MEDOWIE Lions this week celebrated the centenary of Lions Club in Australia, with a special unveiling of what was affectionately named ‘Plaque in the Park’.

The Lions Club originated in the US city of Chicago in 1917 thanks to an idea by an insurance agent named Melvin Jones. In essence, Jones believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.

The first Australian Lions Club was formed in Lismore in 1947 thanks to the efforts of William R. Tresise.

At the time, Tresise was the National President of Apex, but was nearing the Apex retirement age of 40.

with a former Lions President in the US, Tresise was introduced to the Lions Club and their ethos.

Upon his return to Australia, Tresise used his considerable powers of persuasion to inspire

several businesses and professionals in his hometown of Lismore to found Australia’s first Lions Club.

Medowie Lions have worked tirelessly to build up the gardens in the Lions Park, tending to the area, building new beds and planting shrubbery.

The new garden bed housing the centenary plaque is the product of the hard work of Medowie Lions members,

and certainly something to be proud of.

Medowie Lions Club president Lorraine Williams addressed the special guests and attendees, and told them, “We are so pleased to have you all here to celebrate the unveiling of this special plaque, and acknowledge the hard work of our Medowie Lions Club Men and Women.”

MEDOWIE Christian School students have taken out the ‘COWS’ public speaking comp.

COWS, which stands for Celebration Of Words, is an event run annually.

Medowie Christian School competed against St Philips Christian College Salamander Bay, who won the competition last year.

The Celebration of Word events celebrate a variety of public speaking, story and poetry writing, showcasing the skills of local young people.

This year was the third year of the competition.

The Lions Club of Raymond Terrace hosted the Public Speaking component of the COWs events.

Kimberley Osborne, Brian Tang and William Poley represented Medowie Christian School in the competition.

The students were asked to speak on three topics on the night, with each student from each group taking on a one particular topic respectively.

This year’s competition saw the students asked; “How would you manage illegal graffiti and rubbish dumping in our parks and open spaces? How would you encourage young people to use our parks

Humans Of The Area: Humans Jashim Uddin Of The Area

By Rachael VAUGHAN THIS week’s Human Of The Area story is an Irrawang High Teacher..

Mr. Jashim Uddin comes to our area from Bangladesh.

He has recently taken a job at Irrawang High School, as their new Primary Industries and Agriculture teacher, joining the school at the beginning of term four.

Mr Uddin has taught at several universities, firstly in Bangladesh and then Canada, where he gained his Masters and PhD in Entomology.

After also teaching at several schools, he decided that teaching school age children was much more fun than university students.

The cold weather in Canada finally proved too much for Mr Uddin and his family, so the decision was made to move to Australia where Dr Uddin already had family.

After contacting the NSW Dept of Education upon his arrival in Sydney, he was

University.

Mr Uddin’s first teaching position in Australia was at

Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, and then it was off to Broken Hill High School for seven happy years where he taught PI, Ag and Tech Mandatory.

The calling to be closer to Sydney and family has proved to be very beneficial for Irrawang High School and now they are lucky to have Mr Uddin on their staff.

His young family have settled in well in the local area and he is thoroughly enjoying the short commute, compared to his old daily commute of Sydney to Tuggerah Lakes.

Mr Uddin said, “We are loving our new home, and we are so happy here.”

“The children are so settled and loving their new school and community.”

“I love that I can stand out the back of my home, and with the right breeze, I can smell the ocean and am reminded of our lovely lifestyle,” he said.

Lue Fagan from Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “We are so pleased to have Mr Uddin and his wealth of knowledge and experience joining our team at Irrawang.”

“He is able to show the students first hand that anything can be achieved if you work hard at your goals and dreams.”

Responsible Pet Ownership

DETAILS of a distressing incident last week involving domestic animals on a residential street has reached News Of The Area reporters.

Now is a good time to remind residents of Port Stephens Council’s rules and regulations for pet ownership.

You are required to, at all times, have your animal on an adequate chain or leash.

The only exceptions to this are dogs exhibited at a show or engaging in obedience or agility trials or a dog secured in a cage or in an approved off-leash area.

In any of these exceptions, the animal must still always be under the effective control of their owner or other responsible person.

You are not permitted to walk more than four dogs at any one time in an on-leash or an off-leash area.

If your dog defecates in a public place it is an offence not to remove the faeces.

