“The project is really exciting for people my age, and is something that Coffs Harbour is missing and really needs,” Catherine said.

Coffs Harbour Senior College Creative and Performing Arts teacher Cheryl Ward said it was important for local youths to have access to a well-designed and resourced public library.

“While a public library offers benefits to every young person, for some, this youth space will be

their only opportunity to access the technology and resources needed to learn and grow outside of the school environment,” Ms Ward said.

Coffs Harbour Mayor Cr Denise Knight said it was refreshing and sometimes surprising to hear the kinds of things local youths want from their library.

“Knowing that we’re creating a space so our young people can have access to the best possible cultural, social and educational resources keeps me inspired and motivated,” Cr Knight said.

spaces within libraries provide an environment for young people to connect, study, relax, dream, work and hang out together.

“A dedicated youth space shows teens they are valued by the community and typically leads to a deeper engagement with other areas of the library,” Ms Lipa said.

“It’s interesting and surprising for us to hear the insights of young people who have different and new ways of thinking, helping us to develop and create spaces to meet and exceed their requirements.”

The meeting was one of three library youth space meetings conducted during July.

A financial win for Volunteers

“It is important to support the efforts of these organisations and the individuals that allow them to function.”

Woolgoolga Seniors’ Centre received $5,000 through the Be Connected program to run a free ‘Health My Way’ program that teaches digital health and literacy.

Woolgoolga Regional Community Gardens Association received $4,700 to construct a large outdoor covered gathering place.

“This will create a space for the whole community to enjoy, especially the groups that use the gardens for educational activities,” Mr Hogan said.

Woopi Gardens was established more than 10 years ago and was the first community garden in Woolgoolga.

By Sandra MOON IF you have visited a doctor’s surgery in the last week you will have seen a marked change, with doctors and staff now donning surgical face masks.

This is part of new advice applying to hospitals and community health settings that came into effect across NSW on Friday, 24 July.

“To ensure we keep our hospitals safe, health workers at all public hospitals must now wear a surgical mask if they are within 1.5 metres of

patients. Patients are also required to wear a mask, where possible.”

“In line with this advice, all visitors to our hospitals and Community Health facilities must also wear a mask. We encourage you to wear your own mask if you have one that is in good, clean condition. If you are visiting the hospital and you don’t have a mask, our staff can provide one,” said Mr Dowrick.

Visitors to hospitals and community health facilities have also been limited, with one visitor allowed per patient per day.

Since early February, 28,000 tests have been conducted on the Mid North Coast, including 9,376 in Coffs Harbour and 1,653 in Bellingen (as at August 2).

“We are constantly monitoring the situation across the region and are well prepared for any increase in COVID-19 cases.

“To help us protect the community it is critical that people continue to come forward for testing even for the mildest of symptoms, such as a runny nose, scratchy throat or a cough,” said Mr Dowrick.

“Although there are no new cases of COVID-19 on the Mid North Coast, we are continuing to do all we can to protect our community.

“These measures, along with the COVID-safe practices we have implemented across the district, will help us protect our community,” he said.

Three locals reached the finals at Boomerang Beach where they shone throughout the event, surfing in punchy three-to-four foot righthanders.

Lyle Elder from Moonee Beach finished runner-up in the Over-60s division. Also finishing runner-up was Korora’s Ricky Grimson in the Over-50s division.

Meanwhile there’s plenty of young talent on show in Coffs Harbour this week.

Wednesday saw the start of the 2020 NSW Woolworths Junior Shortboard Titles with almost 300 surfers in the under-16 and under-18 age divisions vying for a state title.

The event continues until the finals are held on Monday.

There’ll be no rest though as Tuesday and Wednesday will see the High School State Titles held on our breaks.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh welcomed the announcement and said the Commissioner would be a strong voice for local farmers.

“Coffs Harbour is home to diverse agricultural operations and

I look forward to working with the Commissioner to back our farmers and ensure we have a vibrant industry into the future,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Quinlivan said he was honoured to be appointed to the role and would advocate strongly on behalf of the state’s farmers.

“My goal is to see a stronger and more vibrant agricultural industry in NSW and I look forward to working closely with farmers to understand what they need to take the industry to the next level,” Mr Quinlivan said.

Creating ‘food security’ on the Coffs Coast

JOSHUA and Tomoko Allen are on a mission to ensure local food supply will ‘never go back to the way it was’ with the arrival of their $27 million Project Scope.

The husband and wife team behind Synchronicity Farm’s The Raw Food Hub have been run off their feet since COVID-19 shook the local farmer-to-market supply chain.

Now, they’re focused on making the Coffs Coast completely ‘food resilient’ with Project Scope: a Horticulture Internship Farm near Bellingen and Farmer Community Marketplace near Coffs Harbour.

“These two initiatives will enable end-to-end supply chain connectivity

for farmers and result in 570 new jobs,” Joshua said.

The initiative will provide graduates from accredited learning partners a sponsored, twoyear on-farm placement to help them put everything they learned into practice.

“We will be able to give 100 new farmers the opportunity to lease a quarter-acre block with all the infrastructure they need to start a microagribusiness,” Joshua said.

“They will receive farm hand support, mentoring by experienced farmers, plus marketing and administrative support; as well as a supply/purchase agreement so they know what they’ll be paid for their produce, before they even put a seed in the ground.”

Bellingen, that the region is food secure.”

SOME of the Coffs Coast’s seasoned veterans of the surf covered themselves in glory over the past week at the NSW Surfmasters Titles.

FARMERS on the Coffs Coast have another dignitary in their corner with the appointment of the State’s first Agriculture Commissioner, Daryl Quinlivan.

The appointment was announced earlier this week by Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall, who was also in town for the launch of the Solitary Ranger, the NSW Government’s largest ever offshore patrol vessel.

Mr Marshall said the Commissioner would champion NSW farmers’ rights and delivered on a major election promise.

A SOUTHERN Cross University scientist, researching geochemistry and soil science, has been announced as a 2020 Australian Research Council Future Fellow.

