Uni Fee Hike Hits Students

LOCAL University students were this week confronted with future fee hikes due to the Federal Government’s plan to cut university funding.

The new measures will see university fees raised by up to 7.5 percent by 2021.

The changes will first appear in 2018, with a fee increase of 1.8 percent.

Students will also have to start paying back their loans sooner, with this threshold being lowered to an annual income of $42,000 compared to the previous sum of over $55,000.

While this means fees won’t become completely deregulated, the government has also announced they will

“These changes aren’t encouraging the youth of today to pursue an education and they certainly aren’t making those who are currently

studying feel any better about their choice.”

A six-year medical degree will remain the most expensive degree to attain, at around $75,000.

Most other degrees commenced in 2018 will cost between $20,000 to $50,00 to acheive.

Elicia Taylor was successful in being awarded this prestigious title, due to her fascinating field of study, Elicia is now in her second year of postgraduate study at the University of Newcastle.

In 2015 she completed her Bachelor of Arts (Honours), also at the University of Newcastle, and received the University Medal.

During her undergraduate studies, Elicia was awarded the Sarah Wheeler Prize for 3000 Level History and the Geoffrey Alan Cranfield Memorial Prize for 4000 Level History.

Elicia’s thesis, which gained the attention of judges during the decision making process to choose the award winners, is entitled ‘Surplus Patriots? How Australian unmarried women reshaped their lives during the First World War’.

Elicia’s project seeks to understand whether the First World War transformed the lives of Australian unmarried women.

“By using marital status as a frame of reference for analysis, I hope to provide more nuanced insights into the range of opportunities and/or limitations influencing women’s lives during the war.”

The project will be divided into overseas and home front experiences, and Women such as Olive King, Vera Deakin and Gladys Marks will

be analysed according to their experiences in activities such as military driving, communication services and humanitarian efforts close to the war front,” she said.

The home front section will examine women from a variety of occupations and professions such as factory work, school teaching and police work, and organisations such as the Australian Women’s Service Corps to gauge how the war affected the single women involved in these

endeavours.

“By employing a variety of methodological approaches and featuring previously overlooked individuals, I hope to make an important contribution to this neglected aspect of Australian war and gender history,” Elicia said.

PLANS are afoot for a conversion of the old Lemon Tree Passage Fire Station into an Arts Centre.

Councillor Steve Tucker said that the location of the building was a prime site for locals and visitors to view and purchase the creative works of local artists, sculptors, jewellery makers and woodworkers.

“Any business owner will tell you that if you have traffic, you have sales,” he said.

“It would be an ideal place to showcase what our town has to offer for the visitor and locals alike.”

“A few Bali banners fluttering in the breeze, tourist brochures on offer and exhibits of the various community groups would be a great drawcard,” he said.

Councillor Tucker said that a makeover of the building was already in the planning stage.

“The Tilligerry Art Group (TAG), our Lions Club and

Port Stephens Council have put together around $12,000 for the job.” “The roller doors will go and be replaced by more ‘people friendly’ ones.

On top of this, some painting and fitting out will need to be done,” Cr Tucker said.

Meanwhile, the self help art group with its home base at the Old School Centre has proved to be an ideal training ground for budding artists.

They meet each Monday between 9am and noon in the top room, which has just been upgraded with a wheelchair access ramp.

The group is only too willing to welcome people who would like to take up painting or drawing.

It will even provide brushes, paints and canvases for those wishing to give it a go and $4 covers a morning’s activities which includes tea and bickies.

There are also numerous art books and videos on hand for inspiration. Just turn up if this interests you.

Bush Church of Bygone Era

By Heather SHARP WITH the appointment of a new Priest-In-Charge at Medowie’s St Francis Anglican Christ Church, News Of The Area has looked into the early history of one of the Parish’s smallest churches, known affectionately as The Bush Church.

Medowie’s early 20th century experiences were characterised by material poverty.

Many people who moved into the area during the years of The Great Depression were victims of this economic and social disaster.

This impacted the resources of those attending Church and, it has been recorded, that when the Christians of the area, who at that stage were multidenominational and meeting near the present day Fire Station, heard that Stockton’s Congregational Church was purchasing new hymn books,

they requested the old ones.

