Mick turns MND diagnosis into a fight for a cure By John WATTS ACCORDING to MND Australia, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is an umbrella term for a group of diseases that affect motor neurons. “Motor neurons are the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that are responsible for voluntary movement,” explains the MND Australia website. “In MND, the nerves weaken and start to die, which means messages can no longer travel between the brain and the muscles, and over time, with lack of use, muscles get weaker and waste away.” There are many theories about what causes MND, but in most

cases the exact cause of MND is unknown, and funds are desperately needed for research to find the causes and cure. Recently Gloucester local Michael (Mick) Lewis received the unwelcome diagnosis that he had developed MND. When Mick’s friends asked what they might do for him, his generous response was to suggest a fundraiser, not for his own benefit, but for MND research. And so, at 11am on 5 September, the Gloucester community will hold a Walk to Defeat MND fundraiser in Gloucester District Park. The event is a 5km walk following the usual parkrun route along the river. “But this event is about more than fundraising,” said

Country halls keep arts and community alive By Sonja DUNCAN SMALL community halls have long been places where country communities meet, celebrate, dance, debate and occasionally

push an upright piano through the door. Barrington Community Hall will return to that tradition when regional musicians Grace Hickey and Hugh Scott Murray

arrive with their well-travelled piano for an intimate concert and community singalong on Sunday, 6 September. The performance also highlights the important

role small venues can play in bringing professional arts and cultural experiences to regional communities. Based at Krambach, Grace and Hugh have spent much of the past decade travelling regional Australia, collecting true stories and turning them into songs. Their travels also inspired the award-winning documentary Up Armidale Road, which follows the pair and their piano into the bushfire-affected community of Nymboida following the Black Summer fires. “There is nothing like music for bringing people together, and the feeling of a country hall reverberating with singing voices still gives us goosebumps,” Grace said. “That community spirit is something worth holding onto, and we feel honoured to play a small part in keeping it alive through music.” The Barrington concert will also give back locally, with $5 from every ticket going towards the care and maintenance of the hall, while the Barrington Public School P&C will raise funds by providing afternoon tea for purchase on the day. Barrington Community Progress Association President Nick Wardle said volunteers built the hall beginning in 1910, on land donated by the McIntyre family. “Generations of local families have gathered at the hall for dances, music, meetings and celebrations,” Nick said. “Having Grace and Hugh perform here builds on that history and keeps the hall alive as a place for music, connection and community.” Arts Gloucester Secretary Jenny Lindsay said regional communities have a real hunger for live performances. “People want quality performances in unique local venues, but just as importantly, they value coming together to share the experience,” she said. Grace and Hugh will perform at Barrington Community Hall on Sunday, 6 September, from 2-4pm, with a mix of their own songs, familiar favourites and audience requests. And, naturally, the travelling piano will be there too. Tickets available for purchase via www.graceandhugh.com/tour

Changing lives through adventure By Kim TEOH “AMAZING,” Beryl Landers exclaimed, when the fundraising tally reached $1,077.95 at a charity high tea and auction held at Gloucester Seventh-day Adventist Church on 23 August. The $15 high tea attracted about 20 ladies, who were each asked to bring two items for the auction. Proceeds from the event went to Delhuntie Park Youth Care & Lifestyle Centre Inc. at Bulahdelah. The ladies watched with amusement as auctioneer Francis Wood ingeniously entertained the gathering with amusing descriptions of each item, encouraging guests to bid. Beryl concluded each sale with her hammer. Helen Scale, who founded

Delhuntie Park, spoke briefly about how the organisation began and its aim of using adventure initiatives to help heal broken lives. Her daughter-inlaw, Marg, explained that Delhuntie works with young people experiencing depression, anxiety, low selfworth, anger or boredom. “Our approach uses perceived-risk activities in a safe and supportive environment,” she said. Delhuntie runs a fiveday Wilderness Adventure Survival Program, designed as an adventure-therapy and personal-development experience. Participants are encouraged to confront challenges while developing resilience, trust, forgiveness, teamwork and self-discovery. On Thursday, 10

September, Delhuntie will bring its Pinnacle Program to Gloucester High School. The Pinnacle is a mobile resilience and team-building program centred on a sevenmetre-high high-ropes unit. Activities are designed to build confidence, teamwork and personal growth. A typical session lasts about an hour and can accommodate groups of up to 30 young people. For Delhuntie, adventure is more than excitement—it can be a pathway towards confidence, resilience and positive change. "We hope to build resilience, trust and positive behaviours and choices in the young people of Gloucester," Marg said, looking forward to bringing the Pinnacle Program to Gloucester.

