Lions Youth Of The Year

THE Lions Club of Medowie this week hosted the Lions Club Youth of the Year for another year.

Jayden Maidstone from Tilligerry took out the top spot, and was named Lions Club Youth Of The Year.

Maddison Woodcock from Medowie was named as the runner up.

The Lions Club of Australia hosts the yearly competition to assist young people to improve their skills before entering the workforce or other endeavours.

A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its winners.

By emphasising these qualities, it hopes to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the

Entrants first participate in a private interview for 45 minutes, where they are assessed on leadership, sporting and/or cultural activities, citizenship and community involvement, academic, general knowledge and personality.

Entrants then participate in the public speaking section, where they are given two impromptu questions to

English, science, maths (extension level), PE, health and PBE. She has also received a number of academic awards.

Peter Delphin and Alex Hall provided the musical entertainment during the interlude at the event.

Peter is a year 11 student from Hunter River High School and likes all aspects of music and performing.

Alex attends Irrawang High School and is an accomplished musician.

Water supply project reaches its final stages FROM Page 1

2015, and Hunter Water has since designed and constructed a reticulated water network in the Investigation Area allowing almost 200 properties access to safe drinking water from its system.

With the water supply infrastructure completed as scheduled in June 2017, Hunter Water has since worked on behalf of the Department of Defence with individual property owners to project manage domestic plumbing works required to connect to the new system.

Jim Bentley said he was pleased some relief had arrived for residents in the area.

“Providing drinking water to the Williamtown Investigation Area has been a priority project for Hunter Water since it was first announced by the NSW Government, and we’re pleased to see our high quality, safe drinking water available to residents, and the students at Salt Ash Public School, for the first time.

“Hunter Water has consulted with each property owner to determine their personal needs when it comes to the style of connection at their property. Everyone has different requirements that we’ve worked to meet: for example while some residents have the connection plumbed directly to their homes, others have opted to

simply have a Town Water tap installed in the front yard.

“With more properties connecting each day, we’re expecting all those who have opted to join the system to be connected by Christmas. We’re pleased to provide Williamtown residents with high quality drinking water into the future,” he said.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said the water supply project was a direct outcome of listening to the local community.

“Williamtown residents have had their lives turned upside down, and many have been relying on bottled water for drinking after they learned their tanks and bores may be contaminated.

“The consistent advice the NSW Government has received is that the most effective and immediate way to support the

Lantern making workshops

IF you haven’t heard about the Illuminate Boomerang Park Festival coming to Raymond Terrace, then you need to read on and jot down the date and information in your calendar.

The Illuminate Boomerang Park Festival will take place on Saturday 18 November at Boomerang

Park in Raymond Terrace.

Port Stephens Council is making sure that all areas of Port Stephens are included in the special event, and have been visiting venues, markets and community groups to run lantern making stalls with locals to bring to the festival.

The latest venue on the list of travelling lantern workshops was Medowie

Markets this month.

The hands-on workshop was a hit, and children and adults alike had a ball making their own lanterns to bring on 18 November.

The employment landscape has changed dramatically over time and it can come as quite a shock to realise the hoops you have to jump through to be accepted into various organisations, be they private or public.

I think we can all remember the first job we ever applied for, and how easy the application process was in the good old days.

My first job was as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant.

I had been to the beach and was walking home (sarong, bare feet) when I saw a sign that said, ‘Waitress wanted.’

I opened the door and noticed a man in the corner, who was sound asleep. He had formed a bed out of three dining chairs. I woke him up (brave or stupid) and said I was interested in the job.

He asked me two questions: 1. Can you work Saturday nights? “Yes.” 2. Do you own shoes? “Yes.” I started that weekend.

Let’s fast forward several (many) years.

Now, in order to prove your worth there is a multi-step application process.

First you need to write an application that gives detailed responses to 16 selection criteria.

Your resumé has to be rewritten for each new role, as though you are a bespoke coat that has to be redesigned with each new position.

Next comes the testing process: there’s cognitive tests to ensure you know which shape comes next in a pattern, then psychological tests to prove you have a personality that is nothing like our current political leaders.

This is before the face-to-face interview that involves role plays, written responses to scenarios and team building exercises with the other applicants in a tactic reminiscent of The Hunger Games.

After all of that, if you finally get the job, you’ll be wanting to take your first sick day due to physical and mental exhaustion.

THE Vinnies Centre at Medowie opened recently in the Ferodale Plaza with great fanfare and an exciting selection of pre-loved clothing and household goods.

The local community has embraced the Vinnies shop, but they are in need of more volunteers to work in the store.

