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has now contracted a Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROUV) to join the search operation.

So far three targets of interest have been located and imaged.

A spokesperson for the AMSA reported “The ROUV was deployed close to shore for testing just south of Fingal Bay at the known location of a target identified during the shoreline clean-up operations.”

“The ROUV identified a

number of tyres and what could be the remains of a shipping container in about 20-30 metres of water.”

“ROUV proceeded to an area about 32 kilometres east of Redhead, in the vicinity of the location where the containers were lost from the

ship.”

“The ROUV successfully located two containers on the seafloor and was able to image the container numbers.”

The containers are damaged but appear to be intact and resting in about 120 metres of water.

Rotary To Improve George Reserve

PRESIDENT of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, Ina George is jumping for joy after receiving the news that the Club has secured a grant of $35,500 to improve George Reserve on Soldiers Point Road at Salamander Bay. Ina has a family connection to the reserve and is passionate about improving it for the thousands of visitors

who use the park each year.

The Club is a recipient of the 2018 Community Building Partnership Grant.

The Reserve is a District Park and is in need of an upgrade. The funds will be used to remove some very old seating, place a large concrete pad and install 4 sets of tables and chairs under cover seating.

will go ahead under the SRV brought forward from 2026 to 2019-20, which will hopefully replace the toilet block and install some bright colourful play equipment.

“This will be a joint project between Salamander Bay Rotary Club and Port Stephens Council,” she said.

These annual Grant programs provide much needed funding to local community groups and organisations to support vital work in their neighbourhoods.

In 2018, a total of $380,000 was secured for Port Stephens organisations of which $35,500 will go to improvements in George Reserve.

Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington MP said, “As a member of the judging panel for these Grants, I was pleased to support applications from all across Port Stephens.

“I’m very pleased to have secured $35,500 in funding for Salamander Bay Rotary Club to upgrade George Reserve.

“I thank the Club for their hard work and commitment to improving our community’s assets,” she said.

The ROUV assessments will continue over the coming weeks as weather conditions permit.

Water Wandering is an interpretation of the local waterways crucial to the Port Stephens wetland ecosystem from an aerial viewpoint.

Serpent is a mosaic art runs through a river side park in Raymond Terrace for all to enjoy.

Walk of Art profiles the local creative community by promoting the skills and talents of artists. Artists works have been chosen on their fit with the Nelson Bay ‘Vibrant Coastal’ cultural zone.

RUNNING for School Captain is a right of passage for year five students across the country.

St Brigid’s Raymond Terrace is no exception, however they do things a little differently.

They announce the 20 School Captains who are referred as the Parliamentary Leaders

at the annual End of Year Prize-giving Liturgy, after each candidate is given the opportunity to nominate themselves by completing a parliamentary portfolio.

This requires them to outline why they believe they would be a suitable candidate.

This information, along with their school record of behaviour and attitude towards their learning will

be used by the staff and the Principal to determine the candidates for election.

Successful candidates prepare a short speech to deliver to the voting students from Years 2-5 and teachers.

Students elected into these positions are expected to be model school citizens upholding the school rules at all times, whether at school, or participating in

YOU’RE never too old to be the star of a show.

Ms Jennifer Hollis, is a mature aged local Port Stephens artist.

For the past twenty years Jennifer has worked with water colour paints.

This was not her original passion and in fact prior to a workshop in the nineties, Jennifer believed that water colour paints where an easy option.

Ms Hollis told News Of The Area, “My belief about the median was dissolved and I found it challenging to work with water colours.”

The current Exhibition is entitled ‘A Gathering of Creatives’ and features a number of artists including Ms Hollis.

Our Not-So-Serious Bowlers

IN the Bay there’s plenty of serious business going on out on the bowling greens.

We have more than our fair share of Pennant winners and champions.

There’s also some not so serious bowlers who are all about fitness, fun and friendship.

One such Group are the Nelson Bay Travelling Marlins who are members and a SubClub of the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

News of the Area caught up with the Travelling Marlins while they were serving up sausage sandwiches at Bunnings Taylors Beach.

The Travelling Marlins are a friendly bunch of bowlers who get around the region and play bowls with other like minded teams, who they also host here in the Bay for fun days.

Bernadette Carroll a member of the Nelson Bay Travelling Marlins said, “We are just back from a trip to the Central Coast, and it is actually all about fun.”

The Travelling Marlins mixed bowlers fund raise to subsides their trips and

support the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

They travel to destinations such as Denman in the Hunter Valley for games of bowls.

This group of bowlers would be happy to welcome new members, it only costs $10 to join the Nelson Bay Travelling Marlins for life.

“It is not serious bowling it is more about fun and they often visit wineries prior to their matches,” she said.