Professor Ed Burton, Head of Environmental Geochemistry and Mineralogy at Southern Cross GeoScience, will use the prestigious Future Fellowship, worth $1,048,328 over four years, to explore how antimony geochemistry interacts with the iron cycle in soils, sediments and aquatic systems.

“Antimony is a critical mineral resource which plays an important and growing role in our daily lives.

It is widely used in plastics, textiles, electronic and computer equipment and to harden metal alloys in batteries, bearings and ammunition,” said Professor Burton.

Antimony is also central to a wide-range of emerging technologies, such as phasechange memory devices which increase computing speeds and liquid metal batteries

“Yet antimony is also a carcinogenic toxin and a priority environmental pollutant of increasing concern,” Professor Burton said.

There are more than 50,000 derelict mine sites across Australia.

“My Future Fellowship will look at optimising approaches to clean up antimony contamination at many of these locations by bringing together an innovative combination of advanced analytical tools to examine antimony-iron interactions in soils, sediments and experimental mineral systems,” Professor Burton said.

“The disused antimony processing site at Urunga is a close-to-home example of contaminated site remediation that benefits the environment and the community.

Southern Cross University was involved in assessing the extent and nature of antimony contamination at that site,” said Professor Burton.

“These days it is a wetlands walk area for visitors and tourists. Yet for more than four decades the ore processing plant at Urunga was left derelict, leaving antimony and other heavy metals to leach into the environment.”

“This project will put Australia at the leading edge of an exciting new research direction and will create a long-term legacy of national benefit,” Professor Burton said.

“By providing new knowledge for environmentally-sustainable antimony mining, this project will also be of strong strategic benefit to Australia’s future prosperity.”

COFFS Harbour City Council’s ‘Coffs Coast Businesses Care’ program helps local business owners comply with NSW Public Health Orders.

Businesses can be involved in the free program by following the Federal Government’s 5 Step Process to keep COVID safe.

The steps include implementing physical distancing measures, being compliant with NSW Health, ensuring safe hygiene for staff and customers, working to industry clean guidelines and standards and creating and using a COVID Safe Plan for businesses.

Once this is in place, business owners can register with the ‘Coffs Coast Businesses Care’ initiative on 6degreesco. com.au to receive a Coffs Coast Businesses Care window sticker for display, COVIDSafe (government) posters covering hygiene and physical distancing, plus a digital button and banner images for online promotion.

Council’s 6 degrees platform provides support and resources for creating CovidSafe Plans and links to training, workshops and groups offering business assistance.

Council’s Environmental Health Officers are also engaging with local café and restaurant businesses as part of their community safety role to assist businesses comply with the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Public Health Orders.

“Our primary purpose will be to work with, guide and assist business operators towards compliance with the NSW Government’s Public

Health Orders,” said Robert Percival, Council’s Section Leader Compliance.

“We are also encouraging food businesses to add a free

business listing to the Coffs Coast tourism website at www. coffscoast.com – with more than 25,000 visitors to the website each month, it’s a great

way to get your business seen,” added Fiona Barden, Council’s Section Leader Industry and Destination Development.

Sherry said local community feedback about the market had been positive.

“Woolgoolga and the northern beaches people support anything that's going on,” she said.

“People love that it's in Woolgoolga and that they don’t have to go into Coffs Harbour now to attend a market, and we are supporting local growers as well.”

The idea for the market was borne by Sherry’s company, Another Tasty Event, which has the contract for Curryfest, Blues & Berries Festival, Eat Street Woolgoolga, Street Eats at the Jetty, Ocean Harvest Festival, and Coffs Coast Beer, Food & Wine Festival.

“When Covid hit we lost absolutely every single one of our events,” Ms Price said.

Sherry was particularly

gutted about having to recently announce the postponement of this year’s Curryfest.

“It's our biggest and most favourite event,” she said.

“We started planning for this year's Curryfest in October 2019 and we had a very high profile celebrity chef locked in for the event and new food stalls, but we can't do social distancing at a festival that gets 16,000 people.”

The Village Farmers Market attracts around 300 locals and visitors to Woolgoolga each week and is held every Friday from 7am to 11.30am at the basketball court in Queen St, Woolgoolga.

Most of the stallholders possess Eftpos facilities, with only a handful of stalls relying on cash-only transactions for purchases.

WITH COVID-19 forcing the cancellation of many local festivals this year, the recent establishment of Woolgoolga’s Village Farmers Market has been strongly welcomed by both locals and festival organisers.

The weekly event showcases the local produce and handmade products of around seventeen local stallholders, with more coming on board every week or two.

Salt water is the best medicine

By Andrew VIVIAN ABOUT 30 years ago, local identity Mick McAvigan and a friend were on life saving duty at Sawtell when they decided that it might be a good idea to swim from the Surf Club to the island at Sawtell Headland.

It was such a good experience for them that they decided to do it every day before work.

Their swim has now developed into two regular, morning groups that swim at either 6:15am or 9am.

Mick said the benefits of swimming with the same group daily are both physical and social.

“We call it Doctor Ocean,” he added.

Peter Robertson, who swims with the 9am group, echoed Mick’s sentiments.

“There’s something wonderful about the ocean.” q

Having a coffee each morning with like-minded people has developed into strong friendships and swimmers often help each other out away from the beach.

Across the two groups, the age range is fifteen to 90 years old and both groups can attract more than 30 swimmers during holiday times.

THE tragic passing of well-loved local teen Koby Mitchell has sparked a wave of community support for those less fortunate.

Koby, 19, died unexpectedly in Jindabyne late last month.

An outpouring of tributes flowed in for the teen, described as ‘selfless’, ‘having a heart of gold’ and ‘everyone's brother’.

After being laid to rest in a private ceremony, friends felt there was more they could do to honour Koby’s memory.

For Grace Farlow, it was setting up a GoFundMe to raise money for local charity, Pete’s Place.

“Koby was just the kind of guy who would have a conversation and make time for anyone,” Grace said.

