BROUGHT together to honour the memory of a sweet little girl called Maggie, a room full of ladies participated in a high tea to raise funds and awareness for a very special charity called Heartfelt.

Amanda Gill, with the help of her mother Genelle, sisters Kellie and Belinda, and some special friends, organised the high tea, which sold out again for its second year, at Newcastle’s Novotel hotel.

The high tea honouring Maggie was decorated beautifully with birdcages adorned with flowers, birds and pearls on each table, in a sweet nod to the life of a little girl who was on the minds of every person present.

During the course of the day, through raffles and guess competitions, a total of $3,177 was raised for Heartfelt.

Ten year celebration for Women’s Auxiliary

THE Medowie RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary recently celebrated their tenth anniversary, with a special luncheon at the Medowie Bull n Bush Hotel, and a presentation to their founding members.

Fifty-five guests enjoyed the luncheon, and celebrated this important milestone.

Medowie RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary honorary secretary Mrs Greetje Sargent told News Of The Area, “This was a special day, celebrating our first

important milestone.”

Ten years ago, the Medowie RSL Sub Branch took out a newspaper advertisement, looking for interested ladies to participate in forming a Women’s Auxiliary for Medowie.

On 14 August 2007, seven ladies attended the inaugural meeting of the Medowie RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary.

Those ladies were Mrs Dot Harding, Mrs June Lethorn, Mrs Heather Markey, Mrs Coral Reilly, Mrs Colleen Parish, Mrs Greetje

Sargent, and Mrs Pat Sims.

Of those original seven members, six were able to attend the luncheon and were presented with certificates.

The Auxiliary now consists of 20 members who raise funds and awareness for the RSL and for Defence Care who look after serving existing members and their families.

New members are always welcome to join the women of the the Medowie RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary.

Their meetings are held on the fourth tuesday over every month at 10am at the Bull n Bush hotel.

Marriage Equality at Council meet FROM Page 1

Councillor Giacomo Arnott, Port Stephens Council’s youngest ever councillor to serve, passionately delivered points to councillors, council staff, and the public gallery to support the Notice of Motion he personally put before Port Stephens Council.

“This notice of motion is a really important one for all of us, not just the LGBTIQ

community,” he said.

“We lead our community as the elected representatives, and we need to show that we believe in good strong values, and support everyone within our community equally.”

“Port Stephens is about fairness, inclusivity and equality, and we need to reflect that as their representatives.”

“This is not a political statement, it’s about support for every person living in Port Stephens,” he said.

The councillors were all outspoken in their support for fair and equal treatment for all people in Port Stephens, but when an amendment

to the Notice of Motion was put up, a close vote saw the councillors vote five to four for the amendment to stand.

The successful amendment to the notice of motion will instead simply encourage everyone in Port Stephens to participate in the same sex marriage postal survey.

Despite the watered down positive vote, members of the public in attendance at the council meeting were impressed with the opinions shared by other councillors.

Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan was passionate in throwing his support behind the un-passed motion, stating:

IF you love a good old fashioned garage sale and don’t mind the added bonus of helping raise funds for a community group, then get out your pen and jot this one down in your diary.

Medowie Girl Guides are hosting their Market Day this Sunday, with a variety of new and used items and other speciality stalls.

The market will take place on Sunday 22 October, from 9am until 2pm at the Williamtown Hall.

“We don’t stop people of differing religions or colour getting married, so why sexual preference?”

“We’re not painting the town rainbow, it’s just about doing the right thing and supporting everyone as equals,” he said.

Mayor Ryan Palmer spoke of one of the proudest moments of his life, standing by his sister at her wedding to her wife in England in his support of this notice of motion passed before council.

He also thanked Chris Baguley, who he described

the ‘2017 Garage sale trails reuse revolution’, an initiative designed to reduce landfill.

There will be food and drinks available, with some delicious Devonshire scones making the food list.

The girl guides will also be selling tickets to their major raffle, with ten fantastic prizes donated by local businesses.

The generous prizes include weekends away in Nelson Bay and the Hunter Valley, vehicle servicing, quad biking, sand boarding adventures, a family dolphin cruise, photography prints and homewares.

Tickets are $10, and every cent raised will go to the participants attending the 2018 Sydney Jamboree.

The Jamboree is an as a good family man, for coming along and speaking in support of the motion during public access.

