IN an about-face to how the pre-polling campaign turned out for several candidates, Port Stephens residents participated across the shire in a positive, well-organised local council election day.

In recent weeks, illegal electoral material was distributed by persons unknown to households across Port Stephens.

The two separate flyers were distributed to homes in an attempt to tarnish the reputations of two candidates and their running mates.

The distribution of these flyers was not publicly supported by any candidate, and brought unnecessary

For the 30-year-old father-of-two, it has been a fascinating last 12 months, emerging from relative obscurity to become only the second ever popularly elected mayor of Port Stephens.

Fire season is here FIRE season is on its way, and we have hit the season opening in the worst possible way, with two fires locally already being fought.

One of these fires last week, on the Pacific Highway between Medowie Road and Italia Road, threatened Medowie properties The two fires already logged for this fire season need to be used as a stark reminder of what fire can do, and how quickly it can get out of control, endangering lives and property.

One such property in Medowie that was threatened during last week’s blaze was at Causeway Equestrian at the end of Medowie Road.

The owners have a beautiful property, surrounded by dense bushland, where people from all over Port Stephens, Newcastle and the Hunter region keep their horses, or to

learn how to ride or improve the skills they already have.

This creates a lovely peaceful environment for the horses and riders, but being in the bush brings its fears and downfalls.

Owner Amanda Lynch told News Of The Area, “We were again reminded of this during the week, when the bushfire started near the highway only a few kilometres from us.”

“Having had the October fires last year, we were well rehearsed in what to do.”

The Causeway equestrian team now have a thorough plan to evacuate, with advice from the RFS, to ensure they have the best chance of keeping all animals safe.

“Last October we discovered an efficient way to evacuate 22 horses and how lovely our community is with offers of help coming from everywhere,” Amanda said.

“We initially evacuated to Salt Ash Pony Club grounds

with all of the horses and spent the night camping with them.”

Unfortunately within a few hours of returning home, it was necessary for them to evacuate again, and locals Wayne and Maureen Cone assisted them in moving the horse again.

This time they went to the property of local vet Robyn Mather, who invited them to keep all the horses at her place until it was safe to come home.

Throughout the whole experience they were kept very well informed by the RFS, who came and checked on them a few times.

Last week’s fire came close to being another evacuation, and Amanda hopes that by sharing her story, she may give a personal look at how important it is to be safe this fire season.

“I am happy to say that we have come through two very close bushfires with no loss of

RESIDENTS of Port Stephens can find out how to prepare for the bushfire season as Rural Fire Service brigades throw open their doors to the public this Saturday.

Brigades across New South Wales are taking part in the annual RFS Get Ready Weekend giving local communities the chance to meet the volunteers and find out how to prepare their homes and properties against fire this summer.

Gavin Smith from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade told News Of The Area, “The Open Day is a great chance to meet your local brigade.”

St Christopher’s 60th Birthday

WE remember, we celebrate, we believe.

These words, iced on the cake to celebrate St Christophers Catholic church in Medowie, certainly suited their celebration last weekend.

A happy, high-spirited crowd of around 75 people joined the celebrations, with parishioners from Mallabula and Raymond Terrace joining the Medowie

church celebrations.

The church was fundraised for, and built, largely by community and parish donations.

It opened officially in 1957, making 2017 its 60th anniversary of providing a Catholic place of worship for the people of Medowie.

Gerald Mowbray from the Catholic Schools Office attended the celebrations, and took the time to give the crowd in attendance an informative update on the

new Catholic school, which was well received.

The Catholic secondary school, Catherine McAuley College, is to be built in Medowie and is set to open in 2020.

The St Christopher’s parishioners have been vocal and active supporters of this school for many years.

Congratulations to St Christopher’s on this wonderful milestone.

BUILDERS in Port Stephens are being reminded of their responsibility to protect the environment after a company was fined $18,000 for water pollution offences at Seaside Estate, Fern Bay. The matter was heard

by Newcastle Local Court on Monday 28 August, where the building company was found guilty of multiple pollution offences, fined and ordered to pay Council’s legal costs.

