ALMOST a dozen local community Groups will be receiving upgrades and new facilities thanks to the latest round of funding from Coffs Harbour City Council.

A total of 11 community groups from across the region will be receiving a share of $258,816 in the latest round of Council’s Community Capital Infrastructure Grants (CCIG) Program, which is specifically targeted at helping to create or develop new facilities to enhance local sport, education and social wellbeing.

“These grants always show what a lively, engaged community we are,” Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Denise Knight said.

The successful groups are a diverse range of grassroots community organisations and include Woolgoolga Lake Working Group Inc, which has received $85,820 to assist with planned upgrades of the Woolgoolga Lake Reserve to improve water access, walkways and stabilisation of the foreshore areas from erosion.

Red Rock Multi-Use Centre was awarded an $11,000 grant for renovations to the existing building.

The Sawtell and District Soccer Club plans to renovate the exterior of the change rooms at Toormina Oval which is part of a major enhancement of the amenity block to provide new female friendly change rooms and facilities for players with disabilities. The Club

received a $20,067 grant in this round.

The Aspect MacArthur School in Coffs Harbour provides high needs autism specific education, but its kitchen was in need of renovation. Under the CCIG Program, Council has provided $12,045 to assist a project that will accommodate food technology and cooking classes for students, as well as improve overall safety.

“I’m always blown away by how much is going on at a grassroots level to improve our whole way of life,” Mayor Knight said.

“The members of these groups who put so much work and commitment into achieving better facilities deserve an enormous round of applause. They’re all amazing.”

COFFS Harbour City Council has questioned the lack of references to cultural and community facilities in the State Government’s Draft Regional City Action Plan (RCAP) for Coffs Harbour.

The Coffs Harbour Draft RCAP has significantly changed from the version Council sited in late 2019, with the removal of references to the Cultural and Civic Space project and the importance of the city centre as the cultural, civic and entertainment heart of the city.

“This is unexpected as it is at odds with numerous NSW Government policy documents that identify culture and cultural facilities as of being significant

economic, educational and social wellbeing drivers,” said Council’s Acting Director Sustainable Communities Ian Fitzgibbon.

Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Denise Knight said overall the Draft Plan was a very good plan and aligned well with many of Council’s own strategies and aspirations in growing the city as an economic centre that supports strong local employment while providing an attractive coastal lifestyle.

“But one glaring omission is the lack of reference to culture and cultural facilities in the city centre, which is very surprising,” Cr Knight said.

Council has made a submission to the NSW Government on the Draft

The NSW Government’s Draft Coffs Harbour Regional City Action Plan 2036 is open for public consultation until Friday, 31 July on the NSW Planning Portal at www.planningportal.nsw.gov. au/coffsharbourrcap, and Council encourages residents to put forward their own views on the plan.

Council circus Business, almost, as over whose name usual for schools written first

By Emma DARBIN COFFS Harbour City Council’s latest meeting on Thursday, 23 July turned into a farcical circus with two councillors arguing for around 30 minutes over whose name would be written first on a motion to join a NSW Government steering committee.

Cr Paul Amos and Cr George Cecato both believed they were the most appropriate councillor to be placed on the NSW Government’s Jetty Foreshore Precinct Project Steering Advisory Committee, and both wanted their name placed first on a Council motion about the committee, in case the NSW Government decided to only allow one councillor on the steering committee.

Both councillors spent the majority of the Council meeting stating their case about why they were the best councillor to join the committee, and

spoke about their history with the Jetty Foreshore Precinct area.

After half an hour of deliberation, Council eventually voted to list both councillors names in equality with each other, and Council agreed to correspond with Government Property NSW to seek its concurrence to appointing two councillors to the committee.

The purpose of the committee is to assist the NSW Government to develop a concept plan for the Jetty Foreshore Precinct that will be supported by the community.

The State Government will now decide whether to accept one or two councillors as representatives on the committee.

Final decisions on the concept plan for the area will rest with the NSW Government.

SCHOOLS have been very much in the news since the beginning of the pandemic and local schools and teachers have been working hard, and smart, to keep their students learning.

As schools closed, teachers were forced to rethink the way classes were delivered.

At Woolgoolga High School and Sawtell Public School, teachers and students were already using a range of online learning resources, but, as schools closed, according to Woogoolga High School Relieving Principal, Lu Nickell, “Teachers had extra work because they had to change their planning and develop new learning resources”.

Both Lu and Michael Hepi, Principal of Sawtell Public School, felt that a positive outcome from school closures was the way teachers worked together to offer a variety of learning activities such as video lessons, video challenges and home science experiments.

Some families needed support with online learning,

so Woolgoolga High School loaned laptops to many families and sent packages of classwork to others, while Sawtell Public School kept in regular communication with families to ensure their wellbeing.

social aspect of face-to-face interactions, particularly younger primary school students.

Now that students are back at school it is almost business as usual in classes.

Thanks to the efforts of teachers, students maintained continuity with their learning,

with literacy and numeracy being a focus at junior primary level.

However, restrictions on visitors result in guest speakers, P&C nights, fundraising events, excursions, graduations, formals and other events not happening.

Michael Hepi summed up the feelings of principals across the Coffs Coast when he said, “I couldn’t be more proud of our students, teachers and families for their resilience and adaptability.”

Students at a number of schools were already learning online.

it may be possible to stage the event in some form. Everyone knows when the Festival is on and the format.”

“The kids Day-City centre, Adult Comedy as well as the weekend markets, which all could be launched at short notice but that is now looking less likely with each passing day,” Mr Logan said.

This iconic Festival features many International and Australian acts, travelling from afar, and crossing borders to perform. The acts take place in many venues over six to seven days so requiring quite a complex set of arrangements.

