Tree concerns for Lemon Tree Passage woman

PORT Stephens mayor Bruce MacKenzie has fired a final salvo at some in the council over an issue that has been at the forefront of his 40 years tenure – the removal of dangerous trees.

Mayor MacKenzie said he had received more calls of complaints about trees than any other issue from residents living in fear of their lives or property.

As a parting shot this week, the retiring mayor was again scathing in his criticism of officers after learning of the fate of Lemon Tree Passage resident Vicki Ross.

“I have seen many instances from Shoal Bay to Medowie of dangerous trees on council land, and this is one of the worse,” Mayor MacKenzie said.

“This resident [Ms Ross] is frightened for her life, she has already had tree limbs

Back Pain Electric Treat

q Glen Curry – new implant gives hope for the future.

BACK pain was the last thing local butcher Glen Curry wanted after taking control of the family business from his parents Ron and Margaret.

A sports injury many years ago has seen him greatly restricted in what he can do and he is in pain for lengthy periods of time.

“I’ve tried pain killing

drugs, spinal blocks, physio, massage and other treatments but none has given any lasting improvement in my condition,” he said.

“It’s just so frustrating trying to run a business and relying on others to do my job.”

Hope however is at hand with Glen taking part in a trial which may give relief from his debilitating

problem.

“I’ve recently been given an implant which stimulates muscles on either side of my spine.

“It works by electrical pulsation and to activate the unit I wave a magnetic device across the targeted area.

“The procedure lasts for two thirty minute periods each day while I’m at rest,” he said.

The good news is that the trial is free as it is part of a research study by a private company.

It is still too early to judge if it has been beneficial.

High Tea Raises Needed Funds

DIGNITY was the theme of a recent high tea held at Soldier’s Point.

Over 50 people attended the charity event, raising money for Share The Dignity, a group that aims to ensure that every woman in Australia has access to sanitary products.

Ms Keely Cotter, from the Williamtown RAAF base,

organised the high tea, raising an impressive $1805 on the day from a combination of raffle tickets and entry price.

In addition, in excess of 160 packages of sanitary products were donated, going towards the aim of ensuring that women who are not in a financially strong position do not have to have the added burden of not using hygienic products.

Share The Dignity is an

organisation that has gained an increased profile in recent years, and many workplaces offer drop off points to receive regular donations.

Ms Cotter has collection points at the RAAF Base and Anytime Fitness Salamander Bay until the end of August.

When asked what it was like to see so many people supporting the high tea, Ms Cotter told News Of The Area, “I was overwhelmed

by the generosity on the day. Especially the gents who brought along sanitary products.”

“Funds raised and products donated go towards projects supporting women in need, providing dignity when dealing with their period and funding projects.”

Many of the women in attendance at the Saturday afternoon event were from

the Williamtown RAAF Base, keen to support a fellow member’s fundraising efforts.

Ms Lia Ross from Petit Fours High Tea provided the catering for the event.

Ms Cotter said she was motivated to hold the charity event after hearing about Share the Dignity through her sister-in-law’s post on Facebook.

She said, “I was shocked

to read about women and young girls who were forced to use paper towels or toilet paper when they had their period.”

“There were even stories of young girls having to miss school when they had their period because their mum couldn’t afford sanitary products.”

I recently got married and my friend bought me a beautiful set of champagne glasses. The problem is, they are the exact set that I gave her for her wedding three years ago. At first I thought it was just coincidence, but then I found the note I had written, tucked between the lining of the packaging, wishing her everlasting happiness.

When you get married, you inevitably get two or more of the same thing.

You know the drill: three rice cookers, two sets of cutlery, three irons (how rude), seven sets of dinner plates, and on it goes. It is ludicrous, but somehow more socially acceptable than those brides who have a gift registry at an upmarket store where the only thing you can afford is a gold-plated toothpick.

Or how about the couples who make up catchy little jingles that say having you at the wedding is more than enough, but then the small print comes, complete with their ‘we’re going to Europe’ account number.

Perhaps what you should do is invite your friend around for some friendly champers, cheese and crackers, and when you are both a bit sloshed, you can tell her just how much her message meant to you.

REGARDING the story in edition 24 August 2017, ‘Tributes for Medowie’s Gwen Downey’.