The first Anglican service was held by famous Medowie man and World War I veteran, Mr Rees James who, as a lay reader (that is, not an official Priest, but someone allowed by the Church to preach) gave the first sermon at his property, Gwalia, in 1934 or 1935.

Services continued there until the community hall was opened in 1936, which then became the site for Anglican worship.

In a quirk of a bygone era, as there was not a set time for services, Mrs Ruby James, Rees’ wife, who ran the Medowie public telephone office and mailbag, would notify community members of the service by writing the message on their mail.

The community hall, although unlined and made of corrugated iron, was used and dressed-up by the congregation with carpet and curtains.

It was in 1967, after the Shire Council compulsorily acquired the land where the First Station currently stands, on the corner of Ferodale and Medowie Roads that the congregation moved to its current location, worshipping in the small building still standing today on the current site of Brocklesby Road.

It was not until 1971 that the church received its current name.

As written by local community member, Mrs Erica Mirfin, “The name of St Francis [of Assisi] was chosen as being appropriate because of his love of birds and animals which were numerous in Medowie.”

Here the congregation still meets, with an updated church building opening in 1984.

AWARD winning Medowie bush poet Ms Wendy Seddon is preparing to perform in Merriwa’s Festival Of The Fleeces held over the June long weekend.

Ms Seddon, a published writer, having been included in national anthologies of award winning poetry and The Australian Times Poetry magazine, spoke with News Of The Area.

Amongst other awards, Ms Seddon was Highly Commended in the 2017 Blackened Billy Bush Poetry held during Tamworth’s Country Music Awards, second prize in the Bush Poetry Association’s Competition, first prize for writing for kids in the CJ Dennis Poetry Competition, and second prize at the Henry Lawson Festival for a poem called Henry that addresses the master poet’s depression.

Ms Seddon entered her first poetry competition in 2001 and told News Of The Area “Sometimes I’ve just for to get words out of my head, onto paper.”

“I love words and I love to play with words.”

“They can be really emotive and getting the right word can be a challenge sometimes, but when you get it, it’s a eureka moment.”

Ms Seddon added, “Sometimes I have opinions I want to express and it can be less confronting to write those on paper, rather than speak them.”

At the upcoming Merriwa Festival Of The Fleeces, Ms Seddon will perform, “A poem about memories of my Grandmother.”

Called I Mend And I Make Do, Ms Seddon said, “The poem mimics the rhythm of the sewing machine.”

Ms Seddon says there is a lack of poetry comradery in the area, saying, “The problem I have at the moment is that there is no poetry in the area.”

“It would be good to have people around who enjoy writing too, it doesn’t even have to be poetry.”

Ms Seddon says there are misconceptions about this form of writing.

“I like to put something back, so I act as a mentor for the next generation of doctors,” she said.

“I’m only too happy to pass on my surgical skills and diagnostic techniques to fifth year medical students.”

“They come for a couple of weeks at a time and rotate with other practices to broaden their knowledge,” Dr Pylypyak said.

“It really is quite rewarding.”

Dr Pylypyak is also keen to work with residents with weight problems.

“It’s a matter of education, diet and exercise,” she said.

“We aim for a one kilogram reduction per week.

I was particularly pleased with one client who shed 50kg,” Dr Pylypyak told News Of The Area.

My missus is insulted that I am friends with the stunning girl I took to my Year 6 formal, my first true crush (Year 8) and a university student who I had a brief, but fulfilling relationship with.

Mr BH, Hawks Nest Dear Mr BH, The term ‘friend’ is a very wobbly one when it comes to social media.

On my ‘friends’ list, I have members of our local Council (so I can see what they are really up to), emergency services personnel (you never know when you may need them) and some random lads and lassies from Ireland (I’m a sucker for their warped humour).

But former loves?

You seem rather taken with the ones on your list.

The words “stunning”, “crush” and “fulfilling” give it away.

I can understand, if your wife is folding your thankless offspring’s sports clothes, that she may not want to hear that Simone from Year 8 is about to run an Ultramarathon.

I can sense, if your ‘missus’ as you so affectionately call her, is serving up some cauliflower soup while you watch The Voice, that she may not be too keen to see you gazing nostalgically (or lasciviously) at Ms Newcastle University 2006 (who is now an inspirational speaker/ beauty product flogger).