Mr Logan told News Of The Area, “The dates were September 29th-October 4th but now the only option would be to put it back until the last weekend in November, being the 26th and 29th.”

After speaking to stakeholders Mr Logan said, “They all would like to see this event still happen.They promise they won’t give up easily, but the decision will need to be made very soon.”

Mr Logan said, “We are lucky that this Festival has widespread community support as well as the organisers all having important knowledge about this event.”

Mr Logan told News of The Area, “We could make it still happen.” He suggests watching Facebook for announcements.

Jobseeker and Keeper cuts hit Coffs Coast

By Sandra MOON THE St Vincent de Paul Society’s National Council has welcomed the extension of JobSeeker and JobKeeper programs but warned that the principles of equity and fairness must not be put to one side in the

face of this economic crisis.

Existing arrangements for JobKeeper and JobSeeker will remain in place until the end of September after which time JobKeeper will be extended to March 2021 and JobSeeker will be extended to December 2020.

National Council CEO, Toby O'Connor acknowledged the valuable assistance but questioned the different timeframes for the extension of both payments, and the reintroduction of mutual obligation requirements.

“At the end of the day, COVID affects everyone and

both those payments should be in place till the end of March.”

“It’s not clear why the JobSeeker arrangements have only been extended to December this year.”

Pete’s Place, a Vinnies support service for the homeless in Coffs Harbour, is seeing many new faces due to the impacts of COVID-19, including families, casual workers and people stuck due to travel restrictions and is helping up to 90 people each week day, offering food, showers, laundry and other support.

The message from Les Pepper, Duty Officer North Coast Branch of Surf Life Saving is clear: be shark smart and swim between the flags at patrolled beaches only.

“Sharks are getting more and more prevalent.”

“We hadn’t heard of a great white in the Coffs Harbour area 10 years ago

and white pointers are very aggressive,” Les said.

“We had shark alarms twice in the last season.”

“Prior to that the last time I remember a shark alarm was probably 30 years ago.”

Les told Coffs Coast News of The Area, “This upcoming season we really want to promote that people swim on a patrolled beach and swim in the flags.”

“Unpatrolled beaches are often some distance away and takes us time to get there. In that time, you could suffer a tragedy,” Les said.

The Surf Life Savers’ season starts at the beginning of the September holidays and covers every weekend and public holiday including Christmas right up until the end of the season after the Anzac Day long weekend.

Mask up to Coffs University sticks visit hospital to Click and Collect

ALL visitors to Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Mid North Coast Health Community Health facilities must now wear a mask, in line with recent NSW Health advice.

Visitors are encouraged to wear their own mask, or if they don’t have one staff will provide them with one.

Patient visitor numbers at the hospital have also been restricted, with only one visitor allowed per patient per day.

These measures have been introduced by Mid North Coast Health to protect the local community from the spread of COVID-19 in the local area.

Entries open for Coffs Coast Art Prize 2020

By Emma DARBIN ENTRIES are now open for the Coffs Coast Art Prize 2020.

Up for grabs for winning artists is $2000 for the Major Award, $750 for the Sculpture Award, $300 for the Youth Award, and $750 for the People's Choice Award.

Entry forms are available by email to coffsharbourartscouncil@ gmail.com, and entries will remain open until Tuesday, 1 September.

The exhibition opening and presentation of awards will be held on Saturday, 18 September on Level 2, Coffs Central.

SOUTHERN Cross University Coffs Harbour Education Campus Library remains open as classes continue to operate online through to next year.

The library has reduced capacity, strict health and safety measures in place and a Click and Collect service.

A collaborative library space has helped staff to adapt to the changes due to COVID-19 according to Robbie McFarlane, Library Manager at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus.

“As well as Southern Cross University students, we have TAFE students and Senior College High School students.”

“The library has staff from all three sectors, and we work together to provide the best service to all of our students,” Mr McFarlane said.

“The students have adapted well themselves to the expectations in the library and are more than happy to work with us and use the space safely.” ”We’ve re-arranged furniture and provided

signage to facilitate social distancing and of course there’s plenty of hand sanitiser and wipes to clean workspaces.”

Mr McFarlane told Coffs Coast News Of The Area, “We’re in this together, and so we all need to work together.

That’s something we do well here in Coffs.”

Classes however for this term and Session 3, running from October to February, will remain online.

Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said the decisions reflect the ongoing COVID-19 situation in Victoria and concerning spikes in New South Wales that have developed recently.

Curryfest another COVID-19 casualty

The event was due to be held on Saturday, 26 September, 2020. q

The various gyms in the area are very well patronised, so that, when they were amongst the majority of businesses that were forced to close because of COVID-19, many people had to make choices about the amount of exercise they would do.

Local gyms had to become entrepreneurial to support their members during the

challenges of COVID-19.

Equipment was rented to members and activities and classes went online.

A few people gave up exercise altogether and some did not exercise until they returned to the gym, but many kept up their fitness during lockdown.

Duncan Marchant, owner of the Coffs Coast Health Club said, “We surveyed our members and found that 75% continued to exercise on their own”.

Tony Farrell, owner of Beachbodies Health Club felt that, although many members had continued to swim, walk, jog and/or cycle, not

all had maintained their preCOVID-19 fitness levels Both the Coffs Coast Health Club and Beachbodies Health Club report that 80% of their members have since returned.

So, even though gyms have reopened, with very stringent hygiene procedures, some people are still deterred, particularly those concerned about their immunity to disease, or that of close family.

According to Tony Farrell, others who may not yet have returned to the gym include small groups of people, particularly men, who enjoy training together.

