Wirreanda Public School acknowledges Harmony Day as a very important day on their calendar, as they embrace and celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity.

“Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 celebrated with many different activities, while Stage 2 and 3 held the Annual Harmony Day Feast,” she said.

The Harmony Day feast saw children bringing food from all different cultures and countries, and sharing the food together as a feast with everyone in the covered outdoor learning area.

Irrawang High School had a wonderful day as they celebrated Harmony Day/Close the Gap and ‘BULLYING NO WAY’ on the same day as a whole school in an inclusive, combined event.

School spokesperson Luella Fagan told News Of The Area, “A special assembly kicked off with Sgt Leanne Mann of the Port Stephens LAC addressing our students

on BULLYING NO WAY.” “Several student leaders also spoke about the importance and significance of Harmony Day and Close the Gap.” “Our Junior Drum Corps gave their first ever performance together followed by our Senior Drum Corps and Dance Ensemble,” she said.

Art works were created on the school quad, with students creating pieces with chalk that expressed their thoughts on the messages shared during the day.

Go Kindy at Salt Ash spread their Harmony Day over a number of days, so all children could be included, and labeled it their ‘Cultural week’.

Throughout the week, the children learned about different cultures and countries and where some people come from.

Each day children were able to dress up and the centre chef cooked meals to represent the country chosen.

Forty-year-old Jay Allen’s life changed eight years ago when he found a mole on his ankle that look unusual and kept rubbing on his work boots and bleeding.

Almost overnight, he went from being a typical Aussie bloke, husband and dad, to being a cancer patient, when the mole was diagnosed as a melanoma that had spread to his lymph nodes.

Melanoma is the number one cancer killer of Australians aged 20 to 39.

Jay is a survivor, but he’s on a mission now to help others.

their own experiences with Melanoma were encouraged to join him.

When News Of The Area met Jay in Medowie, he was accompanied by Johnno Bensley, Karen Ryan who is on board the crew for the 29 days, Cathie MacMillan who was diagnosed with stage one

melanoma 20 years ago, and Michelle Muir and Corinne Leslie walking for Corinne’s father who passed away from Melanoma nine years ago.

We caught up with the mariners at a practice drill session in the Tilligerry Aquatic Centre’s heated pool.

They had previously undergone a course of instruction at their headquarters at the end of Whitbread Drive, Lemon Tree Passage.

EXCHANGE student programs can provide a rich learning experience for both student and host organisation.

Opening the wider world to young people is often a key purpose for exchange programs, with attendance at school and key cultural events a regular marker of the students’ experiences.

The Rotary Youth Exchange is known internationally as being a sponsor of high quality exchange programs between countries.

Currently on exchange from the small European landlocked country, Switzerland, Fabia Baumgartner is in Australia for 12 months, including six months in Medowie.

WIRREANDA Public School held their annual Cross Country event this week.

News Of The Area was compelled to share the event with our readers when a number of people individually sent not only requests over our news desk to cover the event, but also emails and calls after the event to share their experiences and praise the organisers.

Principal Philippa Young told News Of The Area, “We were so pleased with all our wonderful students who gave the event their very best and participated with excellent behaviour.”

“Our staff and volunteers once again held a very successful event.”

Children completed an obstacle course within the school grounds, and a lap around the exterior school fence.

Attendance and participation levels in the event were at an all time high, and a lot of fun was had by all the students.

A parent representative volunteer told News Of The Area, “I am so impressed with how the event was run.”

“The kids had so much fun and were encouraged to be active and participate to their own best ability.”

“The staff, teachers and volunteers were so positive and genuinely excited for the children participating, it was really lovely to watch them cheering the kids on as they crossed the finish line,” she said.

The committee is now planning the next year’s activities for the club, which currently has 63 members.

These activities will include the monthly meetings with guest speakers, lunches at various venues and outings to local places of interest.

A major event for the club each year is the Birthday Lunch, which will take place in July when the Medowie Combined Probus Club turns 14.

Over the three days, a total of 41 speakers gave talks to over 1,200 attendees.

The speakers in attendance are some of the people regarded as the world’s greatest entrepreneurs, business owners, marketing coaches and success icons.

“This experience was invaluable.”

Funding under the NSW Local Sporting Grants program MEMBER for Port Stephens Kate Washington was pleased to support the applications of eight local sporting groups for funding under the NSW Local Sporting Grants program.

The eight groups from across Port Stephens will share $50,000 which will be used to purchase equipment, upgrade facilities or compete in competitions.

“Congratulations to each of the successful applicants. This funding will boost participation in local

sports and assist local clubs facilitate access to sport,” Ms Washington said.

Among the list of recipients was Port Stephens Outrigger Club who received $5,000 for the purchase of safety equipment and an equipment storage box.

Medowie Little Athletics Centre received an upgrade of the canteen at Kindlebark Oval to the value of $2,800.

Port Stephens Sports Taekwondo received $5,000.

“Local sporting groups do fantastic work in our community – keeping

people active and bringing people together,” Ms Washington said.

“I thank all the hardworking volunteers at the clubs who contribute so much to our communities. I am pleased to support their efforts.”

TANILBA resident Ian Downs has recently been honoured by the unveiling of a bronze bust in recognition of his dedicated service as principal of the New England Girls’ School.

