FOR most people, ANZAC Day is a day for reflection, a day to remember the sacrifices of servicemen and women who played a part in campaigns fought around the world over the course of history.

For the children of serving defence members, the day holds a special extra

sentiment as they not only deal with the absence of a parent, but also the concerns associated with deployment.

News Of The Area met with some of these very special children as they recounted their experiences.

International Firefighters Day, also named St Florian’s Day after the patron saint of firefighters, was created in

1999 after the tragic deaths of five Victorian firefighters battling a bushfire near Linton, about 120 kilometres west of Melbourne, in 1998.

For firefighters at Medowie Rural Fire Brigade (RFB), the day provides an opportunity to pay respect to their fallen colleagues.

The couple have three children, aged five, four and eight months, When asked about their Dad, the eldest children, Jack and Georgia, said they wanted to tell him, “We can’t wait for Charlie’s first birthday because it means you will be home, we miss you Daddy.”

Their father is due home the week Charlie turns one.

Carmen, mum to Charlie, Jackson and William, said, “My husband is currently away on deployment overseas for the next seven months, so he misses most birthdays and other important events or milestones in our family life with our boys.”

“We love him so much and are very proud of what he does and what he has given up for us.”

“Without the help of some amazing friends and people within the Medowie community we would be lost,” she said.

FOR four years, ‘Lemon Jam’ has rocked the foreshore of Lemon Tree Passage on a monthly basis.

News Of The Area was shocked to discover how many locals had not heard of this fantastic event, so has decided to right this wrong and shine a spotlight on the ‘something for everyone’ community event.

Lemon Jam is a free, all ages, monthly music event held on the waterfront at beautiful Lemon Tree Passage, Port Stephens.

“We saw the event advertised on social media last week, and it was the first we had heard of it.”

The fashion parade will take place Tuesday 2 May at 10am at the Medowie Community Centre.

Fashions will be provided by ‘Donna-lou clothing’, a mobile clothing business based in Toukley.

Donna-lou, the mobile clothes that come to you, offers affordable women’s clothing from sizes 8 to 26.

Clothing can be purchased from Donna-lou on the day, and they will also have EFTPOS available.

Lemon Jam had live music, kids’ activities, face painting, raffles, food and there were lots of families having fun and relaxing on chairs and rugs around the grounds.

Children also enjoyed the fantastic adjacent playground and enclosed sea swimming pool.

Playing live on the day at this month’s Lemon Jam was ‘The Broke Boys”, a well known band from the Hunter Valley.

They had the kids up and dancing, and impressed the crowds relaxing in the sunshine.

Forgive and Forget Key to Long Marriage

By Simone JOHNSON THIS week marks the 64th wedding anniversary of Salt Ash couple Neville and Edith Jelfs.

Celebrating on 18 April, the couple had a leisurely breakfast at a local Salt Ash business before going to Raymond Terrace for lunch.

Neville and Edith originally met in Parkes in 1950 before getting married three years later.

Now 88 and 85, they were 24 and 21 at the time.

Edith told News Of The Area, “In those days, we got married for keeps.”

“Divorces were not in our thinking at the time and marriage was a very big commitment,” Neville said.

Since marrying, the couple have welcomed four children, one grandchild, one great grandchild, travelled

around the world three times and visited 44 different countries.

Long marriages run in the family, with both Neville and Edith’s parents also having celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries in the past.

The couple’s relationship is currently the longest they know of within their family and friends.

“The key to a long marriage is patience and forgetting issues after they arise, as they are never that important,” Neville said.

“Not holding grudges and forgiving and forgetting is another key ingredient to a happy marriage,” he said.

The couple have had big anniversaries in the past, going on holidays and travelling, however, they chose to stay closer to home this year.

By Rachael VAUGHAN MEDOWIE RSL Women’s Auxiliary members have had a great honour bestowed upon them, with their hard work recognised on a special quilt to be hung in the Australian War Memorial.

On the 31 March 2017, Norma Creek and Greetje Sargent, two members of the Medowie RSL Women’s Auxiliary, travelled to Canberra with Jessica Linsley, the granddaughter of another Medowie RSL member.