“He would buy people food on the street, he spent so much time at the skate park teaching young kids how to do tricks; he was just a really selfless person with a beautiful heart.

“We had a close friend’s sister pass away last year and they started a GoFundMe account for charity after her death; Koby only had $300 in his account and he donated $100 to that - that’s where we got the idea.”

By Emma DARBIN POPULAR annual Coffs Harbour pop culture convention Nexus Con will be held online this weekend, in light of COVID-19.

It will be Australia’s first entirely online pop culture convention.

The annual event usually attracts around 2,000 people from all over NSW and interstate to the region every year.

Nexus Online will feature 24 guests from around the world and 47 sessions, including an ‘Industry Stream’ and an online Cosplay Competition.

There will also be an Esports Competition involving Super Smash Brothers and Valorant tournaments, run by the Australian Esports League (AEL).

The convention will kick off with an Opening Ceremony at 10am on Saturday August 8 and concludes with a Closing Ceremony at 5pm on Sunday.

Some of the sessions on offer over the weekend include Collecting Comics in 2020, Special Effects Make-up, Star Wars Academia, So, You Want to Make Games?, Making Comic Books, Getting a Job in Games, Prop Making 101, So, You Want to be a Writer?, The Art of Storytelling, Psychology of Gaming and much more.

Multiple live streams will be simultaneously releasing both live and pre-recorded content such as talks, interviews, panels, workshops and Q&A sessions.

All the sessions are interactive, allowing viewers to ask questions, take part in polls or participate in live chat rooms.

The sessions will be available on-demand after they’ve finished streaming so participants can re-watch

their favourite sessions or watch a session they missed.

The event was the brainchild of young people on the Mid North Coast whose vision was to create an inclusive, family-friendly event that would bring together like-minded people to share their interests in all things pop culture.

COFFS Harbour and Sawtell Surf Life Saving Clubs have been awarded funding to upgrade their facilities from the Acting Minister for Sport, Mr. Geoff Lees.

Late last month the Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh joined Minister Lee at Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club which received over $30,000 to upgrade its security system and replace clubhouse roller doors.

Meanwhile, Sawtell Surf Life Saving Club received over $58,000 to construct a waste management compound.

“North Coast Surf Life Saving clubs play a vital role patrolling our beaches and keeping us safe in and out of the water,” Mr. Singh said.

“The drought and

bushfires have had a devastating effect on North Coast communities but our local volunteers never wavered in their commitment to ensuring our safety.”

CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW, Steven Pearce, said the latest funding would ensure facilities remained rescue ready, safe, accessible and secure.

“Surf Life Saving Clubs are often the hub of communities and our volunteer lifesavers need fit-for-purpose facilities so they can focus on saving lives,” Mr. Pearce said.

Mr. Terry Maher, President of the Coffs Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club, told News of The Area he was “pretty chuffed” with the funding as fundraising for urgent jobs had been difficult during COVID-19.

“We need to replace the five large roller doors at the front,” he said.

“With all the salt in the environment, it doesn't matter how much maintenance you do, the elements beat you in the end and they have to be refurbished or replaced.”

“We also want to put in a card swipe security system downstairs to be operated from the office.”

Sheena McTackett, President of the Sawtell Surf Life Saving Club, said the funding will allow the club to move forward with their refurbishments.

“The funding fits into our long term plan to redevelop the building,” she said.

“We have completed Stage One of our redevelopment and now to be compliant we need a compound for waste bins, bottles and a grease trap.”

Employment Strategy Launched

REGIONAL Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC) and Northern Rivers (RDANR), launched their North Coast Workforce Strategy and Action Plan in Bellingen and Lismore last week, a plan which aims to place local stakeholders at the centre of their model.

The launch is the culmination of collaborative efforts between the organisations and the plan aims to be a catalyst for change and the beginnings of a new approach to solving regional employment issues.

Included in the strategy

is the need to address the duplication of initiatives set up to deal with regional unemployment and the lack of consistent funding to support programmes.

The plan proposes a structured approach of how to address unemployment in the region and includes the forming of a regional board and working groups to implement key strategies and actions.

The strategy was launched

by RDAMNC and RDANR alongside federal members of parliament for each region, Mr Pat Conaghan, member for Cowper, and Hon Kevin Hogan, member for Page.

Mr Conaghan said, “The North Coast NSW Employment Strategy and Action Plan launched today is a good, local initiative that I support as better collaboration will help to support growth and employment opportunities.”

“The employment system is broken, and it has been for a long time, this plan maps a way forward that will provide a better solution for all involved” said Ms Kerry Grace, CEO of RDAMNC. “No collective strategy to address employment opportunities currently exists and it needs to begin by connecting with employers.”

Environmental Trust for the development of a Children’s Environmental Education Garden.

Up to 2,500 students visit the Botanic Gardens for education purposes each year and another 1,000 attend for back to nature experiences, however there is currently no dedicated space in the gardens for

outdoor education.

In partnership with the Botanic Gardens, the Children’s Environmental Education Garden will fulfil this need, with an education centre plus digging garden for students to get their hands dirty, learning how to plant, grow and compost.

The Children’s Environmental Education Garden will be located in the prime display area of the North Coast Regional Botanic Gardens, near the water wise garden.

Prosper Coffs Harbour Environmental Trust Manager, Melissa Nunn said, “By establishing the Children’s Environmental Education Garden we hope to inspire the love of the great outdoors for the next generation.”

“The area will be central to not only children’s education, but also teaching them life skills such as problem solving, teamwork and creativity,” she said.

“However, to complete this important project for the community, we need more financial support.”

‘Solitary Ranger’ now patrolling our seas

ILLEGAL fishers beware, Coffs Harbour is now home to the largest and most technologically advanced offshore patrol vessel accessed by the NSW Government.

Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall officially named and launched ‘Solitary Ranger’ at Coffs Harbour this week and said the $3.3 million vessel would be a valuable tool in the NSW Government’s arsenal.