Chris Battle has been a strong and public supporter of the ‘Yes’ campaign, making headlines recently by opening up his home to his neighbours for a barbecue, extending the offer to come and meet his family and expand their knowledge of what this vote means to same sex families.

Councillor Ken Jordan summed up the open discussion amongst the councillors before the notice of motion was passed.

He told all in attendance, “Pope Francis, whilst leading

International week long camp for Guides from all over the World, where the girls will challenge themselves daily, while making new friends and learning life skills.

Elizabeth Keeley from Medowie Guides told News Of The Area, “The girls have worked so hard to ensure this market is a success, and have been working hard selling tickets at the markets and raising funds for the Jamboree.”

“They are so hardworking and passionate about their Guides, and deserve to enjoy their time at Jamboree.”

The day looks set to have something for everyone in the family, so come along for a fun outing, and give the Medowie Girl Guides a helping hand.

World Youth Day festivities recently, was asked for his thoughts on same sex marriage, and his answer was ‘who am I to judge?’ to those in attendance.”

“If the leader of the Catholic Church says it is not for me to judge, then it isn’t for any of us to judge.”

Councillor Arnott told News Of The Area, “I want all people in our community to know that despite this result, Port Stephens is a welcoming, inclusive area for all.”

Dear Mrs GH, When I read your conundrum, I actually thought you were writing about ‘adults only’ colouring-in books, which I must confess I had not heard of before.

I then thought that this was a great concept and decided to quit my multiple day (and night) jobs and focus on the patent.

However, during the research and development stage, I quickly realised that not only are there already ‘adults only’ colouring-in books, there’s also a series called ‘Colour me Drunk: A Drinking and Drawing Activity Book’; Colouring for Grown-Ups (with an odd graphic of a half-coloured-in man and a woman holding her blanket to her chest); ‘The Killer Weed Colouring Book: for Marijuana Lovers’; ‘Profanity: an honest colouring book for people who are mad as hell’ and one called ‘Frig Off, I’m Colouring’ (or words to that effect), for the passiveaggressive colourer.

You would assume that I am just making this stuff up, Mrs GH, but I can assure you I am not.

It seems that the market is pretty well saturated.

That is a real shame, because I have only had about three marketable ideas in my entire lifetime.

Number one was an advertisement for conserves where little jam caricatures danced around to that ‘80s hit ‘Pump up the Jam’, but instead it was ‘Plump up the Jam’, get it? The jam was full of plump fruit.

The other brilliant idea was a deterrent for heroin addicts called . . . oh, forget it. I give up.

Back to the drawing board, Mrs GH. Regarding your colouring-in books, I really don’t understand all that mindfulness stuff. I’m too highly strung, my dear.

TWO Council meetings was all it took for the newly instated Port Stephens mayor to keep one of his main election promises.

Webcasting of all Port Stephens Council meetings will once again be available for members of the public who are unable to attend the meetings held at the Raymond Terrace chambers.

In a sign that new mayor Ryan Palmer is intent on moving Port Stephens into a new era of transparency, he and Cr John Nell moved that council general manager Wayne Wallis “initiate the necessary processes to reinstate and reinstall the webcam system”.

Cr Palmer told all in attendance at last week’s meeting, “For me it is more about the people of Port Stephens being able to freely be involved in the process.”

“I think it’s a great thing for the community but as with anything it will be open to review.”

Dear News Of The Area, The Mambo Wetlands issue is just another example of where low density housing (in this case a dual occupancy) is allowed to encroach into native wildlife habitat.

Port Stephens Council has the responsibility to ensure that this development does not go ahead.

The current owner was well aware that the land purchased was environmentally sensitive.

This should be reserved

sooner rather than later with some councillors voicing their disapproval immediately during the meeting, “I don’t want to take the risk and burden my family by getting sued,” Cr Ken Jordan said.

“There’s going to be groups out there endlessly going over every word we say.”

However, Cr Giacomo Arnott was one councillor who did not harbour such fears.

“My fear is if we stop the webcasting after reintroducing it, people will think we have something to hide,” he said.

“If you’re worried about saying something on camera then perhaps you shouldn’t be saying it at all.”

Cr Jaimie Abbott was also supportive saying, “I think this is a great idea for us as a council to allow the people of Port Stephens to be more engaged in council matters.”