He's the Hockey Man By Kim TEOH

Helen Scale speaks of Delhuntie Park mending broken lives.

WHAT drives Ollie Rinkin to give more than 60 years of his time and talent to sport, particularly hockey? “I value comradeship and some of my opponents in hockey are my best mates,” Ollie said. “I’m happy keeping young people off the streets and training youngsters to excel in the game.” Ollie became a foundation member of the Gloucester Hockey Association in 1955 after teachers at Gloucester High School formed a hockey club. He had been training with the Gloucester under-18 rugby league team but hockey soon became his passion. His representative career began in 1957 when he played for Manning

Valley against a touring New Zealand team. Ollie later represented the district against Queensland, Townsville, the USA, England and New Zealand. At just 17, he began coaching juniors in 1958 and senior hockey the following year. He went on to play 30 years of first-grade hockey, including 25 years as captain-coach, and coached Gloucester Public School to five State titles. His contribution extended well beyond the playing field. He served as Northern NSW delegate to the NSW Junior Hockey Association and was a NSW selector for 20 years, managing NSW under-14 and under-16 teams. His achievements have been widely recognised.

He was named Rotary Citizen of the Year in 1991, Gloucester Sportsperson of the Year in 1994, and became a life member of Hockey NSW in 2000. Ollie also excelled in cricket, tennis, rugby league and athletics, and served as president of Gloucester Sports Council for 11 years. Even after retiring from a 60-year automotive career at 75, Ollie continued coaching young people. “I trained under Ollie from 10-17 years old,” Mark Holstein said. “He put Gloucester on the map as a great hockey town and all of us kids saw in him a father figure producing some great hockey players.” His greatest legacy is not the awards, but the generations of young players he has inspired and encouraged along the way.

Croquet and Crockpots

Amenities upgraded in Gloucester, Taree

By Dianne SHANLEY

q

THIS week saw the commencement of the weekly Crockpot Lunch competition, with Vince Costigan, one of the club’s newest members, scoring an average of nine hoops to take out the Avon Valley Innsponsored prize. The club thanked Simon for his generous support. At the recent Annual General Meeting, President Ashleigh Hickman gave an informed report on the previous busy year, thanking the outgoing committee and members for their generous support over that time. Ashleigh then welcomed Grahame Stelzer, who took the chair for the election of the new committee for the 2026-27 year. Ashleigh Hickman was returned as President, with Denise Bruce as Vice President and Elaine Leach as Treasurer, all retaining their positions. The Secretary position remains undecided. Due to ill health, Judy has decided to take a well-deserved break. Bev Murray is Games Captain, with Chris Sims, Dianne Shanley and Pam Howard as committee members. The Catering Committee comprises Carol Newitt, Dianne Shanley and Robyn Franks. Ashleigh also extended special thanks to Al Minis and Chris Sims

Vince Costigan receiving this week’s award from member Pam Howard.

THE amenities block at King George V Memorial Park in Gloucester has been upgraded as part of a program of works by MidCoast Council. The Gloucester project was funded through Duralie Specified Community Infrastructure Funding. The works program also included two projects in Taree. A new, more accessible and user-friendly amenities building has been constructed on Albert Street in Taree's CBD, replacing an ageing facility. The project was jointly funded by the NSW Government, through its Stronger Country Communities Fund, and MidCoast Council. Maintenance work at Stokes Park amenities block in Taree

was funded through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program and a co-contribution from Council's Building Renewal Program. "Providing safe, accessible and inclusive public amenities is an important part of supporting our community and welcoming visitors to the region," Council spokesman Liam Bulley said. The projects are part of Council's broader amenities upgrade program. To view completed and planned projects, visit the Council's amenities upgrade program page on https://haveyoursay. m i d c o a s t . n s w. g o v. a u / amenities-upgrade-program through U3A or visit the courts at 1.30pm on Wednesdays, when members Pam and Di will be available to assist with teaching the sport. Mountain Man Tri Challenge

By Marilyn SANDERSON

GLOUCESTER Mountain Man Tri Challenge will be held on 13 September, marking the 32nd anniversary of the gruelling athletic event, which began in 1991. There have only been three years when the event

has not been held. This year, more than 210 people have registered, with 75 competing as individuals and a further 45 teams taking part. Some individuals have registered to compete in the run leg only. In addition to locals

from the Gloucester district, competitors from as far away as Sydney, the Central Coast, Mid Coast, Port Stephens and Newcastle will take on the challenge. What makes the challenge unique is that much of the course is crosscountry.