In relation to dog attacks, under the Companion Animals Act 1998 it is an offence for a dog to attack a person or another animal.

If a dog rushes at, attacks, bites or harasses or

chases any person or animal, whether or not any injury is caused to the person or animal, the owner of the dog or responsible person for the dog is guilty of an offence.

Should you witness a situation where an animal is attacked, or you are attacked yourself in Port Stephens, you should contact Port Stephens Council immediately.

If the attack occurs outside local council hours, you should contact your local police station.

Police officers are authorised officers of the Companion Animals Act 1998 and have a wide range of powers to deal with the owners or attacking animals, including seizure.

If your animal attacks another animal or person, you are liable.

Whilst certain protection is offered to owners when the attack happens on their own property, other forms of liability may still apply.

Owners of animals involved in attacks of varying degrees can be fined in a sliding scale up to $77,000.

Women Research Success

THREE women with Medowie connections were this week awarded Women In Research Fellowships at the University of Newcastle.

Doctors Bernadette Drabsch, Jessica Allen, and Heather Sharp (News Of The Area’s own contributor reporter) were each awarded worth $30,000 to pursue their research.

In an issued statement, Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Deborah Hodgson said, “The aim of this program is to focus support on promising female academics whose career progression has been impacted.”

“Through addressing barriers to progression for women, UON will support our outstanding academic talent to achieve their desired research outcomes,” Professor Hodgson said.

Dr Drabsch’s research will locate, record, analyse and disseminate the Aboriginal rock engravings and pictographs which will assist understanding of the earliest stages of Australia’s history.

In an interview with News Of The Area, Dr Drabsch encourages young women, saying, “It doesn’t matter where you live or what school you go to, all that matters is your attitude.”

“If you do your best, read lots of books, ask lots of questions and work your butt off you can achieve some pretty cool things.”

“To the women of Medowie I would say, challenge yourself mentally and see what you can

achieve.”

“I had two kids at primary school and a secretarial job when I made the decision to challenge myself and enrol in Open Foundation at the University of Newcastle.”

“It was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life and I’ve enjoyed every moment of the journey since.”

Tourism Shake up

DESTINATION Port Stephens members gathered to make changes to the constitution which will see representation on the board of management change from 2018.

The various categories represented on the board will be removed.

Destination Port Stephens member and tourism operator Frank Future of Imagine Cruises was voted onto the board with a margin of one vote beating Elyse Larkham of Moonshadow Cruises.

Frank Future told News Of The Area, “I believe that the greatest benefit to tourism in this region will be

the establishment of a World Heritage Listing for Port Stephens.”

He believes that the region can achieve the listing in the next few years.

“The other thing I would like to see is the establishment of an interpretive centre which focuses on nature, and our cultural history including the Worimi history,” he said.

Danny Eather of Destination Port Stephens told the forum, “Visitation numbers are heading in the right direction with overnight accommodation rates up by 51%.”

He believes that the release of a Trail Guide App for Port Stephens will help day visitors to explore

the region and encourage additional overnight stays.

“The launch of the Trail Guides interactive App will help people to discover the gems spread across the vast Port Stephens region,” he said.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “Destination Port Stephens has had a successful year marketing the area, and working to promote the key events in Port Stephens; as Council brings more events in coming years we will be looking for Destination Port Stephens to be right on board supporting the events and our community,” he said.

She encourages young women to pursue their dreams and not box themselves in, telling News Of The Area, “Women and young girls are often led towards certain careers because they are traditionally ‘good’ at them.”

“I was good at English and creative writing in primary school, but in high school I realised that I also enjoyed maths and chemistry.”

“I’m a chemical engineer and University lecturer, but I also still dance and perform with my beautiful Medowie dance studio (Studio2Stage).”

“You can be creative, be artistic, love pink things and puppies and be good at maths and engineering.”

“You can be whatever you set your mind to!”

Dr Sharp’s research investigates the teaching of difficult and controversial pasts, the influence of public history in teaching, history teaching pedagogies, and school curriculum.

Hunter Water responds: PFAS and Grahamstown Dam WITH concerns raised in recent weeks over the release of information that traces of PFAS chemicals have been found in Grahamstown Dam, News Of The Area sort to publish information obtained

by Hunter Water for you to see.

“PFAS chemicals being persistent in the environment is to be expected, give they

have a long legacy of use in a range of products over decades, so it is expected that traces would be found within the water supply.