“This will allow us to crack down on illegal fishers from Sydney to the Queensland border and even out to Lord Howe Island,” Mr Marshall said.

“With a greater capacity for long-range patrols, and the ability to handle rough offshore conditions, the Solitary Ranger can head further out to sea where more and more commercial and recreational

fishing is taking place.”

Those doing the wrong thing have been warned.

“Fisheries officers will have the latest mapping and surveillance equipment at their fingertips, such as infrared cameras, to help catch anyone doing the wrong thing,” Mr Marshall said.

“It’s critical we maintain a strong compliance presence in NSW waters to ensure we have sufficient fish stocks for generations to come.”

The Solitary Ranger can undertake a range of activities including ocean patrols, surveillance activities and targeted compliance operations.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said Coffs Harbour is the perfect location to house the vessel, situated ideally between Sydney and

Tweed.

“Our region is home to some of the State’s best fishing spots, so it’s vital we protect our aquatic resources and tackle the issues of illegal fishing head on,” Mr Singh said.

The Solitary Ranger was built by family-owned North Coast company Yamba Welding and Engineering and at 20 metres long is the largest vessel they have ever built.

The Solitary Ranger’s rigid hull inflatable boat has been named after devoted Department of Primary Industries fisheries officer Wayne Currie, who passed away in 2019.

Bushfire Legal Aid

By Sandra MOON FARMERS, small business and regional communities recovering from the worst bushfire season in living memory will benefit from close to $5 million in Commonwealth funding for NSW’s legal assistance services.

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Disaster Recovery John Barilaro, said free legal support is playing an important role in how well people, businesses and communities recover from disasters.

“Bushfires have devastated the homes, businesses and livelihoods of so many people across our regions and now anyone facing legal problems as a result will have access to more free legal support than ever

“Almost $3 million in funding will be directed to legal assistance services for individuals navigating insurance claims, tenancy issues, financial hardship, social security entitlements and other legal problems caused by the bushfires.

“A further $2 million will be invested in legal services for small businesses and primary producers. This will allow Legal Aid NSW to launch a new grants program, enabling private lawyers to access grants of aid to deliver free legal services to local businesses impacted by bushfires,” he said.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said the funding will boost the capacity of Legal Aid, Community Legal Centres and the Aboriginal Legal Service to support individuals in bushfire affected areas across the State.

“This is great news for anyone whose livelihood has been torn apart by the bushfires. More pro bono solicitors and more legal assistance will be available for farmers and small businesses seeking assistance and advice on the financial issues they face, including credit, banking and debt,” Mr Speakman said.

“From the South Coast, to the Snowy Valley, to the Southern Highlands and to the North and Mid-North Coasts, anyone facing legal problems as a result of the bushfires will have access to more free legal support than ever before.”

The $4.9 million Bushfire Funding Agreement is part of the Australian Government’s $2 billion response to the 2019-20 Bushfire Disaster over two years.

During the lockdown period the theatre staged a number of online Cardboard Crowd Concerts, featuring local artists performing to a theatre full of characters made out of cardboard by creative locals.

Jetty Memorial theatre coordinator Natalie Boyle said the online concerts received a good reception from the community.

“The Cardboard Crowd Concerts had over 4000 views during the season and were very well received,” she said.

Featured in the production were over 160 characters, including the Queen, Sir Elton John, animals and a host of other famous people and characters.

“We also animated some of the characters, with the dog wagging it’s tail and a section standing at the end of the final performance,” said Natalie.

Cinematinee film screenings restarted on Thursday 23 July with two sessions scheduled every second Thursday at 2.00pm and 6.00pm, with audience capacity for each session

limited to 44 people.

Natalie told News Of The Area that “All four screenings of the film Romantic Road sold out over Thursday and Friday of our first week back, I think people enjoyed the escapism of a film about a road trip across India.”

Live performances will return on Friday 7 August with local singer songwriter Heather Rose being joined on stage by didgeridoo player Rob Canning for a unique

musical presentation.

Productions from local community theatre groups are planned for later in the year providing regulations allow.

Coffs Coast Rising Star

LOCAL rising star Bonnie Ferguson is an accomplished singer, songwriter and actress.

At the age of eight she started busking every weekend, singing and playing guitar, which gave her more experience and confidence.

Bonnie loves busking and it even paid for her first trip to Los Angeles with her mum. ”I have been so lucky to have a mum who has been involved in the entertainment industry, to help guide me. I couldn’t have done it without her. Mum even introduced me to Christopher Akins, who is great fun,” said Bonnie.

“I remember when I was twelve and I played the rose seller in ‘Oliver’ at the Bowraville theatre, it was

then I decided I wanted to act because I just loved being on stage. Soon after this I joined an acting agency in Sydney,” she said.

Bonnie said that she was honoured to be a guest speaker at last year’s ‘The Next Wave’ film festival in Coffs Harbour, as she loved watching all the short films made by young filmmakers in the area.

Bonnie told News of The Area she has a few films in production, but some have been put on hold because of Covid-19, such as ‘Just Ruby,’ an Australian film written by Damien Leith.

In the film, Bonnie plays a lead role as Betty, an independent woman who is falling apart at the seams, dealing with alcoholism and loss.

Another film in production is ‘Mask of the Evil Apparition’ directed by Alex Proyas, who has written films like ‘Knowing’ which went number one at the Box Office in 2009.

Bonnie has spent her last few months in isolation perfecting her craft.

“I have liked having the

extra time during Covid-19 to work on my music and write some new songs,” said Bonnie.

ANNIE Keipert is a local mum of four, with three children in primary school and a sixteen month old toddler.

Annie also runs her own small business from her home.

Her older children are in year four, year two and kindergarten, and like so many in our community, Annie was faced with the challenge of homeschooling all her kids at the same time.

Annie’s secondary school teacher hubby was also working partially from home at the time.

There were many challenges, not the least of which was the lack of space in the house, as well as a variety of technological challenges, like sourcing new devices or having enough capacity with the home internet network.