While Cr Steve Tucker tried to put some fears at ease stating, “Qualified interest does allow us to speak freely as long as it’s with good

intent, not malice.”

However Cr Chris Doohan disagreed and was also concerned with the costs associated with webcasting, arguing the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Cr Doohan told News Of The Area, “Parliamentary privilege is only applied to state and federal government, not local.”

“Many discussions or comments made in council could be easily misconstrued, and hence the councillor could be easily sued, so this threat could effectively gag councillors from speaking passionately, so why do that?”

“The cost for the webcasting for the remainder of this term is circa $26,000.

Every single person I have spoken to would prefer the ridiculous amount of money this webcasting costs to be used on road repairs instead,” he said.

Despite the concerns raised, the motion was passed, which means webcasting will soon be made available.

Whether it continues to be available remains to be seen.

The Council should take responsibility to purchase the property and ensure that the owner is compensated for all costs involved.

In turn, the NSW State Government should reimburse Port Stephens Council for their expenses in correcting the State Government’s “mistake”.

More importantly, this should be a wake-up call for residents that we need to overhaul our zoning laws to protect what’s left of our natural environment.

Areas of natural bush should be protected from any development.

Rural holdings should be designated as areas for restoration or reserved for future housing, if already well developed.

Existing developed urban areas should allow for higher density development.

Let’s act while we have a natural environment worth protecting.

National Beauty Pageant Community Space Upgrades Finalist

By Rachael VAUGHAN MEDOWIE teenager Shannon Olive has been named as a National finalist in the coveted Australian Continents Pageant.

With a thought process seemingly wise beyond her years, Shannon told News Of The Area, “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.”

Shannon was selected as a National Finalist for the competition, which recognises that everyone has the right to be their own kind of beautiful.

The pageant has a wide variety of entrants from various cultures, encouraging entrants to seize the opportunity given to them to learn about cultures other than their own, make new friends and try new challenges with girls from all over Australia.

Unlike most other pageants, the Australian Continents Pageant system honors inner beauty, with no no height, weight or age restrictions set for entrance into the Pageant.

The Continents Pageant motto is “Be your own kind of beautiful.”

With the pageant coming up in only a few weeks, Shannon is busy preparing

Shannon will compete in various stages of judging including personal interview and onstage evening gown, fashion wear and swimwear rounds.

There is also the option to compete in Charity rounds and Appearance rounds to claim bonus points.

The top five from each division will then progress forward to an on stage question

portion of competition.

If Shannon is crowned as the division winner, she will then fly to the United States next year to compete in the International Continents Pageant final, as well as take home an amazing array of prizes.

Shannon said her mission through this journey is to “become more confident within myself”.

With the world at her feet, we can expect to see some big things from Shannon.

PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC has welcomed the announcement that Port Stephens Council will receive $75,000 from the NSW Government Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) to build and improve community spaces in Port Stephens. $50,000 will go towards improvements at Longworth Park, Karuah through reinvigorating the park with the installation of new shelters, picnic tables, cultural landscaping and park lighting for security. $25,000 will go towards revitalising Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace through funding the construction of a large, sheltered picnic area including a double barbeque, Colorbond shelter and picnic tables.

Mr MacDonald said that the funding would assist in promoting better community integration through improved communal facilities.

“Funding from the SHCIF not only improves community facilities, but brings tenants, neighbours and the wider community together,” Mr MacDonald said.

“I am pleased that

these community projects in Port Stephens will be assisted through this great government initiative.”

The SCHIF provides one-off grants of up to $50,000 to councils, notfor-profit organisations and private sector organisations to undertake physical improvements in social housing communities or other areas visited by social housing tenants.

Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward congratulated the

successful applicants and thanked them for their commitment to providing improved spaces for vulnerable families to enjoy.

“We are proud to fund projects that will improve local community infrastructure in regions right across New South Wales.”

IT’S that time of year again, when the Tastes at the Bay festival hits town.

The CBD and foreshore will be bustling on 3-5 November, when the festival will take over our taste buds with delectable food and drink, live music to get our toes tapping and events to interest any member of the family.

The Tastes at the Bay festival came from humble beginnings around 2003-4 when Rob Murphy hosted

an evening at his restaurant ‘Rob’s on the Boardwalk’.

The event was a resounding success, and Rob passed the running of the event for future years to the Chamber of Commerce to grow it to what it has become today.