You’d be better off unplugging yourself from the vacuous world that social media offers and giving your wife a back massage, or a nice cup of tea, or running her a bath.

After all, the posts and photos of former steadies are about as authentic as The Truman Show.

Keep it real, Mr BH, or you may find that the filtered frivolities of your fantasies are all you have left.

PM’s Taskforce Head to come to Williamtown THE head of the Turnbull Government’s PFAS Taskforce has said he will meet with Williamtown residents on Wednesday 17 May. Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson met with Senator James McGrath and he indicated the meeting would take place.

“I am heartened and encouraged by this, and I look forward to introducing the Senator to people in my community who are understandably angry and anxious about the

contamination of their properties and their bodies with these chemicals that have leached from the RAAF base,” Ms Swanson said.

“The Budget included $26.5 million in health and research measures, which was good, but did not address the issues of economic loss, aside from saying it was a ‘liability’ for the government.”

Meryl Swanson said she was hoping Senator McGrath’s visit would expedite a solution for people who want to get out.

“To see Williamtown and PFAS in the budget is a minor victory, but much more should have been done,” Ms Swanson said.

In this budget we have $12.5 million to be spent over four years on a national research program into the health effects of PFAS, and another $14million across four years for health-related initiatives to support the communities in Williamtown and Oakey.

“Tucked away in ‘liabilities’ the budget mentions that there are ‘litigation cases’ and claims for compensation for loss, injury or damage arising

from the Defence use of PFAS chemicals,” Ms Swanson said.

“But these are described as ‘unquantifiable’,” she added.

“So there is no actual money allocated for compensation for economic loss for people in Williamtown and Oakey in this Budget and the government has no idea how much money will be required.”

The NSW Valuer General has indicated that properties have been devalued by at least 15 percent.

“The time for talk is over. I am hoping Senator McGrath’s visit will expedite some action,” Ms Swanson said.

Never Say ‘Yes’ (SCAM )

This one is based around voice recognition and relies on a “Yes” response from the intended victim.

The scammers then use your recorded “yes” to order goods in your name or access your financial records.

The most common call will be delayed and a voice in broken English will ask: “Can you hear me?”

Another caller will know your name and ask: “Is that Mr Smith?”

The natural knee jerk reaction is to answer “Yes.” If you do, you could become a victim.

If you have inadvertently responded in this way and are worried, it may be wise to contact your bank, credit card lender or telco provider.

You could also forewarn your friends.

‘ID care’ is a website which gives advice on the snowballing problem of identity theft.

MEDOWIE Girl Guides hosted their fifth annual high tea today, continuing on the tradition that is becoming a much-discussed event on the Girl Guides Calendar each year.

The theme of this year’s

high tea was ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, and the crowd was at capacity of 150 people.

The Girl Guide leaders and families supported the event by donating food and drink, and gathering prizes.

The girls from the brigade, aged five to 17, serve each year as waitresses to the

guests at the High Tea, and by all reports from the day they did a wonderful job.

Libby Keeley from Medowie Girl Guides told News Of The Area, “The event was yet again a wonderful success.”

MEDOWIE’s newest young entrepreneurs have made quite the impression with their business venture, ‘Renee and Stacey’s Soaps’.

Twins Renee and Stacey Binskin are seventeen years old and currently in Year 12.

The girl’s mother, Ali Binskin, told News Of The Area “We had been thinking and planning together as a family for a long time about the girls starting a market business, as a great employment option for them.”

“Starting this business stemmed from watching my niece, who is a support worker in another area, help an adult with Down Syndrome start her own business in Armidale.”

“I loved the concept and the ability for the girls to start their own business, so Renee and Stacey’s Soaps was born,” she said.

Whilst this small business

is about the girls earning an income, and learning a trade beyond their time at school, it is also about so much more.

The girls are learning how a recipe, and the art of making something from scratch, works and also how recipes can be tweaked to suit their business as it expands and adds extra products.

They are learning money handling skills and about how to communicate within the community.

“With a child with high anxiety, the opportunity for her to grow confidence by starting this business has been amazing,” Ali said.

