NAIDOC week is coming up again, and there are some wonderful events planned for Port Stephens.

National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week takes place this year from 2-9 July, and is held yearly to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The theme of this year’s NAIDOC week celebrations is ‘Our languages matter’.

Celebrations this year will be actively aimed at the need to hold on to Aboriginal language dialects in Australia.

The week will emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land, and in the transmission of history, spirituality and rites.

Murrook Cultural Centre has four special events planned, as well as the PCYC Nations of Origin sports tournament.

July 3 will see the NAIDOC March in Raymond Terrace and on 5 July Murrook will host the NAIDOC community barbecue at Nelson Bay. July 6 will see the Port Stephens NAIDOC Touch Championship teams take to the field with the local Aboriginal Community, NSW Police, St John Ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue (Emergency Services), Port

Stephens Council and the Royal Australian Air Force coming together for one day to compete in a touch football tournament.

On July 7, Murrook Cultural Centre will host another wonderful NAIDOC week family fun day at the Cultural Centre at Williamtown.

July 11-13 will see the PCYC Nations of Origin multi-sport tournament take over Raymond Terrace.

The competition has quickly become the largest Aboriginal Youth sporting event in NSW with

more than 3500 participants since it began three years ago.

The tournament will have three sports available; Rugby League 7s, Football 5s and Netball.

The Nations of Origin tournament serves a grand purpose, focusing on reconciliation, education, sport and cultural identity.

Students participating in the teams must have 80 percent attendance at school as a minimum, and all teams must have both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal participants, with a 70:30 ratio.

THERE is no excuse to be bored these school holidays, with a wide assortment of cheap and free activities for the whole family to get involved in.

The larger, more well known places like Newcastle and Maitland Museums and Libraries are full to the brim with activities, events and outings that are perfect for these chilly winter mornings.

Check out their respective webpages for ideas, and to book where necessary.

Closer to home for Medowie and Tilligerry residents, are three events being organised by the Greenhouse eatery in Medowie’s Pacific Dunes complex.

They are hosting an animal encounters Kids Disco on 5 July for $5 entry fee, and a movie night showing ‘Moana’ for $5 on 12 July which includes a cup of popcorn, movie and face painting.

The Hunter Botanical Gardens is putting on a Children’s Discovery Day on 4 July, with a long list of activities, as well as visiting guests Maurie Mole and the HSPA Marching Band.

Entry is $5 per child, which also includes a free show bag with lots of goodies inside.

There is also an open day at the Tilligerry Habitat in Tanilba Bay on

9 July.

This event has been organised as part of Naturefest and will have markets, music, barbecue lunch and lots of activities for the whole family.

Raymond Terrace Marketplace will host activities covering both weeks for children in the centre.

The brand new Maitland Riverside Plaza will host its official opening, and the opening of Aldi, with a snow experience.

Wednesday 12 July will see the centre transformed into a magical winter wonderland.

There are of course also countless things you can do free of charge with the kids.

Plan nature walks, scavenger hunts around your local area, make a list of all local parks and playgrounds and try a new one each day, have cooking day in the kitchen and teach them some local recipes, the list could go on forever.

If all else fails and you need a break, don’t forget that the Medowie Sports Centre offers 90mins for $5 for children to have fun in the Munchkins creche whilst you enjoy a cuppa and cake, or a warm winter lunch at Sportz Cafe.

At 8.00pm on a Sunday night, my son tells me that he has to dress up as a wolf for a performance. I do not have anything in the house that resembles a wolf.

What should I do?

Well, Mrs PV, what you should do is nothing, because that will teach your son to be more organised and selfsufficient.

By doing nothing, you will hopefully be bringing up a child who turns into an adult who is not rewarded by leaving unpleasant tasks to others – right up until the very last minute on a Sunday night when you should be drinking red wine in front of an open fire or watching a movie, or soaking in a bath.

But that is not what you will do, because you are a mother and you will feel judged by the drama teacher if little Sonny-Jim turns up to his performance with wolf-like facial expressions drawn onto his face with your mascara and a pair of Explorer socks that do look slightly wolfish, because they’ve been washed with the towels and are covered in loose threads.

Instead you will rant and rave and then you will go door-knocking, begging your neighbours for any costume items that looks remotely like they could be turned into a wolf with a few safety pins or some doublesided tape or a nail gun.

Or else you will go up to the school, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and you will explain that your son has performance jitters and is suffering from some form of be-a-wolf-by-Monday-post-traumatic-stress-disorder and he will not be performing on Monday, but on Friday, when he is feeling better.

And then, if that doesn’t work, you will just raise your face skywards and howl.

INVICTUS Games champion, Squadron Leader Danny Jeffery will be back again to represent Australia at the games in Toronto later this year.

Held on 23-30 September in the Canadian city, he will participate in the adaptive sports of wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis, and seated volleyball.

News Of The Area met with Danny, who has clocked up an impressive 35 years in the RAAF, just prior to the announcement of his inclusion in the team to discuss his sporting achievements.

Training and selection is not easy, with Danny having attended training and selection campus prior to the announcement of his selection into the team.

