CWA: More Than Scones

GONE are the days when the Country Women’s Association (CWA) was all about baking scones in country kitchens and awarding prizes for the best fruit cakes and preserves.

The organisation goes back to 1922 when its aim was to improve the conditions of country women and children.

It took off like wildfire and by 1924 there were 120 branches with some 4500 members.

By 1937 it peaked at 345 branches with a membership of 17,000.

The local Tanilba Branch (now Tilligerry) was formed in 1979.

With changing gender roles, the CWA has also adapted to the modern era and they now act as a group giving social contact and organising activities and outings for its members.

Funds raised by their stalls are donated to worthy causes.

Their recent Mothers’ Day stall outside Coles Tanilba Bay was an outstanding success and, you guessed it, their home baked scones, cakes and pies were still the most popular items to attract attention.

MOVE over New York Fashion Week, Medowie put on a fashion show you can’t compare with this week.

Medowie Seniors Club held a very successful event, showcasing all that is fashionable and affordable to the everyday woman.

In all seriousness, the day was a special event for the Medowie Seniors Club, and a wonderful time was had by all in attendance, with larger than expected crowds.

The fashions and accessories on the day were provided by ‘DonnaLou Fashions’ of Toukley.

Four Medowie Seniors Club members did a wonderful job with

volunteering as models for the day: Marj Hollis, Greetje Sargent, Joan Connolly and Janice Goldsmith, who all did a fantastic job.

An impressive crowd of approximately 80 people attended the event.

They came from Medowie, Tilligerry and Raymond Terrace, as well as many visitors from further afar.

Medowie Seniors Club representative Norma Creek told News Of The Area, “It was a wonderful day for our members, and we had a lot of fun and met some new faces too.”

About 10.40pm on Saturday 6 May, Ambulance paramedics were called to a home in John Parade at Lemon Tree Passage.

Two paramedics approached the 37-year-old male patient to medically examine him.

When the man was told that he would be conveyed to hospital for further treatment he became agitated and uncooperative.

As one of the paramedics continued with the examination the man allegedly grabbed a knife and swung it at the paramedic.

Police were contacted and arrived a short time later to discover the patient had locked himself in a garage.

Officers from Port Stephens Local Area Command conversed with the man for a short time and he eventually unlocked the door.

He was again examined by the Ambulance paramedics and conveyed to the Mater Hospital under police guard.

The Ambulance paramedic was not physically harmed during altercation.

It is anticipated that upon his release from hospital the 37-year-old man will be charged with assaulting the ambulance officer.

Port Stephens Heritage grants

PA R L I A M E N TA RY Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, visited Port Stephens this week to announce that Port Stephens Council will receive $24,000 under the NSW Government’s Heritage Grants Program to fund the services of local heritage advisors and community grants.

The announcement marks this year’s Australian Heritage Festival, which runs nationwide until 21 May. Mr MacDonald told News Of The Area, “Looking after our Heritage is everyone’s responsibility, and communities play an important role in maintaining and promoting local heritage.”

“Our local heritage speaks to our history, so

it is important to protect, promote and celebrate it,” “There is so much pressure these days to knock down, but there’s so much history, so whilst we can appreciate new areas, we rely on communities to help us maintain historical areas that we can all access,” he said.

These important grants were awarded across Local Government Heritage Advisors and Local Heritage Places streams.

Local Heritage Places enable councils across the state to fund their own small grants and programs to encourage community action on the frontline of heritage protection.

Heritage Advisors assist in funding the services of local heritage advisors who provide expert knowledge to

help local communities with issues related to heritage planning and conservation.

Wayne Wallis, General Manager of Port Stephens Council, told News Of The Area, “We will use this money primarily to allow the community to apply for small grants to maintain heritage items.”

“Whether it be an item such as a painting, eaves on a heritage building or historic gates, maintenance on historical items is costly, but this funding can help to alleviate this a little.”

“We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating our local heritage at the upcoming heritage festival, where we will be showcasing some wonderful heritage items and focusing on some local architecture,” he said.

Raymond Terrace ‘King Street Heritage Festival’ will take place on 20 May. “I encourage people to use this week to explore their local heritage.”

“There are also a number of National Trust NSW Heritage Festival events across the state running until 21 May for people to attend to celebrate our history,” Minister for Heritage Gabrielle Upton said.

FOLLOWING News Of The Area’s myth busting interview with ex-Medowie resident, Gwen Tinsley Faulkner, we take a closer look at the property areas lost to the dam.

Gwen told News Of The Area, having lived in both areas of Medowie in the 50s and 60s, that there were few comparisons.

She also remembers Medowie being a wonderfully multicultural town.

“The families in our area were a mixture of Australians and New Australians, post war immigrants, who mixed to form a wonderful integrated community.

