FOLLOWING on from the successful Hairspray stage spectacular in 2016, this year another arena show produced by Harvest Rain is returning to Newcastle.

The ever-popular musical Grease has been selected as the showstopper production.

The talent of Medowie’s young dancers is again being recognised with around ten selected to perform.

From the approximately 1000 dancers from around the Hunter and coast regions who auditioned in October

2016, about 600 were selected to be part of the show.

It has been an intensive experience for the young dancers, who attended a boot camp in February 2017 to learn about stage performance.

The rehearsals proper began during the Easter school holidays, with final intense rehearsals scheduled for the two weeks of the July school holidays.

AFTER last year’s stellar turnout at the community engagement meeting organised by the NSW police force, a similar audience was expected at this year’s meeting, held at the Pacific Dunes Greenhouse eatery.

Despite a steady flow of online complaints on social media about what Medowie residents are feeling, and what people think the police need to be doing, there was a dismal turnout at last week’s community meeting.

The new Acting Superintendent Wayne Humphrey addressed the small crowd, and implored them to report everything, and to follow up if needed.

Acting Supt. Humphrey shared graphs of data with the attendees, showing the rate of crime in Medowie versus the rest of Port Stephens.

Medowie currently has on average 7% of the total offences recorded in the Port Stephens local area command.

This equates to an average of 237 offences from 3,436, making Medowie a relatively low crime area.

The Fidget Fad

THE Fidget Spinner, a three pronged spinning gadget centred on a central ball bearing, has become the controversial new fad sweeping the nation and taking over our schools and playgrounds.

Originally created as a gadget to assist children who may be antsy, nervous, hyperactive or anxious, the gadgets have become popular with children across the board, seemingly overnight.

Before spinners came along, many children who would perhaps benefit from them were hesitant of using fidgets because they felt “different” than their friends.

But now, with these fidget spinners gaining so much popularity, the majority of children are using them regardless of whether they

actually need to.

Fidgets spinners are much more than just another fad toy, they can be excellent tools full of therapeutic benefits if children are taught to understand their origin and why they were first introduced into classrooms.

Teacher Simon Tarrant spoke with the News Of The Area about the avalanche of popularity that the Fidget Spinner has seen.

“I have used different fidget devices, both handheld and attached to the legs of chairs, to assist my students that legitimately need them to learn more effectively, but recently so many other kids have suddenly started saying that they ‘need’ these fidget spinners to focus.”

“Problem is, the trend I am seeing is they only focus on the spinner, not their work and they also distract the kids

around them.”

“I’ve discussed it with my classes and have said they can use them but need to be stealthy and get their work done, so basically if I see them, I take them.”

Paediatric Occupational therapist, Claire Woods, is excited about the popularity of the fidget spinners and told News Of The Area, “I’ve been singing the praises of fidget gadgets and the like for so long now, and I can only hope that they serve a positive purpose in the classroom and school, and be used to help children focus in the classroom and not just distract themselves and others.”

“They are such a useful tool for children who need them, and their popularity can help those students to feel more comfortable.”

“I would hope though, that parents discuss the appropriate use of them with their children before allowing them to go to school with them,” she said.

Ringwood History

q Mrs Kathleen Carr and her daughter, Mrs Diane Panowitz meet at the Botanic Gardens to tell their story.

THE secrets beneath the water of Grahamstown Dam continue to be revealed this week.

A conversation with inhabitants of Ringwood, a locality that was subsumed by the artificial town water supply dam when the first water came through in 1960, is featured this week.

The area known broadly as the Grahamstown Moors, located between current day Medowie and Raymond Terrace, commenced dam construction in 1955 and was finished in 1965.

Drought conditions at the time meant that it started to be used in 1960.

It was in the mid to late 1950s that most of the homes that cover the now existing Grahamstown Dam were acquired.

A number of townships were subsumed with the dam, for example Ferodale and Ringwood, and evidence of their former existence

can be told in street names around Medowie.

Kathleen Carr and her daughter, Diane Panowitz (nee Carr), were on hand to tell their history of living in Ringwood before the Dam was built.

In April 1950, the Carr family moved to Ringwood Road, Ringwood.

In Ringwood, they lived in a small dwelling with malthoid walls and compact dirt floors.

By the time their home site was acquired for the dam to be built, the foundation piers for what was going to have been their family home had already been set.