Nicholas Jones, Council’s Acting Coordinator Environmental Health and Compliance, says it’s a good

result for ratepayers.

“Council fined the building company for not having adequate sediment controls in place, which allowed sand and soils to enter the stormwater pits on multiple sites at Seaside Estate, Fern Bay,” Mr Jones said.

“This result sends the message to all builders that they have a responsibility to protect our precious natural environment here in Port Stephens,” he added.

Mr Jones said builders need to make sure they uphold their responsibilities

throughout the construction period.

“This particular builder took the time to install sediment controls, but failed to make sure they were maintained for the life of the construction,” Mr Jones said.

“Council takes environmental breaches like this extremely seriously.

If builders are unsure about their responsibilities under the environmental legislation, they can contact us here at Council,” he added.

VARIETY, the children’s charity, along with Woolworths, encourage Medowie residents to kick a goal for charity this September, by teaming up on their annual NSW wall token fundraising effort.

From 6 September to 3 October, 100 percent of funds raised through purchases of $2 footy shaped wall tokens at Woolworths Medowie will help Variety - the Children’s Charity to support children and families who are facing challenges through illness, disadvantage or living with disability.

Variety helps children and their families with financial support for things like wheelchairs, specialist equipment, therapy, and medical supplies, when they can’t afford it and when government assistance isn’t available.

Funding announcement PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC today visited Port Stephens Council chambers to announce the NSW Government will contribute $226,542 towards the management of public reserves in the Port Stephens region.

The successful projects to be funded in 2017/18 are: Birubi Headland ($12,420 for targeted control of Bitou bush), Booner Street Reserve & Community Centre ($96,459 for replacement of asbestos roofing with a new metal roof), Lemon Tree Passage Environmental Protection Reserve ($20,800 for control of noxious and environmental weeds along 8km of Port Stephens Foreshore), Mallabula Public Recreation ($25,226 for treatment of Ludwigia longifolia on Crown Land), One Mile Beach ($29,960 for dunal and koala habitat restoration) and Port Stephens Women’s Crisis and Support Group - ($22,598 for upgrading the existing facility,

removing overhanging trees and repositioning the fence to ensure a safe and secure facility) The funding is part of the NSW Government’s 2017-18 Public Reserves Management Fund program which provides financial support to maintain the community’s highly-valued public assets.

440 projects will benefit from $15 million in the latest round of the Public Reserves Management Fund.

“State-owned public reserves play an important role in our communities and the NSW Government is committed to ensuring these reserves continue to provide social and economic benefits to the people of NSW,” Mr MacDonald said.

“This funding will directly benefit our community, boost our economy and contribute to the cultural, sporting and recreational life of our region.”

Wayne Wallis, Port Stephens Council General Manager, said Council is delighted to receive the NSW

Government’s support.

“Our community is passionate about our treasured environment and this funding from the NSW State Government will help Council continue our work toward the restoration of our unique habitats, along with supporting our efforts to manage and control invasive species in Port Stephens.

“These grants are a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to preserving our region’s natural assets,” Mr Wallis said.

Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole said $94 million has been invested over the last six years in the upgrade of showgrounds, the repair of buildings, bushfire hazard reduction, weed control and building new infrastructure.

“I want to congratulate all of our hardworking Crown reserve trusts on the great job they do managing and maintaining our public assets right across NSW.”

of aerosol art on buildings, attributing it to encouraging graffiti.

The team started work in 2009 to eradicate a breakout of graffiti that had pervaded the area for some time.

A spokesperson of the PSGAT who asked to remain unnamed for security reasons, told News Of The Area, “Since 2009, our team has been out early in the morning every week to remove tags and other graffiti as soon as they

are applied.”

The PSGAT believes that street aerosol art has to be of a particularly high standard and applied by a very skilled artist to be of universal appeal.

PSGAT believe that more often than not aerosol art can be threatening in subject, and cartoon-like application, that detracts rather than contributes to the ambience of an area.