Karen SillsDavis, Vinnies Retail Coordinator, said a shortage of volunteers is having an impact on the shop and on those who are shopping for great value clothing and household items.

“If you love working in an environment with

vintage fashion, antiques and collectibles, and you would like to donate some spare time to help Vinnies then we would love to hear from you,” Karen said.

All of the funds raised by our Vinnies shops are used to provide assistance to people in need in the local community.

“We are looking for female or male volunteers of all ages (15+) to help out.”

“By assisting us in the shop you’ll be raising funds that go back to the local community to give a hand up to people experiencing disadvantage.”

Christmas Cheer for Soldiers DEFENCE personnel serving overseas at Christmas will be greatly missing their family and friends.

There is a way to let them know we are thinking of our serving members, and thanking them for their service during the festive season.

Care packages can be sent free of charge to the Middle East, East Timor and the Solomon Islands so long as they strictly comply with Australia Post guidelines.

Packages can be sent to either male or female personnel, or even to an explosive detection dog.

In order to qualify for free postage, care packages can weigh no more than 2kg (cubic weight limit) and should be packaged within a “BM” sized box, which are available from Australia Post for approximately two dollars.

Choose from one of three serving destinations for male or female soldiers, Solomon Islands, East Timor or the Middle East and make the first line of your parcel to your choice of ‘An Australian Soldier/Sailor/Airman/ Airwoman – Female/Male’.

You Can’t Fight, You’re a Girl!

THE title of the latest book by Medowie historian, author, and school teacher Mrs Yvonne Fletcher, and her co-author Mr John Gillam immediately captures the

imagination of potential readers.

“You can’t fight, you’re a girl!” is a picture book that tells the adventure of fearless woman, Maud Butler.

The book presents an

accurate historical account of Miss Butler who wanted to contribute to Australia’s involvement in World War I. A rugged woman, she twice stowed away in a ship, dressed as a male soldier so that she, too, could fight in the war.

A woman before her times, she was discovered both times and turned away in a most humiliating way.

She was then rejected from the Red Cross as she was

carefully select the plants they grow and sell, ensuring their choices are perfect for Medowie’s environment.

If you could benefit from some gardening advice to help you gardens flourish, the members of Medowie Garden Club will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Medowie Garden Club secretary Christina Voigt told News Of The Area, “We are so excited to bring the plant sale to the residents of Medowie again.” “‘This is a great chance to come and chat to enthusiastic gardeners, buy some plants and support a wonderful community group.”

The proceeds from the plant sales are used to benefit members, by subsidising club activities, such as outings to places of interest to the avid gardeners.

The Medowie Garden Club holds meetings on the first

Saturday of each month, with the exception of January.

Gardeners and residents of Medowie are always welcome to attend.

The meetings are held at alternating member’s residences each month, who take turns hosting the club and giving advice from their own gardens with tips and solutions that have helped them.

There are also outings arranged to open gardens and to growers markets, where growers are invited to give a talk on their speciality.

The wet weather last week has ensured the plants are in fine form, and ready to be purchased at the plant sale, so come along and grab a bargain or two.

THE Medowie Garden Club are back and blooming with their spring garden sale.

The sale is on 28 October at the Medowie Community Centre Car Park from 8am till 1pm.

The Club members have polished their luminescent green thumbs, and have prepared a garden smorgasboard of plants at very reasonable prices for the public to buy to support the club.

For those with less than green thumbs, the club will also be running a sausage sizzle with bacon and egg rolls included.

The Garden Club regularly holds these sales to align with spring and autumn, to give locals the perfect opportunity to gather seasonally appropriate plants.

Author Mrs Fletcher told News Of The Area, “There are very few picture books on this topic that are told from a female perspective.”

to use the Centenary of Anzac logo on its cover.

Maud is applauded for being a woman with grit and courage, never giving up on her dreams and spirit to help the best way she knew how.

Co-author, Mr Gillam told News Of The Area, “The narrative text is intended to engage the empathy of an older reader and their life’s experiences.”

“Children will find inspiration in Maud’s story

of determination in pursuing her dreams and succeeding.”

Aimed at upper primary school students, the book also has free lesson ideas mapped to the curriculum.

Everyone is invited to attend the book launch to be held on Saturday, 4 November at 10.30am at Kurri Kurri Primary School.

Tastes at the Bay Ambassador

q Emilie Hardes, Mrs Galaxy Australia 2017 and the Ambassador for the 2017 Tastes at the Bay Festival.

“The new ‘Taster’s Trail’ event will see attendees treated to tasting plates from five local restaurants, winding up at the Seabreeze Hotel for a finishing cocktail.”

“Port Stephens truly is a foodies heaven, and it’s lovely to see events showcase this,” she said.

