Silver Medal for Hayley HAYLEY Waterhouse, 21, has won the Silver at the 2018 Skills Show Australia in Sydney, representing the Hunter in the Worldskills Retail Baking - Pastry competition.

Worldskills is a competition allows young people from a large range of trades and skills to compete to win a spot to represent Australia on an international level.

Hayley told News Of The Area, “I began my Worldskills adventure a year ago when I won my regional competition and was chosen to represent the hunter in the 2018 Worldskills National Australia competition.”

“My training began not long after winning regional, and I began by working on general skills that I knew would be used with the competition.”

“For the past 8 months I would work my normal day till 11 am and the go into NSW Tafe Hamilton to train for the competition 4 days a week.”

“While training I had major support of all the teachers who helped me in in the creation of all comp products, and I also had massive support from most of the people I work with, family and

Hayley said, “It was such an honour to be there not only representing my State and my Region, but also myself, my Tafe, my workplace and my trade.”

Hayley competed in the Retail Baking – Pastry category, where 6 entrants battled it out for gold.

The competition was very tough, though Hayley reported that all contestants got along quite well and did all they could to help each

The insurance reforms will also see those injured in a motor vehicle accident regardless of fault eligible

Port families may also still be able to claim the Active Kids sports voucher with each child eligible for a $100 voucher.

Local Port Stephens families have already accessed 4,368 of the $100 Active Kids vouchers to pay for sporting activities to assist their children in enjoying a healthy and active lifestyle.

“When it was announced I got 2nd place, it was the most amazing feeling, because all my hard work had paid off and I couldn’t have been prouder.”

“After finding out I was only a few marks off first, I was a little disappointed, but I was still so close and the girl who won deserved it.”

Unfortunately for Hayley, second place doesn’t get to go to the international comp, but Hayley is proud of her efforts and how far she got.

“This is just the beginning of my adventure,” she said.

Joining African and Australian communities

WOMEN across the globe have joined forces to create some one of a kind pieces for Medowie children.

Medowie Christian School is currently underway with their planning for their school performance, and they’ve enlisted some very special helpers.

The school is set to put

on ‘The Lion King Junior’ this year, and have rallied on community members from not only Medowie, but from a tiny community in Kurungu, Africa.

A parent at both Medowie Christian School and Wirreanda Public School, Sandy White, has gathered the sewing and crafting masterminds of Medowie, and her brother Mick Alley has done the

same in Kurungu in one of his many projects.

Mick Alley first went to Kurungu in 2007 and is raising leaders in the church, doing church planting in surrounding villages, leading a team teaching scripture in schools, overseeing sponsorship of 100 secondary students and 10 college students, runs a bible and ministry training school of 20 full time students, as

The Medowie ladies have already completed two solid days in a ‘sewing bee’ to work on the beautiful handmade costumes, and the women of Kurungu have just completed the stunning accent pieces for some of these costumes.

The women of Kurungu are all mums from the Africa inland church, who meet every Thursday morning for a ‘mamas bible study’ that two of the mamas run.

It is this special group of women who have made stunning beaded neck pieces for Medowie Christian school.

The school paid proper earnings for the mamas to make the beads, which was a significant financial boost

LAST week I once again had the joy and privilege of hosting a ‘Big Cuppa’ morning tea at Fingal Haven Retirement Village to help raise funds for Cancer research and care.

We were also able to celebrate June Bennett’s 100th birthday, and witness her presentation of a cheque [mainly from June’s sale of crochet items over the last months] for $500 to Dean Nunn, Captain of our local Rural Fire Service!

We raised just over $1,700.

Many quite unnecessarily kept thanking me for all I had done.

Thank, all who supported the day, and the businesses who so generously donated raffle prizes.

Raffle prizes were donated by: Avon, Ashlie Hair Salon, Fingal Cellars & Café, Longboat Café, Shoal Bay Pharmacy, OPAAT Health Shop and last but not least Woolworths who provided not only a lovely food hamper, but also a beautiful iced cake for June’s 100th birthday, without charge.

A GOOD news story for some local families who have had a nice little windfall this week.

On Wednesday last week, three local work mates from Raymond Terrace received a great finish to their day when they realised they had just won first prize in the Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot Draw 10230 worth $100,000.

Presented at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace, this week’s winners are; Lachlan Vaughan from Medowie Public School, for being an excellent community role model by supporting a student from another school during Starstruck dance rehearsals.

Harrison Roberts from Seaham Public School, for assisting staff at Seaham Public School with our school basketball teams. Harrison gives up his time to assist with refereeing and organising equipment.