Because of physical

distancing, some of these groups have moved to other locations to maintain the social aspects of exercise.

Gym owners, like many small business owners, are apprehensive about another lockdown.

Most suffered significant income drops because membership during lockdown was optional and some members, themselves, are struggling financially and/or have health issues.

Both Duncan and Tony remain optimistic about the resilience of the industry.

Even though gyms are in friendly competition for members, Tony observed that the only way for most to survive is “Don’t jump in anyone else’s lane - just keep swimming”.

Koalas to help bring tourists and jobs

If you like the thought of strolling around informative displays, watching videos and checking out koala merchandise, why not head over to the Great Koala National Park Information and Visitors Centre.

The fresh, refurbished building is on the site of the old Urunga Visitors Centre, cnr Giinagay Way and Bellingen Street.

The proposed Great Koala National Park would add State forests to existing protected areas to form a 315,000 ha reserve and provide security for the local koala population.

Economic benefits

are expected to flow from a range of nature-based activities which would bring tourists and jobs to the area.

Kevin Evans, representative of the Great Koala National Park Steering Committee, told News Of The Area, “We now have the opportunity to compete with Tasmania in providing iconic tourism experiences such as horse riding trails and bike tracks, and multi-day bushwalking hikes.”

“These activities can take place without damaging the environment.”

“The GKNP will eventually happen and it will be the jewel in the crown for nature based tourism on the mid north coast,” he said.

“However, for this to

occur it will take local political support and State government leadership.”

“It’s up to all of us to encourage our elected members to think big and support the future economies on this mid north coast.”

Kevin said, “Unfortunately the COVID pandemic has put back our planned launch activities.”

“But if you want to support the GKNP we’re also looking for more volunteers for the Visitor Centre.”

Council refused by-election

COFFS Harbour City Council is unable to hold a by-election this year to fill the current vacancy in the Council.

The Minister for Local Government recently published an order postponing the next ordinary local government elections,

set down for 12 September, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The making of this order also suspends the election requirements, including the requirement to hold by-elections to fill Council vacancies.

A vacancy was left within Council following the departure of Cr Jan Strom.

This vacancy has become an issue in Council with problems arising from tied votes at ensuing Council meetings.

Current councillors will continue to hold their offices until the rescheduled ordinary local government elections are held on 4 September, 2021.

COFFS Harbour and District Eisteddfod Society (CHDES) is going ahead with it’s plans for this years Eisteddfod.

CHDES President David Metcalf said, “The Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod is the longest continuous running arts and cultural event in the region.”

This year marks the fortyeighth year for the society, and Mr. Metcalf said, “Plans are in place for a major event for our fiftieth year in 2022.”

As a result of current restrictions, audience numbers will be limited and the Society will only be running competitions for solo

and duo vocalists.

Past Coffs Harbour eisteddfods have featured multiple sections including the very popular Dance section, Instrumental and Piano sections as well as Speech and Drama and School Choirs.

The Vocal section will commence on Monday 17 August and run through to Thursday 20 August at the Jetty Memorial Theatre.

Mr. Metcalf also told News Of The Area, “We are talking with Jetty Theatre management about keeping the current cardboard audience in place to facilitate social distancing and to give the performers a sense of

having a full house to perform to.”

Entries for the Vocal section have now closed, with the Society receiving applications from 70 performers who will present 250 items over the four day competition.

Mr. Metcalf did advise that should restrictions be increased further it is possible that the Eisteddfod may not go ahead.

This virus is here in our State and its ability to travel through populations is incredible. We can’t let our guard slip even though we live on the Mid North Coast.

The very best defence is to follow all the hygiene and social gathering rules set out by the NSW Government.

I’ve noticed that local shops and cafes are being very, very sensible about the numbers of people allowed into a premises, the need for contact tracing details to be provided and the need to sanitise.

Please remember to hand-wash or sanitise regularly. And please pay attention to the rules the NSW Government health experts are asking us all to follow. They can change, so please try and stay up-todate. However, he has labelled Council’s obsession with the Cultural and Civic Centre project as “short-sighted”.

“Council’s obsession with its Gordon St project is short-sighted and tone-deaf in the current economic climate,” Mr Singh stressed.

“Arts and culture in Coffs Harbour is about far more than just a deeply unpopular and expensive building comprising more than 50% council administration.”

Council has refuted Mr Singh’s claim that the Cultural and Civic Space project comprises more than 50% Council administration, and stated that the Council administration component of the Cultural and Civic Space was less than 30%.

Mr Singh said he had received feedback from local residents about the lack of focus on arts and culture within the Draft Plan.

“While arts and culture are certainly mentioned multiple times throughout the document, I do agree that arts and culture should have a separate sub-section similar to Sport,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh urged Coffs Harbour residents to read the Draft Coffs Harbour Regional City Action Plan at www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/ coffsharbourrcap and provide their feedback by Friday, 31 July.

Theatre couple plan unusual productions

By David TUNE LOCAL community theatre identities Maureen Burgess and Marty Elliott haven’t been able to grace the stage recently, but in true fashion are planning to create some unique productions themselves.

At the end of October

they will be tying the knot and getting married, with plans for a socially distanced cake cutting and big bash, by invitation only of course.

On top of this production they are embarking on an exciting new business venture together, creating a new food experience in Coffs Harbour.

They plan to open a plant based kitchen and

NAIDOC Week Grants re-open

By Sandra MOON LOCAL groups and organisations are encouraged to apply for the Local Grants Round leading up to the 2020 National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) being held November 8 to 15.

Both NAIDOC Week and the local grants were postponed due to COVID-19 to protect our elders and those in our communities with chronic health issues.

The Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, invites local organisations to plan how they will celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence, traditions, cultures and histories and apply for funding to make these events great experiences for the community.

“All Australians are excited to start planning

and attending in-person and virtual events in a COVID safe way and NAIDOC Week will be an opportunity to celebrate our resilience,” Minister Wyatt said.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are among the oldest in the world and these grants will help people share in that history and look to the future.

This year’s theme, Always Was, Always Will Be, represents strength, respect and a continuing journey towards truth and reconciliation.”

Information on the 2020 NAIDOC local grants round is available on the National Indigenous Australians Agency website, with applications closing 17 August at 7pm (AEST).

Another way to get involved is by becoming a member of the National NAIDOC Committee for the

period of September 2020 – August 2023.

Expressions of interest are being taken and the committee currently meets virtually.

The National NAIDOC Committee (NNC) makes key decisions on National NAIDOC activities each year including the focus city, theme, National NAIDOC Poster Competition winner and National NAIDOC award recipients, as well as supporting the promotion and success of NAIDOC Week nationally.

The position requires substantial commitment, including willingness to travel to attend meetings on weekends, and taking on projects out of session to help drive the NNC’s NAIDOC agenda.

Youth input on West Woolgoolga Sports Complex School students from Woolgoolga High School and Woolgoolga Public School recently joined forces to have their say on the new West Woolgoolga Sports Complex

By Emma DARBIN SCHOOL students from Woolgoolga High School and Woolgoolga Public School recently joined forces to have their say on the new West Woolgoolga Sports Complex (WWSC).

The Woolgoolga High School student representatives and Woolgoolga Public School captains met to discuss their wants and needs for the new complex, as part of the West Woolgoolga Sports Complex planning and design phase.

Students discussed outdoor space use for the complex at the recent

meeting, and ideas suggested included an outdoor stage, astro turf multi-purpose recreational outdoor area, climbing walls, study zones and art spaces.

Woolgoolga High School Year 10 SRC representative Ally Cork said the new sports complex will be great for the high school and the wider Woolgoolga community.

“We are so excited to have the opportunity to have input into the design of such an amazing facility,” Ally said.

The students ideas will be forwarded to the Design Team working on the West Woolgoolga Sports Complex for incorporation into the complex’s planning and design.

Area, “In India I was so impressed by the talent, dedication and enthusiasm that I saw in my students that I started an internship program and brought four young performers to Australia for six months to experience the industry here.”

After moving to the Coffs Harbour area she began teaching dance at Woolgoolga Dance Studio, and starred in the lead role as the witch Elphaba in the local community theatre production of ‘Wicked’ in May 2017.

In 2018 she started her own business, Naidu Performing Arts Company and began teaching dance, acting and theatre for juniors and teens in Woolgoolga and Coramba.

Jade graduated from NIDA (National Institute for Dramatic Arts) in 2018, and in January 2019 became the owner of Woolgoolga Dance Studio, expanding it to deliver performing arts training including musical theatre for all ages under the new name of Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio.

THE first works have begun on Len Towells Oval at Nana Glen.

It’s going to be an exciting 12 months for the Orara Valley community as the long awaited cricket pitch upgrade, playground and amenities projects come to fruition.

Last week, earthworks started on the oval to install a second cricket pitch.

The Orara Valley Progress Association will be working closely with Coffs Harbour City Council to finalise the design for the community playground, landscaping, shade trees, car park and connecting pathways.

While no date has been set for completion of the works, Section Leader Asset Strategies at Coffs Harbour City Council, Rebecca Doblo, said the projects can be expected over the coming financial year.

“It’s a lovely project and the community is so switched on and positive about it, it’s great to see,” she said.

The Orara Valley Progress Association worked hard to secure $205,000 in Federal Government funding for the playground.

An additional $400,000 from developer contributions will be spent mostly on public amenities and storage for the Nana Glen Cricket Club.

State injection boosts TAFE Allied Health Hub ON the 22nd July the Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education,, Geoff Lee, opened a state funded $3.2 million Allied Health Hub at TAFE NSW Coffs Harbour Education Campus.

The focus of the NSW Government investment is to meet the current and future needs of local communities and is expanding the capacity of TAFE NSW to deliver health training to meet growing demand for skilled workers, including in key areas of demand such as Dental Technology, Aboriginal Health, and Aged Care.

Mr Lee said that the NSW Government is investing in new facilities so students can access the quality training TAFE NSW is known for.

“While studying for my HSC, I worked in restaurants and cafes in a variety of roles but had the burning ambition to be of service to, and an advocate for, people with disabilities.

I knew I needed practical skills and experience to be employed in the sector, so I studied Disability Services online with TAFE Digital.”

Studying online suited Mr. Rees regarding his disability and being able to be self-paced.

Then he gained employment at his workplace provider, Northcott Disability Services, in a casual support role.

“In the workplace there has been some reasonable adjustment and the need to get doctors reports to push chairs and such.”

“I’m lucky enough to be part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme myself so I can relate back to people and put myself in their shoes.”

“I can realise what they are thinking and needing and have more of a personal insight,” Mr Rees said.

Northcott Disability Services Program Coordinator, Julie Pell, said, “Just coming to work is often challenging for someone living with a disability.”

“I have a great deal of respect for the way Matthew is able to harness his experiences and take responsibility for clients with higher needs, with a depth of insight many people can’t possibly understand.”

Unexpected Coronavirus impacts

By David TUNE MANY of the major impacts of the current pandemic are obvious to all; restrictions, shortages, job losses, businesses closing, economic chaos etcetera, but there are other impacts that aren’t so clear to everyone.

The impact on school children has been well documented, with online learning and homeschooling taking place for months, much to the frustration of many parents and children.

students who are attending campuses interstate.