“It also deteriorates rapidly over time, and requires repainting after a short period, which seldom happens and the community

Community Spring Fair

MEDOWIE Community Spring Fair had the town talking last weekend, with an

event that blew attendees out of the park.

The day was a wonderful success with an unprecedented turn out from families.

There was quite literally something for everyone, with all members of the community catered for throughout the day.

were available, with a large selection of rides from jumping castles and climbing walls to mega slides and laser tag to choose from, just to name a few.

A petting zoo was on hand for anyone needing their cute and cuddly fix, while students from local schools and dance

the school put together stalls of created wares like potted succulents to sell.

Students artwork was on display in an art show and the wonderful ladies at Medowie Lions Club were on hand to encourage people to enter their upcoming art and craft show in October.

Face painting and a fun photo booth were popular with kids and families, as was the lego building competition in the hall.

An online auction run through the week wound up during the fair, with thousands raised from a

wonderful selection of prizes donated by our generous community.

Principal of Medowie Christian School, Mr Simon Herd, told News Of The Area that they were so happy with the success of the event, and the efforts to bring the community together in this wonderful collaborative event.

Koala Project COINCIDING with National Threatened Species Day on 7 September, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC announced this week an additional $30,000 of NSW Government funding to safeguard the Port Stephens resident koala population from bushfire.

Mr MacDonald said that under the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program, this funding will go towards the ‘Port Stephens Koala Project’ in partnership with Port Stephens Council.

“With today being National Threatened Species Day it’s great to able to mark it by securing this funding for our iconic koala,” Mr MacDonald said.

“The NSW Government is also developing a whole-of-government koala strategy on the Chief Scientist and Engineer’s recommendation to help us to increase our knowledge about koalas, including their habitat, population trends and the threats to their survival.”

The Port Stephens Koala Project will develop a fire management plan for koalas and their habitat in the Port Stephens area and to continue to engage the broader Port Stephens community in koala awareness programs.

Wayne Wallis, Port Stephens Council General Manager, said “Koalas are undoubtedly one of Port Stephens’ most iconic and important natural assets and the threats to koala habitat and populations are very real and concerning.

“This funding from the NSW State Government will support Council’s efforts toward engaging the community on awareness of koalas, their habitats and the challenges they face.”

“This grant demonstrates the Government’s support of Council’s commitment to preserving koala habitat and protecting this treasured natural asset,” Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said this project is one of 19 across the state being funded this year to help secure the survival of this iconic species.

“The NSW Government is committed to coordinating efforts to stabilise and ultimately increase the numbers of koalas across NSW. A whole-ofgovernment koala strategy is being developed to achieve this,” Ms Upton said.

More than $1.8 million has already been invested in koala conservation across NSW through the Saving our Species program since 2012–13 with another $800,000 allocated for the 2017–18 budget.

Jacob Ridgeway told News Of The Area, “I am really excited to be performing in front of a classical audience.”

Jacob will be performing simply with his vocals and guitar to tell the story of his family’s experience as a part of The Stolen Generation.

“Bullyman also delivers a response to the way in which Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders have been depicted in the media in Australia since the 1950s.”

The character-driven piece delves into the life of a child stolen from her family, and her awakening to the wrongs in her life and what she had missed.

“I would love to see Bullyman transformed into a

short film and I am currently working on building a monologue which will tell the story in a different medium,” he said.

Ridgeway will perform Bullyman at the Twilight Musical Dialogue on Friday 15 September 2017 at 6pm at Adamstown Uniting Church.

Ride for a cause Adventure ride, a unique fundraising event

TWO remarkable, dedicated and inspirational ladies competed at the PCA Australian Open in Newcastle on Saturday.

Heidi Rhodes of Corlette competed in the Bikini category and Rebecca Humphries of Taree competed in the Ladies Figure category.

Heidi, a busy mum of three, had to rethink her schedule and figure out how and where she could fit her training into family life, so whilst most of us are snuggled up in bed at 4.20am, Heidi is off to the gym for her daily workout.

