“We make and repair things for ourselves but we get great satisfaction in putting something back into the community by making new items, restoring and repairing furniture, fixing and repairing toys or just giving advice to people who don’t know how to go about the handyman problems they have,” Col Magick said.

“Quite often we consult one another as some members have expertise in special areas and we often work as a team on a project,” he said.

‘Happy to fix’ for restoration men of Tilligerry Men’s Shed who will do the job for little cost and fuss

“I was particularly proud of a restoration project I did recently.

A family dumped the contents of their deceased mother’s home in a skip but one of them rescued a beautiful 1920s folding card table. I was able to bring this little piece of history back to life.”

The men’s shed is located at Mallabula next door to the Port Stephens Council works depot near the ovals.

It operates between the hours of 8am and noon from Tuesdays to Fridays.

In a meeting held during the week in Dungog Council chambers, a vote was taken of 4-3 against a motion to pursue a voluntary merger with Port Stephens.

Port Stephens has had the decision handed to them and it is now time for future planning, September’s local council election and creating the best future for Port Stephens.

Councillors for Port Stephens have been vocal on both sides of the fence.

MEDOWIE Mayor Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “I feel sorry for the good people of Dungog. It would have been the right moral thing to do, for Port Stephens to help our neighbour, and to think that Port Stephens Council’s own General Manager had to educate the Dungog councillors on the honest state of the situation is amazing.”

“For Port Stephens residents, we have now lost the opportunity to merge with a good neighbour, that welcomed us with open arms.”

“It was Dungog that assisted with the delay on the decision of Port Stephens and Newcastle, and this delay was the lifeline given to us to stop

the forced merger.”

“We may not be so lucky next time because, Liberal or Labor, forced mergers are always a good possibility, and now our head is back on the chopping block,” he said.

Councillor Geoff Dingle spoke to News Of The Area about the decision.

“It appears that Dungog Councillors are smart enough to realise that a voluntary merger with Port Stephens Council doesn’t cut the mustard and have fought through a raft of intimidation and political pressure to take up Port Stephens Council’s offer to merge.”

“Unless the State government is prepared to direct serious levels of support funding to deal with Dungog’s infrastructure backlog, then a voluntary amalgamation is a bad deal for both Port Stephens and Dungog ratepayers when we are all left to sort out and manage the financial burden resulting.”

“After September’s election we can all take a deep breath and start a respectful dialogue with our constituents and the State government about what any future amalgamation might look like and can it be equitably funded,” he said.

Mallabula Mystery Tour

“FANTASTIC!” This is how 90 year old Fred from Newcastle described the Mallabula waterfront when his Nova Care mini van stopped for morning tea recently.

He was part of group of twenty or so city residents who were having a day out as part of a Novo Care initiative which assists elderly and incapacitated people.

Nova Care works under the umbrella of the NSW government and is a nonprofit organisation.

Coordinator Ken Jury said that such outings gave the client’s social contact,

interesting and varied outings and new experiences they would not otherwise have.

“Our day out at Tilligerry was a ‘mystery’ tour. It added a bit of excitement and expectation to their lives.”

“We pick them up from their homes and for just $25 our clients get a sightseeing tour of your town, morning tea at the foreshore and a slap up lunch at Club Lemon Tree!”

“Other popular outings are visits to the movies, trips to historical sites, the vineyards and shows.”

Medowie History Morning Tea

A MORNING of good food, new friendships and memories was had when new Medowie residents Francess Zahra and Mark Tipper hosted a group of passionate Medowie history buffs over a high tea.

In attendance with

Francess and Mark were Coralie Mather, Joan Muir, Geswalda de Gabriele and original Wirreanda Public School teachers Connie Beaumont and Jan Noake.

Connie Beaumont first

taught at Stroud Public School, and moved to Medowie in 1983.

She began teaching at Wirreanda Public School in its founding year.

Her husband, Ray Beaumont, was the Irrawang High School Principal from 1983-1995.

Connie told News Of The Area, “We used to ride around Medowie on our bikes long before we moved here, and wished that we could live here.”

“I’m so glad we made that happen, because we love this town.”

Joan Muir and her late husband Ken moved to Medowie in 1954 and 1947 respectively.

