“I AM going to miss being there on ANZAC Day,” Corporal Sean Sullivan told News Of The Area.

Sean is a RAAF Avionics Technician based at Williamtown and is currently on deployment.

His wife Ren, and daughters Josie, Annie, Polly and Mindy, will be proudly attending local ANZAC services in his honour.

“We are very proud of the job that he does,” Ren said.

“It is really important to show our support to all people who have served, and to the people who are currently serving.”

Sean is away for around six months each year, which Ren said has a big impact on the family.

“He can’t tell me a lot when he is in a warzone, but we certainly know that they’re going through very trying times at different points,” she said.

“They will continue to negotiate with lenders to borrow the funds required, but at present it is not looking good for the full amount to be financed and this is

“He just wanted me to be able to get my licence and see me succeed.”

“They are such a giving family, and I’d love to see the community dig deep and help them out,” she said.

ANZAC Day Services

ANZAC Day is upon us once again, and the call is out for as many locals as possible to set their alarms and go to their closest, or favourite, Dawn Service to pay respects and remember the fallen service men and women.

April 25 being ANZAC Day, is one of Australia’s most important annual national days.

On this day, the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I, is commemorated.

This military campaign was fought in Gallipoli, Turkey.

The commemoration of ANZAC Day has turned into an important day that acknowledges the sacrifices made for the freedom of Australia in all battles fought as a federated nation.

Medowie RSL subBranch Honorary Secretary, Neil Biggar, told News Of The Area, “As Australians, we owe so much to those people.”

“We welcome all those who wish to acknowledge that debt, and in recent years we have been very pleased to see how many Medowie residents have made the effort to attend.”

“Of course, we would be pleased to see even more people attend our service on Tuesday, 25 April, the

102nd anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli,” he said.

Services around Medowie and the Tilligerry peninsula will take place at dawn, as well as services later in the day.

The Medowie RSL subbranch is holding a Dawn Service preceded by a short march.

The march steps off at 5.45am from the Bull ‘n’ Bush Hotel on Ferodale Road.

The Dawn Service will begin at 6.00am The location is as per previous services, at the Lions Memorial Park at the corner of Medowie and Ferodale Roads.

Following the service, attendees are welcome to stay for a sausage sizzle provided by the Williamtown Rotary Club.

Tilligerry Peninsula will also acknowledge ANZAC Day with a series of events.

At 5:45am, the Dawn Service will begin at the cenotaph at Tilligerry RSL Sports Club, on Lemon Tree Passage Road, Tanilba Bay. At the conclusion of the Dawn Service, breakfast will be served at the Club for a gold coin donation.

From 9:40am, there will be a march from the Avenue of the Allies southern gates in Tanilba Bay, up to the Tilligerry RSL Sports Club.

At 10:00am there will be a ceremony at the Tilligerry RSL Sports Club.

Lest We Forget.

THIS week, this News Of The Area reporter turned left and went West, spending time in Coonamble, New South Wales.

I had the pleasure of meeting with a like-minded reporter, and relatively new editor of the Historical Coonamble Times, Lee O’Connor.

Lee recently purchased the Coonamble Times, which has been operating in Coonamble since 1885, 100 years longer than Myall Coast NOTA. Lee runs the paper by herself, with only two casual staff, who all do a combination of roles.

Lee remarked that only one of them had prior newspaper experience when she took over the paper, and it wasn’t her.

Like our three News Of The Area publications, the Coonamble Times is published weekly on a Wednesday.

NOTA is a Thursday.

However, whilst our population reach may be similar, the geographical reach of the Coonamble Times is much larger, distributing to a massive country area in comparison, around 20,000 square kilometres.

This area contains six communities ranging in size from a couple of dozen people up to around 3700.

Many of their readers are scattered around on farms, some of them over an hour’s drive away from the nearest newsagent.

Lee told News Of The Area, “Believe it or not, we usually have more news and community happenings than will fit in the paper.”

Rescue Kittens looking for love

NEWS Of The Area brings to you this week’s heartstring pullers, two little kitten buddies looking for their forever home.

Ned and Owen, possibly little mates, came into care together, as best mates, from Kempsey Pound.

Whilst they get along wonderfully and are such great friends, the wonderful carers at the KITTY project tell us they couldn’t be more different.

Ned, the tabby and white kitten pictured, is a very playful kitten, full of adventure and spark.

He is cuddly sometimes but mostly loves to play, with people or kittens, really just about anyone.

Owen is a little purrmachine, he is very affectionate, loves people and is a striking young man.