“Hunter Water’s independent laboratory can detect PFAS at a concentrations of 0.002ug/L. This is the equivalent of one tenth of an eye drop in an Olympic sized swimming

pool, and well below the FSANZ health guideline limit of 0.07ug/L. “This guideline is set with the expectation of someone drinking water with 0.07ug/L everyday of their life (over a lifetime of exposure).

“The Grahamstown Dam catchment includes part of Medowie, which means runoff from an urban area

Jai says Goodbye

IT is with more than a tinge of sadness that long serving Lemon Tree pharmacist Jai Kumar has announced that he is moving on.

The business has been sold to Fady Victor and Fady Ewedar who will formally take over the reins on Wednesday, 1 November 2017.

The popular pharmacist gave his reasons thus: “After 30 years it was time for a break and to consider my future options,” he said.

“I’ll be having a well earned rest for a few months and then making a decision.”

For some 17 years Jai has run the business which has mushroomed due to the construction of a two storied medical practice next door.

He has always gone that extra distance for his clients and has been seen as as caring and compassionate professional.

On top of this he has given financial support to the local sporting clubs and represented Tilligerry Soccer Club in its all-age team.

In a farewell letter to the community he thanked his current and former staff as well as the locals for supporting him and stated that he has made many personal and enduring friendships over the time he has been with us.

A Hunter Water spokesperson told News Of The Area, “It’s important to note that the hydrology of the local area means it is impossible for surface or groundwater from the RAAF Base Williamtown to enter Grahamstown Dam.” “It would require water to literally flow uphill, even in wet conditions.”

“This fact is based on decades of modelling and backed up by regular testing,” they said.

“Advances in the

technology used to test local drinking water means as of June 2016 Hunter Water can now detect PFAS at levels 35 times below the safe threshold for drinking water.

“PFAS chemicals have been used in a wide variety of products, due to their waterproofing and stain resistant properties, since the 1950s in a range of common household products and specialty applications.

“This has included food packaging, non-stick cookware, fabric, furniture and carpet stain protection applications (ie, Scotchgard).

“Hunter Water has, as part of its testing regime, detected low levels of PFAS throughout the network.

“This is consistent with

research that has detected traces of PFAS in water throughout the country.

I’m not sure if my daughter is studying or not. Each time I go to her room, her head is buried in her laptop, but how do I know if she is learning her work, or engaging in other activities?

I have a teenage daughter, so I am cued in to some of the subtleties of distinguishing between study and social media.

You need to observe her facial expressions.

If she has a smirk on her face, she probably isn’t finding the constant of proportionality on the maths exam practice paper.

Instead, she is no doubt planning end-of-year parties or deciding which of 50 Snapchat filters she will use.

Is she sobbing about how maths sucks and has no value in the real world, or is she making peace signs into her phone and giggling?

The first is a sign of study (albeit frantic study the night before the exam rather than weekly revision).

The second is her careful planning for a 1970s-themed ‘gatho’ with 300 hyped-up teens at a house with no parental supervision.

Is she making comments such as, “Who cares about onomatopoeia? I mean, really, who cares about this stuff? Who even made up a word as insane as that?” or is she saying, “Mum, the Wifi keeps dropping out!”

The latter is a clear indication that social media activities are well and truly underway.

You need to get your daughter out of her bedroom and into the dining room.

Even though this will ruin your weekend, you will be able to furtively glance at her laptop at regular intervals, and ensure she is experiencing the same misery we all had to endure as teenagers.

PORT Stephens Council is working in collaboration with the NSW Government and six local councils to develop a coordinated strategy for economic growth in the Hunter.

The Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) will be used to inform regional development policy and identify actions that can be undertaken to support economic growth across Port Stephens, Cessnock, Dungog, Maitland,

Muswellbrook, Singleton, and Upper Hunter Shire council areas.

Jane Perrin, Council’s Economic Development Coordinator, says the strategy will guide the NSW Government’s budget allocation of $1.3 billion for regional NSW through the Regional Growth Fund.

“The regional strategy is designed to support greater access to grant funding and increased investment opportunities throughout the Hunter,” she said.

Ms Perrin says that in order to develop the strategy, feedback is being sought by Sapere Research Group.

“To promote economic growth in the Hunter, we need to hear from our local community, business and industry on what they think are the key opportunities and challenges facing industries,” Ms Perrin said.