This year’s festival is set to be the biggest and best yet, with a wide variety of old faithful attractions, and new additions to be enjoyed by all.

Peter Clough from the Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “In Nelson Bay, we are truly in

Oyster Back on the Plate

IF you thought that $60 for a dozen oysters was out of the question, think again.

A perfect storm has been gathering in Tasmania whereby the POMS virus (Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome) has seen a ban on the movement of oyster spat to the growing areas of South Australia and NSW. This, in turn, has led to a scarcity and an upward movement in prices.

‘Tides’ restaurant at Tilligerry RSL currently charges $3 each for oysters natural and $3.50 each for oysters kilpatrick or mornay.

Industry pundits predict that at the peak demand time of Christmas, $60 per dozen could very well be the norm in the classier seafood restaurants.

Local farmer Paul North can see the demand escalating even at this early stage: “I can sell anything I produce at the moment but I’m keeping a lot

of stock back to grow out and fatten,” he said.

“After a few testing years, this season has been perfect for growing and with the upward price movements, summer sales should be great,” he added.

Currently, growers receive $10.50 per dozen for bagged plate oysters.

Some years back, a niche market in Pacific oysters developed whereby growers in South Australia were getting $100 each for oysters (and that’s not a misprint).

Top line Asian restaurants wanted large lobsters, prawns and oysters for centerpiece table decorations and would pay this price for oysters.

Paul started to farm outsize Pacific oysters for this market but the demand was weak.

“It’s best to concentrate on one thing at a time,” he said.

“Sydney rock oysters are the most reliable type up here, so I’m sticking with them.”

“Tea Gardens Baptist Church has become an ideal place to run a small youth conference through September/ October and the January school holidays,” Roger Brewer said.

Mr Brewer is the Surch Conference Coordinator for the Bridgewater Church.

Curious locals may have noticed that the carpark and surrounding grounds of the Baptist Church on Myall Street was turned into a wall-to-wall, fence-to-fence campsite over the recent school holidays. ‘’Young people, predominantly from Sydney and other areas of the State gathered together to develop and explore areas of understanding God, Jesus, spirituality, daily faith, personal and leadership development,” Mr Brewar said.

“For some of the kids it is their first opportunity for a holiday at the beach, so it’s wonderful that we have the facilities here to cater to their youth conventions,” Caroline Thornthwaite, Secretary of the Baptist Church told News Of The Area.

“The Surch camps make a huge impression on the young people and teach life skills that some would probably not be exposed to otherwise,” Caroline added.

“We love the reception we get from the locals with the butcher, bakery, local mechanics and definitely ice cream shops all very helpful and patient with the young people we bring into town,” Roger Brewer said.

Beyond the black stump tour

THE bus full of talented Irrawang High CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) students has rolled back into town this week after a whirlwind Queensland trip, called the “Beyond the Black Stump” tour.

These gifted dancers, drummers, singers and all round performers travelled well over 4100 kilometres on their tour through regional New South Wales, to the outback of Queensland and to the coast.

Irrawang CAPA teacher Adele Robinson said, “As they journeyed, they experienced a diverse array of the geographical wonders of Australia.”

“They proved their talents throughout each performance and shone every day as CAPA stars!”

“Special mention must go to our CAPA student

ambassador Rebecca Collins, who was responsible for the daily CAPA videos, pictures and stories, keeping our family, friends and supporters updated on our travels,” she said.

Highlights of the tour saw the Irrawang group visit the Black stump at Blackall, the Woolscour museum, and the tree of knowledge, performing a special concert at the QANTAS Founders Outback Museum and taking a sunset cruise on the Thompson River.

They also visited the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, and performed on the Gold Coast and at Dreamworld.

Most recent CAPA tours to date include 2016 Nine days and eight nights to the Great Barrier Reef, 2015 The Outback Tour to South Australia, 2014 Melbourne/ Ballarat/Canberra, and 2013 Canberra Tour.

tours, the CAPA team has traveled extensively throughout regional and metropolitan areas across state and territory areas since 1994, always with the purpose of providing performances to an array of audiences.

The CAPA team wanted to thank all their family, friends and supporters for their help in making their tour a reality.

Upon their return from Queensland, the Irrawang CAPA faculty, in keeping with tradition, announced the tour for next year.

The 2018 Irrawang High CAPA tour will be called “Melbourne via The Murray”.