The private school, which was founded in 1895, commissioned renowned

Ian finished a career spanning some fifty years with four years as principal at the boarding school.

He then switched to The King’s School at Parramatta where he became Director of

Deliver Fido the poodle to your veterinarian buddy before you go away for two weeks because he clearly loves dogs.

They’ll get the message. And if they don’t, maybe you need to acquaint yourself with some new, more astute, friends.

A SPECIAL new Yoga class is in full swing in Medowie, and the children participating are loving it.

Children who normally would find it difficult to focus due to ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder, and ODD literally walked in, joined the yoga circle and although shy at first, joined in and began chatting with Yoga teachers Aimee and Gavin.

Rachael Corrigan, from Hunter Connect, told News Of The Area, “When I approached Aimee and Gav from Medowie Yoga about the possibility of running a yoga class for children with varying autism diagnoses and their siblings, Aimee’s enthusiasm was incredible, never once was it ‘how are we going to do this?’ it was ‘Let’s do it’.”

Hunter Connect Families is about supporting the whole family, as siblings often feel left out with parents and carers focusing a lot of their time on the child with the diagnosis due to the hectic nature that is living with a child on the spectrum.

With a donation received, Hunter Connect has been able to run this program at no cost to the families.

Rachael said, “We have five children with varying diagnoses from Autism Spectrum Disorder, Global Developmental Delay, ODD, ADHD and the rest of the

Mother of four-year-old Stephen, Lynda O’Donnell, told News Of The Area, “This has been an amazing experience, not only for my son but for his siblings and for me as a mother. My son has come out of his shell so much during these classes; he has now found enjoyment

in yoga and loves leaving the house to join in.”

What makes this improvement extra important for Stephen is that prior to attending the Yoga class, Stephen was having trouble leaving the house, often resulting in a meltdown.

Rachael said, “This week I watched the group arrive, and here comes Stephen, leading his family and telling them to

hurry up as he was all smiles, eager to get into yoga.”

“Once inside, he chose his yoga mat and put it right next to Gav’s and began chatting with Gavin.”

“It was simply amazing,” she said.

Seemingly simply experiences like this is what the program is all about.

The rugby club hosted a family friendly night, with jumping castles, face painting, games of rugby, raffles and games at half time and food galore.

There were two games on the night: firstly the highly anticipated Medowie Old Boys versus the Terrace Uglies match, then the main event of Medowie Marauders versus Cessnock.

Mighty Oaklan

WIRREANDA Public School held their school cross country event last week, and you would be hard pressed to find a more excited set of parents than those of Oaklan Reed as he crossed the finish line.

Oaklan has a very rare metabolic disease called Mucopolysaccaridosis type 2 (MPS) Hunters Syndrome.

Ten boys in Australia are diagnosed, and there are less than 1000 diagnoses in the world.

Oaklan’s condition means his body doesn’t produce an enzyme.

One of the few treatment options is Enzyme Replacement therapy where every week the children must

go to hospital.

For Oaklan, this meant attending Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney to have the enzyme administered intravenously at over $10,000 a treatment.

Oaklan started this treatment once he was diagnosed, but it doesn’t treat the damage or progression of the disease to the brain.

Only the second option, a Bone Marrow Transplant, could do that, so a transplant was decided as the best option to save any damage to Oaklan’s brain.

Oaklan and his family put their time together on hold, and he and his mother moved moved to Westmead Children’s Hospital in April 2015 for four months of isolation in the ward and

“They are cute, but don’t be fooled into giving treats that might be bad for them.”

Chocolate is never appropriate for dogs.

All types of chocolate contain a toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, heart problems, seizures and even death.

Xylitol is one most people may not have heard of, simply because it is an additive in

some good laughs and merriment with the crowd.

The main match of Medowie Marauders versus the Cessnock Greyhounds was closely fought, but eventually saw Medowie come out on top 12-7.

Marauders player, John Atama, told News Of The Area, “We had a great crowd,

The disease affects all children differently.

For Oaklan, his mobility is different from most kids, his joints and bones don’t move like others, he get sick

The Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association wishes to advise that the following traffic and parking arrangements have been approved by MidCoast Council for the holding of the ‘Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras’ on Saturday 8 April 2017 between 6am and 7pm.

• The temporary closure of the Hawks Nest Village Square (previously known as the mall) • The temporary closure of Tuloa Lane between the western side of the eastern carpark and the western side of the western carpark off Yamba St • Barricading of four parking spaces in the Booner St service road at the southern end of the Village Square • Barricading of the entrance to the western car park off Yamba St These temporary closures are required to ensure the safety of the public during the holding of the ‘Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras’. Important Public Notice Wild Dog and Fox Control The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) in cooperation with the Bulahdelah and District Wild Dog Control Group, NSW Forestry Corp, MidCoast Council and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking an annual 1080 wild dog/fox baiting and trapping program within Myall Lakes and Ghin-doo-ee National Park. The control program will use a combination of 1080 ejectors and trapping methods.

The 1080 program will take place from Friday 20 March 2017 to Monday 1 May 2017.

The use of 1080 ejector baits and trapping techniques are being conducted as part of a broader dog and fox control program, to lessen the potential impacts on neighbouring property and biodiversity values.

Warning signs will be erected on the main access tracks where the baiting is undertaken.

All neighbours and people using the parks are reminded domestics pets are not permitted in National Parks.
