STUDENTS around Port Stephens celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day last week.

Children’s Day, celebrated for the 29th year in 2017, is a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to celebrate their culture and pass important stories and

learning onto all children, both Indigenous and nonIndigenous.

On this day, all Australians can show their support for and learn about the crucial impact that community, culture and family play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

The theme for Children’s Day 2017 is “Value Our Rights, Respect Our Culture,

Bring Us Home”.

This year, Children’s Day recognises the 20th anniversary of the Bringing Them Home Report, and the many benefits children experience when they are raised with strong connections to family and culture.

MEDOWIE is still mourning the loss of respected and loved community member Gwen Downey, who was killed in a horrific car accident at Mayfield at the end of last month.

Gwen was born in Karuah and spent her childhood there, attending Karuah Public School and Raymond

She moved to Medowie in her adults years, where she and husband Phill raised four children, Ellen, Jennifer, Robert and John.

Gwen was the much-loved grandmother to three boys, whom she adored, and she was delighted to share with locals that a granddaughter would soon be joining the family, due later this month.

Gwen had a strong and dedicated Christian faith, and made it her life’s ambition to help others.

She worked tirelessly within our community in countless roles and volunteer positions, with one single goal: to do all that she could for others around her.

Gwen was passionate about our community, and so many of her efforts for those around her were done quietly, without request for thanks, or the need to be recognised.

Those who spoke to News Of The Area about Gwen, whether it was regarding a friendship in Medowie spanning 30 years, or brief moments in Coles over the fruit and vegetable stands, reported that she was made of pure kindness.

Gwen, you will be missed so very much, but we give thanks that we had you as one of our own.

Ms Michelle Bovill, proud Wiradjuri woman, joined the children at one of Port Stephens registered Children’s Day events, a week of celebrations at Medowie Community Preschool.

Over the week, the children learned about Indigenous instruments and music making, Aboriginal language groups, art through mural painting and the very popular cooking bush tucker.

Ms Bovill told News Of The Area, “I am proud to come from the oldest culture, 60 thousand years and counting, proven through archaeological evidence.”

“I am honoured to share our culture with the community, Indigenous and nonIndigenous, so our children can be raised with the spirit of reconciliation, and with acknowledgement and pride for Australia’s First Nation peoples.”

Nell back for another council stint

q John Nell is standing for East Ward in the 9 September elections.

UNFINISHED business is what’s driving Councillor John Nell to take another shot at Port Stephens Council at the 9 September elections.

Planning regulations, car parking and building height limits in Nelson Bay are top of Cr Nell’s agenda, plus a fear of walking away from something he has, for the most part, enjoyed for nearly 30 years of his life.

“Two years ago I said that I wouldn’t be standing again but circumstances have changed, major issues such as the revitalisation of Nelson Bay need to be finalised,” the 69-year-old retired biologist said.

“Besides, the thought of leaving Council after three decades got quite scary, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.”

First elected to Port Stephens in 1983, Cr Nell said that most of his years on the Council had been enjoyable.

“The last term (five years) has been by far the worse experience but I put that down mainly due to the personalities of two colleagues,” the East Ward Councillor said.

“I am a great believer that personal issues should be put aside when debating at meetings, everyone is entitled to their opinions and these should be respected.

“We are elected to work together, sure we need to have frank discussions but at the end of the day we should be putting the community first, not personalities.”

Cr Nell said it was more important now than ever to move on the Nelson Bay strategic plan and the controversy over building height limits.

“Whether that is 20 metres or 32 metres, we need decisions to ensure investment returns to the Bay and to fill up the shops again.

“Car parking is another hot topic which needs to be sorted out quickly. There are a few options to look at, including the idea of contributions by commercial property owners and using Council dollars.”

Cr Nell said he would like to see the strategic plan resolved within the first 12 months of the new Council and a new Council financial plan achieved within the three-year term.