Both Mrs Carr and Mrs Panowitz remember the isolation of the time, telling News Of The Area, “When I (Mrs Carr) broke my ankle, Diane had to go to the neighbour’s house to call the Ferry to tell them to hold it up before if left so that I could catch it to get medical treatment.”

is something unimaginable by today’s standards in a location only 30 kilometres from a major hospital.

In the early 1950s, with poor telephone access, poor roads, and bridges few and far between, people had to be creative with their endeavours to make the best of what they had.

When the family home was acquired in order for the Dam to be built, the Carr family moved into Medowie.

As Mrs Panowitz recalls, “Medowie was so multicultural, there was no discrimination and no racism.”

The airstrip running on the corner of Ringwood Road and parallel to the highway was also a source of remembrance.

Disused after World War II, it was often used as a site for burnouts by young car enthusiasts, or hoons, depending on your perspective.

THE Art Shack in Salt Ash has evolved to where it is today from humble beginnings and a story of healing by its owner Deborah Parker.

Deborah’s art began when she was 27 years old, after surviving a mishap that resulted in a disability.

Deborah was introduced to art through a friend, where she then began studying drawing, pastels, acrylic and oil painting. Art became a best friend for Deborah, and a form of therapy during her healing.

Deborah ran an artrelated business for 15 years in Melbourne.

She was also painting and selling her artwork through retail outlets all over Australia, before eventually relocating to Port Stephens 13 years ago.

Deborah now focuses her artistic passions and enthusiasm on running parttime art classes for children and adults, including those with disabilities.

Deborah has since studied art therapy and special needs teaching, focusing on helping

Deborah told News Of The Area, “Over the years, I have noticed the amazing ability that art has to help build self

confidence, relieve stress and help with mental health.”

Tanilba couple John and Debbie McTackett were among the first to dine in at the eatery and were gushing in their praise.

“We dine out at Thai restaurants on a regular basis and we found the meal just beautiful. It was authentic and we will no longer have to leave the peninsula for our favourite meal,” John said.

For owner Dangkaeu, it is her first venture into the restaurant business although she and her co-workers have gained experience in the industry from as far afield as Sydney, Woy Woy and Nelson Bay. Details about opening hours and menu options can be found on 49845838.

Thai Breaker THE long awaited opening of our Thai restaurant happened quietly and without fanfare recently and within a few hours the staff of three was run off its feet.

It is located in the Kooindah Centre next door to the cake shop and first reports give it the thumbs up.

Medowie Autumn Showcased

REGULAR followers of the Medowie Community Group were in for a visual treat this week when local resident Rod Daniels posted a series of photographs to the Facebook page.

The first set featured the double line of deciduous autumn trees that line a driveway on Ferodale Road.

Naming the photographs ‘Autumn In Medowie’, the stunning landscapes immediately gained the attention of the page followers.

Mr Daniels does not use fancy or expensive camera equipment to take his photos, telling News Of The Area, “All I have is my Samsung phone, which is a hand-me-down from my wife.”

“I do take the photos using a high resolution.”

Mr Daniels who retired at the end of 2016 worked at the Tomago Smelter for more than three decades.

He and his wife moved to Medowie a number of years ago to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Of the photos of the trees on Ferodale Road that have garnered so much attention, Mr Daniels said, “We were driving back from the gym and I spotted the line of trees.”

“I had only joined the Medowie Community Group Facebook page a few days earlier.”

“I was reading the posts and that there weren’t really any photos of Medowie.”

“I thought I would make the posts a bit more colourful” “I was staggered that so many people liked the photos.”

Mr Daniels does have a background in photography, having worked alongside his son for many years assisting with wedding photography in the main.

He says, “I have always been interested in photography, but nothing professional.”

Kennel Responds to Speaker ON 9 February this year, Medowie & Tilligerry News Of The Area published a story entitled “Kennel Death Noise: Pet kennel Forum”, after a Public Forum was conducted at Hunter Pet Motel.

The event was hosted by the PIAA (Pet Industry Association of Australia).

One of the speakers at the Forum was Ms Coralie Davis who spoke about her dog ‘Annie’ and its death at Pelgate Kennels in Cooranbong.

News Of The Area reported what Ms Davis said in her speech to the audience and the publication makes no assumptions, and has no opinion on the matter.