Many Coffs Coast kids finish high school and embark on a major life adventure studying at interstate Universities, often in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Boambee student Lizzy Tune finished her HSC in 2018, worked in a local pharmacy for a year and then commenced University at Griffith in February this year, living on campus.

In mid-March the University moved lectures to online delivery only, meaning Lizzy and her fellow students were sitting in their small

rooms all day watching online lectures and tutorials.

As a result she decided to move back home to Coffs Harbour where she could continue her studies online but with more support and comfort, and has been home ever since.

Lizzy told News Of The Area, “Not being in the same room as the lecturer creates a sense of disconnection, and has made studying very challenging.”

This is a common story, with many university students from the area returning home and studying distantly, Lizzy said “At least seven of my HSC class are in the same situation.”

It has been challenging and difficult for them, but the upside is that they have been here to help support the local economy, especially since the relaxation on numbers at food and beverage businesses.

Let’s face it, university students love to party.

Since the first announcement of social distancing measures due to

COVID-19, there has been a huge increase in demand for mountain bikes locally.

The exponential increase in demand, coupled with a supply shortage caused by the disruption in production and delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has q

seen bike dealers like Scott Bocking at Woodsey’s Wheels in Woolgoolga doing everything they can to keep up.

Scott has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, including 13 years in wholesale and said he has

never seen demand like there is currently.

“I have friends all over Australia in all aspects of the industry and it’s not just one pocket - it’s the biggest national boom in cycling we’ve ever seen,” Scott said.

“It’s been like the perfect storm for mountain biking,” he said.

“Everyone got told to go inside; the gyms were closed, soccer was off, all group activities came to a stand still - people were back to selfpropelled basics like walking,

running or biking and biking just exploded.”

It’s great news for the sport and for local riders. As Scott explains, “they’re such low-impact vehicles. The more wheels on tracks, the better groomed they are and the better maintained.”

“It’s been so great seeing whole families get out together and reignite their love for biking. People have had time to take a breath and they’re starting to realise riding wasn’t fun because you’re a kid, it’s fun because

it’s fun.”

In terms of supply and demand, with restrictions easing and production beginning again, local bike stores should have a steady flow of bikes back in store by late August.

“Right now, they’re rationing allocations of bikes and just sending them to us,” Scott said.

“We’ve been muddling through with what we have but we’re sure by September through to Christmas should be good.”

A community is complete when we have a local newspaper telling local stories.

Breakers come crashing down

By Brad GREENSHIELDS REIGNING AFL North Coast premier the Coffs Breakers couldn’t have started their title defence in a worse manner.

The Breakers fell to a second straight loss on Saturday, losing the local derby against a determined Sawtell/Toormina.

Played in wet and slippery conditions, the Saints earned a small but decisive lead early and held on to it for the remainder to win 8.5 (53) to 6.5 (41).

While the Breakers are yet to get a win in 2020, Sawtell/Toormina is undefeated after two rounds and club president Matt Flynn said it’s younger players like Tyler Donovan and Angus Anderson driving the success.

“It’s come down to the young fellas,” Flynn said.

“Our under-17 juniors who aren’t juniors anymore have just given the club so much energy at training and on game days.

“It’s been like that for the first two games and it’s their

hardness aw well, things like their tackling and desire to get their head over the hard ball when others might not.

And it’s shown in the results.”

The Northern Beaches Blues made their senior debut facing northern neighbour Grafton.

The Tigers continued their impressive start to the season with a convincing victory.

Only inaccurate kicking in front of goal stopped Grafton from recording a greater win, the final score reading 10.26 (86) to 2.2 (14).

In the women’s competition, the Breakers started their season well defeating Sawtell/Toormina 5.6 (36) to 0.2 (2).

Tomorrow sees the Breakers play an away game against the Blues. It will be the first senior men’s match a Woolgoolga team has played at Centennial Oval since the original Blues went into recess after the 2005 season.

Sawtell/Toormina has a bye while Grafton faces the long road trip to Port Macquarie.

THURSDAY’S Coffs Harbour Gold Cup will see the big race day tradition continue but in this strange year, it will be slightly different.

The half-day public holiday is gone and the large throng of people that head trackside for Coffs Harbour’s most popular race day of the year will be diminished.

Coffs Harbour Racing Club’s Racing and Club Manager Tim Saladine pointed out though that even with social distancing, a healthy sized crowd can still be in attendance.

“If we ticket the whole event, we can fit 600 in if we social distance,” he said.

“I’m pretty confident we can have 300 inside just because it’s such a big venue.

“Most of that crowd will be members and connections who will get priority.”

While the field for the $150,000 race won’t be finalised until Tuesday, there are some hints about who the main chances might be.

Coffs Harbour’s racing carnival usually starts with the Sawtell Cup. Unfortunately the track received 100mm of rain on the weekend forcing the meeting to be abandoned.

“We’re going to try to run it (the Sawtell Cup) again in December,” Saladine said.

“Just to keep the record books ticking over.”

Peter Wade sculpture exhibition

By Monka KOZLOVSKIS SCULPTOR and artist Peter Wade has lived in Coffs Harbour for over thirty years, creating works in his distinctively quirky and humorous style.

After growing up in Sydney and travelling the country he eventually settled in Coffs Harbour, soon finding himself turning his drawings into 3D works.

Peter’s latest exhibition is on display at Open Studio until the end of August, and features a mix of new work with some favourite older pieces. q Peter Wade and Troll at Open Studio.

Ash Johnston of Open Studio told News Of The Area on opening night, “Because of COVID restrictions it’s the first exhibition we’ve held in six months.”

