NEWCASTLE Airport this week welcomed its first direct flight from Newcastle

to Adelaide, via Fly Pelican.

The inaugural flight marks the commencement of the first new major domestic route from Newcastle Airport

since the introduction of Gold Coast in 2004.

The first flight from Adelaide quickly became a local celebrity affair for its

return journey, carrying The Newcastle Jets and supporters, travelling south for the Round 24 Hyundai A-League fixture against Adelaide United.

Other passengers enjoying the new direct jet service to Adelaide include Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes; Newcastle Airport Chair, Peter Gesling; Newcastle Airport CEO, Peter Cock; and FlyPelican

Newcastle Airport welcomes first flight to Adelaide FROM Page 1

The Irrawang High School Drum Corps were invited to be a part of the celebrations to farewell the inaugural direct flight.

The Drum Corps entertained the crowds, playing on the tarmac, next to the plane bound for Adelaide.

The Captain and First Officer of the Fly Pelican Fokker jet could not contain their curiosity and disembarked to come and meet the students, even filming their performance.

The Newcastle Jets joined in on the fun, posing with Drum Corps students for photos and videos.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, was another one of the lucky passengers and congratulated them on their impressive performance.

Go4Fun CHILDREN in the Medowie and Raymond Terrace areas once again have the chance to join a free course which can transform their health with the support of their families.

The 10-week Go4Fun Program for 7-13 year old children who are above a healthy weight is seeking members for its next course.

Go4Fun, working in partnership with Hunter New England Health to run the course, will commence on 30 April at the Medowie Sports Centre and runs on Mondays from 4pm to 6pm.

The Go4Fun Program is evidence based healthy lifestyle program for overweight children and their parents and aims to help people understand and change unhealthy attitudes towards food and physical activity.

Held weekly, sessions are delivered by speciallytrained health and fitness professionals, the unique course helps children become fitter, healthier and happier and delivers long-term results.

The course gives families the skills and information to make healthier food choices and children join in fun activities designed to improve their selfconfidence and self-

esteem as well as their physical fitness.

Families who have attended last year’s course at Medowie have achieved fantastic results.

Children saw their body mass index and waistlines reduce whilst their self-esteem and fitness soared.

10 year-old Destiny, of Medowie, completed the Go4Fun Program in 2017.

The group took part in a range of activities such as games, quizzes and a supermarket tour, and learnt practical skills such as how to interpret food labels.

Kristy, Destiny’s Mother said, “The Go4Fun Program taught us so much and we are still using the skills and information we learnt from it.”

“I am so pleased

with my daughter’s progress, her whole outlook on life has changed and her self-confidence has soared.”

“Together we’ve learnt all sorts of things about different sorts of foods, cookery tips, shopping hints and ways to make exercise fun, such as walking our new puppy,” she said.

part of a management plan put in place to protect the standard of drinking water.

However, the vote in chambers was unanimous, opening the door to at least investigate the possibility with Hunter Water.

Cr Doohan’s wish is to increase recreational usage of the Grahamstown Dam.

His view is for nonmotorised leisure crafts to be used on the Dam in addition to the recommencement of recreational fishing and swimming.

Cr Doohan is not the only person wanting more access to enjoy what the dam has to offer, and that is the reason he forwarded the motion to council.

“I saw a post on a Medowie Facebook page asking a very basic question ‘Can someone tell me if I can kayak on the dam?’” Cr Doohan told News Of The Area.

“The post received around 150 comments, so that told me that the wider community probably have similar thoughts on how they would like to use Grahamstown

Dam.” “There are many other dams around the country that are used for drinking water purposes but are still open for people to enjoy as part of an active lifestyle,” he said.

“I am sure that if Hunter Water are willing to look at some of the restrictions currently in place for the use of the Dam, a lot of people will be very thankful,” he added.

The use of Grahamstown Dam as yet another area where the people of Port Stephens could enjoy the outdoors could be very beneficial.

WHILE Port Stephens is already seeing grant funded projects being rolled out at Nelson Bay and Anna Bay, Council is working hard to deliver to more of the villages within the Local Government Area(LGA).

Nelson Bay has landed two grants one for the upgrade of Apex Park and another for the street scaping of the township seeing an overall investment of $440,000 coming into the township.

Council has also applied for grants for Raymond Terrace for a $27 million dollar upgrade of William Street which if successful will see the street levelled and the streetscape improved.

Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “Anna Bay and the South Tomaree Community Group has an upcoming meeting and the opportunity to review and upgrade the 2008 strategy, working with Sarah Smith and the Central Ward Councillors to identify areas which can be addressed.”

He believes this could unlock grant opportunities.

In Medowie there are expressions of interest open for blocks of land in the CBD ...

...where council is looking to do a similar development as they have in Salamander Bay’s main shopping precinct.