“The survey only takes about 10-15 minutes and it is the best way for people to have their say on how this strategy can best encourage growth in our region, including key infrastructure priorities.

“Our commitment to safety has resulted in less workplace injuries, less severe injuries and a reduction in workers compensation premiums – saving Council over a million dollars per year.

“But it doesn’t end here.

We’ll continue to work hard to ensure that every worker goes home in the same, or better, physical and mental condition than when they arrived at work,” she added.

The 2017 SafeWork NSW Awards winners were announced last week at Doltone House in Sydney.

David Watmore from Blue Gums NHW spoke about the importance of NHW groups working together with a united goal.

Bill Hackney from Metford NHW spoke about the future development of NHW on a regional level, through a Hunter Region Development Day in 2018 and NHW Week plans for 2018.

Neighbourhood Watch is most certainly gaining popularity and support across an ever-growing area, which is wonderful to see.

Medowie NHW this month also elected their first officer bearers for the relaunched group.

Geoff Dingle was voted in as chairman, Libby Dingle as Secretary, Janine Moore as Treasurer and Jo Evans as Publicity Officer.

MP Kate Washington also attended the meeting and addressed attendees, commending them on their commitment to ensure the relaunch of Medowie NHW is a success.

Crime Statistics for the month again showed a distinct lack of reports being made in comparison to those discussed on a daily basis on social media

platforms, frustrating attendees.

The following crimes were recorded and reported for the Medowie area this month.

Four Assaults (NonDV), One Break And Enter of a dwelling, one serious injury crash, one Malicious Damage and one Powers to move on order, with a related person search.

M e d o w i e Neighbourhood Watch received financial support from News Of The Area and Sportz Cafe Medowie to distribute more than 400 balloons with an attached safety message to collection points in Medowie for residents to take and display on their homes if they wish to participate in Halloween.

Jo Evans, Medowie Neighbourhood Watch Publicity Officer, also created an online map of all Halloween friendly houses on Facebook group Medowie Mums, for parents to use to safely navigate homes with their children on Halloween.

New members are more than welcome to attend next month’s meeting, which will be held on 29 November at 7:30pm at the Medowie Community Centre.

Premiers Flying Visit to Bay WHEN the Premier takes the time to pop in we know that Port Stephens is definitely on the radar.

by Local Councillor and Liberal Party Branch President Jaimie Abbott, who took the opportunity to add a number of issues to the

State Government’s to-do list, including future protection of Mambo Wetlands, construction of Fingal Bay Link Road and infrastructure needs around housing growth in Medowie and the Tomaree Peninsula.

Delegates from all over NSW including Tweed, Dubbo and Monaro in the south visited Port Stephens where the party focused on a wide range of issues including delivering better public services and “keeping young people in the bush.

Members of NSW Parliament were also in attendance at the Conference including Minister for the

FOR Raymond Terrace student and Tilligerry resident Kaitlyn Eastley (14), aspirations of representing her country in a sport she loves is a dream come true.

The Hunter River High School, Year 8 student was duly recognised by the Australian Futsal Association for her outstanding performance at the 2017 National Club Futsal Championships held in Sydney and was selected to join the Australian Futsal U/15 Girls team to tour Brazil in August 2018.

Kaitlyn has been playing football (soccer) for five years for the Tilligerry Football Club, as a central defender.

A friend from school convinced her to try out for the school Futsal team.

“I wasn’t keen. She had to force me to join,” said Kaitlyn.

It was whilst representing Raymond Terrace Hunter River High School, that Kaitlyn was recognised by a representative scout and invited to attend the National Futsal Titles, being held in Sydney during the first week of the September/October school holidays.

Placed in one of three

under 15 age teams, Kaitlyn offered to replace a teammate that had been selected to go up an age group and now found herself in the position of goalie.

Stepping into fill this position was something the International selection panel recognised immediately, as she was chosen to join the national team for her outstanding performance as goalie.

The 2018 Brazilian tour will mainly be in Brazil’s eastern city of Belo Horizonte, where Kaitlyn will receive the highest quality Futsal coaching available in Brazil with various sessions at the Recreativo-Makenzie Futsal Training Centre.

She will also have the chance to watch a professional game and feel the atmosphere of the traditional Brazilian soccer games.

Kaitlyn is excited by the thought of travelling overseas. “I have travelled to Fiji before, but never on such a big trip like this.”

“It will be my first time flying a long distance without my family,” said Kaitlyn.