‘Ms Davis spoke of her continuing daily distress after the death of her dog that was mauled to death by another dog in the kennel’s care’.

News Of The Area have spoken to Pelgate Kennels who have strongly refuted Ms Davis’ comments.

Pelgate Kennels are saying there was no evidence Annie was killed by another dog.

“Lake Macquarie City Council conducted their own investigation which concluded that there was in fact insufficient evidence to establish the circumstance of the dog’s death,” Owner of Pelgate Kennels Cynthia Tolman told News Of The Area.

“As Mr and Mrs Davis did not have an autopsy conducted there was no evidence to say that there was a dog attack or other circumstances contributing to her death.”

Ms Tolmon told News Of The Area, “On 12 April RSPCA issued Mrs Helen Arkley a Court Attendence Notice to attend Toronto Court on 9 May for an Act of Animal Cruelty. In the fact sheet the paragraphs (8,9) states Arkley admitted she didn’t attempt to contact the dog’s owners during this time to advise them of Annie’s escalating behaviour, Arkley admitted there were other areas at the facility where she could have

temporarily housed the dogs.”

“Helen Arkley pleaded guilty to these omissions,” said Ms Tolman.

“The Magistrate could not find any act of animal cruelty so he dismissed that charge given (Sect. 10) no conviction. However he found there was an error of Judgement which went terribly wrong so he gave a 2yr good behaviour bond.”

“It has been a very distressful time for all concerned.”

Ms Tolman said, “We at Pelgate Kennels hope this matter can be put to rest and for the Memory of Annie to be remembered as a treasured member of the Davis’s family. ”

Praised in Parliament

PRESIDENT Ian Jones and the Tilligerry Motorama committee were both surprised and elated to learn that they were praised in the NSW Parliament for their excellent work in running yet another successful motor show.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington is recorded in Hansard congratulating the organisers for their efforts over the years in bringing the community together and raising over $100,000 for the children’s section of the John Hunter Hospital.

She also noted the work of our local Lions Club for their catering efforts.

Numbers of exhibitors were slightly down on the 500 total for 2016 but the beautiful sunny autumnal day saw crowd numbers surge to an estimated 4000.

Well, it’s quite simple really. First of all, you need to spend your entire life striving to get the very best marks in school, until you get to Year 10, at which point you should disregard everything that you have been ruthlessly working towards and instead go clubbing in Oxford Street (shave your head and wear a kimono for good measure. Although, that may be harder now that they have that annoying little photo ID requirement).

Then, instead of enrolling in the Bachelor of Communication Studies that you somehow got the marks for, go to Europe and pretend that the world is your croissant.

Forget that these are your formative years in terms of finding your life-long career, and hang out on the ski slopes and drink Schnapps.

Next, come home and start a relationship with the local equivalent of Hando from Romper Stomper.

Don’t be content to hang out with a bad boy, have his child as well.

Then, spend about 10 years in dead-end jobs such as shrink-wrapping pallets of health food products and working for perverts in the hospitality industry.

Finally, land a job finding jobs for people and, after many years in this satisfying career, end up redundant when the government changes guards (oh, the irony).

Go to university, right up to PhD level, and become so qualified that no one will employ you.

Drink copious quantities of ‘woe is me’ vodka and, with so much life experience and many qualifications, get a job as an Agony Aunt.

As that dear little meerkat says, “Simples”.

A presentation dinner later in the year will see representatives of the John Hunter presented with a cheque from the proceeds of the day. It is expected be in excess of $11,000.

Taste Test of High School

TRANSITIONING from primary to high school can be a challenge for many students.

For even the most confident and self-assured young person, the change is significant, and can be daunting.

Irrawang High has this week been running orientation days to introduce primary school students to high school, and give them a taste of life at Irrawang High.

All feeder schools were given times to bring students through the school, where they experienced a taste of all faculties.

Irrawang High School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “We welcomed students from Medowie and Wirreanda Public School this week, which was wonderful.”

“All our partner primary schools from all around the area will be participating in the orientation days.”

“Each school will also take part in the great scarecrowmaking challenge as part of their orientation, and the students are really enjoying this.”

“We are so proud of our school, and what we give back to our students, so it was lovely to see so many primary students wandering around all the faculties, learning and enjoying themselves,” she said.