Joan was able to share many fascinating stories of Medowie, including her memories of opening one of the first shops on Medowie Road.

“The relaxing atmosphere and lovely people make Medowie such a lovely community to be a part of.”

“It was so lovely being able to raise my family here,” she told News Of The Area.

Coralie Mather, who moved to Medowie to retire with her husband after buying land in 1973 and building a home, impressed the group with her sharp memory at 94 years of age.

Coralie’s husband, Air Commodore Mick Mather, held a head position at Williamtown RAAF base from 1970-1973.

He was a pilot, and was awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross), AE (Air Efficiency) and the AFC (Air Force Cross) medals.

His DFC Medal was awarded for displaying ‘great daring and courage against the German Luftwaffe in the second World War. They had three children, and their daughter Robyn Mather is a local Veterinarian.

She told News Of The Area, “We were excited to move to Medowie and have space!”

“We were married at 20 and lived on RAAF bases for so many years, we were used to small spaces, so looked forward to retirement and not living in a box.”

Also in attendance was the sweet and softly spoken Geswalda de Gabriele who migrated from England, and moved to Medowie in 1972.

Discussions are now being had about forming an official Medowie Historical Society.

the Lucky Vincent school (believed to be aged between 12 and 14) were on their way to take mock exams at another school when the accident happened.

More than 30 people perished in the accident, made up predominantly of schoolchildren as well as their two teachers and the bus driver.

Only three students survived the accident.

Lauren and her family first became involved with wanting to help African children and their communities after a talk at their church.

They were moved to bring about change, and joined a mission trip to Arusha to visit the families’ sponsor children.

Malteaser the kitten is one of five orphans that came into care with KITTY rescue project at 11pm on Wednesday night.

Amanda from KITTY rescue told News Of The Area, “Their mother is a stray kitty, who has taken to leaving her kittens on the back doorstep of a couple on the Central Coast.”

“She did the same with her previous litter and we are

trying to trap her to avoid the same happening again.”

“We did try and wait to see if their mumma would come back for them but she didn’t,” she said.

Malteaser and her siblings are approximately four weeks old, and will be available for adoption in

Gemma were inspired by their trip to beginning planning for a bigger goal, the establishment of an orphanage in Arusha by the end of 2018.

Currently, all fundraising funds are pooled into an account and sent to Arusha to cover the needs of students.

Their most recent achievement was putting Arusha student Andrew Mwakabana through University.

Andrew is now in his final semester of a social work degree and will head up the orphanage when it opens.

With the news of the distressing accident involving the Lucky Vincent School students, their fundraising plans have been given an extra focus on top of their current efforts.

Lauren and her family are currently raising funds to cover the medical costs of the three surviving students.

Lauren told News Of The Area, “We will also be providing support for the widows of the teachers who were killed in the accident and the families of the children who didn’t survive.”

“We will be supporting these widows to start businesses or learn a trade that will help them to continue supporting their families after the loss of their husbands.”

“The work we are doing is making a massive difference,” she said.

Every dollar counts towards helping these children.

Family Fun at Markets

PORT Stephens Markets run every fourth Saturday of the month, except December and are held in the grounds of the Port Stephens Church of Christ Carpark on Nelson Bay Road in Salt Ash. They are on this Saturday.

The markets commence from 9.00am through till 1.00pm in the afternoon.

Vendors are welcome to have a stall at the market place for a nominal fee

where they can showcase their locally homemade, handmade products for sale.

This market is truly a market with something for everyone in the family.

At this month’s market, live entertainment by ‘A Bit After Ten’ will be provided, as well as a free jumping castle for the children and delicious fresh off the barbecue bacon and egg rolls.

Pluto pups and sausage sandwiches are also available to purchase, as are freshly

baked sweet treats from the home baked cake stall.

Visitors can also place orders for the popular Christmas Puddings cooked locally.

The preloved clothing shop has some excellent bargains and a variety of items for sale, as well as Devonshire morning teas, which are available inside the church.

Market representative Chris Patten told News Of The Area, “Our vendors offer

a wide variety of handmade homemade products such as Honey, Jams, Pickles, Jewellery, Tools, Stationery, Gift Ideas and Key Cutting just to mention a few.”

