Squash court opening

Gymnastic Dynamic Duo

TWO young male gymnasts are quickly making a name for themselves, and paving the way for other young boys to embrace the sport of Gymnastics.

Joshua Lee and Joshua Thompson both attend Medowie Christian School and both train at Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale.

The two Joshua’s were selected this year, based on their results from the 2015 State Championships, to participate in the 2016 NSW Gymnastics State Development Squad.

Their selection involves them travelling to Sydney

to train with gymnasts and coaches from many NSW clubs, including the High Performance Centre.

It is a fantastic achievement having two local boys selected for this team, when most of the boys generally come from city clubs.

Joshua Lee is participating in this squad for his second year.

For Joshua Thompson, it is his first year.

Both boys competed in the Christian Schools State competition in August in Sydney where Joshua Thompson placed first in Level 2, and Joshua Lee placed

Over the holidays both boys competed at Country Championships where nine-year-old Joshua Lee placed second in Level 4, and sweven-year-old Joshua Thompson placed first in Level 2.

Programs manager Rohan Kennedy told News Of The Area, “Both boys have just competed at the State Championship this weekend where they have continued to make improvements, and although this is the final competition of the year they will continue to train throughout November, December and January in preparation for 2017.”

“Both boys have the talent to go a long way in Men’s gymnastics, and may well one day represent NSW and Australia.”

“Gymnastics has been proven to be one of the best forms of fundamental movement and many successful international athletes have had a solid grounding in gymnastics before moving into other sports,” he said.

Scientific research is the only way to battle these statistics and lower them.

Every cent donated to fund this research helps, and another Medowie business is doing more than their part to assist in raising these muchneeded funds.

Sportz Cafe, at the Medowie Sports Centre on Ferodale Road, is set on making sure they give back to their community in any way possible, whether it be by offering web access to people having access problems at home who need to complete work, raising funds for the Rural fire service, or reaching further afield to National charity fundraisers.

Port Stephens Council spends $28 million on capital works projects

q Deputy Mayor, Cr Chris Doohan and Greg Kable (Acting Group Manager Facilities and Services) review plans for new road works at Abundance Road.

PORT Stephens Council’s capital works program for 2016 – 2017, costed at over $28 million, is in full swing with a range of infrastructure works across the local government area with everything from drains, roadworks, community buildings and traffic lights on the list.

Deputy Mayor Cr Chris Doohan is particularly delighted with the number of projects planned for the Medowie area including the stage one development of the Medowie Sports Complex valued at over $3.2 million as well as important upgrade works at Abundance Road between Industrial and Lisadell Roads.

“It’s great to see Abundance Road in this year’s capital works program as many local residents have complained about it to me,” Cr Doohan told News Of The Area.

“This work, costed at over $700,000, is well into the planning stage and involves liaison with other agencies such as Hunter Water Corporation, Telstra and Ausgrid, as well as Councils engineering and logistic staff.”

“Detailed planning is required months in advance before the heavy machinery

can roll out to do the work. It’s great to see and hear that this is now in full swing.”

“I’m looking forward to the work starting on the ground early next year,” the Deputy Mayor said.

The work will be undertaken on an 800m stretch of Abundance road and will include road widening and stabilisation, the extension of drainage culverts and driveway extensions and remediation.

Fashion parade comes to town

MEDOWIE RSL Women’s Auxiliary invites you to their exciting fundraiser.

The ladies of the Auxiliary have ask ‘Donna-lou clothing’ to host a fashion parade with their mobile clothing business.

Donna-lou, the mobile clothes that come to you, offers affordable women’s clothing from sizes 8 to 26.

The fashion parade will take place on Saturday 12 November, at 1pm at the Medowie Community Centre.

Cost for the parade is $15, but includes afternoon.

Clothing can be purchased

from Donna-lou on the day, and they will also have eftpos available.

Auxiliary member, Norma Creek, told News Of The Area, “Money raised on the day goes to RSL defence care for ex and current serving personnel, for social welfare services provided to them.”