Organiser Sam De Witt explained to News of the Area that the cycling leg for individual competitors commences at 8am at the southern end of Boundary Road, while teams start at 8.30am. “Much of the 22-kilometre course, which

New Year’s Eve Fireworks? Yes or No?

By Wendy BUSWELL

THE Gloucester Business Chamber's new committee is holding a public meeting at Club Gloucester on Wednesday 9 September at 7 pm to gauge community support for the New Year's Eve Fireworks event. The Business Chamber initiative began in 2021 q

to bring the community together after the COVID pandemic and marked its fifth year in 2025. As John Watts reported in News Of The Area in November 2025, the event was at risk of cancellation because of funding issues, but the Chamber decided to continue. The public meeting

gives local businesses and community members a chance to help decide whether the New Year's Eve Fireworks event should take place in 2026 and what support it may need. As discussed at the Business Chamber meeting on Wednesday 26 August, if the event goes ahead, it will require financial and

physical support from businesses and community members. The Business Chamber encourages the community to attend the public meeting on Wednesday 9 September at 7pm in the upstairs room at Club Gloucester, or comment on the Gloucester Business Chamber's Facebook page.

SPY/MASTER SBS, 10.40pm

If you’re someone who finds international dramas where everyone speaks English unrealistic, be careful what you wish for. This cinematic Cold War thriller switches organically between English, Romanian, German, Arabic and Russian, depending on who’s speaking. The six-part story follows a rather perilous week in the life of fictional figure Victor Godeanu (Alec Secareanu, above right), the right-hand man to actual Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu (Claudiu Bleont) in 1978. Rightly fearful he’s about to be exposed as a Soviet spy, Victor takes a diplomatic trip to Germany as his chance to defect to the United States.

After last year’s Block saw bold colour-drenched rooms feature prominently, the class of 2026 has been much more sparing when it comes to highimpact hues. Beige, cream and natural tones have ruled supreme, but judge Shaynna Blaze declared during last night’s judging that the design “needs a defibrillator” and halfway through the competition, the teams are finally starting to see the light. This week’s guest suites introduce a green marble benchtop and pink tiling (don’t worry, they’re in separate houses) to the rather pallid palette we’ve seen so far. There’s also plenty of colourful commentary as 2018 contestant Spence Thomson steps in to help Tayla while dad Rick (both above) is recovering in hospital.

SBS, 7.30pm

Knee deep in Scottish stereotypes – from tartan and haggis to bagpipes and deep-fried Mars bars – Shaun Micallef guides comedian Luke McGregor (below right) on a tour of his ancestral homeland. The Hobart-born Rosehaven star admits he doesn’t know much about where his family comes from – and is surprised to learn his great-grandfather’s first name, let alone what he did for a living or why he left for Australia in 1930. After getting “kilted up” in Edinburgh, the travelling companions embark on an immersive journey through McGregor’s family tree. 0409

DEAR Larry,

Verse of the week

2 9 5 3 6 4 1 7 8

I’VE just been told of my success in getting a new job. While I’m thrilled, part of it involves networking. Not only do I hate large social gatherings, I also have trouble remembering people’s names. I’m considering declining the job offer. Larry C.

DEAR Jasminda,

Dorin's Drawings

9 1 7 8 3 5 6 4 2

By JASMINDA

Larry, my suggestion is to do what everyone else does. First, head to the pre-meeting wine bar (or avail yourself of your accommodation’s minibar) and/or practise the art of the tilted-head nod and the ‘is that Veronica from Melbourne at the canapé table? It is! Please excuse me,’ exit strategy. As for remembering people’s names, the easiest way is to use their name frequently during initial discussions, and then come up with an association. You need to be careful with this, though. If a person’s name is Tom and your association is Jones, don’t accidentally call him David after the department store when you next meet. Even worse, don’t go up to him, clear your throat, and burst into ‘My, my, my Delilah.’