Knowing Gwen for the past 35 years as a neighbour and friend, I watched her raise her children to be decent and like-minded members of the community.

Gwen was genuinely interested in every person she met, a

beautiful lady who made you feel special.

Phil and Gwen shared a passion for family and community values which sadly is missing in today’s society.

I pray for Gwen who was taken too soon and Phil and the extended family who will miss her always.

15th Longriders family fun day

In its 15th year, the family fun day will take place at the Tomago Bowling and Sports Club on 9 September.

With a growing number of Medowie and Tilligerry members, the Longriders motorcycle club are well known around Port Stephens for their annual family fun day, where they

fund raise for a new charity each year.

This year, the Longriders have chosen a worthy cause to support: Rush Youth Mentoring.

Rush Mentoring supports local high schools by placing a significant role model in a young person’s life.

The volunteer mentor supports the young person with social, emotional and in some cases academic support so that they can achieve their full potential, through weekly sessions.

The mentors are dedicated men and women aged over 18 years old, from all walks of life.

They are willing to build

a relationship of trust and will encourage young people to achieve their personal best while providing support to negotiate life’s challenges.

Rush Mentoring does not receive government assistance or funding to run their program, so subsequently rely on the kindness of community groups to help them to continue the wonderful job they do for young people.

The day will commence at 11am and run through until around 4pm.

A family friendly atmosphere is promised, with plenty of activities for the kids as well as the older kids.

Elvis the mechanical bull will be there, with prizes up for grabs, as well as face painting, jumping castles, a petting zoo and pony rides.

Budge, from Longriders CMC told News Of The Area, “We are looking forward to another fantastic year, with something for everyone, and raising lots of funds for a really worthy cause.”

“We have 13 bike show categories for the bikes this year, raising it from 10 last year, with a people’s choice for the cars.”

“Everybody is welcome to come along and spend the day catching up with old friends you might not see from year to year, and all for a great cause,” he said.

‘A Hidden Gem’. This was how grey nomad Lynne McDowell described Lemon Tree Passage when News Of The Area asked her impressions of the place.

Lynne, with her partner Geoff Simmons, took two weeks from their home base in Yarra Valley (Victoria) to travel to Queensland with their caravan.

“Why Lemon Tree?”we asked.

“I’d heard of the place,” Geoff said.

“We decided to give the main tourist towns a miss and seek out the unspoilt quiet out-of-the-way coastal villages. Lemon Tree was one of them.”

With this in mind, it was suggested that they take ‘The Lakes Way’ on their journey north and call in at Seal Rocks.

Word of mouth and the upgrade of Lemon Tree waterfront facilities has seen a massive rise in the number of day trippers and

people seeking somewhere to holiday or to retire to from the rat-race of the cities.

On top of this, the wildlife and native flora also draw visitors to the nature trails which now circle the peninsula.

Koalas, dolphins, sea eagles, pelicans and even sea turtles can be found around the foreshore.

NEWS Of The Area this week would like to recognise one of its original reporters for its Medowie & Tilligerry version. Simone Johnson, has announces her decision to tackle a new opportunity.

Simone started writing for News Of The Area one day after her 19th birthday, when the Medowie paper was being advertised as ‘the new paper in town’.

At the commencement of her employment with News Of The Area, Simone was doing a degree in communications, and was majoring in journalism.

She was also volunteering at 2NURFM, writing news bulletins and making voice grabs for radio.

She then picked up a law degree, changing to a double

degree of communications and law.

Simone has spent the last six months working three jobs with News Of The Area, the local Salt Ash BP and a variety store job, all while studying for her double degree.

In June, she was accepted for an internship at ABC Newcastle from a field of over 160 people.

Simone will commence this internship in October.

Simone was then selected

by Southern Cross Austereo this month, as one of fourteen of 160 applicants to go to their media bootcamp in Newcastle.

At the boot camp, participants took part in in-studio news reads, mock breakfast shows and reading advertisements on air. Simone should find out

within the week if she was also successful in gaining a position with the Southern Cross Austereo Network.

Simone started interning at radio station 105.3 NewFM this week, working with the breakfast producer to produce content for their daily show, which she is hopeful will turn into a full time job.