Annie’s son Ezra is five years old and was anxious about making friends before commencing kindergarten at the beginning of the year, and was just starting to connect with other children in his group when the family elected to keep the kids at home.

While Ezra and his siblings

performed well in their home based schooling and were well supported with online learning by the school, he has shown an increase in his anxiety about friendships and was nervous about returning to the classroom.

“We have felt a bit disconnected from the school, not being able to connect with the teacher as we had with the

older kids, and we have missed the big activities like the Easter Hat parade, although Ezra made one as a home school activity,” said Annie.

One upside of the past few months, is the time that the Keipert’s have had to connect as a family, finding a common interest in watching Star Wars movies together.

COFFS Coast veterans and their family members are encouraged to share their stories of service, as part of a month-long campaign launched by the NSW Government leading up to Second World War commemorations.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said ‘One Month to Remember VP Day’ will ensure the COVID-19 pandemic does not take away from the significance of this year’s 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP Day).

“Everyone is encouraged to share their stories, pictures and videos on social media for this special 75th anniversary tribute using the hashtag #VeteranStory75years,” Mr Singh said.

“These stories are precious and special and they should never be forgotten.”

The NSW Government is compiling a digital stories catalogue from WWII veterans and widows which is available as an online educational resource for schools and universities.

Acting Minister for Veterans Geoff Lee said Second World War veterans are still living with us today and this campaign is about ensuring we capture their stories to tell future generations.

“We are living through a once in a lifetime pandemic right now and our nation also lived through a horrible conflict no generation should ever experience again,” Mr Lee said.

“We must not let COVID-19 get in the way

of honouring our veterans’ service to our nation, and by encouraging people to share their stories digitally we will create a lasting legacy.

“Revealing their war experiences is a special privilege we are so grateful for and our online collection of stories will eternalise their memories for future generations so we don’t forget their sacrifice.”

VP Day on 15 August commemorates the end of WWII, which saw more than 27,000 Australians killed and a further 23,000 wounded.

BDC announces 2020/2021 student leaders under an innovative leadership structure

Bishop Druitt College students have more innovative learning opportunities than ever before.

The senior leadership structure at Bishop Druitt College was redesigned and put into action in 2019, allowing for more student opportunities that include the areas of leadership, service, the arts, academic, and sport.

Within this leadership structure, each pair of school captains works with a staff mentor. The role of this staff mentor is to help and give guidance to the captains with direction and as an ideas sounding board, working effectively with their committees and as a conduit to help gain action on any decisions that are made by the committee.

For this new structure to work effectively, current best-practice and BDC students have identified that authentic, valid, heard, acted on student voice is fundamental to any leadership model, their fulfillment and success.

Nambucca local finds personal balance through art

TIM Castle grew up on some very mean streets in England where he quickly learned to fight to defend himself.

It was an area where he excelled. Soon enough he was protecting others and gaining a reputation as a hard man that you didn’t mess with.

Over time Tim became a nurse, before moving into mental health and eventually into counselling.

Moving to Australia with his wife Fay and his two young

”Art has been a constant in my life and gave me release, it has always allowed me to connect with my gentle side,” said Tim. His paintings are visceral and immediate, often somewhat unsettling, and at times delightfully humorous, with echoes of Salvidor Dali throughout.

“I have my own style, which I think of as representist [sic], because the images represent my thoughts and feelings,” said Tim. “I paint for myself, and find peace in the total involvement in the process, which is reward in itself.”

Stimulated by his experiences in life, a deep concern for the environment, and sometimes just by comments from others, Tim has generated hundreds of intriguing canvases and continues to work on more, finding peace and balance in the Song’ in 2014 and ‘Companion process.

The annual HSC Study Guide is packed with practical information and advice to help students achieve their best in the upcoming HSC exams, with written exams due to start on October 20.

NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said many Year 12 students would be feeling a mix of nerves and excitement as

they looked to embark on the next chapter of their lives.

Ms Mitchell said these were normal emotions in what had been an ‘abnormal’ year.

“COVID-19 and the impact it has had on you, your families, your schools and your communities has been challenging but has also helped you uncover a layer of resolve and resilience you may not have known you had,” she says in the guide.

“The HSC will require hard work and focus over the coming months and I urge you to keep things in perspective and your health front of mind.

“I want you to do well but, more importantly, I want you to be well.”

The guide includes: strategies for keeping healthy, tips for effective study techniques, helpful advice from past HSC students and HSC markers, real HSC exam questions and more.

It also outlines how course requirements have been adapted or changed due to the impact of the pandemic.

The 2020 HSC cohort is the first to undertake a HSC that has a specific minimum literacy and numeracy requirement.

The guide provides information on how to meet this requirement for those who have yet to do so.

BUDDING young filmmakers are being called on to get creative and enter a short film in this year’s NEXTWAVE short film competition.

Coffs Harbour’s Screenwave International Film Festival (SWIFF) is again hosting the NEXTWAVE short film competition for young regional Australians aged between 10 and 25 years.

The Festival includes two competitions, the NEXTWAVE short film competition where all films must be less than five minutes long (including credits) and include the

phrase “What’s Next”.

Short films can range from a variety of genres including comedies, dramas, thrillers, science fiction, animation, documentary and personal essays.

The best films will premiere at SWIFF in Coffs Harbour in January 2021 during the NEXTWAVE Youth Film Awards, and tens of thousands of dollars in prizes are up for grabs across a variety of age categories.

NEXTWAVE’S other competition ‘Beyond the Bubble’ is a new category only open to youths aged 10 to 25 living within the Coffs Harbour local government area.

The aim of the ‘Beyond the Bubble’ competition is to capture stories from young people living in Coffs Harbour during COVID

restrictions, and what those experiences have been like.

Films must be oneminute long and shot in portrait style (like Tik Tok) and also include the phrase “What’s Next”.

The best entry will win a new 7th generation iPad 128gb courtesy of Coffs Harbour City Council, and the best five films will also screen at the NEXTWAVE Youth Film Awards held during SWIFF in January, alongside the NEXTWAVE main competition finalists.