“People are wary about handling flyers, which may have an impact on visitor numbers, although we’re following all the requirements around social distancing,” he said.

It didn’t keep away the steady stream of visitors moving through the edgy exhibition space on opening night.

The starkness of the black studio walls highlights the playfulness of Peter’s works.

“It’s an interesting space that allows for and encourages more looseness and freedom,” Peter Wade said.

“The Troll sculpture was a response to the way the world might go.”

“I regularly switch back and forth between optimism and pessimism as to where humankind is heading,” Peter said.

Mr Wade said, “We are capable of great things, for instance the art of Leonardo Da Vinci, as depicted on Troll.”

“But maybe we are just trolls after all, and it’s possible things won’t end well.”

Mr Wade said, “Also, Troll dolls were huge when I was young.”

“I don’t think people should take my work too seriously.”

Peter Wade: An exhibition of Old & New works is on display at Ash Johnston’s Open Studio at 2/25 Vernon Street, Wednesdays to Fridays from 10.00am to 5pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 12pm.

New Writers’ Centre coming soon

By Sandra MOON THE Mid North Coast Writers’ Centre will soon be open for membership and interested writers are encouraged to complete their survey.

The Mid North Coast Writers’ Centre will be a place of community, bringing writers and writing groups together, and building a strong culture of writers on the Mid North Coast.

The Centre is an online entity that enables a mobile service, which means workshops will be offered in several locations throughout the year, making it more accessible to more writers.

The centre serves as a hub, a community, and offers workshops, courses, resources, events, and networking opportunities for our membership.

President Wendy Haynes told News of The Area, “Our vision is to encourage, engage and enlighten writers on the Mid North Coast and beyond.”

Storm lose cool and match

By Brad GREENSHIELDS THE Northern Storm bemoaned a vital lapse in concentration during its loss to Port United in the Coastal Premier League.

Trailing by a goal at the break, the Storm showed for long periods on Saturday it was able to match it stride for stride with last year’s MNC title holders.

But 10 minutes after the break Port doubled the lead and the Storm only had themselves to blame.

A less than legal throwin from Port United started a quick chain of events that quickly led to the ball being in the back of the net.

“The trouble was we had senior players who

reacted to the ref’s decision rather than playing to the whistle,” Storm co-coach Eric McCarthy said.

McCarthy added though that Port United deserved the three points as he thought “they were hungrier than we were”.

Saturday proved a good day for the Port Macquarie teams with the Saints moving into second spot on the table with a 4-0 win over Sawtell.

BMX track upgrade rolling WORK will begin shortly on an upgrade of the Toormina BMX Track so it can improve the club’s prospects of attracting state and national titles.

A larger start hill as well as other track improvements at the Hulberts Road complex will be the final steps in creating an elite level venue after new lighting was installed last year.

Coffs Harbour City Council, in partnership with the Coffs Coast ‘Cyclones’ BMX Club, won a $506,504 grant from the Stronger Country Communities Fund provided by the State Government.

upgrade meets the needs of the state and national bodies.

“A key goal of the upgrades was to improve the prospects of attracting state and national titles to the region, but we found that the Club’s design was not consistent with BMX Australia’s requirements for such events and more investment was needed,” Council’s Director Sustainable Infrastructure Mick Raby said.

The project cost is cheaper thanks to the club securing the structural design services for the starting ramp structure from engineering consultants on a pro bono basis. It’s also been offered discounted in-kind rates from various suppliers for materials to be used.

Hypothetical: $300,000 De Facto Claim After separating from his wife, Peter commences a relationship with Mary in 2006. Mary has few assets and is 25 years his junior. They keep their finances separate.

Peter pays the rent and they share the other expenses. Mary undertakes all of the household cleaning and cooking.

Mary has a poor relationship with Peter’s three children from his previous relationship.

After Peter’s property settlement with his ex-wife is finalised, he purchases a property for $700,000 and Mary and her children move-in with him.

In 2016, Peter and Mary enter into a Binding Financial Agreement under the Family Law Act, which is similar to a prenuptial agreement, to the effect that if their relationship breaks-down, Mary receives the sum of $200,000.

In 2018, Peter makes a will only granting Mary the right to reside in his home for four months after his death and leaves the whole of his estate to his three children.

When Peter passes-away in 2019, Mary receives legal advice that the Binding Financial Agreement is no longer valid. This is correct. A Binding Financial Agreement only dictates the division of property in the event of a relationship breakdown and has no legal effect upon the death of either party.

Mary commences action in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, making a family provision claim for provision out of Peter’s estate. She commences proceedings within the limitation period, being 12 months from Peter’s date of death.

Mary and Peter’s children are unable to reach an agreement at mediation and after a hearing, costing a total of $150,000, payable from Peter’s estate, Mary is awarded $300,000, being roughly one quarter of the value of Peter’s estate.

Cultural and Civic Space Dear News Of The Area,

CITIZENS’ Voice have lodged a submission to NSW Department of Planning reaffirming omission of the proposed Cultural and Civic Space (CCS) infrastructure from the Draft Regional City Action Plan 2036.

The submission argued: An Art and Culture strategy should be included in the 2036 Plan, but not bound to one deeply unpopular and highly controversial building, the goal of which appears as an expensive infrastructure project, rather than a genuine commitment to the arts.

Community have consistently called for, and been denied, consideration of a space constructed independent of council facilities.

The CCS building would put onto the market an immediate glut of additional high-

cost office space in the CBD, burdening an already oversupplied vacancy rate and undermining current stock. Depressed real estate values evidenced by Council's inability to sell existing properties on the open market with a national agent.