These kitten pals are about nine weeks old, are

Amanda from the KITTY Project told News Of The Area, “Owen and Ned are best friends, they would love to find a home together, though both would be happy

The KITTY Rescue Project rescues whole litters, cares for them within their volunteer foster homes, and ensures that all the necessary veterinary work is completed before adopting them to

Eggs and fun galore

THE Easter Bunny has had a busy week, with several stops in Medowie and the Peninsula to celebrate with children and their families.

The last week of school, daycare and preschool saw children across our area celebrating with Easter hat parades and craft galore.

Every year, students work hard preparing their festive bonnets in anticipation of the big event.

Using colourful cut outs of eggs and bunnies, countless craft items and creativity and glue sticks galore, the students designed their own masterpieces.

Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, joined the children at school to watch and wave as the students walked around the circle with their classmates, parading their designs proudly.

Teachers also got into the spirit of things by wearing their handmade hats.

Medowie Coles and Medowie Woolworths ensured that no one missed out when they each invited a very generous Easter Bunny to visit their stores, providing activities and Easter eggs for everyone.

Coles Medowie representative, Tina Brown, told News Of The Area, “The Easter Bunny visiting Coles was a delight for everyone, young and old.”

“Easter eggs were given out, and we had a colouringin competition and a ‘find the bunny’ comp where children had to find the bunny hidden in the store.”

“It was a wonderful day,” she said.

The Easter long-weekend, for some members of the community, is more than just chocolate treats, a few days off work, and relaxing with friends and family.

In addition to the

festivities, Easter is also the holiest event in the Christian calendar, and is a time when followers of Christ reflect on His death and, importantly for the Christian religion, His subsequent resurrection three days later.

Reverend Ray Manuel, the current Anglican Locum of the Medowie, Williamtown, and Mallabula parish, spoke to News Of The Area about what

Easter means to Christians in the local community.

Scouts complete Leadership course

LAST weekend saw the District Scout Leader for Port Stephens run another highly successful Scout Leadership Course at the 1st Tilligerry Scout Hall.

A total of 11 young people were in attendance.

They represented various Scout Troops within the district.

The Scout Leadership Course is an Award Scheme course designed for Scouts who have completed their Pioneer Badge.

It has content suitable for 12 and 13-year-old Scouts who are keen to develop their leadership skills.

The course has a practical ‘hands-on’ approach and is organised around the Patrol System.

The weekend puts all attending youth in situations they have never had to deal with before as leaders.

They put their skills to the test, and are forced to think outside the box to be able to complete tasks, and work together as a patrol that depends on each other.

One such activity required the young people to work together as a team and put up a four person tent, whilst blindfolded.

The District Scout Leader of Port Stephens, Dennis Conroy, told News Of The

Area, “We had a campfire with singing, skits and a ‘Scouts Own’ run by the youth, which is a fantastic time of reflection.”

“During the day, a challenge required all attendees to eat an orange with a spoon, scooping it out so as not to damage the peel so we could use the orange skin to cook a chocolate cake within it on the hot fire and coals that night.”

“Nothing better than a warm chocolate and orange flavoured cake for supper,” he said.

The course follows the Scouts Australia National Award Scheme Scout Leadership Course requirements.

As such, it is the course that is recognised to gain the Scout Leadership Course badge, a requirement of the Australian Scout Medallion.

q Enthusiastic and hard-working Youth Leaders attended the Scout Leadership Course. clean-up of the high school and to clean the streets so people could access them.

Being on a rotating roster, they were replaced by another group after four or five days.

Other local brigades across the region also sent up volunteer crews to assist in the emergency, such as Soldiers Point, Medowie, Pindimar, Largs, Lochinvar, and Raymond Terrace.

Reported exclusively to News Of The Area, a volunteer said that the town was completely devastated.

“There are people that haven’t eaten in days.”

“As well as cleaning, the Firies are going door to door and checking on everyone.”

“The streets [are] absolutely full of rotting rubbish and mud.”

Many of the volunteers have to take time off work

in order to participate in this vital activity, showing a willingness to make sacrifices to help others.

With the crews now back from their service, they have returned to their families and loved ones who hold together the home while their partners and family members are helping the broader community.

OVER the past few weeks, News Of The Area has been following local firefighters as they volunteer their time in flood-ravaged Lismore and surrounds.

While their skills fighting fires are not being used, ancillary skills they learn as emergency responders have been put to good use.

As previously reported, Mr Harrison Wright a volunteer firefighter from Medowie explained, “Given

THE long-planned and highly anticipated ‘The Block’ event at Irrawang High School was carried out over the holidays, with generous teachers, students and families giving up some of their holiday time to renovate sections of the school.