Submissions are open now until 21 September and entry is free.

Real Time Bus Tracking COFFS Harbour has become a regional leader in transport with new tech, up and running, to help customers track the arrival of their bus and get an indication of available seating in real time.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the technology is on about 150 buses in Coffs Harbour as part of the first phase of the Transport Connected Bus Program.

The bus tracking technology can be accessed via the Trip Planner on the Transport NSW website, via the Opal Travel app, or by choosing from a range of third party transport apps.

“Customers are now able to track the location

of a bus, its estimated arrival at a stop, and how full the bus is, which means less time waiting at the stop and more time at your destination,” Mr Toole said.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said nine different operators are now using the new technology, providing more than 250 service routes around Coffs Harbour, including the popular 360, 369 and 372 routes.

“With the new technology being rolled out across other regional centres, Coffs Harbour is already up and running as one of three regional centres state-wide leading the charge on realtime tracking,” Mr Singh said.

“For customers, this will mean better trip planning as they will have access to data showing the bus location on its route and an indication of

the capacity.

Busway Regional Operations Manager Mark Lawrence said the new technology was already making a difference locally.

“Customers are only just beginning to discover the real-time app through our trial period and initial reactions have been positive about how it will make a real difference to how they plan their travel,” Mr Lawrence said.

There are about 120,000 customer bus trips per year in the Coffs Harbour area.

The nine local operators using the trip planning technology are; Busways North Coast, Forest Coach Lines, Sahdra Coaches, Newcombe Buses, Lemitscom Pty Ltd, Weick Buses, Keough Buses, Natureland Buses and Baldwin Buses.

Advanced estate planning MICHAEL has assets of $2 million. He is not in a relationship and has two adult children and several grandchildren.

Michael executed a “simple” will a few years ago, appointing his two children as his executors and leaving the whole of his estate to both of them equally.

Michael is concerned that given the potential size of his estate, having a “simple” will may not be suitable and he seeks legal advice regarding his estate planning.

His solicitor suggests that Michael makes a new will that establishes testamentary trusts for the benefit of his children.

Testamentary trusts come in many different forms. One of the most popular types of wills of this nature are known as “bloodline trusts”. These wills can have substantial tax benefits because they allow for income splitting and in particular distributions to minors that are not subject to the usual tax-free threshold, which is currently just $416, and instead allows distributions to minors up to a current taxfree threshold of $18,200.

This means that the income generated from his children’s inheritance, can be shared amongst their family, resulting in substantial tax savings each year.

Bloodline trusts can also provide protection in the event of the breakdown of a child’s relationship with their partner and can also be useful in the event of bankruptcy.

Testamentary trusts can also include establishing “umbrella trusts”, “mothership trusts” or “flowering trusts”. Special disability trusts and charitable trusts can also be useful in certain situations.

Testamentary trusts are not for everyone and they need to be tailored to each individual’s particular circumstances and should only be prepared in conjunction with receiving the proper accounting and financial planning advice.

Civic Space raises eyebrows OPINION Dear News Of The Area, FIRSTLY thank you to all involved in getting this newspaper to print.

The ‘town cryer’ has been an integral institution and a vital element of our social fabric since time immemorial. It is a primary means of connecting the citizens of a community and at this point in history possibly more needed than ever.

For myself as for many others I am sure your editorial regarding the exclusion of the Gordon St. Civic and Cultural Space was an interesting inclusion in the ongoing

public debate regarding this facility. I have no doubt it raised a few eyebrows. Mine included even though I was aware of the omission.

It would be fair to assume that this omission sends a very clear message to the CHCC that this development is not viewed by the NSW Dept of Planning as the ground breaking development we have been led to believe.

Add to this the public opposition through 15,000 signatures on the petition raised by the Citizens Voice group, which is by no means an insignificant number by any measure, and the near 750 submissions out of 785 opposing the development, you would think CHCC had cause for pause and reassessment.

On top of this we have had a very public stoush between our local member Gurmesh Singh and the Mayor with the Minister of local Government weighing into the foray in support of Mr. Singh. Mr Singh has every right as our local MP to reflect the feelings of the community which he represents.

Further to all of this no offers that we have been informed of have been received by council for any of the properties which they need to sell to underpin the financing of the project. leaving a 30% shortfall in funds.

I recently gave a friend some clothes and shoes that no longer fit my children. A few days later I saw the same clothes posted for sale on a social media site. If she only took them to sell them, shouldn't I get the money?

Elizabeth R. Dear Elizabeth,

At face value, I can see your point. You have given the clothes to your friend out of the goodness of your heart, and you would expect that little Timmy would be happy to receive the Ninja Turtle singlet and Samantha would be thrilled with those faux leather boots, but alas they are now there for the world to see, along with a catchy sales pitch: 'Vintage singlet and vegan boots in great used condition' which is certainly not the description you would have given them.

The thing is, Elizabeth, there is actually zero monetary advantage in selling second-hand clothes to social media communities. I tell you, those people are savvier than any nanna at a Garage Sale. They are as cunning as Victor Lustig (Google him). As relentless as rodents. As tight as a fish's . . . you get the idea.

I discovered this the hard way when I tried to sell my seven-year-old son's soccer boots. They were in immaculate condition because, let's be honest, he spent half the season on the bench and even when on the field he wasn't too keen on getting his boots scuffed. They cost me $100, so I put them on the local marketplace site for $10, complete with photos from various angles and a detailed sizing chart with European conversions.

That probably took me about half an hour, so I was already on slave-labour rates. Well, then the queries started.

Would I accept $5? Ah, no. Would I drive the boots to the purchaser who lived half an hour away? Nope. Would I arrange for free postage (which would be more than the asking price)?

Negative. Would I take some more pictures including one of the shoe next to a ruler? Nein, du nerviger Dummkopf. Trying to sell that one pair of soccer boots became a full-time job. I had to take annual leave to keep up with the enquiries.