Friends of ours have asked us to join them on their next camping trip. We’ve never actually been camping before.

How should we prepare?

Ah, camping. The second great Australian dream after home ownership. In fact, given our current housing crisis, it may become the first great Australian dream.

Kids will save their pocket money in order to buy a three by three metre plot in their parents’ backyard and pitch a yurt.

Camping means different things to different people, so I’d be asking a few more questions before you commit.

Do they mean the sort of camping where you stock up at BCF with every contraption known to man and then pitch your tent on a car-space sized area for $35 a night?

Lots of people like camping grounds, but I can’t understand why you’d want to sleep in a synthetic pyramid, wear your thongs into the communal shower so you don’t get ringworm, or cook in the ‘food hygiene rules do not apply’ camp kitchen.

Or are they ‘real’ campers?

This involves living off the land. You basically wear camouflage gear, and your camping equipment looks like something out of MASH. You spear a bush turkey for dinner and then eat it raw because no one has succeeded in the fire-making efforts portrayed

by Bear Grylls (with his soft stubble and impeccable attire, even though he’s just wrested the sound guy who is dressed up as a bear – sorry, I digress).

The toilet is a spade and a eucalyptus leaf.

You sit around on camp chairs and start dozing off until someone says, “Didn’t that brutal killer Malcolm Naden have a cabin near here?”

Do you find either of these options appealing, GH? If, even after my warnings, you throw caution to the wind, take note of all motels within a 50km radius.

You just never know when your group of happy little campers will turn feral.

PORT Stephens women will have the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 scholarship to help them achieve their goals as part of 2018 International Women’s Day celebrations.

Three scholarships worth $1,000 each will be available for women aged 16 and over to encourage, inspire and support them in a broad range of endeavours, including arts and culture, environment, business, community, health and sport.

Port Stephens Councillor Sally Dover brought the proposal to Council, where it was unanimously backed by her fellow councillors.

“With this, we’ll have

the opportunity next year to highlight the work of women, some who have been working tirelessly in the community with passion and dedication,” Cr Dover said.

“A lot of women sow their lives into their families and this might be an opportunity for them to step out and do something important to them.

early 2018, with the awardees to be announced on Thursday 8 March 2018 at the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay’s International Women’s Day lunch.

Darcy Geale, President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, says Rotary is proud to be part of the joint initiative with Council.

“The scholarships will encourage further valuable participation by women in our community,” Mr Geale said.

“One of our key focuses as a Rotary Club is the involvement of youth in the future of our community.

Speaking with two young ladies at the Real Future’s program and hearing their excitement to become part of the program was very encouraging,” he said.

At the end of the scholarship period, the successful candidates will be asked to make a small presentation at the 2019 lunch on how they used the scholarship.

Washington: Government misleading Dungog SHADOW Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington has accused Nationals Leader John Barilaro of misleading Dungog Councillors about the availability of NSW Government funding should a voluntary merger with Port Stephens be agreed.

The Deputy Premier has reportedly told Dungog Councillors that he will ‘advocate’ within Cabinet

for the funding, however, a written answer to Labor’s Shadow Minister for Local Government has advised that the funding is not available to Councils that did not merge as part of the “Fit for the Future” process, and that the allocated funding has now been returned to Treasury.

“The Nationals Leader couldn’t stop the Government from merging his own local

Council. How is he going to get the Premier to agree to give $15 million to Dungog?,” Ms Washington said.

“Even if the NSW Government provides some funding to the Council, the majority of Dungog’s Shire Council’s infrastructure backlog would need to be funded by Port Stephens ratepayers.”

News Of The Area caught up with Medowie resident Mr Brian Knox to discuss his entry in this year’s Medowie car show.

Mr Knox is a seasoned restorer, and two of his current beauties include a 1959 Ford Fairlane in the original red and white and

the 1960 Ford F100 Fairlane Galaxy pick-up truck.

Both have been restored off the chassis.

When asked what he found so satisfying about doing up cars, and Mr Knox said, “I’ve liked wheels all my life.”

“I needed a hobby, something I enjoyed doing.”

Showing his larrikin sense of humour, Mr Knox added, “I could be down at the pub drinking and gambling, but I figure this

He says, “It’s not a cheque-book restoration, it’s all my own work.”