We look forward to sharing in the excitement of next year’s tour as the students plan and fundraise throughout the year.

For Art’s Sake

THERE’S a fresh set of artists in Williamtown, who are preparing pieces for a creative new community art piece that speaks about their experiences living in the Red Zone.

Community Helping Community Inc is getting ready for their latest program, with community members coming together once a week at Port Stephens Church of Christ to do paper mache with an important message.

The items currently being created by the group will soon be used for a community

art project, as part of their art program due to start soon.

The art program is an extension of the community wellbeing program, which has been set up to help community members dealing with the uncertainty surrounding the water contamination issue within the areas of Williamtown, Fullerton Cove and Salt Ash. Julie Bailey from Community Helping Community Inc told News Of The Area, “It is wonderful to have the support of the Port Stephens Council in many of our activities.”

“We met with James

Campbell from Council earlier this year to discuss what we were trying to achieve and applied for a Council Grant.”

“Receiving this grant is testament to the Council’s support of the community and we hope that the art program will allow for a step away from the current issues that our community is facing or perhaps even give them an opportunity to have a voice and express how they are feeling through their creative pieces,” she said.

At the end of the program, all the pieces will be brought together for an exhibition.

1,504 stairs for MND. No problem.

OUR Firefighters have again done us proud, with a successful completion of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Stair Climb for all nine members of the RFS Lower Hunter Stair Climb Team, a combined team of Medowie and East Maitland RFS firefighters.

1,504 stairs, 98 levels, wearing 25 kilos of firefighting equipment, and they did it.

Medowie had the youngest climber on the day, with 15-year-old Medowie RFS Member Aaron Lindsay making the climb successfully.

Aaron chose to join cadets originally, before becoming a member of Medowie RFS.

He currently cannot attend incidents until he turns 16, but is an active member along with his sister.

Aaron participates in community engagement, attends the Station on Saturday mornings and is really looking forward to when he can start going to fire calls after he turns 16 in December this year.

Medowie’s own Darryl Luck completed the climb in a personal best of 16:52, carrying with him a photo of Medowie father Brenton Teasdale.

Brenton lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease, one year ago this week.

The connection with Brenton and the Medowie RFS was a short encounter that happened during the April super storm that hit Medowie a couple of years back.

During the blackout the RFS received a call to assist a family, Brenton’s wife Tina needed help with moving Brenton.

Darryl said, “There are so many people in town with stories and battles you just don’t know about.”

“The encounter with Tina and Brenton was a job that has always stayed with me.”

“I’d noticed they had moved and suspected that Brenton had lost his battle with MND, so I made contact with the family through a post on the brigade page as taking Brenton with me to the top was a way of recognising the entire family’s battle and loss with MND,” he said.

MND is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurons) controlling the muscles that

enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow, undergo degeneration and die.

A person’s senses and intellect are not affected, and there is no known treatment or cure.

Each day, in Australia, more than two people die from MND and each day more than two people are diagnosed with MND. All funds raised by our wonderful firies will go towards research into this awful disease.

The RFS Lower Hunter Stair Climb Team raised nearly $9500 with more to bank, so are hoping to go over the $10,000 mark.

Congratulations to our dedicated firies for all they do for others.

Walking for Uncle Lindsay

IF you see a young person out walking with a bright red wig on over the next four weeks, give him a wave and send him a big congratulations to help him on his way.

Ten-year-old Jackson recently lost his uncle, Lindsay, to a heart attack, and was struggling with wanting to do something to help but not knowing how.

Lindsay Smith was only 56 years of age when he passed away suddenly, walking to the shop for his morning paper.

Jackson’s Mum Kylie Brown told News Of The Area, “Over dinner one night last week, Jackson said, I feel really bad that uncle Lindsay

died, I think I want to help other families to not feel like I do.”

“We asked him how he would like to help families and he said he would like to raise money so people can get their heart checked more often.”

“He said he wanted to knock on people’s doors and ask for money; we explained that he can’t really do that, so we contacted The Heart Foundation who suggested doing My Marathon,” she said.

As soon as the idea was suggested to Jackson, he jumped on board and wanted to start straight away.

He began planning on Tuesday last week, and had his page registered and up

From 18 to 28 November, the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre will be proudly exhibiting their Fabulous Fakes.