“As a parent my reasons behind helping the girls start this was for confidence in their ability, learning how to handle money, communication with the general public and lessening the anxiety in their daily life.”

Renee and Stacey have a say in the recipes they create, and also how they will end up

looking for sale.

They are now beginning to take their products to local markets and businesses, and are learning a lot about money and profit and how to run a business.

Renee and Stacey qualified through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for some support worker hours, which enables them to have assistance to make their products, which helps their Mum Ali still be able to work around her own work hours and helping the girls with their business.

“Without the NDIS workers support, and also the support of the local community and the girls customers who continue to buy from them, this wouldn’t be possible.”

“I am so grateful for all the support we have available to make this a successful business for the girls,” Ali said.

YOUNG Citizen Of The Year for Port Stephens, Miss CarissaMae Maher, while an active member of the community, suffers from Crohn’s Disease and Colitis.

Approximately 75,000 Australians have this gastrointestinal disorder which is a lifelong condition that can surface in patients at any stage of their life, from childhood, teenage years, or adulthood.

A form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD, May is Crohn’s Disease and Colitis awareness month.

Staggering Pool Maintenance

By Geoff WALKER DURING winter, the three Port Stephens Council owned aquatic centres close for maintenance on a rotational basis.

This staggering is organised so that dedicated swimmers and those who need year-round daily training always have somewhere to swim.

Tilligerry Aquatic Centre will be first in the cycle and will close on 3 June until 31 July.

Tomaree will be out of action between 17 July and 13 August and Lakeside will have a short break from 3 July to 9 July.

Many patrons buy season tickets as the savings give them access for less than $1 per day.

they are not disadvantaged as they have the option of using their pass at another pool or having it extended for the time their home pool is closed.

Long time patron Bryan English is one regular swimmer at the Tilligerry pool who will miss his regular outings during the two month closure.

The spry 94 year old has been a patron for some 18 years.

He has cut down his daily visits to just three per week.

He does, however, still clock up as many as 30 laps of the 25 metre pool.

“I live by myself and really enjoy the company of likeminded people at the pool,” he said.

“We have a yarn, a laugh or two and a few cups of coffee.”

When asked what strategies she puts in place to lead a full and active life and to achieve her goals, Miss Maher said, “My strategies are predominantly organisation, this is key.”

“Taking time out for myself is important, activities like sport and reading help me focus better.”

Miss Maher also added, “Having a good support network from family and GP,

Dr Burford, is also important to keep me healthy and on track.”

Diagnosed with Crohn’s and Colitis when she was 15, over the past three years, Miss Maher has endured hundreds of doctor’s visits, weekly blood tests in the beginning of her diagnosis, and has been admitted to hospital many times.

Miss Maher is raising money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Australia Charity for research into finding a cure.

She has placed a donation box at Central Health Alliance.

World Champion Skaters give rubbish a kickflip

WORLD Champion Aussie skateboarders Sam Sutton and Poppy Starr Olsen recently performed their tricks at Medowie Skate Park in support of the anti-litter message.

The project was a collaboration between Hunter Councils, Port Stephens Council, Take-3, the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and Medowie Public School.

A mix of litter reduction strategies including improved signage, enforcement and community education are currently being used to target litter prevention at the Medowie Skate Park.

The event was combined with a schools clean-up attended by Medowie Primary School pupils and teachers as well as Take-3 volunteers.

Port Stephens Council’s Waste Compliance and Strategy Coordinator, Nicholas Jones, said that this is a great opportunity to work together with the local community in litter reduction.

“Our data shows the main problem waste at this site is beverage containers like bottles and cans, which is consistent with what we know about litter across NSW.” Hunter Councils Waste

Program Manager, Michael Neville, said, “Hunter Councils is working closely with both councils and the community to prevent litter at recreational parks across the region.

“Our members are really excited by the innovative approach being shown to anti-littering through the participation of local schools, Take-3 and some really great Aussie skaters.”

Take 3’s Co-Founder Amanda Marechal told News Of The Area, “We are so happy to have had high profile skaters Sam Sutton and Poppy Starr as Ambassadors in support of this event.”

A skateboard was presented on the day to Medowie Public School to be used as a reward for an inschool challenge as well as a water bottle and tshirt.

