Donate & save lives As the festive mode hits, the need for blood rises importance of donations, and

THIS Christmas, as the silly season hits and everyone is busy with family, friends and festive gatherings, the national average of blood donations will drop.

Whilst it is understandable that people are busy, the Australian Red Cross blood service urges people to make some time for a donation, and help them get through a time when donations drop dramatically, but the need for blood rises.

Kelli Bell, who lost her father to non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, told News Of The Area, “We were lucky to have three extra months with Dad as a direct result of blood transfusions he received from someone who knew the

“As a result of that extra time the blood transfusions gifted him, Dad was able to meet his fourth grandchild, and to receive the special news that he also had two more grandchildren on the way.”

Every blood donation can save three lives, we have all heard that catch phrase, but it can also be the gift that so many people need just for that little extra time, or to aid their recovery from a less severe condition and enable them to live healthily again.

There are three components to blood that can be used, whole blood, plasma and platelets.

Becc was then heartbroken to come home to the devastating news that Orkambi has once again been rejected from the PBS listing, and the price tag on human life, around $260,000 per year, will remain.

Becc told News Of The Area, “It makes me feel like they personally couldn’t care less if Cystic Fibrosis patients live or die, because for some of us, that is what this drug is the difference between, life or death.”

Becc’s lung function has gone from thirty percent or less (she was too sick to even give a reading), to fifty eight percent, a number she hasn’t seen in years.

She has put on 15kg, attended almost one hundred percent of classes last semester, joined up to the gym, and felt she was finally able to enjoy her life.

Becc told News Of The Area, “I am terrified to think of what would have happened if I didn’t have Orkambi, would I even still be alive, or would my lungs have given up while I was waiting on a transplant list?”

“So we will have to speak LOUDER, because we will be heard.”

During this festive season where there are many parties and some with fireworks (although this is illegal without a permit), dogs are particularly sensitive to the noise and susceptible to harm.

Dr Hudson also

said, “With all the fireworks and parties at the moment, if locals are out driving at night, please be careful as there are many dogs wandering the streets who are scared and break loose from their yard.”

With that in mind, Dr Hudson also said, “If you are going out, make sure your dog is secure and safe in the yard at night.”

“Dogs getting out at night due to loud noises are a danger to themselves and drivers if they were to be accidently run over.”

The RSPCA reminds pet owners not to leave dogs locked in the car as this poses a very real threat to the animal’s life.

It is not only cruel, but it is also a criminal offence with a $5500 fine and up to six months’ jail as a penalty, and these penalties increase dramatically if the dog dies as a result of being left in the car.

Cancer Council NSW nutrition program Eat It To Beat It works with parents to help families add more fruit and vegetables to the household diet for better health and cancer prevention.

The program has already helped inspire more than 1470 Hunter parents in 2016, through free sessions and workshops.

Hunter Nutrition Project Officer Clare Murphy said celebrating the New Year and making a resolution to pick up healthy habits was a great way to start 2017.

Miss Murphy said New Year was also a great time to think about lifestyle choices, which affect cancer risk.

In Australia approximately 37,000 or one third of cancer cases each year are preventable.

TALENTED students from Irrawang High School will be exhibiting a collection of artworks produced this year, as well as the 2016 HSC Visual Arts students who worked extremely hard to produce their Body of Work for their final assessment.

These works are a collection of various styles, mediums and concepts, with drawing being a popular choice made by students this year.

The conceptual ideas have come from personal experiences, memories of the past, how we interpret our reality both imagined and real, and also touching on family connections and relationships.

Irrawang High School representative Luella Fagan told News Of The

Area that the opening of the exhibition was a celebrated occasion of some very talented students’ works.

“These students have done some incredible pieces of work, it is wonderful that they have this platform to be able to publicly showcase their creations,” she said.

Art Teacher Grant Wyllie officially opened the exhibition.

“The students have done an amazing job exploring their own capabilities and imagination and have shown maturity in their art practice and personal experimentations,” he said.

The exhibition is house at the Raymond Terrace Library Art Space.

The exhibition opened on the 30 November, but will run through until the end of January 2017.

STUDENTS of local schools helped Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson spread the Christmas cheer this year by designing her Christmas cards.