The long term financial burden of this infrastructure, inclusion of Council Administration space, and contempt by CHCC for community who have fought vehemently against this project has caused irreparable social damage. The result is a significant loss of confidence in CHCC to respectfully represent their community wishes, and a consistent failure to address their needs and concerns.

Dear Jasminda, I saw some footage today of a woman who refused to wear a face mask in Bunnings because it was taking away her freedom to choose. As a parent of a child with an autoimmune disease, I just don't understand.

Mrs June P. Dear June, I will confess that I went on a search after your conundrum to see if I could find the offending footage and I quickly came across the video of this woman ranting at the poor Bunnings staff. I mean don't they have enough to deal with with customers who can't remember the shade of white they want to paint their coffee table or who can't find their husband because he said he was going to aisle 37 and he's not there, without having to deal with some middleclass legal studies dropout pain-in-the-neck with a patronising chai-latte-laced-withProzac tone who suggests she can have the poor Bunnings staff member 'personally sued' for merely trying to follow their Covidsafe protocol?

Personally sued? Is this woman insane? Actually, I think therein lies the answer. The coronavirus has unearthed a whole lot of people who have way too much time on their hands and who spend countless hours falling down conspiracy theory rabbit holes only to climb out and start ranting at service and healthcare workers who are just trying to do their job.

Seriously, how is wearing a mask a breach of human rights? We are not being asked to shrink wrap our bodies. We are not being asked to wear a full suit of armour. And we most certainly aren't being asked to spend hours at a time sweating in full PPE gear unless we are one of the healthcare workers who deal with those poor individuals who have become ill. We are simply being asked to consider the health and safety of others so more people don't get sick and we can get back to some semblance of normality.

I tell you, June, I think many of us have lost a bit of faith in humanity lately and people like this woman aren't doing much to remedy that. I wish both you and your child health and happiness.

Date change to make NorCo bigger and better

By Brad GREENSHIELDS THE tradition of the North Coast Open being the culmination of Coffs Harbour’s Golf Club’s Festival of Golf is coming to an end.

While the always popular Festival held at the end of October will continue for many years to come, this year’s North Coast Open has been moved to September.

The ‘NorCo’ as it’s colloquially known as, will this year be the NSW Open Qualifier that the club was successful in attracting.

To be held on 17 and 18 September, the 36-hole tournament that will see the top three placegetters qualify to play in the NSW Open.

The tournament will carry a total of $50,000 in prize money which helped the club reach the decision to bring the timehonoured event forward. Hopes are high the injection of funds will see the Open once again attract a crack field of professionals.

The North Coast Open dates back to the 1950’s and golfing legends such as the great Gary Player, Kel Nagle and Billy Dunk have all won it.

POLICE Brief

Woman pushed to ground POLICE are appealing for public assistance following reports a woman was pushed to the ground and intimidated by an unknown man near Coffs Harbour.

Sometime between 2pm and 2.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 28 July 2020), a 48-year-old woman was walking south along Moonee Beach near the sand dunes when she noticed a man walking towards her.

Police have been told the man passed her before returning a short time later, grabbing her from behind and pushing her to the ground.

The pair struggled before the woman freed herself and the man ran east towards Moonee Creek.

The woman wasn’t injured.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District have commenced an investigation into the incident.

As part of their inquiries, they would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist them.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his late 20s, between 175-180cm tall, with a medium build and short dark hair.

He was last seen near a boat ramp at a nearby caravan park wearing no shirt, two-toned blue boardshorts and a white towel.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the Moonee Beach area yesterday afternoon or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the nearby area to contact Coffs Harbour Police Station on 6691 0799 or to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

World Cup fever in Coffs

COFFS Harbour could well be playing a part in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Hosting rights for the global tournament were awarded to Australia and New Zealand recently and Coffs Harbour was listed in the official bid document.

Not as a venue for any matches but as a possibility for a base for one of the 32 competing countries to set up camp in.

The bid document saw the C.ex Coffs International Stadium highlighted as a preparation, training and acclimatisation venue.

Meanwhile Opal Cove Resort is listed as Coffs Harbour’s base camp hotel.

When the tournament is played, a healthy percentage of the matches will be played in Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle.

This means simple geography is considered a major reason why Coffs Harbour would be deemed desirable for a team to stay in Coffs Harbour as it reduces travel time for teams during the massive event.

Football authorities will now work with all three levels of Government to approach competing teams to base themselves in Coffs Harbour.

North Coast Football general manager, Andrew Woodward said football in the local region will get a real boost from the Women’s World Cup being played in Australia.

"It will put the focus on the game, and more girls and women will want to put their boots on and join their friends for some fun and games," Mr Woodward said.

"When Australia hosts significant events like the Olympics, Paralympics and other world cups, there’s usually a bounce in interest and participation in their sport at the grassroots level.”

Work will commence to transition pool managment arrangements to Council COFFS Harbour City Council and Lane 4 have announced that work will commence to transition pool management arrangements to Council.

Group Leader Financial Services and Logistics Mark Griffioen said a decision has been made by Coffs Harbour City Council to take over the management of the pools from Lane 4.

“Council has decided to take over management of the pools from mid-October to ensure this vital recreational service continues to be provided to the community and visitors. We have been discussing this matter with Lane 4 and have come to an arrangement that is in the best possible interests of all

involved.”

Todd McHardy CEO of Lane 4 said like many Australian businesses, particularly in the recreation industry, the business has suffered greatly with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Whilst COVID-19 safe plans have ensured swimming pools are now a great place to visit, the federal and state government restrictions caused a significant shut down period and loss of revenue, membership and swim school enrolment.