The Medowie RSL Women’s Auxiliary meet on the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Bull ‘n’ Bush Hotel at 10am.

New Community Library Seeking Donations

LITERACY skills are widely considered to be important for children to gain in their formative years, and a new initiative in the Karuah community, which is also spreading into Medowie, aims to nurture the development

and love of reading.

Jim Batt, Medowie resident, is behind the initiative to establish a community library at the site of the Karuah Land Council.

The books and other resources will be available for all residents to use, and it is hoped that the new

community library will be used regularly by community members.

Mr Batt told Medowie News Of The Area, “Reading is really important for young children and not all children have the same opportunities to have access to reading material that is interesting

and relevant to them.”

“I am calling for donations to be made of books, board games, and durable toys so that the community library can open before Christmas.”

Local Community Invited to Vibrant Riverside Multicultural Festival

THE local community is invited to celebrate the annual Community Connect Day and Riverside Multicultural Fiesta this Saturday, 29 October from 11.00am-5.00pm at Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace.

The event celebrates cultural diversity in the local Port Stephens community through music, dance, art, and free workshops provided by local community groups, services, and small businesses.

This free event is aimed at family-level enjoyment and has a number of exciting workshops, including the Creating Curious Street Theatre workshop from 12noon for children and adults and culminating with a performance at 2.45pm.

Stephens, told Medowie News of the Area, “We have many cultures living in our community and it’s important to celebrate cultural diversity to enhance understanding of difference in cultures and customs, to promote tolerance and acceptance, to be educated about the variety of cultures in the community.”

This year’s event also has free workshops and demonstrations on Qui Going, Chinese culture and language, African drumming, Australian Aboriginal painting, wheelchair basketball, Capoeira Brazilian martial arts, the ever popular Bollywood and Salsa dancing styles, and a Junior Talent Quest at 4pm.

Tribute match for fallen Hero

q Richo’s Rugby Girls show true Rugby spirit for fallen Officer.

By Rachael VAUGHAN THEY say Rugby is the game they play in Heaven.

If this is true, then were certainly some front row seats in Heaven watching the Rugby community doing something very special last weekend.

Margaret (Margie) Richardson, wife of the late Geoffrey (Richo) Richardson, created a rugby wave of compassion and kindness when she asked for help to do something in memory of her husband.

Geoffrey Richardson was a Sergeant with the NSW Police force, who was killed on duty whilst responding to calls for help on a Police pursuit.

He, along with his rugby playing wife Margaret, was a big rugby fan, and the sport held a special place in their

relationship.

It was this memory that sparked the idea for Margy to put the call out for players in a women’s match at the Police Country Rugby Cup, held at Salamander Bay fields.

One of Margie’s dearest friends, Stacy Mathieson, told News Of The Area, “Because of Margie’s passion for rugby, she decided to honour Richo by putting the inaugural game together. She sent a call out on Facebook and received a lot of interest. From that, she put together a Facebook group where she organised training and logistics.”

“Margie’s amazing work colleagues then also organised Richo’s Rugby Ball for the evening after the games, including raffle prizes and auctions both online and live,” Stacy said.

They called themselves Richo’s Rugby Girls, the ladies were inspirational and came together to support Margie, many had never played rugby.

It took real courage to take the field.

There were many tears after they respectfully observed a minute silence for Sergeant Geoff Richardson.

Team Coach, Ian Allwood, told News Of The Area, “It was a very special start, which then led to the girls taking the field, where they proceeded to belt the daylights out of each other in the true spirit of rugby.” “ I was privileged to be the coach and I’m so proud of them.”

“This group is a fine example of the rugby family and police family - Margie scored a classic front rower

pick and drive rugby try, her first ever try in her rugby career, it made the game even more special,” he said.

Stacy spoke of the outpouring of support to Margie and her family and Richo’s devastating and horrific passing, and paid tribute to them.

“Margie is the strongest, most loving person there is She is such a protective and fiercely passionate mum and friend.”

“This game showed me what true friendship meant.

The support and compassion Marg and Richo would always show to others, was reflected in the vast numbers of family, friends and community members who came along and celebrated Richo’s life.”