More than 100 local students took up Ms Swanson’s invitation to draw or paint a Christmas card design, and a winner was chosen from six finalists by representatives of Raymond Terrace Art Society.

“The cards are beautiful,

and show the great depth of artistic talent we have in our community,” Ms Swanson said.

“All entries are displayed in the windows of my Raymond Terrace office for people to see.”

The winning design, featuring a koala up a Christmas tree, is by Bobs Farm Public School year 4 student Fynn Brunt.

Other winners were: Tayah McIntyre, year 2, Stanford Merthyr Infants

School; Ahmani Jedniuk, year 2, Medowie Christian School; Karlani Lamond Swan, year 5, Bobs Farm Public School; Connah Newman, year 6, Hunter River Community School, and Kaili Ward, year 3, Tomaree Public School.

The winning designs were printed on Ms Swanson’s Christmas cards, and also featured in her Christmas newsletter, which was sent to every household in the Paterson electorate.

Airport Master Plan THE NSW Government has provided $30,000 in funding for the development of a Newcastle Airport master plan which will drive airport upgrades and sustainability over the next 20 years.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC, announced the funding and said the master plan will bolster tourism and economic benefits for the Newcastle region into the future.

“Newcastle Airport is a significant economic driver for businesses in the Hunter and the nearby regions, generating jobs and economic growth,” Mr MacDonald said.

A 2014 Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) found that the airport precinct supports at least 1,485 jobs, plus $856 million in business activity.

“This funding from the NSW Government will help to ensure the airport can cater for the increasing travel demand in the years to come, as well as providing certainty on the future of the Hunter economy for the local community,” Mr MacDonald added.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Development, Skills and Small Business, John Barilaro, said the master plan will include analysis of market demand, airport capacity, ground use

and environmental planning, along with land use proposals to help plan for the future.

“The NSW Government recognises the importance of Newcastle Airport as the largest regional airport in NSW, with 1.2 million passengers passing through each year and the potential for further growth in the coming years,” Mr Barilaro said.

“The Hunter Regional Plan 2036 identified Newcastle Airport as a key asset to link with international markets, so it’s important that a master plan is delivered.”

Last year the NSW Government provided $855,000 to support the fit-out of the international processing areas of the Terminal Expansion project.

“We also granted $11.1 million in funding for the Terminal Expansion project which increased terminal capacity for additional domestic services, creating more than 80 direct jobs across both projects,” Mr Barilaro added.

“These future developments play a major role in boosting the Hunter’s presence as Australia’s largest regional economy and we are committed to supporting the community along the way.”

IRRAWANG High this week farewelled one of their longserving members of staff.

Mr Peter Slade, a muchloved and familiar face in the Irrawang school fabric, announced his retirement earlier this year, to coincide with the final week of school for 2016.

Irrawang High School representative Ms Luella Fagan told News Of The Area, “It is with selfish sadness that we bid farewell and wish a happy retirement to Mr Peter Slade, our much loved Farm Assistant (aka CEO

and Managing Director) who has spent the last 31 years working on our school farm, as well as managing his own 100 acre farm at Eagleton.”

From a single shed containing all the farm equipment and staff room, and land covered in Lantana and blackberry bushes, Mr Slade has been a driving force in the expansion of the Irrawang High School farm into a 2 hectare state-of-the art $1.8 million Trade Training Centre, with the most modern equipment and facilities.

of the students with special needs who have spent time on the farm – either tending their own vegetable patch, watering the plants, driving the tractor, spending time with all the animals or collecting the eggs, vegetables and fruit to sell to the staff,” Mr Slade said.

He is known for his patience, his wicked sense of humour, cheeky smile and sensitivity to all students.

Many teachers have worked with Mr Slade over the years, however he and Ms Henry, the current Primary Industries teacher, have formed a special working relationship and have lots of fun at the same time.

His absence around the school will be surely felt, but staff and students alike wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.

Town Water Win

RESIDENTS on the northern side of Shady Avenue in Salt Ash are relieved to learn that that they will be connected to town water, after initially being told that they lived outside the Williamtown ‘Red Zone’.