WITH the warm weather comes all kinds of wildlife that we don’t commonly see during the winter months.

While some are cute and cuddly, others may give you an unexpected fright.

There is a common misconception that our resident legless reptiles, snakes, intend harm.

Local reptile enthusiast, Mr Dylan Stuart told News Of The Area, “The truth is they are shy animals that would rather avoid being seen and won’t go out of their way to hurt people.”

Another common belief is that where there are young snakes the mother must be close by.

Mr Stuart said, “When snakes are born they are completely on their own.

They don’t stay by their mother’s side they are completely independent.”

Port Stephens has an active snake population with Diamond Pythons, Red-Bellied Black, Eastern Brown, Marsh and Green Tree snakes among the most

A snake’s first priority is to seek shelter to avoid confrontation.

If a snake feels threaten it will defend itself.

Most bites occur when people try killing the snake or remove it without proper handling training.

It is highly illegal to kill any snake as they are protected in NSW by the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

Local snake relocation worker, Mr Justin Lantry said, “It would be ideal to move persons and pets away and monitor from a safe distance.

Get photos if possible as it helps with identification, and

contact a catcher for advice or relocation.”

“Staying calm and remaining still will result in the snake staying calm as well” Mr Lantry said.

Keeping a clean and tidy yard is the simplest way to reduce the chance of unwanted reptilian visitors during the warmer months.

Future Leaders

FUTURE leaders are top on the agenda at the end of the schooling year.

Medowie Public School announced their 2019 School Captains on Friday 14 December at the Annual School Presentation day.

India Cockle, Emilee Hicks, David Fisher and Lachlan Vaughan were all smiles when presented with their Captain Badges.

India maintains an enthusiastic extracurricular schedule with dance and gymnastics.

She is particularly passionate about creative writing, always

demonstrating an insightful maturity.

Emilee’s extracurricular passion is soccer as a member of the Emerging Jets Academy.

In her spare time she enjoys riding horses, and always embraces new challenges.

David is an avid reader and often can be found with a book in his hands.

He also loves to draw and is considered an expert on Star Wars by his many friends.

Lachlan is an enthusiastic member of the school’s Creative and Performing Arts curriculum.

He is actively involved in both dance and choir, and also excels in public speaking.

Hunter River High School captains candidates were

required to be members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) and regularly participate within whole school activities.

As part of the election process students were required to submit an Expression of Interest to the SRC coordinator, to be reviewed by the selection panel.

The 2019 School Captains are Megan Snow and Dylan Eyb. Megan Snow received Dux of Year 11, 2018.

Dylan Eyb received 1st in Geography and 2nd in Business students 2018.

While the Vice Captains for 2019 are Kane Chester and Josh Kirkpartick.

State Age Swimming

ROBERT Stanley (17) celebrated a stellar week in his swimming career recently.

From 14 to 19 December 2018 he attended the NSW State Age Swimming Championships at the Sydney Olympic Pool.

Robert, as part of the Stroud Seals Swim Club, competed in the 17 years 100m breast and 200m breaststroke. Robert obtained a Personal Best (PB) of 0.5 seconds in his 100m breaststroke and finished 11th.

In the 200m breaststroke, Robert made the final and finished 8th in NSW for the 17 years age group.

Also competing at State Age was Medowie swimmer Grace Gray (15).

Grace competed in three events at State Age and Coach Michael Abel was pleased with her times.

Raff Francisci (15) competed in 4 events and swam PBs in three of them.

Notably, Raff swam a PB in his 50m freestyle to obtain a national qualifying

Beach and so many pieces of wood that I believe they say need to recycle back into the water but it makes it dangerous for little ones, for boats, and even for some who may not dispose of their ‘items’ in the correct places.

Several items have been found over the years

in amongst the wood and sticks on the beach and the grass attracts the bees which Is dangerous for young children playing on the beaches mainly north of the boat ramp.

Jacki Ashpole said, “My intention for 2019 is to create a simpler life, not be tied down with time consuming things that just cause undue stress.”

“So we are going to minimise our family and business life.”

A YOUNG female rugby union player from Nelson Bay has won gold by playing in the Australian Girls team that won the World School Sevens Championship in New Zealand last month.

Maya Stewart, aged 18, plays for The Waratahs Rugby Union Club in the local competition, has been in outstanding form during the 2018 season.

The World School Sevens is an annual rugby tournament that showcases the best Under 18 Rugby Union Sevens talent from around the world. The 2018 Championship for girls and boys was played at Pakuranga United Rugby Club grounds in Auckland last Friday and Saturday (14-15 Dec).

The Australian Girls defeated New Zealand Condors 29-5 in the final after accounting for Japan 35-12 in the semi-finals. The Girls team was undefeated in the championships while Australian Boys took bronze.