Irrawang High School also offers many other activities so that primary students can become involved before they start officially in a high school setting in year seven.

Transitioning activities begin in year four, through the Gifted and Talented Students (GATS) Enrichment Program and continues into years five and six.

The GATS program provides activities such as robotics, science lab experiments, activities in our primary industries area (school farm), and helping at school sports carnivals, with all the primary students assisted by our senior students at all times.

Congratulations to Irrawang High School for your inclusive programming, and going above and beyond to ensure future year seven students feel as comfortable as possible in their new school.

SOME 20 years ago the fledgling Lemon Tree Quilters drew together like minded ladies to form a self-help group.

It chose as its home base the old Lemon Tree Passage School.

Since then it has provided friendship and social contact

for a happy band of ladies who are interested in quilting, sewing, crocheting and needlework.

That’s not all: they have been long time supporters of the Cancer Council and regularly create quilts to aid worthy causes.

Long time member Jan Ross told News Of The Area, “Each year we take part in ‘The Biggest Morning Tea’ and this year we raised $250 for the Cancer Council.”

JUST about every car enthusiast in Medowie and the greater area was accounted for on Sunday.

They were at the Medowie Car show, admiring a massive turnout of vintage, classic and

show cars.

News Of The Area spoke to David Feneley, who has been organising this successful event for the past 12 years.

Car owners, enthusiasts and admirers are invited to attend the show free of charge, and just enjoy being surrounded by beautiful cars.

A special element was added to the car show this year, with attendees being asked for donations to assist a local family through a really tough time.

Last week, Corporal Anthony ‘Tubby’ Taylor, lost his life at his home in Medowie whilst working on the family car.

He leaves behind his wife and three sons.

Praise for Dementia Support OPINION Dear News Of The Area, I would like to thank the community for their fantastic show of support during our Hunter Memory Walk & Jog event.

More than 1,400 people walked or ran with almost $40,000 so far been raised by participants, with all funds raised going towards dementia support services in the Hunter region.

In the Myall Lakes, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Upper Hunter state electorates there is estimated to be 6,950

people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to an estimated 8,800 people by 2025 and 15,400 by 2056.

Those who participated in Memory Walk & Jog can be confident that the money they raised will have a direct and positive impact for the members of our community who are living with dementia.

I would like to thank the Hunter community and our many volunteers for their ongoing contribution, as well as our Ambassador Sam Poolman for generously giving up her time to be part of the event. It simply

would not be possible to host Memory Walk & Jog without their support.

“This tragedy has shocked everyone, and the gestures of so many make me proud to be part of this wonderful community.”

not connected to the family to be able to feel like they are helping.”

“Donations from $1 to $100 have been thrown in the collection bucket, and every single cent will be handed over to the RAAF Padre, to pass on to the family,” Chris said.

MID-COAST COUNCIL PROPOSED PERMANENT ROAD CLOSURE, TAREAN RD, KARUAH

Under Section 35 of the Roads Act 1993, notice is given that the Minister for Lands and Forestry will consider the closing of a road in connection with a road closing application proposed by Council. DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL - DA 291/2017 The Council of MidCoast has received a development application from Tattersall Lander Pty Limited seeking consent for an Earth Acoustic Mound on Lot 100 DP 1047534, 182 Myall Way, Tea Gardens (DA 291/2017).

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE last two Friday nights have seen Medowie Rugby in fine form under lights at home.

May 19 saw the club take to the field in true rugby weather, with the pouring rain testing the commitment of the local supporters.

Despite numbers being slightly down, the Medowie faithful still rallied together to support the club.

In the main game, Medowie were unfortunately defeated against Merewether in a close game 7-11.

After Medowie copped a send off before half time, it turned out that Merewether’s 15 players were just too good for Medowie’s remaining 14.

Medowie Rugby representative, Jackie Murphy, told News Of The Area, “Fair to say we lost that one rather than got beaten, we were physically the better side on the park.”

“We are competition contenders but we need to keep developing our game, be adaptable to conditions and make the decisions that are required for premier rugby.”

“As it comes together, we will shift these competitive losses into comprehensive wins,” she said.

Overall, it was one that got away, but a truly solid effort against the competition leaders and one for the Marauders to be proud of.

May 26 saw Medowie take on Maitland at home, unfortunately coming out with a 13-3 loss.