Simone told News Of The Area, “I am extremely thankful to N.O.T.A. for giving me my first opportunity to be a paid journalist at just 19 years of age.”

“I’m excited for my future, and hope to do some form of content production or media law.”

“I am not completely set on where I want to end up, I just want to take all of the opportunities as they come,” she said.

Australian Scout Medallion winners

The Australian Scout Medallion is only awarded to a select group of individuals who have gone above and beyond the expectations of a regular scout.

TWO Medowie Scouts have added the Australian Scout Medallion to their list of achievements.

Jade Keher and Kalum Campbell from 1st Medowie Scouts were the deserving recipients.

The Australian Scout Medallion is only awarded to a select group of individuals who have gone above and beyond the expectations of a regular scout.

To be eligible for the

medallion, scouts must participate in the Green Cord challenge, which is a range of activities to do with advanced camp craft.

Recipients must also fulfil two leadership components: a course and a major activity.

Jade and Kalum were both presented their medallions at their troop meet night by the region commissioner Bruce Leverton and the district scout leader Dennis Conroy.

For her leadership

project Jade organised and ran a cub camp for all the district cubs who were 10 years old, and covered their Scout linking badge, along with their First Aid level 2 badge work.

Kalum raised funds by selling his chickens eggs to cook a three-course dinner for the leaders that had helped him throughout his scouting journey.

This was his Australian Scout Medallion project to acknowledge the leaders for the time spent helping him,

Niland rates chances

By Charlie ELIAS DESPITE being listed number two on the Central Ward ticket, long time Medowie resident Ben Niland rates his chances of winning a seat on Port Stephens Council when voters got to the polls on 9 September.

The outspoken opponent to the Newcastle-Port Stephens merger proposal has joined aspiring mayor and incumbent councillor Steve Tucker’s team for the elections.

Mr Niland, who was recognised for his service to the Medowie community in the Port Stephens Annual Awards for 2017, is expected to take his seat on the council if Mr Tucker’s bid for popularly elected mayor is successful.

A proud local and volunteer community worker, Mr Niland has a long history in Port Stephens, moving to Raymond Terrace as a nine year old in 1989.

“I have owned property in Medowie since 1994 and have lived there except for a period in the mid-2000s when my work took me to regional NSW and to work with the UN in Afghanistan,” he said.

“I was part of the steering committee of the Medowie Sports and Community

Club which had a DA and funding approved in 2016 and I have also served on various council and sporting committees in Medowie.”

Medical Miracle

ANNE Lake is extremely fortunate that her astute and tenacious daughter, Nicole Sellick, assisted in a medical miracle.

Wracked with stabbing joint pain and her hands too sensitive to touch, Anne was fatigued and more or less bedridden.

She was in tears for most of the time and shuffled around the house.

She felt that she was dying.

Doctors could not diagnose her problem.

Nicole noted all of her mother’s symptoms and

discussed them with friends in her home town in the Southern Highlands. The word ‘myalgia’ kept cropping up so she Googled it along with associated medical conditions.

“I knew that Mum was a straight shooter and was worried that the medicos might be dismissive of her concerns,” she said. “I therefore returned to Lemon Tree and accompanied her to the doctor to back her up and to suggest what I thought the problem was,” she added.

The story has a very happy ending.

By Charlie ELIAS CENTRAL Ward councillor Chris Doohan, fresh from his first term on Port Stephens Council, says he is better for the experience and eager for a second stint.

Having ridden on the coat tails of popularly elected mayor Bruce MacKenzie in the 2012 election, Mr Doohan is relishing the opportunity to head his own Independent ticket that also includes ex-councillor Shirley O’Brien and Medowie’s Peter Smith.

The former RAAFie turned BAE employee says he is sick and tired of the naysayers and refuses to acknowledge those who talk of a dysfunctional council.

“We may have had some dysfunctional councillors, but this council achieved great things and has a financial record to be proud of,” the 47-year-old from Medowie said.

“In the past five years we have battled an unprecedented super storm, floods, bushfires and the proposed merger and emerged in good shape financially.

“Having said that, there is still much to do, and it is for this reason, coupled with a fear of what is driving some other candidates, I am back for another shot.”

“During this next term I will focus on roads, paths and parks across the entire ward from Boat Harbour/Anna Bay through the Tilligerry

peninsula to Medowie.