Maddyson Petith from Irrawang High School, for participating in the Krazi Kosci Klimb to raise funds for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Jack Lilley from Karuah Public School, for outstanding bus behaviour.

Jack is now a bus monitor, nominated from the bus driver for his responsible attitude on the bus.

Kaidyn Hunter from Irrawang Public School, for volunteering to play on the opposition’s team during saturday sport, allowing the game to take place.

Lachlan from Raymond Terrace Public School, for displaying true school values of respect and sportsmanship in the wider community while being coached for bowls at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

Justice from Grahamstown Public School, for her community spirit and assistance at Raymond Terrace park run, Joanna Booth from Salt Ash Public School, for her organisation and consideration of other school groups during Starstruck rehearsal.

And last, but certainly not least, Logan Bridge from Hunter River High School, who is to be commended for his thoughtfulness and consideration.

He noticed that there was a visitor to the school who was unsure of where she was going, and selflessly offered his assistance to show her where to go and to also help carry the fundraising materials she was bringing to the school.

This shows initiative, kindness, respect and thoughtfulness.

NEWS Of The Area received a call this week from an elderly Medowie resident who would like to remain anonymous, but wishes to share an important message of gratitude and thanks with the community.

This resident was withdrawing cash from a local ATM last week, so as to be able to pay some bills.

Distracted, she took her receipt from the machine, and left to continue her errands for the day.

The sum of cash was

considerably large, and critical funds for this resident to be able to pay her bills.

A man came to use the machine soon after, spotting the cash left in the tray.

The Medowie woman felt a tap on her shoulder, to find the man asking if she had just used the machine.

She replied that she had, he asked her to confirm the transaction, and returned the money in full to her.

She was quite overcome with emotion, and the importance of

this man’s honesty.

She offered him some money for this efforts, to which he refused repeatedly, telling her to donate some to charity if she desired.

He wished her a good day and left, and the Medowie resident realised she had not asked his name.

She called News Of The Area to share her good news story, in the hope that this kind stranger will read her message and know what a difference he made in the life of this Medowie resident.

THE reality of a new Marine Rescue base station on the waterfront at Lemon Tree Passage (LTP) became one step closer recently with Port Stephens Council listing of the project in its Forward Works Program.

According to Cr Steve Tucker, $100 000 has already been ear- marked for the initial design process. This will involve a think tank involving Council, the local Flotilla executive and Marine Rescue personnel.

Cr Tucker said, “It’s early

days at the moment and we will have to decide whether to place the new structure above the existing amenities block in Henderson Park LTP or to demolish the building and start from scratch.”

“Structural engineers will be given the task of delivering us costings on the design options,” he said.

“The other major decision will be to decide the fate of the current home base perched on top of Whitbread Drive. It could very well be retained as a training centre or sold to offset the cost of

the new waterfront complex,” he said.

Cr Tucker said that he was pushing for the injection of more funds to make both the LTP business district and parklands more visitor friendly.

“Tourists always drive to the end of the road and their initial impression of the area is dictated by what they see.”

“We’ve made a lot of positive improvements and we want to keep the momentum going,” he said.

Someone in my workplace is helping themselves to my packed lunch. There’s always bits missing when I go to eat it. Today my fruit was missing and it looked like there were spoon marks in the quinoa salad.

Ah, you’re one of those people, Miss PL. The type who gets up two hours before you need to be at work so you can do your half hour of mindfulness and cut up fruit for your smoothie, and put the finishing touches on your lunchbox with its carefully segregated sections of fruit and nuts and probiotics and lots of other goodies that look amazing but taste like soggy cardboard and gum leaves. I know that look you get when the office staff decide to pool their money for takeaway KFC. That self-righteous carbohydrate-free stare is not lost on anyone; I can assure you.

Do you really believe that someone is desperate enough to pinch fruit and quinoa? I mean, really, Miss PL, have a think about it. A doughnut? Probably. A Snickers bar? Absolutely. Some leftover Thai food?

Give it to me, baby. But quinoa? I think what is happening is that you are so hungry with your inadequate calorie intake, that you are actually walking to the tearoom in a trance and you are pinching things from your own lunchbox. Things like that can happen when you are malnourished.

It’s okay to have a treat now and then.

You are getting people offside and that isn’t helpful for workplace dynamics. Who would you rather have in your workplace: Gwyneth Paltrow or Celeste Barber? You are veering dangerously close to being on Team Paltrow.

