New Book to Expand History

PORT Stephens Family History Society is in the early stages of research for its latest book.

It’s a makeover of the original ‘A History of the Tilligerry Peninsula’ and is more family focused on those settlers who took up land in and around the upper reaches of Tilligerry Creek from the 1850s onwards.

The first imprint (1996) of some 600 copies sold out quickly and the second edition of 500 are all but gone.

The third edition will be larger, more comprehensive and will include additional information which has come to light in the interim.

The society currently boasts some ten publications.

exploring our landscape After 20 years of living the high life, retirement came upon her, and she found herself in a paddock under a tree, dreaming of the days that were.

One sunny afternoon, she was given a second chance at adventure when some people came to visit.

They took one look at her and saw what she could be.

She was towed away and taken to live in a backyard, where her restoration began.

They painted her, cleaned her up and changed her into the van she is today, but they realised that they didn’t have the time to give her all the attention she deserved, so they began to search for her true adventure buddy.

Fire Danger Season Starts

THE NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is reminding Port Stephens LGA residents that fire permits are required during the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period.

NSW RFS Inspector Martin Siemsen said hotter and drier conditions mean fires are more likely to start and spread quickly during the Bush Fire Danger Period, which officially begins on 1 October 2017.

“Due to current and predicted weather conditions, the issuing of permits will be suspended as of 1 October until further notice,” Inspector Siemsen said.

Gavin Smith from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade told News Of The Area that we look set for above normal conditions this fire season and with no decent rain in the foreseeable future, he urged local residents to “keep themselves aware of the Fire Danger Ratings” and “take a few extra precautions

to help keep your home and family safe”.

When conditions are particularly bad, such as on days of Severe, Extreme or Catastrophic Fire Danger, the NSW RFS may declare a Total Fire Ban, prohibiting the lighting of any fire in the open, even if you have a fire permit.”

On a day of Total Fire Ban the lighting of fires is prohibited. This includes

cooking fires using incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel, such as wood or charcoal.

Gas or electric barbecues are permitted under the following conditions: * They are on residential property within 20 metres of the house or dwelling. * They are in a picnic area and the appliance is approved

by Council, National Parks and Wildlife Services or State Forest.

* They are under the direct control of a responsible adult. * The ground around a barbecue is cleared for two metres of all material which could burn. * You have an immediate and continuous supply of water available.

“We urge all residents in the Port Stephens, Cessnock, Dungog and Maitland LGA areas to be vigilant and extremely careful with fire during the Bush Fire Danger Period,” Inspector Siemsen said.

“Every resident should have a Bush Fire Survival Plan so they know what to do on days of increased fire danger and can immediately put their plan into action if their home is threatened by fire.”

Mr TY, Medowie There’s a saying about mixing business and pleasure.

What is it? I would look it up but I am still waiting for NBN service after three months.

If anyone out there would like to write to Jasminda about NBN service, go ahead; make my day.

Now, back to you, Mr TY. Forget the three-course meal.

That is a disaster waiting to happen. I once tried to cook a three-course meal for some new Korean friends.

I also tried to cook Korean cuisine.

Not only did I never see them again, but they actually left the neighbourhood in the dark of night, with not so much as a forwarding number.

There’s only one solution and that’s to serve fondue.

It’s basically two of the most divine things on earth mixed into a pot – cheese and alcohol.

It was big in the 70s and, quite frankly, I can’t understand why it went out of fashion.

It is also a very hands-on meal, so it may be an opportunity to showcase your employability skills.

What would you do, for example, if your boss’s fiancé did not realise that she had a bit of melted cheese stuck to her cheek?

How would you respond if the fondue flame set the tablecloth on fire?

There’s a bit of good old Connie Confidence required in that moment.

Or how about when your wife accidentally drops her crusty bread into the seductively erupting cheese and then leans over and displays some Gabby Get Along, leaning in for a kiss from the person on her left, which happens to be your new boss.