“This development would provide for much needed facilities in the Medowie CBD area,” he said.

Karuah is certainly a destination and council is as a priority looking for funds to upgrade the main street there as well.

Raymond Terrace has also received a grant for the first Big Belly Bin in Australia, the bin is a solar powered, WiFi enabled unit which rewards positive litter practices while compacting waste and it will even let Council know when it is full.

With chocolate eggs, along with the obligatory hot cross buns, lining the shelves of supermarkets in every suburb, children are waiting expectantly for treats on Easter

PORT Stephens Council has taken out the award for ‘Best Work Health and Safety Improvement (Large Organisation)’ at the 2018 Hunter Safety Awards for its leading workplace mental health program.

The program was developed in response to a review of Council’s existing mental health procedure, with an aim to reduce stigma, get people talking and provide high-quality support to workers experiencing mental health issues.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s an incredible achievement for Council to be recognised for its progressive approach to

“Usually when people think about Work Health and Safety, they think of hard hats and hi-vis. At Port Stephens Council, we’ve moved beyond the physical to think about our workers’ overall health.

“We want to send our workers home in the same or better condition than how they came to work – and that goes for mental health just as much as physical health,” Ms Le Grange said.

Ms Le Grange said this award win brings Council’s total to six safety-related awards in as many years.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised as a leader in the WHS space, but what’s really gratifying is the real and

lasting changes we’ve been able to implement in our workplace.

“We set out to get people talking and reduce the stigma that so often comes with mental health, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that.

“But the job isn’t over – we’ll continually work to ensure that Council provides a platform for consistent and high quality management of mental health in our workplace,” she said.

The awards were announced on Friday 16 March and recognised companies and individuals in the Hunter region who demonstrated best-practice and innovative approaches in workplace health and safety.

News Of The Area caught up with local Anglican Priest, David ‘Davo’ Davies for a oneon-one chat about what Easter is about.

For Christians across the world, Easter is the holiest of holy days on their religious calendar, and Davo, who also teaches Scripture to school children, explained why.

“At one level, Easter is the day that changed the whole world.”

“Nobody has ever come back from the dead before so it gives you hope that there is more to come than just this world.”

“Easter is a great event to look forward to.”

“Friday is often reflective and Sunday is the great celebration of Jesus coming to life again, so the services are joyous.”

Can people mix leisure time with celebrating the original reason for Easter, was a question posed to Davo.

He said, “Often we think it’s another a long weekend and most of my life I thought that too.”

“And it’s fun to go away and celebrate and be with family and friends.”

“But, if you’re not going away and need to do business with God, think about doing it at Easter because that’s a good time.”

In a hint to parishioners, Davo finished with, “I love chocolates and hot cross buns.”

I think my 17-year-old dog is telling me ‘it’s time’ but I don’t know how to let her go. How can I make this impossible decision?

Dogs communicate in lots of subtle and not-so-subtle ways, as I’m sure you know.

When they rip a hole in your new leather lounge, they are actually saying, “You know, I’m feeling a little bit disgruntled with the way you leave me at home all day, on my own, and you somehow think leaving the television going will make me think that you are still home. Well, I’m not quite that stupid.”

When they bring a furry and now unidentifiable creature to your doorstep, they are saying, “Sorry, for a moment there I actually thought I was a cat; I thought I was a feral cat, but now I remember I am a placid dog and I should just wait until 6.00pm when you serve me my kibble and mince.”

As dogs age, they slowly stop doing many of the things they used to do: making their own doggie doors in the flyscreen, jumping up on the legs of unsuspecting visitors, burying your old socks in the compost heap, salivating under the table as you try to enjoy dinner, and so on.

Instead, they take on mannerisms that match their age. They stare vacantly at open pastures, they sleep all day, they get stressed and start ‘sundowning’ at night, they lose their appetite, they hobble, they have more difficulty breathing and some even start slowly removing themselves from the family. With all these signs they are trying to say, “I still love you, but I’m really struggling, and if I could talk I would ask you to start considering whether I have the quality of life that I should have, or whether you are holding on for your benefit and not mine.”

Only you and your vet can make the ultimate decision, but I hope this has, in some small way, helped.

It was a very hot day and the Power took the field for the first time in a competitive game.

The contest was always going to be about learning as Nelson Bay have contested the last three grand finals and were far more experienced and skilled than the Power.

Coach Tony Merritt told News Of The Area, “The game itself was played in a magnificent spirit.”

“While Nelson Bay never let up they took every opportunity during stoppages to provide advice to our players when they could see that it would assist in learning the art of Australian rules football.”

clubs.

It was heartening to see that Port Power had more

players available than the other two teams.

Due to Coffs Harbour only

having seven players it was decided to merge the teams and play one full length game

rather than a round robin.