I never sold those boots, Elizabeth. They are still in the wardrobe. My son is now sixteen and playing rugby. His feet have grown another ten centimetres. The boots are still listed on the site, waiting patiently for someone to pay me a measly ten bucks so I can put it towards the therapy surrounding my lacklustre sales career.

So, the point is, let your friend try to sell those items. She will be burdened by the tactics of people who do this for a living. They grind you down until you end up offering to pay them just so they'll shut up and take the goods off your hands.

and general financial advisory assistance to New South Wales local councils which it deems “Fit for the Future, subject to credit criteria” has stated that it will not finance this Civic and Cultural Space as proposed.

If all of this is not sufficient to encourage CHCC to rethink their proposal I am not sure what is.

Under the above stated circumstances CHCC continues to spend money on this proposal at a rate of knots. Consultants fees management agencies architects and staff wages are being covered from the whatever pool of money is currently available in the city’s coffers with no guarantee these will be recovered if the project goes into freefall.

The money being spent

includes the cost of promoting the project via whatever avenue is available to Council be it well scripted videos on social media or a light weight and very incomplete look into the financials via a pamphlet written designed printed and included in local rates notices.

How hard can it be? There are very clear messages being sent to CHCC from all quarters here.

CHCC your community needs you to listen. To all of us the message is loud and clear. The project is not fit for purpose. We are still waiting for the “Cultural Space” that will enliven our ailing tourist industry and uplift our community.

Perhaps it is time to reflect.

New Gumbaynggirr school planned for Coffs

DURING the Stolen Generation, children who spoke Gumbaynggirr language and were immersed in the culture were most at risk of being removed from their families, according to members of the local Aboriginal community.

Even now, there is a view that some of the current generation of Aboriginal children feel alienated in

mainstream education because, while their culture and backgrounds might be acknowledged, they are not celebrated.

The experience of Clark Webb, the Executive Officer of the Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation, is that “Sometimes it is hard to articulate to people what it is about how the education system holds our kids back.”

educational success.”

To accelerate this goal, Clark and his colleagues are planning to create a school for local Aboriginal children to learn about their culture in Gumbaynggirr language.

Students will not only develop an understanding of their culture, but will be equipped with skills for success in HSC and beyond.

The planning group has met with officials at the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) to plan the curriculum and have had discussions with Linda Kennedy, Australia’s only female Aboriginal architect, about designing a

culturally-appropriate setting with significant outdoor learning spaces.

During school closures, Clark and his colleagues ran a pilot school with thirteen children for two or three days a week.

Morning sessions were about learning Gumbaynggirr language and afternoons were spent “on country” with the children learning about dance, stories, plant identification, mindfulness.

A three-day camp was held for the children to learn about land management and cultural burning in the Dorrodong Indigenous Protected Area, near Dorrigo.

It is hoped that the primary school will begin with approximately 30

children and eventually increase to over 100 students.

Clark intends to run a series of community workshops to hear the views of potential stakeholders.

Community support is very strong and there is already a push for a Gumbaynggirr-language secondary school.

Bishop Druitt College Northern Beaches campus now taking enrolments

BISHOP Druitt College (BDC) is set to open it’s new Northern Beaches campus next year with the college’s governing council approving the financial and educational models for the venture.

“The college council was extremely enthusiastic about approving the models. So now we can proceed to the next step of securing approvals from regulatory bodies,” said Principal Nick Johnstone.

“The Northern Beaches Campus will have a local village feel, including our signature Walker Learning experiences, have small class sizes and access to our BDC Coffs Harbour resources and specialists similar to the opportunities that our current Stage One and Stage Two students experience.”

The campus will be located at 1852-1856 Solitary Islands Way,

Woolgoolga, across the road from Woolworths and will eventually cater for Kindergarten to Year Four students.

Enrolments are now open for Kindergarten to Year Two for the 2021 school year and for Kindergarten to Year Four for 2022.

Missing teen, seventeen years ago

POLICE are appealing for information, as part of Missing Persons Week, to help locate a Bellingen teenager who went missing over 17 years ago.

Rose Howell, then aged 18, left her home in the Bellingen township of Repton on the afternoon of Friday 11 April 2003.

Her mother believed Rose had intended to meet friends in Bellingen, and it was not unusual for her to spend the night at one of her friends’ homes.

On Sunday 13 April 2003, Rose was reported missing to police after she failed to return home and meet her mother for an 11am appointment.

At the time of her disappearance, Rose was described as being of

Caucasian appearance, with an olive complexion, about 160-165cm tall, with hazel eyes and short, dark hair worn in a Mohawk.

Rose also had a condition in her right leg which caused her to walk with a slight limp.

During the investigation into her disappearance, police received reports that Rose was seen hitch-hiking on the southbound lanes of the Pacific Highway, near the Bundagen turn off, on Friday 11 April 2003.

In December 2012, a coronial inquest found that it was likely Ms Howell had died, but the date, place and cause of death was undetermined.

The NSW Police Force Missing Persons Registry Manager, Detective Inspector Glen Browne, said police

“You can avoid getting close to each other and if you wanted to you could use your own tennis balls to serve with to be extra cautious,” Baylis explained.

The weekend just gone should’ve seen the traditional Seaside Open played on Sawtell’s renowned clay courts but the current circumstances dictated it wasn’t meant to be.

Baylis said the Open has overcome a lot of obstacles in the past but coronavirus was one challenge that couldn’t be beaten.

"We’ve had rain and storms and all sorts of things but the tournament has always gone ahead for more than 40 years so it’s disappointing we couldn't play this year," he said.

"We’ll just have to wait until next year to get the Seaside Open running again."

Coffs United break through Sawtell defence

By David WIGLEY COFFS United were quick off the mark when Mabior was the first to react to a loose ball to open the scoring in the first minute.

Thereafter the game settled down where both teams passed the ball around nicely looking to unlock the defence.

Coffs United had more of the possession and chances but they couldn't penetrate a well organised and resolute Sawtell defence.