As part of Defence’s roll out of town water to properties in the Red Zone, residents on the Southern side of Shady Ave were due to have their homes connected to town water but residents on the

northern side were not.

In late November Kate Washington wrote to the NSW Water Minister and advocated for all residents of Shady Ave to be connected to town water as part of this program.

This week the Minister has responded, stating that that “Defence has written to Hunter Water advising that they will fund the provision of water reticulation to all developed properties on both sides of Shady Ave.” Hunter Water expects

this work to be completed in early 2017.

“This news will be a welcome relief to those residents on the border of the Red Zone that they have not been forgotten,” said Kate Washington MP. “Connecting residents to town water is an important first step, but there are still unanswered questions about the impact of dust and the effect that construction on the base is having on the health of surrounding residents,” Ms Washington said.

It can also be a lonely time for those going through personal turmoil.

With a national focus on mental health, there is no greater time to publicise services that may assist someone in a time of need

during this festive season.

One such service of benefit to mums in particular is the NHM group (Newcastle/ Hunter Mums meet up group) on Facebook.

Bec Tansey moved towns in April 2015 when she was pregnant with her third child.

Bec posted on the only ‘Mums’ Facebook group she could find, which had around 200 members and asked if

anyone wanted to meet up.

It was so well received that she asked if they wanted to form a small group where she would post a catch-up event each week.

Starting with just ten members, the group has now grown to around 3,700 members.

Bec, and her team of admins, organise a number or weekly meets all over Port

Stephens and Newcastle.

The group also runs regular celebrations for holiday events, and in recent weeks hosted a Christmas party with over 200 NHM families.

The group has proven to be a wonderful support service to many local women and families.

Bec told News Of The Area, “We have noticed a lack of judgment that you often see in Facebook ‘Mums’ pages because there was always the chance that you would meet another mum at a meet up, so any differences are respected.”

“We offer support, guidance and the chance to connect with other mums.”

“The group has been a saving grace to a lot of mums who may feel isolated and unsupported in their journey through motherhood,” Bec said.

There is a regular meet up that takes place in Medowie. If you would like to be a part of this online community, check them out on Facebook and join in.

Dancing Through Generations

AT the end of year celebration concert for 2016’s dance year at Studio2Stage, a very special dance was performed.

One which moved many in the crowd to tears.

Tina, a dance teacher for 35 years, and Studio2Stage owner for 32 years, is lucky enough to have students still dancing with the studio that have been pupils for 23 and 32 years, who have now begun having children themselves, and enrolling those children to also dance with ‘Miss Tina’.

Tina thought it would be

a special moment for those mothers to dance with their little ones.

Tina told News Of The Area, “These men and women are not just my long-time students, but have become my ‘chosen children’, they are what inspires me every day to continue doing what I do.”

“I have shared in their childhood, been with them through the awkward teenage years and watched them turn into young men and women in what seems like just a blink of an eye.”

Holiday Tennis Club

EXCITING news for young budding tennis champions, or any young person wanting to give the sport a try, with Medowie Tennis Club’s latest announcement.

Medowie Tennis Club is going to hold a camp in the Christmas holidays for boys and girls to improve their tennis skills.

The club currently has a lot of children, and would love to encourage more friends to join them.

The Tennis Camp dates are 18, 19 and 20 January, with a small fee of $30 per child to cover costs.

The camp will start at 9am and finish at 12 noon

each day and is a wonderful chance to polish up your skills or to pick up a new sport.

The Medowie Tennis courts are of a high quality and the ladies in the committee have worked very hard to bring them to this standard.

President Diane Rees told News Of The Area, “We are so lucky to have these tennis courts in our town, and we would love to see even more people utilise them.”

“Tennis is a wonderful sport, it offers a wonderful chance for children to be

active, be healthy and enjoy this great game.”

“I have been playing tennis since I was a very young child in a very small school in the Snowy Mountains region, and value the sport so much from my childhood,” she said.

The club would also like to remind the community that on Tuesday mornings ladies tennis starts at nine, and children are welcome to come and play while mums play tennis.

Mixed tennis is held on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm onwards, and on Saturday afternoons from 3pm to 6pm.

Ladies competition tennis is held during the week playing clubs around our district.