and can result in numerous behaviours, including shunning the limelight and becoming an obscure agony aunt for a local paper. While I’m not suggesting this is your particular affliction, it could be, and it may be why you dislike networking. Alternatively, it could be because you detest the sensory overload of being surrounded by nattering people wearing lanyards and ill-fitting suits in a conference room with Jackson Pollock-style carpet and flickering fluorescent lights. And you hate it even more when one of those people comes up to you, arm extended for a power handshake, before spending the next 15 minutes talking about the weather and/or the traffic and then doing a deep-dive into the problematic intersection of digital nomadism and corporate governance, the whole time seemingly unaware of the parsley sprig lodged between his front teeth.

GLOUCESTER DISTRICT News Of The Area

media@newsofthearea.com.au

Gloucester property market defies the slide FROM Page 1

2022, with Sydney and Melbourne leading the declines. Home values in these capital cities dropped by 1.4 per cent and 1.2 per cent respectively over the month. Cotality also reported a decline in NSW regional values during July. However, average city and regional statistics are, in a real sense, irrelevant to property owners or buyers in any particular local property market. NOTA took the opportunity to chat to prominent local real estate

agent Jonny Tighe about recent property price behaviour in the Gloucester area. According to Mr Tighe, no market likes uncertainty and in the last several months there have been a number of layers of uncertainty affecting the property market, including the oil price shock, budget changes and three interest rate rises, all of which have had an impact on real estate prices after a period of significant growth. Mr Tighe believes the Gloucester market has held up ‘pretty well’. “Over the last 24-month

period we are probably up 10 to 15 per cent,” Mr Tighe said. “We have a market that presents value and a great lifestyle. “The demographic of the buyers from out of town is bundled into two groups being young families that want to buy a home, and people that are retiring to the area.” “Gloucester as a town is the number one in NSW for cash buyers,” Mr Tighe said. “We are perfectly isolated with a lot of services such as a hospital, a high school and a police station, but we are just an

hour from the coast, three hours to Hornsby, and an hour and a half from Newcastle, now with an international airport. “We are still seeing buyers who are selling for more and buying for less in our town, and the bit of uncertainty has brought forward their plans to move to the regions, which is really exciting. “At this stage we have probably flattened out, but we haven’t seen the dramatic falls we’ve seen in other areas. “Things are tough across the broader NSW market, but in our area we are still seeing buyers, and prices holding up.”

Give back to those who gave all

Ask the

real estate expert... When Buyers Say “It’s Too Much Work”

I’ve been in the real estate industry for over two decades and during that time I’ve walked through hundreds of properties with buyers. One comment I hear surprisingly often is, “There’s just too much work here.” The interesting thing is, they’re not always talking about major renovations. More often, it’s all the little jobs they’ve noticed along the way. I feel that the combination gives my buyers a feeling of overwhelm, and it all becomes too much for them to think about. A dripping tap, peeling paint, an untidy garden, stained carpet, a loose door handle, gutters full of leaves or a shed you can barely walk into. None of these are necessarily deal breakers on their own, but add them together and suddenly a buyer starts thinking about how much time and money they’ll need to spend after moving in. If you’re thinking of selling, take a walk around your home and try to look at it through a buyer’s eyes. Better still, ask someone who doesn’t live there what they notice. q IT is Legacy Week, the time for all Australians to show their support for the widows and children whose loved ones have served our country. “Legacy Week is a time for all of us to pause and reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices made by Australia's veterans and their families,” said the Minister for Veterans, David Harris. “While we honour the service of those who have worn our nation's uniform, we also recognise the families who have stood beside them through times of challenge, uncertainty and

loss.” During Legacy Week, thousands of volunteers across Australia will be in the community selling Legacy badges, bears and other merchandise to raise vital funds for veteran families. ““I encourage everyone to show their support this week by making a small donation and purchasing a Legacy badge to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of veteran families and help Legacy continue its invaluable work,” Minister Harris said. Since 1923, Legacy has

supported the families of veterans who have died or been seriously injured through military service, providing financial assistance, wellbeing programs, social connection opportunities and educational support. The Legacy badge is a symbol of support for veterans' families and the Australian values of mateship, compassion and fairness. In New South Wales, Legacy supports around 10,000 partners and children of veterans who have given their lives or health in service to the nation.