This is, I should add, customary fondue etiquette – see page 56 titled ‘The Unexpected Delights of Dropping Your Crouton’ in the 1970s Fondue Guide (it was, Mr TY, a freeloving decade).

I hope I’ve been helpful. Let me know how it all goes.

Fostering New Opportunities

MEDOWIE couple Jason and Nicole Dawe have recently been approved as foster carers and hope their story and the just-finished National Foster Care Week will encourage other families to think about getting involved.

The Dawes had been considering fostering for some time, but a health setback for Nicole last year put things on hold.

Fortunately she made a full recovery and the family went ahead with their plans.

Jason, Nicole and their daughter Kiara have always opened their home to family and friends, so it was only natural the fostering role would suit them.

Kiara was always a big part of the decision making, with Nicole telling News Of The Area “We always wanted a big family, and we’ve always

wanted to help children.”

Nicole and Jason foster through Allambi Care, an outof-home foster agency for children and young people in the Newcastle and Hunter region.

They first contacted Allambi Care in March this year, and began their training program in May. Following their training, and a comprehensive assessment checking process, they were eventually approved as authorised foster carers.

Things haven’t looked back since.

They were matched with two children and Nicole said “the kids have settled in really well, it is wonderful.”.

Jason and Nicole had tried for more children of their own, including through IVF. “It seemed like the universe was telling us we were meant to have our big

family through foster care,” Nicole said.

It was a whole-of-family decision and Kiara adores having siblings to dote on, and is thriving on the experience.

As Nicole said, the new additions to the family “will always know how special and loved they are in our home”.

There are many children and young people in our community who, through no fault of their own, cannot live with their parents or families.

Carers for emergency, respite and long-term care are urgently needed.

There’s no stereotype for a carer and Allambi Care considers people from all walks of life including families such as the Dawes, retirees, same-sex couples and singles of either gender.

Medowie’s oldest Lion

MEDOWIE’S oldest Lion is a spritely 84 years young, and she is a passionate Lions Club member.

Ann-Marie Argent, who turns 85 next month, has been a Medowie Lion for 11 years.

She was born in Portsmouth, England, and migrated to Australia back in 1964.

Ann-Marie and her husband have three daughters, all married, who have in turn given them nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

When asked what AnnMarie loved most about being a Lion, she told News Of The Area, “The friendships are wonderful!.”

“I so enjoy helping the community and getting involved in so many wonderful local, community events.”

“But you know, I have to say that I love the barbecues,” she said.

“Being from England, I didn’t have much experience, but now I give myself a pat on the back, because I’ve definitely polished and perfected my barbecue skills.”

Ann-Marie is involved in a number of other community endeavours, including the popular Overflow Church, that she credits as being a

very special group of people doing wonderful things for the community.

Ann-Marie said her favourite thing about Medowie is “the caring people always offering to help others around them”.

Lions club members are men and women who strive to make a difference in their local community as well as in communities worldwide.

Their volunteer efforts go

beyond the support of vision care, to addressing unmet health and education needs worldwide.

Mahaylia speaks for Port Stephens Youth

MAHAYLIA Soars is one of 100 passionate young people from across New South Wales selected to have their voices heard and debate a range of issues that matter to them as part of the 16th Annual YMCA NSW Youth Parliament later this year.

Over four sitting days on 25-26 and 28-29 September, the cohort, aged between 1318, will debate bills on topics including youth mental health, the environment, housing affordability and education – in the chambers at State Parliament House in Sydney.

Mahaylia has been an active advocate for youthrelated issues in Port Stephens for a number of years, most recently assisting with Youth Week events in 2016 and 2017 as part of her involvement with the Port Stephens Youth Advisory Panel (YAP).

She has also recently assisted with the organisation of the 2017 Port Stephens Youth forum, and was the Youth representative on the board for COPSY (Caring for our Youth Port Stephens).

Mahaylia told News Of The Area, “The YMCA Youth Parliament program is a great way for young people to have their say on real issues in NSW.” “While it is an amazing educational experience it is also a great way to make friends with young people across the whole state.”