Describing wheelchair rugby as “Demolition Derby in wheelchairs, it is always on the move and you are very bruised and battered at the end of the game,” Danny is keen to keep participating in the sport.

Proud to represent Australia, he said, “I’ve represented in my uniform and this is a different field.

I’d be humbled to represent Australia on the sporting field.”

Talking about past participation at the Invictus Games, Danny said, “Everyone in the crowd is cheering for you as a veteran.”

“It doesn’t matter what country you’re from.”

“I’ve always been active in sports, this gives another reason to stay active.”

“I am now a professional wheelchair tennis player too.”

He was at the recent launch of the Sydney 2018 Invictus Games and again met HRH Prince Harry.

“Prince Harry has a lot of empathy for fellow Vets

“Through his work with Invictus, it’s opened up a lot of avenues for Veterans

NEWS Of The Area (NOTA) is linking arms with Tilligerry Adult and Community Education (TACE) to co-sponsor a national short story competition which is now open for entry.

Former school principal and chief judge Lloyd Hogg said that with prize money of $1100, the competition will draw entries from all over Australia.

“We have emailed over 100 writers’ groups in all states and with exposure in the three NOTA editions we expect that many local creative writers will be submitting entries,” he said.

“It costs just $10 to enter one story and $5 for each additional submission,” he added.

“There is a limit of 2000 words and writers can send in stories on any topic.”

THE Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraiser, a fundraising initiative of the Mark Hughes Foundation, was an outstanding success locally again this year.

Local retailers, child care centres and schools had beanies for sale, as well as running fundraisers when beanies sold out nationwide.

Woolworths Medowie sold a total of $3,000 worth of beanies, with several hundred dollars more in cupcake and cash donations.

The talented girls of the bakery also decorated Minion and Brain-themed cupcakes for purchase, with all of the proceeds going to the charity.

Manager Mark Keating told News Of The Area, “We’d like to thank the community for getting behind our fundraising efforts as well as they did.”

“From beanies to cupcakes, and even all the people donating their change at the self-serve checkouts instead of pocketing it,” he said.

Mark Hughes visited Medowie Woolworths and Irrawang High School to meet locals and students, and to say thank you in person for raising much needed funds for this terrible disease.

Jess Halloran, a Year 10 student at Irrawang High School, lost her Mum to brain cancer last August and

decided to head the Irrawang High fundraiser in her memory, with the assistance of her year advisor, Rachelle Burns.

Staff and students who wore a beanie, and many who didn’t, gave a gold coin donation at assembly, and the school ran a cake stall at recess and a sausage sizzle at lunch.

A special assembly was held in Mark Hughes’ honour, where he told his own personal story of battling brain cancer, before accepting a cheque for $1350 from Irrawang staff and students.

Medowie Woolworths also named their fundraising efforts in memory of Jess Halloran’s Mum, Jodie, and

AT only two years of age, Isla-Rose began exhibiting worrying immune responses that affected her skin, food and environment allergies.

Isla-Rose’s diagnosable conditions are complex, and multifaceted.

SOCIAL media app Snapchat has introduced a new feature that allows users to share their locations with their friends in real-time.

This fun and usually innocent app is a popular pastime for adults and young people alike, so it is important that parents take one simple precaution to ensure their security and safety is not compromised without realising.

According to recent app updates on Snapchat, you can now zoom in on Snapchat friends and know as precise a location as what street they are currently on.

What’s worse is that the feature appears to be enabled by default, with users having to actively enter ‘Ghost mode’ in order to turn it off.

With young kids loving the fantastic qualities that this fun app allows them, it is important for parents to get to know the settings of the app if they are not conversant with Snapchat, and switch their settings to this ‘ghost mode’.

This ‘Mama and Bebe’ need to stay together forever.

They are both incredibly sweet.

Mama loves lazing about, while Bebe is a typical playful and energetic kitten.

“Bebe is very lucky to be alive, as when she arrived into care, she came to us with her Mama and littermates, she had a paralysis tick and spent time at the Emergency Vet Clinic,” Amanda from KITTY Rescue project said.

She miraculously pulled through and now is thriving!

With winter officially starting this week, the KITTY Rescue Project is in need of all things feline related to help them to keep these precious little rescues warm, fed and cared for.

Amanda from KITTY Rescue Project said, “We will gratefully accept any donations that will help us to continue to do what we do.”

If anyone would like to donate supplies to help the KITTY Rescue Project, they are desperately in need of kitty beds, blankets, litter trays, good quality wet and dry kitten food, litter and toys.

Amanda said, “Basically we could use anything kitty-related, and would be so appreciative of any assistance.”

The rescue facility is also in need of more carers, and would love to hear from anyone who is interested, or who may have some questions about how it all works.

Roy Lacey’s Legacy

By Geoff WALKER LEMON Tree Passage Bowling Club (now renamed Club Lemon Tree) has benefited to the tune of some $207,000 thanks to the generosity of the late Roy Lacey.

Roy left this bequest for the

improvement of his beloved club and already around $140,000 has been earmarked for the resurfacing of the synthetic green.

Club president Kevin Colman said, “Roy was a long time bowler and resident of Lemon tree Passage.”