“It is quite feasible for this Council to sell a building we own in Newcastle and spend the proceeds in Port Stephens.”

Multi-purpose Community Facility

PRELININARY works are underway for the construction of a $3.86 million multi-purpose community facility at Ferodale Road, Medowie.

The community facility will overlook the AFL and cricket grounds and will include meeting spaces, bistro and bar facilities, outdoor seating, a children’s playground and a wheelchair accessible bowling green.

Brock Lamont, Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator, says the new facility has been designed with the Medowie community in mind.

“While the Medowie Sports and Community Club will manage the site, this new facility will give Medowie residents many more opportunities to use and enjoy the current Ferodale Sports Complex site,” Mr Lamont said.

“We hope that more community groups and organisations will be able

to utilise the new rooms and facilities, while there will also be increased opportunities for organised sporting and community events to be held in Medowie,” he said.

“Importantly, this new facility has been designed to function as a community evacuation and recovery centre in the event of an emergency.”

Mr Lamont says people will begin to notice works around the site on Ferodale Road.

“Temporary fencing has been erected, water connection works have started and additional fill materials have been brought in, all in preparation for construction,” he said.

The fill material will require some time to settle and achieve suitable levels of compaction. As this occurs, Council is working through the final design elements to ensure the delivery of a high quality development.

FOR almost four decades he has served his beloved community of Port Stephens, yet on the eve of retirement Mayor Bruce Mackenzie has no plans to slow down.

In fact, in an ominous sign to his successors, the man known simply as ‘Macca’ says he retains a keen interest in civic affairs and won’t be sitting back idly.

“You will still hear me … if this place is being badly led I will be making a noise. I am not going to suddenly lose interest after nearly 40 years of service,” he warned.

“I am going to miss being able to help people and if someone comes to me with a problem they are having with the Council I will do what I can.”

First elected to Port Stephens Council in 1968, the popularly elected mayor says it was with a heavy heart that he decided not to recontest the 9 September Council elections.

Mr Mackenzie took an 8-year hiatus from 2000, but returned with a vengeance to top the poll in 2008 and followed up in 2012 by becoming the Port’s first popular elected mayor.

Once a card carrying

These experiences taught him resilience and a hard work ethic. At 79, he still rises at 5am every morning to feed his stable of horses.

Showcase to the stars

IRRAWANG High School turned on the festival of all festivals recently, with their ‘Showcase 2017’ event impressing the packed crowds each night.

Over 700 performers, backstage crew and staff came together to celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Just Imagine’, and imagine they did.

The students hailed from Irrawang High School and all their feeder primary schools including Medowie Public School, Wirreanda Public School and Irrawang Public School With vibrancy and brilliance, every student from the Lakeside Community of Schools showcased their talents to a packed audience

each night.

Adele Robinson, Head Teacher CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) and Showcase producer, told News Of The Area, “What an amazing two nights that celebrated Public Education at its best.

“On behalf of everyone who worked on Showcase this year, I would like to extend my congratulations to each and every participant and volunteer.

“The community will certainly look forward to next year’s annual extravaganza,” she said.

choirs and soloists who brought a tear to the eye.

The school home economics class worked tirelessly in the kitchen to treat a VIP group to some special treats before the closing night.

Year 12 students, who sadly attended their last Showcase as performers, spoke to the crowd with great emotion about what wonderful benefits participating in Showcase has had for their time at school, and encouraged all students present to be involved.

Many candidates came to speak with locals, address their concerns, and answer questions on their platforms for the election.

Double Celebration

A DOUBLE celebration was held by the local Probus Club last Friday, with the dual 31st anniversary of the establishment of the Club and one of its founding members, Mrs Mim Thomas, turning 104.

A crowd of over 50 members, guests, and visitors joined the special lunch, with Member for Paterson Ms Meryl Swanson the guest speaker.

Centenarian Mrs Thomas, who was born in Liverpool, England emigrated to Australia when she was 38.