“There was no discrimination apparent, and most families, especially the New Australians, started with very modest, if any, finances, and worked very hard to become successful businessmen.”

Stand for Justice

A VERY common comment from people is that they can’t find a Justice of the Peace in Port Stephens.

There are nearly 100 JPs in Medowie and if you consider Raymond Terrace, Tilligerry and the Bay, there are over 500 JPs. Justices of the Peace provide an invaluable service to the community on a voluntary basis.

These services include witnessing of Statutory Declarations and Affidavits.

They also include certifying copies of documents and photographic identification.

There is a service at Raymond Terrace Market Place where members of the Raymond Terrace Branch of the Northern NSW Federation of Justices of the Peace (NNSWFJPs) operate a Community Stand.

This is conducted each Tuesday from 9.30am to 1.30pm and is located near the Woolworths Supermarket.

The NNSWFJPs Port Stephens Branch also

holds a Community Stand at Salamander Shopping Centre on the first Saturday of every month (January to November) from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Justices of the Peace do not have to be members of the NNSWFJPs, however for a nominal membership fee, members are kept advised of any legal requirements and changes.

The Federation also provides tutorials to make sure members are fully aware of their responsibilities.

Previously, there were quite a number of people who could witness documents, but in NSW, statutory documents and affidavits can only be witnessed by qualified people.

A NSW statutory declaration must be taken by a person holding a position specified by the relevant Act as one which entitles the holder to take a statutory declaration, the person must be an ‘authorised witness’.

In NSW, an authorised witness must be a justice of the peace, notary public, commissioner of the court

“With my knowledge of the planning process and over 20 years of working with and fighting for the community, I am ready to step up and lead Port Stephens into the future,” she said.

Principal On Study Tour of South Korea

WIRREANDA Public School Principal, Miss Philippa Young, was selected from a competitive application process for the Australian Principals’ Korean Study Tour.

Hosted by the Korean Education Centre, part of the Consulate General, Miss Young joined approximately 20 other school principals across Australia.

her experience and to find out about the South Korean schooling system.

Miss Young said that what she found interesting is that, “Teaching is a highly respected profession and schooling is highly valued by families.”

In recent times, South Korea has shifted its attitude towards schooling, with Miss Young saying, “There has been a significant shift in thinking in their educational philosophy from a sole focus on advanced knowledge to

a new mindset focussing on creativity, well-being and respecting the diversity of students to create ‘Happy, Healthy and fun’ schooling.”

Having the time abroad, and Miss Young has previously taught in Canada, allowed her time to reflect on the good things public schools do in Australia.

Some of these things, as Miss Young told News Of The Area, are, “Inclusive education where we support the academic, emotional, social and cultural growth of

our students.”

Other positives include “a learning environment emphasising a quality learning environment with high engagement and high expectations and strong collaboration of teaching staff”.

When asked about what Australian schools can learn from South Korea, Miss Young said, “Technological enhancements such as Virtual Reality and robotic technologies to help prepare our students for the Artificial

Intelligence age that is coming.”

Besides the professional part of the trip, the participants also had time to relax and explore the food and culture of South Korea.

Miss Young said, “Some of the food was challenging, from eating snails to sea squirts to insect pupae and the popular Kimchi.”

Miss Young also had the opportunity to visit an Australian memorial at Gapyeong which recognises the deaths of UN soldiers in combat from various countries including Australia.

Of this she said, “Visiting just prior to Anzac Day was a cultural and moving highlight.”

A SPECIAL event has been organised in memory of one very special baby.

A high tea will be held on the 8 October at the Novotel hotel in Newcastle in honour of baby Maggie Gill.

This high tea will raise awareness for infant and pregnancy loss and much needed funds for Heartfelt, an organisation of volunteer professional photographers who come to take photos of stillborn or terminally sick children.

This important event has been organised by Amanda Gill, in honour of her angel

Nurses Make It Better INTERNATIONAL Nurses Day, held on 12 May, acknowledges the vital, though often undervalued, work carried out by nurses in many facets of the medical profession.

The day coincides with the birthday anniversary of social reformer Florence Nightingale, the influential founder of modern nursing.

Kristie Spark will celebrate the day with her nursing colleagues.

“The hospital supplies us with lunch and dinner to thank us for our hard work,”

she said.

Kristie has been nursing for 15 years and emphasises the importance of teamwork to the profession.

“The most rewarding part is being able to be part of a team where we all have the same goal,” she said.

“Seeing someone ill and then knowing you had a little something to do with making them better is a fabulous feeling.”

The stereotypes in nursing unfortunately still exist, but the occupation is far more than a supplementary

care role.

Nurses work in consultation with a range of health care professionals, train undergraduate nursing students, and supervise postgraduate nurses.

They also gain accreditation in specialisations and coordinate care as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Kristie told News Of The Area that the biggest misconception is that nurses automatically know what to do in every situation when caring for patients.