Ironman is a gruelling 3.8km swim, 180km bike then 42.2km run.

Kona is the birth place of Ironman and had been a dream of Pat’s to race there since starting Ironman in 2012.

The conditions are punishing.

Pat Hay told News Of The Area, “At 8am in the morning the road can melt your shoes.”

The swim starts with all competitors treading water for 15 minutes as the traditional opening commences. For most people

this alone would be enough to test one’ strength.

Pat is a tall man and was dragged under twice in the swim.

He trains up to 30 hours a week.

“The support of the community has been amazing - Everywhere I go people say congratulations and comment on how inspiring I have been, it’s wonderful,” Pat said.

The community also rallied around Pat to make his dream come true and Pat sends thanks to ITravel of Medowie and Salamander Cycles in particular.

The trip to Hawaii was a

family affair.

Pat and wife Bec and two boys as well as father, parents in law, three sisters, uncle and close friends all travelled with him, after making a wild claim in Port Macquarie that if Pat qualified for Hawaii they would come too.

They kept their promise.

Pat trains with Top Coach Functional Fitness, Kellys Swim Academy and does a lot of early lonely hours on his bike.

This race pushed Pat to his limits and there were moments he wanted to give up.

Another player in the team, Lindsey Corke, also spoke to News Of The Area about the comradeship of the team, most of whom had only just met, but also the special bond between Margie and

Stacy.

“They’ve been friends for over twenty years, it’s actually glorious watching them together - It’s the kind of friendship you hope for your daughter to experience,” she said.

News Of The Area sends a heartfelt congratulations to Margie and her ‘Richo’s Rugby Girls’ for coming together and honouring a true community hero in such a fine manner.

Wirreanda Teacher has many talents

WIRREANDA Public School teacher, Pat Hay, is a man of many talents.

He, like most school teachers, worked through his school holidays.

However, instead of the usual marking, programming and planning for the new term, he added a world championship level triathlon to his list of achievements.

Pat Hay qualified in Port Macquarie for the World Ironman Championships in Hawaii.

They were held on 8 October.

Squash court opening MEDOWIE Sports Centre have officially kicked off work on the new section of their stageby-stage redevelopment of the Ferodale complex.

Earlier in the year, News Of The Area reported on the opening of ‘Plus Fitness 24/7’ gym, Medowie Munchkins Creche and Sportz Café within the Medowie Sports Centre.

Next on the line of exciting new ventures for the centre is the refurbishment and renovation of the original Medowie Squash Courts.

News Of The Area met with management and guests at the opening of works on the courts.

The refurbishment of the original courts is in good hands, a Melbourne based company ‘CourtTech’, who have had a wealth of experience, is not only overhauling the courts, but will be playing a hand in

continued development of the sport of Squash in Medowie.

The CourtTech company (CourtTech.biz) is the only agents in Oceania who can build or renovate courts using a new technology to give back longevity to the courts.

CourtTech is owned by club player Cameron Dalley and Sarah Fitz-Gerald, who brings with her a wealth of experience, and an impressive achievement list in the sport of Squash.

Sarah is a five-time World Champion, Commonwealth Games medallist and World Masters Champion, among other titles and awards.

Sarah has been playing since she was 6, professionally since she was 18, a Sports Australia Hall of Fame member, and a former member of the AIS and VIC Institute of Sport.

Sarah and Cameron will be playing an ambassador role with the new Courts, and hope

to visit Medowie a few times a year to meet with young athletes and run training days.

Colin Carter, the Medowie Sports Centre Owner, is looking forward to the courts opening, as well as a number of further developments and facilities coming in the next 12 months.

These new facilities will include, but are not limited to, a pool and training spaces that will be available to local trainers to run classes in any number of sports and disciplines.

Centre manager, Steve Bentley, told News Of The Area, “We are looking forward to providing a healthy lifestyle service for Medowie that caters to everyone’s needs.”

“Our slogan is Live Life Healthy, and we are moving forward with that solely in mind.”