“I’m really excited to represent Port Stephens and bring back some great ideas for Port Stephens Youth,” she

said.

YMCA NSW CEO Leisa Hart said the influential program continues to break new ground every year.

“At the YMCA, we believe in the power of inspired young people.”

“By giving our young people a platform to be heard through our YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program, we not only empower them, but open up so many opportunities to improve and strengthen our communities through their ideas.”

“I am incredibly proud that the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program continues to help shape policy in this state and I look forward to seeing what this year’s talented Youth Parliamentarians can achieve,” she said.

At the end of the sitting week, all pieces of

youth legislation will be presented to NSW MPs for consideration.

This YMCA NSW program has had more than half a dozen pieces of youth legislation passed into NSW law over the past 15 years, including the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme.

Youth Parliament is managed by YMCA NSW and coordinated by a volunteer taskforce of young people aged between 18 and 22 who facilitate youth-led advocacy, community leadership and education about the parliamentary process.

These images he has passed on to the Raymond Terrace Historical Society for preservation.

Currently, he is working on a project which he hopes will end up as a public exhibition which could, in turn, raise diabetes awareness.

This disease is mushrooming with society’s poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity.

It is very much on the increase in the next generation of children.

John has invited a broad range of people to pose for him holding items which reflect their character or interests.

That’s not all: he includes himself in the photo-shoot sitting beside the subject with one leg of his [John’s] trousers rolled up and the skin painted black!

A black leg is one of the lesser effects of diabetes.

Blindness and amputations are some of the more serious consequences of this condition.

New tenner hits Medowie

THE new $5 note has a friend, with the rollout of the new $10 note this week from the Reserve Bank of Australia.

While the colour, size and shape hasn’t changed, the revamped tenners boast better security features, benefit to the vision impaired, and new artwork.

All the notes in this series each feature a different species of Australian bird and wattle.

The cockatoo and the bramble wattle are splashed on this edition of the ten.

For the vision impaired, two bumps on the bottom edge of the note will be an identifying aid.

The tenner pays tribute to two famous Australian writers Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson and Dame Mary Gilmore.

Banjo Paterson (18641941) was a writer, poet, journalist and horseman.

His most well-known work is the Man from Snowy River.

To help beef up the note’s security, an excerpt of the Man from Snowy River is in microprint on the note.

Dame Mary Gilmore (1865-1962) is featured on the other side.

She was also a poet and journalist, as well as a campaigner against injustice and deprivation.

Dame Gilmore founded the Fellowship of Australian Writers, and during the Second World War, she spurred on Australian soldiers with a call to patriotism in the poem ‘No Foe Shall Gather Our Harvest’.

This poem is also featured in microprint on the note.

It is hoped people will have little luck counterfeiting this $10 note, as it comes designed with security features that are worldleading, merging security with design and art.

When the new $5 note was unveiled, a chorus of complaints was heard across the continent.

Not only were the colourful notes considered ugly, but they couldn’t be recognised in some vending machines and old pokies machines.

The RBA says it has been in contact with cash handlers and machine manufacturers to make sure the new notes are recognised by cash scanning machines from day-one of circulation.

For instance, businesses with cashhandling machines were given six months’ notice and production-quality banknotes to update their wares.

MEDOWIE Lions Clubs are calling on all locals to drop in and support their upcoming Art & Craft Show.

There is a category for everyone, covering photography, art and all handicrafts.

This year’s Medowie Lions Art & Craft Show is on 6 and 7 October 2017 at the Medowie Community Hall.

The Show will be open on Friday 10am to 5pm, and saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Medowie Lions Club member, Helen Riemann, told News Of The Area, “We are hoping for a wonderfully successful weekend at the show.”

“Every year we strive to make the show bigger and better.”

The show is not a competition as such, but rather a showing, as all works must be for sale.

Having said that, the Medowie Bull n Bush has provided a $200 ‘people’s choice’ award to be presented.

This year’s show will also feature an exciting new exhibit.