Maggie, born a picture of perfection, may not have taken a breath on this earth, but she continues to make a difference in the lives of the people who love her.

International Flights on Horizon

THIS week saw Newcastle Airport come one step closer to direct international flights, with construction commencing on the internal fitout of border processing areas.

The current work will see the installation of necessary security technology, IT technology, passenger screening equipment and furniture for the border agencies.

The project, with an estimated cost of $1.9 million, will be carried out by Hunterbased construction firm, Kingston Building.

The current proposed redevelopment is estimated to create 180 local jobs in the construction process and 375 jobs once complete.

The project is expected to be finished late 2017, with the Hunter region’s economic output expected to rise by up to $147 million through the proposed wider

redevelopment.

A spokesperson for the airport told News Of The Area, “If we don’t have the necessary infrastructure, we won’t ever be able to have international flights.”

“The completion of these fitout works is the next step in bringing international flights to Newcastle,” the spokesperson said.

The new developments are being built in the allocated area that was designed for this purpose in 2015.

This area has remained mostly unused space since then.

Newcastle Airport does not currently have any commitments from any particular airlines to fly to specific locations.

This is just another step in the right direction in bringing international flights to the region.

There is currently no set date as to when international flights may be available from the airport.

I actually prefer to leave the sample photo in the frame, so visitors think I come from an aristocratic pedigree, instead of the sad and sorry oddballs that form my family tree.

Yes, I say, as they admire the photo. That’s my sister Gisele, a model from Berlin, and Claude, her stockbroker husband.

Is it an attractive cat? Some cats are absolutely gorgeous.

From an aesthetic point of view, a Siamese or Burmese feline in a frame may complement your motherin-law’s décor better than a photo of you and Roger frolicking through the vineyards.

The positive in all of this is that you can now stick to a gift-giving theme.

For Mother’s Day, I suggest you take back those chocolates and slippers and instead give her a bag of kitty litter and a three-month supply of all-wormer.

q Newcastle Airport has begun its expansion to cater for international flights.

OPINION Dear News Of The Area, ‘Question time’ finished in NSW Parliament and I spent the next frustrating three and a half hours driving to get to my destination.

But when I got to Wests Diggers Nelson Bay and saw almost 500 people attending a community forum on mental health, I felt enormous relief.

“Lifting the Lid on Mental Illness” was a success.

People had come in droves to Nelson Bay, to learn more about mental illness.

It was the largest community forum I’ve ever seen in Port Stephens.

With a discussion about the latest scientific developments, it captured a mood for hope.

Lifting the Lid on Service Gaps

When it came to questions from the floor, the gap between academia and day-to-day realities was apparent.

This is why these discussions are so important.

The voices from the floor were clear in their frustrations due to longstanding gaps in services, resources and care, gaps acknowledged by the expert panel.

These are the gaps that we are trying to see addressed.

A message I received after the forum summed it up for me: “We can’t make it right without enough people saying it’s got to be better.”

In Port Stephens, we have been saying for a long time, and we will continue to say, “it’s got to be better”.

Because the risks are too high if we don’t.

Each year, more Australians die from suicide than motoring fatalities.

Tragically, Port Stephens has more than its fair share.

We are, however, fortunate to have the hardworking Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN) and Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) who are raising awareness, supporting families and seeking solutions to address the gaps.

Alongside PSSPN and COPSY, we have strong community networks and the support of Lifeline.

Frontline general practitioners are straining under the weight of sheer need, inadequate resources and a lack of referral points.

There are gaps across the spectrum, from low level

prevention strategies to psychiatric support.

The forum was Don MacDonald’s brainchild and it has been his quest for the past 12 months.

I pay tribute to Don for investing his compassionate energy into this project for the benefit of our community.

Through these initiatives, we are raising awareness about mental health and reducing stigma.

We are “Lifting the Lid on Mental Illness”. I thank everyone who participated and supported this impressive initiative and look forward to maintaining the momentum for increased support for people suffering mental illness and their families.

Friday night last saw

a week off due to Country Championships.

The night kicked off with juniors playing before the seniors, something that has not happened for a long time.

The Medowie Seniors played competition heavy weigh-ins, Wanderers Rugby, in a hard fought game which saw the Medowie Marauders victorious with a tight 15-12 final score.

It’s official, Medowie is playing hard, making noise, and the opposition are noticing.

Medowie Masters Netball Motor down to Motorama

THE World Masters Championship had Medowie representation this year with a talented and spirited Medowie Netball club team heading across the ditch to New Zealand to compete.

The Medowie Masters Team that travelled to Auckland New Zealand consisted of 13 players, an umpire and a coach.

They were also joined by some additional family members, Michelle Edney and Luke and Joel Trindorfer, who fulfilled the cheer squad responsibilities at the games.