Heidi said, “I wanted to be the best version of myself and the first change had to come from within, which involved my way of thinking and finding a way to put me first, being a mum, this was a tough change to make, I was determined to show not just myself, but my children that if you really want to achieve something, you find a way.”

When asked about motivation, Heidi told News Of The Area, “My three boys, I want to set a good example for them to have self-discipline and respect, to set goals and to go get them.”

Rebecca Humphries, has regular coaching with personal trainer Joy Flint

either via skype or at PT Fitness.

At the age of 39 (six years ago), Rebecca was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and although not a stranger to competing, decided she would challenge herself to see if she could again make it to stage.

Rebecca told News Of The Area, “As well as wanting to remain in good health, it has been proven that leading an active lifestyle slows the progression of Parkinson’s;

I know myself if I get sick or ease off regular exercise my symptoms get worse.”

Rebecca and Heidi share the following sentiments regarding change, “For those about to embark on a lifestyle change our advice is, don’t let anything hold you back, don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Its starts with just one step in the right direction, moving more and making healthier food choices that can change your life”.

A PORT Stephens motorbike contingent will take part in this year’s Scrapheap Adventure Ride, raising much-needed funds for Down’s syndrome.

A total of 15 bike riders will head to the tiny NSW country town of Tingha, near Inverell, from 29 September to 1 October.

It’s a 2,000km round trip, traversing predominantly back roads and calling into small rural towns along the way.

The adventure ride is a unique fundraising event which involves motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the

country purchasing a bike for no more than $1000 and doing it up for a ride through the Aussie outback all in the name of charity.

For two of the Port riders, the annual event, now in its eighth year, is about camaraderie, fun and raising money for a worthwhile cause.

Rob Mason, from Soldiers Point, will be riding his 1978 Honda XL. “I originally got involved a few years ago through a friend,” Mason said.

“It is a great concept … I have kids in the wider family with Down’s syndrome so it really struck a chord.”

“I have known Perry Gilsenan, a double leg amputee who founded the ride, for many years from back when I was living in Sydney,” O’Toole said.

“The event has grown quite considerably since its inception, increasing from about 20 riders in 2009 to over 200.

“It has also become a major fundraiser for Down’s syndrome sufferers, heading towards the $1 million mark.”

Before Dash was born his egg was becoming buoyant which endangered his life.

Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre’s Marine Biologist Ryan Pereira designed an artificial egg for Dash in which he finished his last two weeks prior to hatching right into Ryan’s hand.

The odds were certainly stacked against this shark whose species is listed as near threatened.

Dash and his siblings at Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre are part of a breeding project.

Lia Pereira of Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre told News Of The Area, “We are very excited that Dash is doing so well and is a finalist in the competition.”

She believes it is very important that conservation happens now to improve the chances of threatened species.

“Around 80 percent of sharks and rays are threatened in some way,” she said.

There are several sharks and rays at the centre which are part of a breeding program including a newly hatched baby Epaulette Shark.

MOST people would think that at 88 years of age it would be time to hang up the golf clubs and turn to a more passive form of recreation.

In the case of Alan Lloyd from Mallabula, he is not only still playing, he’s just taken out the Port Stephens Veterans’ championship.

Whereas most veteran golfers use a cart and struggle to get around nine holes, Alan plays 18 holes and walks all the way. To take out the coveted title, he played in all three qualifying rounds off a handicap of 32 to achieve a net aggregate of 217.

New members are always welcome at Tanilba’s Port Stephens Vets and a joining fee of just $10 will see you playing in their regular Monday competition.

They tee off from 7am.

You must have a registered AGU handicap to enter.

Tanilba Golf Club is easy walking with just one small hill on the course.

It sits on a silica sand bed which keeps it playable in all but the most extreme of wet weather conditions.

By Googling ‘Tanilba Golf Club’ you can ‘walk’ the course via an interactive slide show and also source full details of its operation.