There’s cheese making classes, chocolate making classes with “Madame Cocoa”, not to to mention the Winemakers Dinner at the Nelson Bay Golf Club on the Friday night.

There will be food and wine stalls along the foreshore, with plenty of seating available, and a great atmosphere listening to jazz, folk and a little rock.

This is truly a festival with something for everyone, and Ms Hardes is bound to enjoy assisting the Tomaree Business Chamber in ensuring the event is a success.

PORT Stephens Council has been selected as a finalist for ‘Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Culture – for big business’ in the 2017 SafeWork NSW Awards.

The awards recognise businesses and workers with the highest standards of workplace health and safety and return to work outcomes in the state.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s a huge honour to have Port Stephens Council’s strong commitment to safety recognised.

“As a Council, we’ve worked hard to build a true safety culture. Safety is one of Port Stephens Council’s core values and we are committed to seeing workers go home in the same, or better, physical and mental condition than when they arrived at work,” Ms Le Grange said.

“We’ve made vast improvements to our

safety practices over the past six years, resulting in less workplace injuries, less severe injuries and a reduction in workers compensation premiums – saving Council over a million dollars per year.

“The awards judging process is very competitive with 160 entries, so being a finalist in these awards is a huge honour in itself, as it means Council is one in the best businesses in the state when it comes to safety,” she said.

Ms Le Grange says that while attitudes to safety must be driven as an organisation, it has been a real team effort.

“All of our workers have been the driving force behind this cultural change, and they are to be congratulated for their efforts,” she said.

The 2017 SafeWork NSW Awards winners will be announced this Thursday 26 October 2017 at Doltone House in Sydney.

Festival Comes Together

IT looked for a while that the 2017 Tilligerry Festival might not get off the ground but experienced businesswoman Kathy Davidson has pulled it all together and it promises to be one of the best on record.

“There are some 20 individual activities we’ve organised for the day in and around Henderson Park,” she said.

“The big $1.3 million makeover of the waterfront makes it an even more

attractive venue for this much anticipated community event,”she added.

Saturday 18 November is when it all happens and the action starts at 8.30am.

Included in the attractions are a display of animals from ‘Oakvale’ at Salt Ash; a sailpast and ‘Blessing of the Fleet’; Santa arriving by boat; the Murrook Dancers; the ‘Lemon Ukelypts’ (ukulele band); a Fire Circus Workshop; Diamond Dancers and much more.

Girl Guides Market Day Free CCTV for Medowie

THE Medowie Girl Guides put on a fine show last weekend with their Medowie Guide District Market.

There were stalls galore, showcasing a variety of new and used items and speciality stalls.

The garage sale component of the market day supported the ‘2017 Garage sale trails reuse revolution’, an initiative designed to reduce landfill.

The Girl Guides prepared food and drinks for sale, with their delicious Devonshire scones the talk of the day.

The girls also worked

hard manning the raffle prize table, selling tickets to win one of ten fantastic prizes donated by local businesses.

All tickets sales from their wonderful raffle are going towards the Medowie Guides participation in the 2018 Sydney Jamboree.

The Jamboree is an International week long camp for Guides from all over the World, where the girls will challenge themselves daily, while making new friends and learning life skills.

Elizabeth Keeley from Medowie Girl Guides told News Of The Area, “I would to thank Rachael Baas, our assistant district manager at

Medowie, for organising and running another successful fundraiser for our Jamboree Participants- which was not possible without the help of our Jamboree parents, Guides and Leaders.”

“Also, a big thank you to our community members who dropped by and browsed the stalls and enjoyed our freshly home baked scones for morning tea.”

“It is a great learning experience for our Guides, as they are involved with the set up, clean up and participating on the day with sales, food preparation and service,” she said.

FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Metford Neighbourhood Watch, Medowie Neighbourhood watch has begun fundraising for some important pieces of equipment that will potentially benefit the residents of Medowie.

Medowie Neighbourhood Watch members are currently in the process of raising the funds needed to purchase portable CCTV cameras that will then be able to be loaned to Medowie residents free of charge.

Any resident who wishes to obtain footage of anything happening on their property will be able to loan a camera, and obtain footage to provide to police.

Founding member of the recently relaunched Medowie Neighbourhood Watch, Geoff Dingle, told News Of The Area, “The cameras, while reasonably priced, are an extra cost many families cannot afford.”

Taekwondo State Championships

LAST weekend 15 members of the energetic Medowiebased Imugi Taekwondo group competed in the NSW State Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

Competing with groups from across NSW, the Imugi team were awarded a swag of awards.

In total, eight NSW Championships were awarded to the group, with 13 Titles between them.