Bird flu threat gets real for elephant seals IF ever there was news that illustrated how catastrophic experts viewed a developing situation, the Australian Government’s decision to withdraw expeditioners from Macquarie Island research station must near top of the list. The Australian Government’s Antarctic Division has made the difficult decision to temporarily withdraw staff from Macquarie Island research station due to the psychosocial risk to expeditioners posed by a potential H5 avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak on the remote island. The research station, where 24 expeditioners currently live and work, was established on the Southern Ocean island about 1,500km south-east of Tasmania in 1948. While the risk to humans remains low, a significant mortality event during the upcoming seal breeding season could expose expeditioners to prolonged psychological stress and other workplace impacts. The health, safety and wellbeing of expeditioners is the highest priority for the Australian Antarctic Division, making their withdrawal from Macquarie Island a necessary precaution. Sending a ship to extract our staff from Macquarie Island is a significant undertaking. “We’ve seen what this disease can do, based on our experience at Heard Island and McDonald Islands,” said Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Deputy Secretary Sean Sullivan. “Given the risks to our expeditioners, and to minimise risks across the whole Antarctic Program, we consider it necessary to make this decision in advance of any significant wildlife mortality event.” The situation at

Macquarie Island is different to Australia’s Antarctic stations, where stringent H5 bird flu preparations can manage risks for expeditioners. While H5 bird flu has not yet been detected on the island, it is home to large elephant seal populations close to station buildings – and expert assessments predict a high likelihood of a significant mortality event during the upcoming breeding season. Elephant seals have proved particularly susceptible to H5 bird flu, with pup mortality rates of more than 90 per cent discovered in some colonies in the sub-Antarctic external territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. “We’ve seen what this disease can do, based on our experience at Heard Island and McDonald Islands,” Mr Sullivan said. “Macquarie Island is unique in that thousands of elephant seal pups are born close to the station every spring. No other Australian Antarctic station is in this position, and there are no elephant seal colonies on mainland Australia.” Australia’s icebreaking research and supply vessel, RSV Nuyina, will travel to the island in early October to retrieve personnel and essential cargo. The Australian Antarctic Division is currently working through steps to mitigate impacts for our international monitoring obligations, wildlife monitoring and infrastructure, and to best prepare the station for temporary closure. Overseas experience shows few direct actions can be taken to mitigate the impacts of H5 bird flu on native species. Owing to the island’s remoteness and harsh conditions, active control measures for wildlife are not planned at this stage. Fortunately, wildlife on Macquarie Island exists in a

q

largely undisturbed state. The territory is free of most invasive species that threaten native species and ecosystems commonly found in mainland Australia. This follows significant investment and effort in previous years to eradicate rabbits, rats and mice, which has boosted resilience and increased chances of recovery among island seals.

Gloucester Womens Open Day By Peter WILDBLOOD

THE Gloucester Womens Open Day was held this last Friday 28 August with a huge filed of women golfers from the length and breadth of the Lower North Coast golfing

district. The event was an Individual Stableford and the winners across the three regular women’s golfing divisions were Nikki Richardson from Dungog, 40, Alison Fowler from Taree,

A number of turnovers proved costly, with Taree finding the back of the net again before half-time. The Scorpions went into the second half still in the contest but needed greater urgency, quicker passing and more attacking pressure to get back into the game.

Taree extended their lead in the second half and, despite several changes and a determined effort from Gloucester, the Scorpions were unable to apply enough sustained pressure. Dellsperger, River Cowley, Peter Clinch and Soupidis all had

opportunities in the second half but could not find the finish they needed. The final score was Gloucester Scorpions 1, Taree Jaguars 4. The result brings an end to an impressive 2026 season for the Scorpions, who finished with nine wins,

THE Gloucester Scorpions under-14s finished their season with a 4-1 semi-final loss to Taree Jaguars last Saturday. The Scorpions started strongly, matching Taree for possession and creating several opportunities to break into the final third. Taree were also dangerous, finding space down both flanks and creating some threatening positions early in the match. Gloucester struck first through Eli Soupidis, who latched onto a terrific long ball from Max Dellsperger. Soupidis showed great determination to chase down the ball before finishing the move with a well-taken shot. Taree responded almost immediately, finding an equaliser after the Scorpions were caught ball-watching. CONTINUED Page 15