Asked what he likes about restoring cars and

going to car shows, Mr Knox’s daughter, Ms Cheren Hall, piped in saying, “He is addicted to cars.”

“As soon as he fixes up one, he gets another to restore.”

Rectory Markets call for stallholders

THE call has been made for crafty businesses in Port Stephens to put their hand up and join some new market opportunities that support local handmade businesses, and also donate the proceeds to local charities.

The ‘Markets at the Rectory’ and the ‘Farmers Markets’ are brand new

markets.

The Markets at the Rectory will be held every fourth Sunday of the month, and the Farmers Market will be held every second Sunday of the month from June 2017.

These markets are a new collaboration between the organisers of the original Raymond Terrace Community Markets (previously held at Riverside Park) and the

Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

Both markets will be held on the grounds of the ‘Old Rectory’ at 48 Sturgeon Street, Raymond Terrace.

Market organisers are on the lookout for new stall vendors for these regular monthly markets.

For the Farmers Market in particular, organisers are on the lookout for local farmers

and fresh fruit and vegetable providers in the Medowie/ Tilligerry and greater Port Stephens area to connect with and sell their produce.

Market stall organiser Adam Nicholas told News Of The Area, “If the Farmers Markets are successful at the Rectory then we are looking to recreate them at Lakeside Tavern on either the first or third weekend of the month.”

Defence Minister visits Red Zone

Community brought up the topic of Defence funding for the wellbeing program

DEFENCE Minister Marise Payne met with approximately 20 local residents from the ‘red zone’ on Wednesday 17 May. She was also accompanied by the Prime Minister’s perfluoroalkyl [PFAS] taskforce, Senator James McGrath.

The meeting took place in local resident Len O’Connell’s farming shed.

This is the second

time the Minister has met with residents to address the issue, but the first time she has left the RAAF base.

Media were not allowed to attend the meeting and were left waiting for a comment outside the premises.

When the community brought up the topic of Defence funding for the wellbeing program ceasing in June, the Minister said she was not aware this was the case.

“The fact that they’re still trying to claim to do an investigation into the health effects is just ridiculous,” Mr Marshall said.

“There has been worldwide investigations into these chemicals so it’s not a guessing game anymore.”

Residents were left disappointed with the meeting as no new information was brought to light.

“Dates for the Lakeside Tavern Farmers Markets are yet to be released, but keep an eye on both the website and Facebook page for further details.”

All money raised from these fantastic new markets will go to supporting a local charity each year.

This year, the charity recipient will be the Riding for the Disabled Association Raymond Terrace.

Stall holder bookings will close Wednesday May 24, 2017.

Bookings are also being taken for the first Farmers Market at the Rectory on the Sunday June 11, 2017. The stallholder bookings for this market will close Wednesday June 7, 2017.

Gridiron for Breast Cancer

MOTHER’S day for the mothers and wives of Hunter Gridiron League players looked a little different this year.

Breakfast in bed and a day being waited on at home was replaced with hot pink shirts, fast paced football, fundraising and less than perfect weather.

A perfect day was had by all, raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness and watching some quality football by the boys of the Hunter Gridiron League.

The HGL created hot pinks shirts especially for the event, and gave over one o Phot ery Gall line On

Lee Smith from the HGL told News Of The Area, “Corey and I are extremely proud of the football community that is continuing to grow in the Hunter and Port Stephens.”

“The day was great with lots of family coming out on the day and showing their support for a great cause and the Hunter Gridiron League,” he said.

The Bombers were unfortunately defeated on the day by the Marauders, going down 18-6.

The Cannons beat the Miners 22-19 in the second game.

Champ heads for China

YOUNG Futsal Champ Roan Panther is off to Hong Kong and China in August after his selection in the Under 16 Futsal Team was announced this week.

Roan started playing Football at Medowie Football club when he was five.

When he was eleven, he left Medowie to play in

Newcastle.

Roan spent two years playing with Nelson Bay Football Club whilst recovering from a painful condition called Osgood Schlatters, a repetitive use injury that causes a lump beneath the kneecap.

He was then invited to play at Lake Macquarie City CONTINUED Page 8