A collection of hand created steampunk costumes and scale model working Mark specialises in working with athletes/teams of all abilities to help them get the most out of their training and performance.

Lost at Sea

ACTION aplenty on the waterways recently saw Marine Rescue units from Lake Macquarie, Nelson Bay and Lemon Tree Passage unite to hone their skills.

This they did in tandem with water police in a mock rescue/recovery exercise in the waters off the Port.

The situation had a distress signal, reportedly

from a 5.5metre white runabout with two people on board being received from an area somewhere between Broughton Island and the entrance to the Port.

A visual search from land failed to locate the stricken craft so a search and recovery mission was mounted.

After studying an admiralty chart and factoring in wind and tidal considerations, they marked

Hair with Heart

HANNAH Ryder has a heart of gold, and a desire to help those around her who are less fortunate.

The ten-year-old Medowie Public School student this week achieved her goal of donating her golden tresses to the Variety

Club, to make a wig for someone in need.

Garnett’s Salon donated the cost of the hair cut, and welcomed Hannah, her family and friends, and Variety Club representatives into the salon to witness this very special hair cut.

Birrawal the Crane

PASSING through Williamtown, it is unlikely you have missed seeing the new addition to the skyline, a huge crane assisting with the upgrade to the RAAF base.

Wirreanda Public School students were proud to liaise with Williamtown RAAF Base and CPB construction company this week to name this larger than life crane.

Students were given the opportunity to paint, draw, colour and make a model of the crane, as well as name it.

There were so many wonderfully talented entrants, and the school was very proud of the combined efforts of its students.

Overall winners were: 1st - Scarlett Lewis, 2nd - Aidan Castling and 3rd Lola Cutajar.

Model winners were Kaydence Wilson and Annie Dolstra.

Stage winners were Alice Threadgate, Nash Rowbottom, Elaina Cannings, Cooper McKenna, Charlie Aurisch, Cruze Lopez

and Ebony Delafontaine.

The overall winner of the competition, Scarlett Lewis, named the crane ‘Birrawal’ which means big and strong in the traditional language of the Worimi people.

Scarlett’s mother Clare told News Of The Area, “Scarlett was very thankful to Vicki Griffiths at our local land council for her invaluable help in assisting Scarlett to name the crane a traditional Aboriginal name.”

Scarlett won a drone and a $50 gift voucher.

Other winners were given vouchers worth $100 or $50 and a prize bag.

CPB also presented the school captains with a mobile sound system in appreciation of their involvement in naming the crane.

The winning students will travel to the RAAF base in Term 4 to have their photos taken with the crane.

Wirreanda would like to thank both the RAAF and CPB for the opportunity to be involved in such a prominent local event.

Get Ready Open Day

MEDOWIE Rural Fire Brigade hosted a successful ‘Get Ready’ open day recently at the station.

Around 250 people visited the station to see the displays, chat with our volunteer firies and get safety information on this year’s fire season.

Gavin Smith from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade told News Of The Area, “Even with many things also happening in the community on the same day, like soccer presentations, we had a great turn out.”

“We had a number of people asking questions about fire safety and such after seeing the kitchen fire demonstration, which is a great thing from our perspective.”

“We had to send two of our trucks out to assist with a Salt Ash fire late in the afternoon, so those that were there at the time got really excited to see first hand the crews being dispatched and responding under lights and siren.”

Residents are reminded that they are welcome to visit the station of a Saturday

morning if they have any questions at all about fire safety or preparing their homes.

Medowie Brigade is seeking expressions of interest from the public to join the volunteer brigade to assist with protecting our community from fire and other emergencies.

The focus of our recruitment is those with daytime availability, especially during the week such as shift workers, retired people, self employed, stay at home parents or carers, and empty nesters.

Year 12 Irrawang students graduate

A SPECIAL ceremony was held this week for the Year 12 students at Irrawang High School.

The achievements of our young people were celebrated in front of family and friends, wishing the students all the very best as they begin the Higher School Certificate, and embark on their post-schooling plans.