The (former) Treasurer for 18 years and still sharpwitted although a reluctant star, Mrs Thomas told News Of The Area, “It’s been a good day and I’m glad I came.”

Mrs Thomas still lives in

her own home and is cared for by her son and a home nursing service three days a week.

Mrs Thomas’ attentive carer, Anne, accompanied her to the Probus event.

Ms Swanson told the group, “It is good to come together in fellowship with others of the same interests.”

She reminded those in attendance that the local

Red Zone to get Documentary

FOUR University of Newcastle Communications students are preparing to film a documentary on the government imposed Red Zone.

Production is set to commence on 17 August,

with filming taking place along Cabbage Tree Road, and parts of Williamtown and Salt Ash. Kristen, the producer and editor Ben, director and assistant cinematographer Paris, sound editor and assistant editor and Eli, cinematographer and

A variety of awards were handed out during the celebratory lunch, including long service awards to those who have been members for ten years and more.

Probus, which is an amalgamation of the words ‘professional and business’ is for the over 50s who are retired or semi-retired.

Affiliated with the Rotary Club, Probus is a friendship Club, and is focused on doing activities for people to get to know each other and to offer socialising opportunities.

On the Move

HAVE you noticed recently how the main arterial road traffic into Tilligerry has increased markedly?

Tilligerry is well and truly on the move.

Tourists are flocking to the peninsula and tradies are pouring in to the numerous construction sites.

To assist with the needs of the future, Port Stephens Council is doing its part.

“The big makeover of the Lemon Tree waterfront has really put us on the map, so we are focusing on developing other waterfront reserves to attract visitors as well,” Councillor Steve Tucker said.

“In tandem with the Tilligerry Lions Club, Council is about to give the Centenary Park project at Tanilba a big boost,” he added.

“The old amenities block will be demolished and a new one rebuilt some distance to the west. The car park will also be moved here because we need to get vehicles away from the children’s play area.

“On top of the old

toilet block’s foundation slab, a picnic shelter shed will be built, complete with barbecue facilities.

“The park behind Mallabula Wharf will also be made more user friendly with the turning circle sealed and with picnic tables put in the reserve in front of the houses.

More facilities such as barbecues, waste bins and an amenities block will be considered down the track as the area becomes more popular,” he said.

“We will also seal the turning circle at Sunset Park, Tanilba.”

“Roads are the number one priority according to ratepayers,” he added.

“The rebuilding of Francis Ave LTP is well advanced and Sherman Ave is next on the list.”

“We have secured $1 million for roadworks at Tanilba and the $500 000 roundabout at Tanilba will become a reality soon.”

The old fire station at Lemon Tree has been given over to the local art group and the Scouts are in negotiation with Port Stephens Council to occupy the redundant Tanilba Fire Station.

Song Sparks Firies

LONG time country and western singer Rob Sanderson from Salt Ash was so moved by the efforts of the Rural Fire Service (RFS) in saving his home that he wrote a song as a tribute to the Tilligerry firefighters.

This he sang at the official opening of the new RFS station at Tanilba Bay to a rousing ovation from those present.

A large contingent from the RFS hierarchy attended the blue ribbon event along with many current and former firefighters.

The deputy commissioner spoke of the dedication of the unpaid volunteers and medals, clasps and certificates were presented.

The four truck station is the largest in the lower Hunter and some $1,000,000 was spent on its construction and associated roadworks.

Councillor Steve Tucker said that Port Stephens Council donated the land and financed the project with the understanding that the NSW State Government would pay the money back over a three year time frame.

“It is only fitting that our volunteers are given the best possible facilities,” he said.

“They put their lives on the line every year for the common good and they deserve the best,” he added.

The official plaque was unveiled by Deputy Commissioner Rogers representing the RFS and The Hon. Taylor Martin MLC representing the NSW State Government.

Marlins host ladies footy

NELSON Bay Marlins offered up their last weekend training session before finals, in the interests of developing the sport in Medowie.