“I have been out doorknocking the area and roads and footpaths remain a priority for many residents.

“Of course costings and a harmony between the three wards needs to be taken into account, but it is my intention to chip away at these core issues for the benefit of the entire community.”

DAFFODIL day was celebrated nationwide last week, with awareness and funds being raised for cancer research through the NSW Cancer Council.

Cancer is a disease that affects every facet of the lives of the people it touches.

Medowie mother Lyndell Phillips knows only too well the toll cancer can take on the lives of a young family.

In December 2014, the then mother of two had surgery for what was initially thought to be a very large benign teratoma/cyst on her left ovary, after discovering the problem as a result of abdominal pain.

The mass was removed, along with her left ovary and tube.

In January 2015, Lyndell got the phone call that changed her life forever.

Lyndell told News Of The Area, “My surgery revealed that I had an extremely rare form of ovarian cancer, neuroblastoma of the ovary.”

“I remember being completely stunned, and I immediately thought the worst because my surgeon was unable to give me any insight as to what my future might hold, as this was the first case of this type of cancer he had ever seen.”

The week that followed involved lots of tests,

and an appointment with a medical oncologist who advised Lyndell that she needed an aggressive regime of chemotherapy, which she began on 26 January.

She needed six rounds, which required her to be hospitalised for five days at a time, with five to six hours of infusions each day with two different chemo drugs, which was then repeated every three weeks.

Lyndell said, “I had two small boys, one three and the youngest nine months, so as tough as the chemo was, the hardest thing was being away from them, and not having

the energy at home to do all of the things that were normal for us.”

“We relied heavily on family for support and help, and I lost all of my hair.”

Lyndell fought hard, and overcame this disease, and has been ‘all clear’ now for almost two years.

She was told it would be unlikely she could have more children due to her treatment, however late last year Lyndell and her husband found out they were expecting.

They now have a third healthy boy, who is now six weeks old.

In October, Emma will be taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer.

Right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia, with 600 children diagnosed with cancer every year.

Sadly, statistically three die every week.

Area that she is motivated to do the challenge for two reasons.

“Firstly, I’ve done a few charity rides and runs over the last few years and it’s an amazing feeling knowing you’re doing a little bit to help raise money for the cause, which in this case is cancer research for kids.”

“Every bit counts.”

“Secondly, I’m doing this for me too, because it is a personal challenge for me,” she said.

Emma loves cycling and says that she has made

some wonderful friends since she started.

Emma rides with a dedicated group of female cyclers, aptly name the ‘Pushy Ladies’.

They mostly ride for fun, encourage each other to have fun and improve themselves.

Emma told News Of The Area, “Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.”

“So doing this challenge, riding and raising funds to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute, will help them to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.”

“If you have a spare few dollars, please consider supporting my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve,” she said.

When the ladies first came together, it really was starting from scratch.

A few had played in a charity match together last year, which was their first real taste of playing football.

These ladies have an amazing attitude towards the game, and are a great support to one another on and off the field.

“They have made an incredible achievement to make it into the finals in there first year of playing together,” Tamara said.

“I am very proud of this team, they really are a great role models that exhibit true sportsmanship, we have watched many other ladies teams turn on each other during a game, but this bunch of ladies just seem to build each other up even if we are losing, they really are incredible.”

The girls were triumphant again this weekend in their semi final match, and will play again next weekend in the next round of semi finals, headed hopefully for a very successful end to their first season in the competition.

LADIES of Medowie who love rugby league need no longer sit on the sidelines, with the inclusion of a Raymond Terrace team in the Newcastle and Hunter Competition for Women.

Several Medowie ladies have joined the Raymond Terrace Ravens, during their first year in the competition, joining 13 other teams in the women’s division.

Of the 25 team members, 13 are mothers who have children that play for the Raymond Terrace Roosters Junior Rugby League Club, and who until now have really only been involved with football in the capacity as either club volunteers or parents supporting their children in their chosen sport.

Tamara Stewart from the Ravens told News Of The Area, “Our youngest player is 16, and even though there is a large age range, all the teammates get along extremely well, I think the wisdom and maturity is balanced out by the youthfulness and enthusiasm.”