BART joins Rural Fire

Kaleidoscope of Colour

THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is turning the winter blues into a Kaleidoscope of Colour.

Kaleidoscope’ is derived from Ancient Greek, its literal meaning being ‘observer of beautiful forms.’

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Our artists creative minds

have run wild and the result is a veritable kaleidoscope of colour and musical images.”

She believes now is a great time to visit the centre for a bespoke one of a kind winter warmer with plenty of handmade options available.

The centre is also sporting a current display by the Spinners and Weavers in the Annex featuring works produced using the raw fibres of wool, alpaca, silk, and mohair.

The group comb and card the fibres then apply age old techniques like felting and dying to enhance their creations which are knitted, crocheted and made into unique garments.

There’s a huge array of snuggly warm items for the wardrobe as well as beautiful handmade outfits for babies, all lovingly made

by Port Stephens locals.

BART, which stands for Broadcast Alert Respond Turnout, is a new callout system being implemented at Medowie Rural Fire Brigade.

After a successful trial period, brigade members have voted to ‘go live’ with using the BART system at last month’s general meeting.

Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said the BART system is a welcome addition to assist with the management of our emergency response.

“Traditionally, after a Triple-Zero call, the operator will activate the pagers of our local brigade members and those available will turn out to the station,” explains Capt.

Collins.

“The Officer on duty then assembles an appropriate crew – depending on the type of incident – and the first truck then responds with a second (or third) if required, and in essence, this is how it has operated for the last 75 years.

The BART system uses an app on the members smartphone and is activated via the pager alert.

Members can then register their attendance or decline (unavailable).

DARA’s van, and their program mates Orange Sky Laundry, are run solely by volunteers, with the two services working hand in hand to provide support to the community across several areas during the week.

Orange Sky Laundry offers residents a chance to wash their clothes, while DARA’s van provides a home cooked delicious meal.

Emergency Salvage Meeting

By Margie TIERNEY THE Community is being invited to an emergency meeting with Roads and Maritime Services this Thursday 14 June to find out the latest on the container ship spill off Port Stephens two weeks ago.

The meeting has been selected to be held at Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Myall Street, starting at 10am.

A dedicated band of locals continues to scour Jimmy’s Beach and other Port Stephens coastal areas for debris from the 83 containers which were lost overboard from the YM Efficiency.

The ship and the remainder of its damaged containers,, finally docked in Sydney last Wednesday.

The Taiwanese owners of the vessel have apologised for the event, while their insurance company has engaged contractors to deal with the massive salvage operation.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington spoke in Parliament about the devastating impact on our coastal environment ‘’The tonnes of rubbish that now burden our coastline include plastic wrapping, food products, nappies, containers, sanitary products, surgical masks, beauty products, car spare parts and even clocks,” Ms Washington said.

“I understand that helicopters have surveyed the coastline, divers have been in the water and approximately 100 contractors have been on the beaches coordinating the cleanup.”

Ms Washington also made mention of the clean up undertaken by local residents. ““I thank each and every volunteer who gave up their time in brutal weather conditions to do what they could do to help and the many who continue to do so.”

Officially locals have been advised not to help with the clean up.

“No one is absolutely sure of the contents of all 83 containers that washed overboard, or that those contents are safe,” MidCoast Management Officer Andrew Blatch said.

“In addition, Customs and Border Force have to inspect the debris to make sure it is legal and safe to enter the country, just like any other foreign goods that are regularly inspected when entering Australia.”

Gardening help for the Learning Alliance

Bunnings and Irrawang Learning Alliance volunteering for community groups and schools across Raymond Terrace, Medowie and Tilligerry

BUNNINGS Heatherbrae are making their presence known in the community, volunteering in a variety of capacities for community groups and schools across Raymond Terrace, Medowie and Tilligerry.

Last week, Rob and Louise from Bunnings Heatherbrae visited Irrawang High School and assisted with building and planting sensory garden beds for students in the Irrawang Learning Alliance program.

From helping the students build the garden beds, to filling them with soil (with thanks to Hortico) and planting them out, their assistance was invaluable.

Students from the Irrawang Learning Alliance participate in agriculture and gardening programs to help students improve their social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Students also gain invaluable life skills from these programs.

Students learn skills such as how propagate vegetable plants, how to care for the environment, and the importance of vegetables in maintaining a healthy diet.

Louise Bowen from Bunnings told News Of The Area, “Together, the students and our Bunnings team have constructed four garden beds out of fully recycled timber.”