“We have also provided another top of the range skateboard, issued to Hunter Councils, to be used in a “snap to it” campaign, in another initiative to help keep Medowie Skate Park clean,” Amanda Marechal said.

Mission Trip fundraiser

Passionate and compassionate students to embark into rewarding adventure outside their school

A PASSIONATE group of Medowie Christian School students is organising its last fundraising event later this month before it heads off on a very important mission trip to Port Vila, Vanuatu.

The Team Port Vila Vanuatu Mission Trip students have all been working hard to earn the $1600 required to cover the cost of their trip.

The $1600 includes their airfare, transportation, housing, and food.

Once in Port Vila, the students will be teaching English to small groups of children.

They will also be going out into the local villages to help out with building a house on the property where they are staying.

Their last fundraiser to gather last minute funds for

the trip will be in the form of a special High Tea. Running the event will be ten of the students who are going on the mission trip.

The team consists of Ashley Craddock, Jade Keher, Madeline Galloway, Windjana Chester, Tani Broadhead, Amity Carter, Courtney Haddow, Christopher Woodfield, Jackson Kennedy and Finlee Barnes.

There will be a guessing competition on the day, as well as a silent auction with many local businesses and families who have donated prizes.

The team is also running an island-themed photo booth to capture the fun of the day.

The event is scheduled for Sunday 28 May at Pacific Dunes.

Rehearsals begin

STAR Struck 2017 preparation is in full swing, with the first rehearsal for this year’s mega performance taking place this week.

Wirreanda Public School is involved again this year, and was pleased to let News Of The Area know that they have had sixteen dancers and sixteen drama students selected to participate in the 2017 performance event.

Wirreanda school teacher and Star Struck coordinator for the school, Corynne Darcy, told News Of The Area, “We’re so proud

to be invited to be involved again this year.”

“Star Struck has such a wonderful energy, and is such an amazing experience for our young people to participate in.”

“They are making memories with their friends that will last a lifetime,” she said.

The Wirreanda students have had one rehearsal so far, with many more to come before dress rehearsals and performances begin.

Wirreanda is participating in two dances.

The first is a dance piece to the iconic song ‘Love is in the Air’.

Rescue Pet of the week

OUR Rescue pet of the week is another adorable fur baby from the KITTY Rescue Project.

This week’s pet looking for her furever home is Pippa, a tortoiseshell cross tabby.

She is about eight to nine weeks old.

Pippa is so playful and very entertaining.

She is a little snuggle bug who loves people!

The KITTY Rescue Project rescues whole litters, cares for them within their volunteer foster homes, and ensures that all the necessary veterinary work is completed before adopting them to loving families.

Male kittens are $200 and Female kittens are $250.

The adoption fee includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments.

The KITTY Rescue Project is this week also putting out a plea for support from our community to help them to continue the wonderful work that they do.

Two separate public exhibitions (a planning proposal and development application) are on display to develop the: Forster civic precinct site - LOT 11-13 DP 47987 34-36 West Street, Forster.

Planning Proposal - Reference: (SP-PP- 37) To amend Great Lakes Local Environmental Plan 2014, to increase the building height and floor space ratio controls applying to the subject land.

The Department of Planning and Environment has not issued Council with an authorisation to exercise delegation for the planning proposal.

Development Application - DA 521/2017 Applicant: Enyoc Pty Ltd Details: Mixed use development including civic/community, commercial, residential and tourist uses. Facilities include a new library, visitor information centre and community space being developed and delivered on behalf of Council. Given that Council has a commercial interest in the development, Council has engaged an independent consultant to review the development application and prepare a report for the Joint Regional Planning Panel’s consideration. The Hunter and Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Panel will be the consent authority responsible for determining the development application.

The application is also classed as Integrated Development and requires an approval from The NSW Office of Water under the Water Management Act 2000, in respect to a controlled activity.

Exhibition period: Wednesday 17 May to Friday 16 June 2017 Drop-in information sessions: will be held at Council’s Forster Office: Monday 29 May (7am - 9am) - local businesses session Monday 29 May (10am - 12pm) - community session Wednesday 31 May (5pm - 7pm) - community session View documents: Council’s website or at Council’s Forster, Taree or Gloucester offices during normal office hours.