"Coffs Harbour City Council have agreed to release Lane 4 from this lease due to the extreme financial pressure COVID-19 has created. We will continue to operate

the Coffs Harbour War Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool and open the Sawtell and Woolgoolga Pools in readiness for summer, then coordinate a professional transition of management in mid-October.

We wish all residents well with their future swimming and thank the amazing Lane 4 local staff for their hard work during some challenging times. Knights on early charge

By Brad GREENSHIELDS COFFS Harbour’s newest rugby entity has made a successful start to its foray into the New England competition.

The Harbour Knights, a mixture of the Coffs Snappers and SCU Marlins, made the trek to Glen Innes and came with the win and a bonus point with the 38-5 result.

The two Coffs Harbour clubs are fielding a combined team this season after being ruled unable to play in the Mid North Coast or Far North Coast competitions this year due to COVID-19.

Both clubs applied to play in their own right against the Armidale, Tamworth and Glen Innes teams but the NERU said it was unable to accommodate both clubs.

The Marlins and Snappers then offered to join the competition as a combined entity and the proposal was accepted. The new team’s entry eliminates the bye that existed in the original New England fixture.

On Saturday the Knights flew out of the blocks scoring four unanswered tries in the first half.

The contest was more evenly matched in the second half but co-coach Brendan Hoy said

“To bring two clubs together in such a short space of time, it’s a pretty good result that win,” Hoy said.

“I think we’ve kept most of the players happy.”

Tomorrow the Knights will play its first home match of the season when it hosts Walcha at Bayrange Rugby Park.

Walcha is the early tip for this year’s title and Hoy said the Knights will need to defend well.

“They’re supposed to have a pretty good threequarter line with some guns out the back so it should be a pretty good game,” he said.

Shooters aim high with grant

THE range at Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Coffs Harbour branch is about to improve out of telescopic sight.

Work on the facilities at the club’s Dairyville range will include extra shelter over paths and the shooting area for people with disabilities as well as further accessible pathways.

The project has been made possible by $31,250 in funding from the Community Building

Partnership administered by the State Government.

SSAA Coffs Harbour president Rod Madeley said the club currently has five members who are disabled shooters. Those numbers swell when it hosts a major event.

He explained that adding shelter over the path that leads uphill to the benchrest range will make a large difference.

"The shooters get wet going up backwards and forwards at the moment," Mr Madeley said.

Surf titles just the beginning

By Brad GREENSHIELDS THE best junior surfing talent in the state is set to converge on Coffs Harbour.

Wednesday will see the first siren rung on the 2020 NSW Woolworths Junior Shortboard State Titles.

The breaks at Macauleys and Park Beach will be the scene where the hottest under-16 and under-18 talent in the state will be vying for glory.

Almost 300 surfers will be competing in the boys and girls divisions with local surfers such as Carly Shanahan, Rosie Smart, Bonnie Hills, Bella Morrison, Hunter Winkler Dayne Peel, Riley Smidt and Zac Knott flying the Coffs Coast flag.

Lee Winkler, president of the Coffs Harbour Boardriders Club, said he hopes the locals can do really well and maybe qualify to be part of the NSW Surfmasters Team to compete at the Australian Surf Championship to be held in Port Macquarie later in the year.

“All of the kids are good, clean living kids who live for

their surfing,” Winkler said.

“Between the three Boardriders clubs we’ve got here, there are some great mentors for them and their families are really supportive as well.”

The Shortboard Titles signal the beginning of a glut of events to be held on Coffs Harbour's renowned surf breaks.

Once the Junior Shortboard is finished it’s straight into the High School State Titles to be held on 11 and 12 August.

The Grom Comp will again be returning to Coffs Harbour this year, this time at the end of September.

The end of November will see some star quality taking to our local waves.

The Northern NSW qualifier of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle will be held on 28 November with the top three teams advancing to the national final.

Boost for first home buyers COFFS Coast first home buyers and the construction industry are big winners under a targeted boost by the NSW Nationals in government to eliminate stamp duty on newly-built homes below $800,000 and slash thousands of dollars for properties up to $1 million.

“This is a fantastic opportunity that I encourage

local first home buyers and those planning to build a new home to take advantage of,” said Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh.

“This boost will provide much needed support for housing construction and support local jobs in the building industry at a time when we need them more than ever before.

“Hundreds of our residents could see their bank balances benefit from this change – that dream of owning or building a new home doesn’t have to be just a dream.”

Under the changes the threshold above which stamp duty will be charged on new homes for first home buyers will increase from the current

$650,000 to $800,000, with the concession reducing on higher values before phasing out at $1 million.

SURFS up for professional and aspiring surfers with the announcement of the Australian Open of Surfing Tour to go ahead in late 2020 - with Coffs Harbour hosting round six.

The announcement coincides with recent news that professional surfing would not recommence until the end of 2020.

The series will feature a minimum of seven events and will take place in the latter months of 2020, giving professional and aspiring surfers a chance to win prize money.

2019 Vissla Sydney Surf Pro Champion Jordy Lawler is eager to get back onto the water.

“I think there’s a lot of surfers like me who have really missed the opportunity to compete since everything unfolded with the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Lawler.

“It’s awesome to hear that there will be seven events that will give people like me the chance to win some prize money and get back into the spirit of competing.”

Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden

said the domestic tour is tailored to help foster and nurture Australian talent.

“The 2020 Australian Open of Surfing Tour is the perfect platform for professional and grassroots surfers to come together in Australia to compete in a series of events in decent locations,” he said.

“We really hope we can build this series each year into a prestigious title and tour similar to the national series events we used to see in the 80’s and 90’s.”

The Coffs Harbour round will be held on the 29th and 30th of November.

All event will adhere to strict COVID-19 policies and regulations outlined by the Australian Government ad Council protocols.