They were invited to attend the ceremony and presentation of the ‘Lest We Forget’ quilt, which was presented to Dr Brendan Nelson, the director of the Australian War Memorial.

Greetje Sargent told News Of The Area, “NSW RSL Central Council Women’s Auxiliary had the idea of getting our auxiliaries to band together on a project to make a quilt depicting Australia’s involvement in War.” The ‘Lest We Forget’ quilt project was launched, and 300 blocks were sent out to

all auxiliaries in Australia.

Enough blocks were completed and returned to make eight quilts and two cushions.

Ms Sargent said “Some of the quilts were raffled and raised valuable funds which make a difference to the lives of many defence families in need.”

“Medowie RSL Women’s Auxiliary were thrilled to see that their block was included in the special quilt that was chosen to be presented to the War Memorial and hung there in a display.”

“Our block showed a cloth photo of the RSL rose, and a poem written by a Turkish mother who had lost her son, which was embroidered over the top by Jessica,” she said.

The women who attended from Medowie RSL reported that the presentation ceremony was a very special event, and they were pleased to be included.

This is truly an honour for Medowie RSL and News Of The Area congratulates the women involved and acknowledges their efforts.

Medowie Welcomes New Priest

THERE was standing room only at the service commissioning Reverend David Davies on Thursday, 20 April at the Williamtown Anglican church.

Commissioned by Assistant Bishop of Newcastle, the Right Reverend Peter Stuart, the small church was bursting at the seams with people there to experience the occasion.

Warmly welcomed by the Williamtown, Medowie, and Mallabula Anglican parishioners, Reverend David Davies brings a sense of humour, his love of soccer, playing the guitar, and service to God with him to the local community.

For parishioners, the new Reverend is especially welcome after having experienced rapid changeovers of clergy in recent years.

Local and long term member of the Williamtown congregation, Mr Ken Reinhard, told News Of The Area, “It will be wonderful to get continuity of ministry.”

“It’s been wonderful having a locum (temporary Priest) to help us but it will be marvellous to have a full time Priest for sustained leadership and to get us motivated again.”

Joined by his wife, Neridah, they are looking forward to their time in the parish and meeting local residents.

Although having only arrived recently, Reverend Davies told News Of The Area, “It’s such a lovely place to be.”

“I am looking forward to getting out and meeting members of the community.”

Acknowledging that not all news about Christian churches has been positive, Reverend Davies said he hopes to be able to tell the community, “About God and how He loves you, for all people to get a chance to hear that.”

The 2011 Census results for the Port Stephens Local Area showed that over 19,000 of the approximately 60,000 respondents identify as Anglican, a large portion of the population by any measure.

Remembering the Original Digger

THE first ANZAC Day was celebrated in 1916 on the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp’s (ANZAC) landing at Gallipoli, Turkey in 1915.

The biography here, is based on research by local authors John Gillam and Yvonne Fletcher, and features local World War I Light Horse Trooper Wilfred Wilkinson.

Born in Bowna in 1895, Wilkinson was just 19 years old when he enlisted locally in the 1st Light Horse.

He would go on to fight in the famous Light Horse battle, the Battle of Beersheba, which the Australians won.

Wilkinson died, Killed In Action on 18 June 1918.

But before that, Wilkinson saw quite a bit of military action, was wounded in battle, convalesced and included a one-time stint

of illness related to lifestyle choices of the stereotypical larrikin digger.

His first experience of front line conflict came on 7 August 1915 when the 1st Light Horse charged the hills of Lone Pine.

Of the 200 men, only 50 survived this horrific assault.

After convalescing from battle wounds, he returned on 1 March 1916 to the 1st Light Horse Regiment now based in Heliopolis after the Gallipoli evacuation.

This would be a very different war to the one he had fought at Gallipoli.

The light horsemen were now mounted and eager to avenge their losses at Gallipoli.

Turkish soldiers would find them an even more formidable enemy.

Wilkinson continued to participate in numerous battles throughout 1916, 1917, and 1918 in the Middle East region.

history buffs will know, Beersheba fell on 31 October 1917, allowing the British and dominion forces to outflank and roll-up the Turkish defensive line.