The World Masters Games commenced with an opening ceremony on April 21, and concluded with a closing ceremony on 30 April.

The Medowie Masters Team departed for 10-12 nights in New Zealand, with some members choosing to have extended holiday time either before or after the games.

The Medowie Masters team first played together in 2009, with many of the original members still playing with the addition of other new members over the years.

Some of the members are Masters Members only and join the Masters Team when they travel and play, others are from the Medowie Netball Teams that play in the local Saturday competition.

The Medowie team played eight games during the week, coming away victorious in three of them.

President of the Medowie

Netball club, Cheryl Smith, told News Of The Area, “Oh what an experience, a funfilled time was had by all, spending time with a great bunch of friends, sightseeing a new country and playing netball in the World Masters Games.”

Medowie Masters Netball is sending two teams to the Netball NSW 2017 Social Masters Competition on October 28-29 2017, which will be hosted by the Illawarra Netball Association.

MOTORING enthusiasts, vintage car buffs, curious onlookers and families looking for a great day out will once again be heading to the Tilligerry RSL on Sunday 21 May. With over 500 cars, utes and trucks on display vying for prizes in 18 different sections, it is arguably the biggest community day of the

year on the peninsula.

On top of this, there are stalls, markets and amusements for the children and all you need is a gold coin donation to get in.

Local car club president Ian Jones said that all proceeds from entry fees and raffles will once again be donated to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

“The Tilligerry Motorama started out as a local event

with around thirty car buffs exhibiting their vehicles at the NRMA centre in Tanilba.”

“Since then it has grown to be one of the most popular venues in the Hunter, if not NSW,” he said.

“Local businesses and motoring suppliers make the day possible and we have been able to donate around $100,000 to our chosen charity over the years.

The judging team will circulate amongst the vehicles and decide which category and what prizes will be awarded to individual entries.

The highlight of the day

will be the presentation of the Don Barrett Trophy for the best exhibit on the day.

It is a perpetual prize awarded in memory of Don Barrett who was a driving force behind the development of the Motorama.

Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, Dr Nicole Mockler who has written extensively on the topic added, “NAPLAN has showed limited significant improvement over the past 10 years.”

The NSW Shadow Education Minister, Mr Jihad Dibs, spoke in Parliament

this week about the testing regime, though the Australian Labor Party has no policy platform to change or abolish NAPLAN. Mr Dibs said, “What’s happening in schools is students are not doing the work they are meant to be doing and instead, they’re planning for the test.”

Mr Dibs went on to infer that NAPLAN does not raise educational standards but rather, “You raise educational standards by giving every possible support that we can to students and to teachers.”

Aerial Spraying of Bitou Bush

MidCoast Council will be carrying out aerial herbicide spraying at various locations along our coastal strip for the control of Bitou Bush. Scheduled works will occur on a number of days during the month of May and June 2017, weather permitting. This activity is undertaken as a part of a broader, collaborative and coordinated program with other public authorities and land management agencies on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Council’s contractor, experienced in aerial spraying, will be following recommendations contained within the “best practice guidelines for aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales”, as published by The Department of Environment and Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust and National Parks and Wildlife Service. Two herbicides will be utilised within different areas determined by site specific requirements.

Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/Kg) will be applied at 20 – 30g/ha or Weedmaster Duo (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha. These herbicides will be applied, as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grassland.

The following areas will be closed to public access for the duration of the spraying or from 7am till 5pm on the specific treatment days: Crowdy Head Reserve; Nine Mile Beach Tuncurry; Pilot Hill (lower area adjacent to southern break wall) Forster; Boomerang Point Headland and Sandbar / Cellito Beach at Pacific Palms Bennett’s Beach, Yacabba Peninsula and Jimmy’s Beach at Hawks Nest. Areas adjacent to Crowdy Head Reserve; Forster Coastal Patrol, Smiths Lake Skate Park, Pacific Palms Sports Complex and Myall Park Hawks Nest will be closed for utilisation as Helipads.

THE past two weeks for Medowie Rugby Club saw the first round of the comp for Medowie Rugby juniors teams, and a fantastic home ground Friday night of Rugby with both the seniors and juniors playing on the same night.

It was a nice coincidence in the scheduling that the senior and juniors teams scored a home game together, something that doesn’t happen often, so it has been a jam packed two weeks of Medowie Rugby.

First up was the first round of the Juniors comp, at home at Medowie.

The under 8s kicked off the home game day with a 3015 win over Maitland.

The under 11s unfortunately lost 29-10 to Nelson Bay, but Medowie Rugby representative Jackie Murphy told News Of The Area that the end score did not reflect the passion of the game.

“The score at the end in this particular game definitely doesn’t reflect the pace and the speed of the game.”

“These kids gave it their all, and Medowie were still trying right until the very end,” she said.