The renovation show with a cult-like following, The

Block, inspired Irrawang High School students to come up with a wonderful initiative aimed at beautifying their school grounds.

Selected areas at the school were given exciting cosmetic makeovers.

It was an idea of the PBL committee, (Positive Behaviour for Learning) to spruce up these certain areas of the school.

You know, Jasminda once had a fatal attraction to her neighbour. It was based on his assortment of paisley ties hanging from the washing line and the way he could ride up the 75 degree shared driveway on his Malvern Star.

It didn’t take much to get Jasminda’s heart pumping back in the day.

But alas, like your man, he just didn’t notice the lovestruck 12-year-old gazing out her bedroom window.

Or, if he did, he kept his eyes averted. Just as well, in hindsight, given the age gap.

Why don’t you ask your neighbour over for a homecooked meal one night? If he says no and he lives on his own, then you have your answer.

No single male will reject a free meal within 50 metres of their front door.

During the term, plans were developed and designs finalised with final proposals presented to the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) team for sign off and funding, ready for the working bee in the school holidays.

Irrawang High School representative, Lue Fagan, told News Of The Area, “On Tuesday we turned up in old clothes and got stuck into the four main student toilets.”

“It was hard work; priming the areas, anti moulding and scrubbing before the final two coats were done.”

“Covered seating areas and planter boxes were also given some paint to brighten up the playground,” she said.

The areas were divided up into Houses, students planned their days and were assigned volunteers.

Amongst the volunteers were parents, students, school volunteers, principal Paul Baxter, and the two deputy principals David Pearson and Mick O’Brien.

All reports say it was a great turnout from staff and students, and a great community-spirited event with so many people giving up precious time in their holidays.

The volunteer team are looking forward to students returning and being surprised by all the work completed on Wednesday 26 April.

It is gruelling and enduring, and provides a real test for competing teams as they push themselves and their vehicles to the absolute limit.

Teams compete in a series of events and in extreme terrains.

Each team has two people, and their vehicle.

They must complete 12 stages over three days, consisting of one static stage, 10 driving sections and a verification stage where compliance of vehicles and regulations are checked.

The trucks must navigate boulders, rocks, mud, giant tyres, and deep holes and ruts to take out the honours and come home victorious.

From humble beginnings with only 33 competitors, to

the event restricted 75 team limit event that took place this year, the Tuff Truck Challenge has become one of the biggest and most widely attended events on the Australian 4WD event calendar.

Driver Tim Scutt told News Of The Area, ‘We are proud to have come away with such a good result in such a tough competition.”

“We want to thank all the people who helped us make this happen, our friends, family, followers and our great sponsors.”

“The Zuk worked really well over the weekend, with our only issue being a bolt coming loose, with no prep work on the car before the event, it really is a testament to the strength and reliability of the car,” he said.

HOW would you like free childcare from the day your children were born until the day they left the nest to go out into the big wide world all by themselves?

There’s a flock from New Guinea and Indonesia that get away with it every year.

The channel billed cuckoo turns up each year to breed in Port Stephens and other forested areas of the eastern seaboard.

They are very common in Tilligerry.

The species is large, with individuals having a long curved beak and a raucous call.

They make no nest of their own, but lay their eggs in those of crows, currawongs, butcher birds and magpies.

When they hatch, the chicks grow quickly and hog the food the parent birds bring to the nest, thus starving the natural offspring to death.

EASTER, as a rule, is the peak of the crabbing season in Tilligerry and this year is no exception.

Good hauls have been reported from as far afield as the upper reaches of Tilligerry Creek to the weed beds around Mallabula and Tanilba Bay and back up around to Oyster Cove.

Mud crabs in particular are making their presence felt with one crabber

Witches hats are now banned in Port Stephens due to the threat to turtles and traps are limited to two per person and must be no more than 1metre by 1.2 metres in size with no more than four entrances on each trap.

Flathead are also on the bite and bream are to be found around the oyster leases, particularly on the high tide and at night.

Sorry if this unhappy tale is not what you expected.

Down the track a bit we’ll write up one with a happy ending. Promise.

TEAM Redzook, consisting of driver Tim Scutt and navigator Luke Schmahl, this week took out second place in the fiercely contested ‘Tuff Truck Australia’ event.

This national event was held at Milbrodale, NSW over three days in April, and saw 67 teams compete for the highly sought after titles.

Team Redzook, Port Stephens locals, worked hard to place second, and only 24 points behind first place.

They also won two of the stages: Engineering and Jawbreaker.

The Tough Dog Tuff Truck Challenge (TTC) is a 4WD competition event, that’s about as hard as they come for events in CONTINUED Page 8