On 18 June, 1918 the regimental headquarters of the 1st Light Horse Regiment was attacked with 75mm shells killing one man, our local hero Wilfred Wilkinson.

The Marquez family and their long history of farming the land and producing high quality produce, have combined talents with local natural organic food wholesalers The Natural Food Collective, to come together

in a one-stop organic shop.

Nicole O’Neill (nee Marquez) shared her excitement with News Of The Area.

“Four days down and I can’t even begin to explain how overwhelmed we have been at the amount of interest and customers we have had come through the doors,” she said.

“This support reaffirms our belief that organic natural and sustainable produce can,

and should be, accessible and affordable.”

“It’s just been amazing and we are so excited and energised to keep on going.”

The focus of The Natural Food Collective is on natural, chemical-free and organic produce, as well as wholefoods that are accessible and affordable.

Ms O’Neill said “We have worked hard to broaden our range of available products, working with certified

organic farmers to bring Medowie a wider range of fresh produce.”

“We source these from as many local farmers as possible, and are very selective with wholesalers of our wholefoods who work directly with farmers and go direct to country of origin.”

“Our focus is on providing wholefoods from farmers who use ethical and sustainable practices, and who are as passionate about their product as we are,” she said.

You are the delightful Katniss Everdeen, with cute plaits and olive skin, and your senior colleague is the female equivalent of President Snow, plotting each day with new levels of filth and depravity to test your limits.

If she has been in the workplace for many years, you’ll never get rid of her.

Her sense of entitlement is not based on merit, but on longevity.

Like a long-term partner, she also feels very comfortable in her own skin.

So comfortable, in fact, that I fear the keyboard crumbs and whistling nose breathing are just the start of more sinister vices – gouging the butter container instead of gently scraping, coffee granules in the sugar, an empty toilet roll on the holder, soup slurping and tooth grinding.

Oh, the horrors these actions bring to the more obsessive and compulsive among us.

Perhaps you need to demarcate your workspace. Or print out a cleanliness affirmation and stick it in a prominent place.

Something like: “I shall tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, habitation or thought” ought to do it.

If her grotty ways continue, arm yourself with an arsenal of cleaning products and hunt her down, Katniss style.

Rescue Pet of the Week

THIS week’s Rescue Pet of the Week is a sweet female cat, who at only two years old will have had three litters by the time she is adopted.

She has endured more than a young cat should have been through, and highlights the dire need to desex animals to stop unwanted litters, and the unnecessary stress of litters on cats who are often too young.

This gorgeous girl came into care three weeks ago with Kitty Rescue Project, along with her two kittens, Lenny and Loui.

News Of The Area featured her two kittens in an edition of our Rescue Pet of the Week, and we were pleased to learn they were adopted together by a loving home.

Named Skully, she was quite malnourished and anaemic when she came into care, so she has needed a lot of tender loving care to get her healthy.

Amanda from the Kitty Rescue Project told News Of The Area, “We have been working on getting her health sorted, and giving her a much better life.”

“We have realised now that she was already pregnant again when she came into care, so now we are working

She won’t be ready for adoption until she has had her last litter, but enquiries to become her forever family are welcome.

News Of The Area will endeavour to share news of their arrival and progress when they are ready for new homes.

The KITTY Rescue

Project rescues whole litters, cares for them within their volunteer foster homes, and ensures that all the necessary veterinary work is completed before adopting them to loving families.

Male kittens are $200 and Female kittens are $250.

The adoption fee includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments.

The KITTY Rescue Project is also looking for new volunteers to help foster new litters and older cats.

Under lights, it was the Marauders first home game for the year against Beaches.

Medowie turned on a fantastic night of local Rugby, with a great family-friendly atmosphere and a large crowd turning out to support their boys.

The club is fast becoming known for their home game

experience, with the whole club banding together to put on great host events.

The community of Medowie is getting behind their club in fantastic numbers, and the ‘fun for everyone’ approach the club has when planning their home games is ensuring everyone has a great time.

Medowie Rugby Club President Dwayne Murphy told News Of The Area, “We’re really proud of the club atmosphere, and we work hard to run a club that is family friendly and inclusive.”