With 15 minutes to go, former professional footballer and Sawtell player/coach, Jody Jenkins came onto the pitch looking to break the deadlock.

Sawtell created several chances with shots that

glanced the wrong side of the post.

But it was Coffs United who had the final say when in the 89th minute Nick Mallett broke through the Sawtell back line and slotted home to settle the nerves on the Coffs bench and seal three points for the Lions.

In the post match interview the Coffs United skipper Aaren Allsop wasn't complacent with the victory and emphasised that the team need to get better in every department.

Saturday, 8th August is another local derby as the Lions host the Coffs Coast Tigers at 6pm at McLean Street and Sawtell host the Taree Wildcats at the Toormina Oval at 3pm.

Forty four riders entered over 10 divisions and the crowd was thoroughly entertained with a massive sixty races.

The future of the Club looks bright with 10 in the Sprockets Class hitting the track over two divisions.Billy Staines, Joseph Hay and Dakota Jackson having an outstanding night of racing.

Brock Conroy and Mase Feltrin had some fun as they raced in the Graduate Mini class.

It’s great to see these young riders coming through the ranks.

In the Junior class Kaidan Doust was the standout rider, with Trae Mitchell pushing hard all night.

The Junior Advanced group saw the ever-improving Frank Lane take the crown for the night closely followed by Jordan Jackson.

The Expert division always is a great spectacle with Tyler Calder and Cody Beattie always fighting tooth and nail for the lead and tonight they were joined by visiting Terrigal rider Kai Field.

The Pro division was dominated by Kyle Potter, who was pushed hard all night by Jarrod Hughes. This group never fails to supply the crowd with some fast racing and awesome skills.

The Masters were not to be outdone and put on their own show with Deni Rahman and Ben McDonald battling hard all night.

Showing that girls can ride just as well as the boys, Hannah Beattie and Dusty Owers had some tight racing, followed by Aria Corcoran.

THE AFL North Coast has been forced to change its fixture after the Northern Beaches withdrew its senior team from the league.

The 2020 season will now proceed as a four-team competition although the Blues will continue to field women’s and reserves teams.

Paul Taylor, Community Football Manager for the North Coast, said the Northern Beaches outfit is a victim of extenuating circumstances.

“They have three players who work in Western Australia and can’t get over here while there’s some more who had concerns about the shorter season and COVID-19 which resulted in a change of heart,” Mr Taylor said.

“But the club remains committed to having a senior team next year.”

The Mixed Foursomes Championship at Coffs Harbour Golf Club saw Beck Goldsmith and Shane Cutmore combine to win the event to win the event for the second year running.

But it nearly went to a playoff.

The winners completed their alternate shots round with 121 strokes.

Only one shot behind was Norma Andrews and Warrick Lynch.

In third place was the combination of Carrie Fagan and Chris Spencer.

“It was only that we parred the last nine holes that got us there,” Goldsmith said.

“It was lucky we did that or we wouldn’t have won.”

By David TUNE FOLLOWING approval of their COVID-19 Safety Plan by Hockey NSW and Coffs Harbour City Council, Hockey Coffs Coast has resumed competitions.

With over 500 members across six different clubs, Hockey Coffs Coast is a small but very effective organisation, running four senior divisions and three junior age group competitions.

Games are held from Friday

night through to Sunday each week, with the hockey fields buzzing with juniors on Saturdays.

Strict rules are in place to enforce the correct number of people is not exceeded during both training and competitions, with only one parent allowed per junior player and no spectators for the senior games.

Association President Joel Matthews said, “The impact of COVID-19 has been fairly slight, but we have taken it very seriously. We are a family oriented association

with a large base of volunteers, which has enabled us to tackle and get over any hurdle that we have encountered.”

As well as the local competitions, there is a combined women’s first grade team, the Coffs Crusaders, playing in the larger Grafton competition.

The association also has a number of senior and junior players competing in state teams.

Work is continuing on the new kiosk building which will also house an office and meeting room.

This is stage one of improving the on site facilities and is expected to be open around December.

Stage two of the improvements will add toilets and change rooms to the current facilities, and there are plans to put in a second turf playing field in the future.

Long term plans include bidding to host more state level competitions, including the open women’s state titles in 2022.

Olympic dream presently on hold for Lachie

this weekend.

A key member of Australia’s Rugby Sevens team, the 26 year-old admits that he’d love nothing more right now than to be in Tokyo having just played on

the world’s biggest sporting stage.

“It’s a bit disappointing to think that we would be there right now,” Miller said.

“But it’s also not the end of the world. So long as

we’re staying safe.”

The Australian team was rated as a strong medal chance as well.

“It will probably be a different format now with five or six tournaments next year leading up to the Olympics. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

Miller’s background included being a very talented rugby league junior with the Coffs Harbour Comets before playing first grade with the rival Sawtell Panthers.

A chance of being part of the Sevens program saw Miller play for a period in the local MNC Rugby competition with the SCU Marlins.

His grand final winning penalty goal three years ago is a part of local rugby folklore.

Now Miller is keeping fit training with national squad members as well as plying his trade in the 15-man game playing at fullback for Randwick in the Shute Shield.

“I was going to come home but the Shute Shield started,” he said.

“I haven’t been home in a little while to see Mum and Dad. When we get a bye I’ll probably come home then if it’s allowed.”

Woopi Nippers receive funding boost

By Emma DARBIN WOOLGOOLGA Junior Nippers has received a funding boost of $5,000 to purchase a new trailer to transport boards used for training and competitions.

Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan recently announced the funding for Woolgoolga Surf Life Saving Club and said the new board trailer will allow the club to maintain the supply of boards required at competitions.

“Our local nippers train for swimming, boards, beach sprint, beach flags and junior ironman and ironwoman,” Mr Hogan said.

“We have had quite a few successful children represent our area at Branch, Country and State levels.”

Woolgoolga Junior Nippers is run by volunteers and parents and relies on fundraising money to purchase boards, flags and equipment.