Debris Won’t Cost Residents

Debris from YM Efficiency Containers Lost at Sea Will Not See Port Stephens Ratepayers Out Of Pocket

THE impact of the waste that is washing up on Port Stephens beaches has the capacity to impact the pristine Port Stephens coastal environment and the Port Stephens–Great Lakes Marine Park.

The level of plastic washing up amidst the debris is concerning as turtles, whales and larger marine life tend to mistake plastic as food.

Member of the Legislative Council, and Parliamentary Secretary for Planning, the Central Coast and the Hunter Scot MacDonald told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens ratepayers will not be out of pocket as a result of this incident.”

He believes that the immediate response and efforts of the local community to clean up the mess has been amazing, however it is the responsibility of the emergency clean-up crews that have been contracted locally to do the work.

Reporting debris to RMS will see a coordinated response to the clean-up activities.

Scot MacDonald urged the public to report all sightings of debris via the RMS website which will see the contractors sent to perform the clean-up.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The response from government to the emergency situation was fast, Scot MacDonald was straight on the phone advising that he had spoken with the Minister for the Environment to make sure that the residents of Port Stephens would not need to cover any of the costs of the clean-up.”

Local company Varley has been contracted by the shipping company’s insurer to manage the clean-up.

A spokesperson for Varley said “No expense will be spared to protect the environment and collect the debris.”

There are warnings in place for boaters with one commercial fishing vessel reporting having snagged what they believe was a sunken container.

Port Stephens local Pamela Smith has been organising volunteers to assist in cleaning up, she told News Of The Area, “The cleanup will be ongoing for a long time, there are still 82 containers unaccounted for out there.

“The local people have been absolutely inspirational in how they have come together and willingly worked long hard hours in bleak weather on beaches and the isolated and rocky parts too.

“We are determined to win,” she said.

and bumper bars at Fingal Beach bags, skips and bins are filling along the coast and the people of Port Stephens roll up their sleeves to protect and preserve our patch of paradise.

X-Ray Service Improves Patient Care

THE X-ray services have now been in operation at Tomaree Community Hospital for two weeks and over 91 patients have accessed the service.

Hunter New England Health along with Duty MLC for Port Stephens, Catherine Cusack, Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington, hospital staff, X-ray service providers, ladies auxiliary, Mayor Ryan Palmer and Councillor Jaimie Abbott, members of the community and some of the patients who have accessed the service gathered to celebrate the new service.

Catherine Cusack told News Of The Area, “it is wonderful to celebrate

this new service which has come about through the the efforts of many people over many years, and I must mention past Councillor Sally Dover for her past energy in championing this project.”

She believes that the hospital now has not only an X-ray machine, but new IT and staff to support the 24 hour on call service.

Rod Farlow was the first patient to use the service, he said, “The nurses were magnificent, they always are at Tomaree Community hospital. “it was quite an experience not to have to go away for the X-ray,” he said.

Gabby Holm-pounder said, “I was quite unwell, I was told I needed an X-ray

and didn’t even need to get out of my hospital bed I was wheeled right in.

“Having the X-ray here made a huge difference to me and I can see that with more sporting events coming to the Bay it will get lots of use,” she said.

Greg Waters, has also used the service and his X-Ray’s have been accessed off site by other doctors.

The addition of X-ray services at Tomaree Community Hospital has been strongly welcomed by the community, there are plans to extend the service in the long term to patients of the adjacent medical centre decreasing The need for patients to travel either into Nelson Bay or Newcastle for services.

Scott inspires Salt Ash students

COMMONWEALTH Games dual gold medallist, Natasha Scott, visited the students of Salt Ash Public School recently.

Scott, who came to the nation’s attention after winning two gold medals

at the recent Commonwealth Games held on the Gold Coast, is a Raymond Terrace local who found her future path through an unlikely source.

“I actually started playing lawn bowls because I thought it would be a nice easy bludge for school sport.” Natasha told News

However, Natasha soon realised that she had some real talent when it came to her “school sport bludge”.

Before long, Natasha was at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club day after day trying to refine her newly found talent.

And as we all now know, this talent led her to Commonwealth gold.

The act of trying something new, and trying hard, was a major part of Natasha’s speech to the students of Salt Ash Public School.

Yet, even through the tough times, Natasha had the will to continue to chase her dreams on the lawn bowling green.

After Natasha’s speech, she stayed on at the school

After all, if Natasha hadn’t decided to give lawn bowls a try, despite the initial reasons for doing it, she wouldn’t have her two new sparkling gold medals.