The artworks are copies or in the style of works that emulate works by the likes of Monet, Botticelli, da Vinci and more.

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Our artists have thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience provided by emulating a Master Artist with all the artworks being reproduced in the exact proportions of the original artworks.”

Nikki Waters told News Of The Area, “I started my career as a teacher of mathematics, and returned to full-time study to obtain a degree in Computing Science in 1983; for 20 years I followed a successful IT career.”

Upon retiring Nikki returned to her first love, taking up painting again in 2003.

In Sept 2008 she was awarded a Diploma in Fine Arts with Distinction from London Art College, UK. Nikki is an enthusiastic

inspiring artist as well as mentor to many members within the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.

Nikki is extremely creative and enjoys finding expression in a wide range of media including watercolour, acrylic, oil, pen and ink.

As a tutor Nikki is engaging and passionate about art.

By Rachael VAUGHAN NOTHING is more frustrating than hearing the complaints of residents saying that Medowie misses out on improvements, funding, amenities and the like, and then arriving for a picnic at one of our local parks to find the seating destroyed yet again and the grounds littered with rubbish.

The gardens and playground adjacent to the Medowie Community Hall are a well used facility, complete with our only public toilet, yet it is an area that is constantly vandalised, littered with rubbish and mistreated.

Several parks in Medowie, and countless roads and grassed areas, have been vandalised in recent months,

infuriating residents who tirelessly work in community groups to keep them nice for our children and other residents.

Medowie has been lucky to receive large pockets of funding in the last 18 months to improve roads, amenities and facilities, yet the cries from social media that Medowie is always left without continue.

There are many areas in Medowie that need attention, as most suburbs in Port Stephens could also argue.

However, it is difficult to continue to put our hand out for money to be spent on our beautiful little town, when it appears a select few members of our community could not care less about caring for amenities and facilities we have been gifted.

The vandals destroying our parks, gardens and other community areas are only ensuring that funds need to

be wasted repairing their damage instead of being spent where it is so desperately needed in other areas of our community.

Geoff Dingle, who serves on a number of committees that meet in the Community Hall, told News Of The Area, “The Medowie Community Centre Recreation park belongs to every Medowie resident, it’s the most popular social meeting location in Medowie and we are outraged it’s been repeatedly damaged.”

“Medowie residents find it difficult to understand why irrational and irresponsible vandals want to trash their own property, repeatedly.”

“Someone has seen this happen, Medowie residents need to report this antisocial behaviour and the culprits to the authorities, we really don’t have to put up with this,” he said.

“Make the choice, what sort of community do you want to live in?”

Hong Kong Gymnastics Connection Tilligerry Social Golf Results

ELEVEN-year-old Hong Kong Level 6 gymnast, Amelie Gibson spent her holidays in the area and trained with local nine-year-old Amya Buyst who is currently a Level 4 gymnast.

Amelie, who is on the Hong Kong gymnastics team, trained with Nelson Bay’s local gymnastic squad and Tanya Lemcke of TPT Centre during the September school holidays.

It is her second visit to train at the Bay, after she had success after a previous training session last year.

On Amelie’s return to school in Hong Kong she will be competing in Manila in the next few weeks.

Tanya Lemcke of TPT Centre told News Of The Area, “It was a great opportunity for Amya to train with such a strong gymnastics athlete.”

She believes that when young people train together in a nurturing environment that they can achieve great outcomes.

q Brothers Will, Roan and Alex will all represent Australia next year in Futsal.

ONE of the great things about sport is how easily it can help families come together.

Another great thing is that you never really know how far your skill and success will take you.

One set of brothers are finding out all about both of these factors.

Roan Panther, Will Philips and Alex Phillips are using their collective love of the game Futsal to not only become a closer family, but each brother will be experiencing a seperate part of the world thanks to their skill in the game.

Futsal, a derivative of the game of soccer, is played on an indoor court with a smaller ball and with only five players per side. It is a very fast and skilful

game.

Players such as Brazil’s Ronaldinho have used Futsal to develop their skills before wreaking havoc on the soccer field.

This gives you an idea on how talented these three brothers are.

Roan, the eldest, has been playing Futsal for three years.

His development has led him to represent Northern NSW at national level but has also represented Australia via the Australian Gol Brasil Academy in China.

Roan now has his sights set on touring Brazil in the Australian 16/17 Boys team in April/May next year.