Coach and Player Lauren Cooper told News Of The Area “The weekend was free for us as we finished second on the ladder, so first and second didn’t have a game, with only third through to sixth place playing off over the weekend.”

“So we thought it would be a nice change of scenery for the team to have a training run in Medowie, and help to promote the sport even more.”

Several Medowie ladies and a number of children

joined in the training session, with many more watching on.

“What was great was all the kids that were willing to have a run around with us in the end.” Lauren said.

Of particular mention was a junior female Medowie player, Maddy Jewell, who caught the eye of the Marlins senior women’s team.

Maddy currently plays for the Under 11’s Port Hunter team, and impressed the Marlins girls with her skills, and passion for the sport.

The Marlin girls remarked that they hope to see Maddy and many more like her as future players for Medowie youth girls, Lauren remarked “Myself

SERENA Ireland has been surrounded by horses her entire life.

She inherited the passion from her mother, and the pair have been riding together since she was a baby.

Serena got her first Shetland pony at age three, developing her love of horses before beginning dressage competitions around the age of 10.

Serena trained her first pony ‘He’s A Rockstar’ from the lowest level of dressage, before riding in her first Grand Prix with him when she was just 17.

This is a significant achievement to reach the highest level of dressage at such a young age, especially on a horse you have trained yourself.

Just prior to finishing her High School Certificate, the opportunity to to be a working student at Hof Börnsen, a German equestrian training academy, arose through Serena’s longtime coach and friend Liz Mudd.

She made the brave decision to follow her

dream, and travelled to Germany in December 2015, just six weeks after her final year 12 exam.

Serena told News Of The Area, “I’ve been based at Hof Börnsen since December 2015 and I am now pursuing my dream of becoming a professional rider and an international dressage competitor for Australia.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to compete this season with two incredible horses, Dauphin’s Dream and Franklyn 11, and it has been a very successful season so far, including winning in Vierlanden which was only my third competition with Dauphin’s Dream,” she said.

“My goal is to continue competing this season and consolidating my training in order to be able to qualify for the Future Champions event next year, which is a major international competition for young riders held each year in Germany where I hope to represent Australia.”

Serena is living proof that although it takes a lot of bravery to follow your dreams, the outcome can be wonderful.

and Sophie from my senior team are currently coaching the bay youth girls and the biggest recruitment is the girls bringing their friends along, same as for the seniors” “Hopefully in the near future we will be able to have successful local derbies in both the youth girls and the Seniors women’s teams,” she added.

You can catch the Nelson Bay Marlins women’s team in their semifinal match on Saturday 19 August at Dick Burwell Oval at Nelson Bay at 4:30pm.

The girls have shown their willingness to support Medowie AFL, and it would be great to show them our support if anyone would like to head along to watch.

The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be undertaking 1080 ground baiting for wild dog control within Myall Lakes National Park and Ghin-doo-ee National Parks.

This baiting program is being carried out as part of a broader cooperative control program coordinated by the Hunter Local Land Services to mitigate the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. By Rachael VAUGHAN PORT Hunter AFL turned on the perfect day of finals football, with a huge day last weekend at their Ferodale Oval homeground.

The weather was perfect and the crowd support was strong for all seven Port Hunter teams to finally all be playing at the same venue on the same day.

The first bounce saw the last game of the season for the two U/9’s teams and Auskick.

Port Hunter then had U/11’s Teal take on Wallsend in their final game, unfortunately ending in a loss.

U/11’s Black took on the undefeated Warners Bay, with the boy making the finals next week and finishing third on the ladder.

U/13’s Maitland/Port took on Wallsend with a 60 point win, 8.13.61 to 0.1.1.

They were also successful in taking their place in the finals next week, finishing fourth on the ladder.

Port Hunter finished the day with their U/15’s taking the win over Maitland 14.8.92 to 8.7.55.

They finished fifth on the ladder and will also take their place into the finals next week.