Fingal’s Fun at Forster

THERE’S no doubt that the members of Fingal Bay Probus Club enjoy getting together and over the past year Norman Martin has been their ‘Away trips organiser’.

Twenty-five members of the Club headed north to the Forster Resort, and Caravan and Cabin Park, to enjoy many of the pleasures that the district offers.

There was a barbecue, a wine tasting, pizza night with movies at the Resort itself were complemented by diners at a variety of restaurants, the motor bike museum at Nabiac, a restful river cruise, lunch at the Frothy Coffee Boatshed overlooking Wallis Lake and a visit to the Green Cathedral.

The Area, “Needless to say there was plenty of retail therapy to be had as well as all the great activities that Norman had arranged for the Club.”

Norman Martin said, “I reckon it was one of the best trips ever, I put the success of the event down to my wife, Rosamund’s pre-trip organising, and to the support given by the group.

“We are a great bunch of friends who are always ready to help and everyone even turned up on time for everything,” he said.

New estate to give an overhaul to underutilised land on Medowie Road

Encompassing an estimated 300 lots, many of the current unused land areas between the established “Pacific Dunes” estate will become a vibrant area complete with connecting cycleways along Medowie Road, an additional oval at Ferodale Park, and much needed public amenities in the centre of Medowie.

The development will not not be a simple addition to the township, it will be an enhancement.

Ross Muir, of Medowie BP, spoke to News Of The Area about the new estate.

“My family has been in Medowie now for over seventy years, and watched that land go from being

thriving orchards of stone and citrus fruit to where it is now with some small rural properties and the rest as derelict farmland.”

“That land will never be used as productive farming land again, so I’m so pleased to see it being used in this way.”

As former Port Stephens councillor Geoff Dingle told News of the Area, “The Medowie community went through considerable angst and large-scale consultation to establish the original Medowie Strategy based on infill development to preserve open space and establish future commercial and development areas.”

“The “Kingston Estate” proposal has been planned with the original strategy in mind.”

“The Kingston proposal is a great proposal, supported by appropriate connecting infrastructure, it will be a highly desirable location for

young families and I was very pleased to move the original motion to support it back in March 2015 with Councillor Chris Doohan,” he said.

Deputy Mayor of Port Stephens Council, Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area, “It’s fantastic to see this new estate going ahead.”

“This development will also support local infrastructure in Medowie, with funding from each block sold.”

“This zoning change gives a great balance between housing and natural bushland and allows our community to grow in a controlled and sustainable way, and will provide affordable land for familie to either upsize or downsize accordingly,” he said.

Impress at Eisteddfod

DANCERS from Medowie came home with an impressive swag of medals, trophies and cash prices after the recent Abermain Eisteddfod.

The Abermain Eisteddfod recently celebrated its 100th Birthday this year, making it the longest running Eisteddfod in Australia.

Dance teacher Corynne Darcy told News Of The Area, “This is such a wonderful achievement for an Eisteddfod to be running this long.”

I personally love this eisteddfod held at Abermain Plaza Hall in Bathurst Street, as it was one that I competed in myself as a child, so it’s really lovely to now see my own students performing there.”

The event was held during the recent school holidays.

The Eisteddfod has sections for children aged 3 years up to ‘Allcomers’ (all ages) in all styles of dance (jazz, tap, classical ballet, national

This year, to celebrate the 100th birthday, they raised their prize money (thanks to generous sponsorship), encouraging even more competitors to take part.

Dance N Dazzle Studio from Medowie had several soloists entered and were awarded 14 First placings, 4 second placings and 5 ‘Highly Commended’.

Successful Students included:- Ebony Deguara, Olivia Lightfoot, Kyara Darcy, Scarlett Darcy and Jordyn Booth.

Each of these girls took out first placings.

Kyara Darcy was awarded the 12/U Jazz Championship winning a trophy and $100 cash for her efforts.

Scarlett Darcy (aged 9) was our most successful

soloist taking out the 12/U Junior Singing Scholarship, winning a trophy and $500.00.

Both girls have deposited their money into their savings account to put towards something important in their future.

Corynne said, “They were both absolutely thrilled and it was certainly a lovely and exciting thing to happen to them after so much hard work.”

Both Kyara and Scarlett were invited back to perform again at the Abermain Birthday Championship Concert where they performed to a packed house including many dance teachers and industry professionals. o Phot ery Gall line On