The final tally for the Imugi group was 13 Gold, 7 Silver, 7 Bronze and 3 Fourthplaces.

Fourteen members of the team will compete at the National Championships in December.

News Of The Area spoke with four Imugi members.

Kenya Brown, 13, a

student at Medowie Christian School came third and fourth in her competition.

She has been practising Taekwondo for the past two years.

Kenya said participating in the State Titles, “Is a bit scary at first but then you get used to it and it’s fun.”

“I do six competitions each year.”

Shonique Goossens, a year 10 student at Irrawang High School, was awarded State Champion and two second places.

She has been doing Taekwondo for almost five years and told News Of The Area that she enjoys Taekwondo for the, “Learning part, I love doing the forms.”

“I would like to be able to pass Taekwondo on to others.”

Bryce Tuppurainen, a year 10 student at Medowie

Christian School was awarded three first places and has been doing Taekwondo for four years.

He said, “There is a lot of energy at the State Championships.”

“I really enjoy Taekwondo, it’s part of my personality, I’ve been doing it for so long.”

Tom Gillespie, a year 6 student at Medowie Public School, has been doing Taekwondo for four years; he was delighted to be at the Championships.

Tom, who also has Cerebral Palsy and Asperger’s Syndrome, said, “It was my first time competing at the State titles and I felt great competing.”

When asked what he likes about Taekwondo, Tom said, “I like to do it because I feel at home and I also get to be with Dad.”

Hunter River High Bowls Champs HUNTER River High School has taken out the ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ regional final, earning them the 2017 title of the NSW champions.

The Hunter Education Region is one of ten across New South Wales, extending north to Taree (Manning District), Maitland and to its west

(Hunter District), Greater Newcastle (Newcastle District) and south to Lake Munmorah (Lakes District).

The Hunter high schools ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ competition targets some seventy schools in an open competition for both male and female Years seven to eleven students.

The team from Hunter River High School comprised of students from Years eight

and ten, Ryan Jonovski, Blair Soars, Kane Chester and Zac Nicholls, who on Monday 16 October played and won the 2017 Finals of the ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ competition at Lambton Bowling Club, under the coaching and supervision of Mr Guider.

Mr Guider explains, “The High School Lawn Bowls Competition, Let’s Play Bowls, is in its third year and

The four person competition is played over two sets of eight ends, which creates the opportunity for any side to win.

FOUNDATION member of Tanilba and Districts Golf Club Dot Hissey has seen no problems with the integrated golf played there over the last 30 plus years.

Dot, who carries badge number 25, was the first

female president of a golf club in the Hunter Region and one of many elected women directors since the club began operating as a nine hole course.

Today it has expanded to a full 18 holes and is popular with locals and tourists alike.

“There is no q

discrimination at Tanilba and ladies have played in the Saturday competitions from day one,” she said.

“We all pay the same membership fees and have equal rights,” she added.

Dot was one of many locals who literally carved the course out of virgin bushland during the ‘70s and ‘80s.

There was a great feeling of camaraderie,”she said.

Former Ladies’ Captain Carole Walker said that it was all about give and take and common sense: “Women accepted prizes from the men’s competitions but we didn’t insist on representing the club in traditional district ‘men’s’ events.

“They in turn never played in our special ‘ladies’ tournaments,” she said.

“Indeed, they didn’t ask to play in our Thursday

competitions during my time.

If they had, there would not have been a problem,” she added.

Dot, who has also been a member of Newcastle Golf Club for some 14 years, has been watching on with interest as the push from lady golfers to play amongst the traditional ‘all male’ Saturday field gathers momentum.

Then it was off to State Championships in September and again she won all three events.

“Following her performances at State PSSA she has been selected in the NSW Athletics team to compete in the Pacific Schools Games in Adelaide in December this year in the 100m, long jump and 4x100m relay, where there will be athletes from over 15 countries,” John said.

THE region has a young champion in its midst; her name Keira McGregor.

Keira has just become the 11 years NSW State Champion for long jump after competing at last week’s All Primary Schools Athletics Carnival at Olympic Park in Sydney.

“Keira won with a personal best distance of 5.03

metres which is just outside of the NSW State record,” proud Dad John McGregor said.

Along with her Gold medal Keira added a Silver coming second in the 100 metre final in a time of 13.1 seconds, being narrowly beaten in a photo finish.

She also came sixth in the 200 metre final.

It’s been a hectic few

months for Keira on the athletics track and there’s still more competition to come before the end of the year.

The young student from Medowie Christian School competed in the Christian School Sports Association State Championships in August, winning three events she entered the 100 metre, 200 metre and long jump.
