PADDLING is powering on at the new Greater Port Stephens Dragon Boat Club.

Founder of the Club Andrew Downey told News Of The Area, “We now have a good core group of paddlers and there is also a group of ladies from Lemon Tree Passage that are getting into the sport, of course, more people are welcome to join the Club.”

The Club is based at Taylors Beach where the calm waters make ideal conditions for paddling.

With the paddlers going out most Saturday mornings at 8.00am.

“Each session starts with a fun warm up on the shore before the group launches into the waters,” he said.

There are social and competition regattas available to the teams with the majority of paddles being either 500 or 200 meters in length.

Conservation groups and local tourism operators have been against the five year project since its inception claiming it would threaten the pristine marine park’s delicate ecosystem.

“Imagine thousands of Yellowtail Kingfish escaping from aquaculture pen(s) in the recent storm and the NSW Government assuring us they will be caught and returned to pen(s),” local conservationist Ronnie Wilson said.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said it was not appropriate for the fish-

farm operators to police themselves.

“There should be independent oversight of the whole trial and an independent investigation into the recent failure,” Ms Washington said, “With the Department of Primary Industries and Huon both heavily invested in this project, it’s hard to know where the truth lies.”

While Huon called on local fisherman to stay away from the area, the lure was just too great.

Over the past week

recreational and commercial fishermen flocked to the area following reports the fish were churning the seas seven kilometres off Hawks Nest.

Kingfish sell for up to $32 per kilogram and some fisherman claim they didn’t even need bait to attract the yellowtail, “I’ve never seen anything like it in more than 40 years of fishing,” Jeff Thompson said.

About 2 tonnes of the fish made its way into commercial outlets before authorities placed a ban on fishing the area.

By Marian SAMPSON THE classic story of Little Women is coming to the Young Peoples Theatre (YPT) in Newcastle as a musical, which will feature three Port Stephens performers.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March.

Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

This production of Little Women has two casts, May and Alcott.

“To have so many people involved with this production that were part of the team last time I directed the show has emphasized the vitality of memory and that it is upheld, while at the same time embracing the freshness offered by the young talent that has lifted the show to a new level and has uncovered layers that I hadn’t ever before considered,” he said.

She attends Hunter School of Performing Arts and is a soloist with the HSPA school band.

Wesley McGrath of Williamtown appeared as the Prince in Cinderella and now plays Laurie in the Alcott cast.

The third local member of the Little Women cast is Harold Phipps of Salt Ash who has completed a Diploma of Musical Theatre.

WORLD Wetlands Day was celebrated at Mambo Wanda Wetlands with a community rally.

The rally was well attended and the group

WetCon have attained the necessary 10,000 signatures to have the matter debated in NSW Parliament.

While the need to preserve wetlands was celebrated the jeopardy that faces Mambo Wanda

Wetlands is still a critical issue for many in the Port Stephens community.

While many are aware that the habitat supports the threatened Port Stephens koala population and includes koala pathways and breeding grounds, the habitat is also home to other threatened species such as bats, squirrel gliders, powerful owls, Wallum froglets, the green bell frog and various migratory birds contributing substantially to the aquatic processes of the estuary.

The wetlands are also a vital part of the local environment contributing to flood control and the filtering and cleaning of stormwater.

They are also home to endangered ecological communities of woodlands and forest.

Recycle those old X-Rays

MOST homes have a pile of awkwardly sized envelopes stashed somewhere, housing old X-rays from injuries and tests over the years.

However, it is not a widely known fact that you can recycle your old X-rays and declutter them from your home.

A customer service representative from Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council has drop off and collection points for old X-rays at our Council building in Raymond Terrace, and at the Salamander Waste Recycle Centre.”

“We encourage residents to utilise this option to dispose of their X-rays that are no longer needed.”

It is that simple and easy to make sure these items don’t get sent to landfill.

Every X-ray is coated with a substance that contains silver, so once you are done with your X-rays, that silver is fully recoverable and valuable to recyclers who extract the silver from the films.

X-rays were first discovered by a German physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

Within months of his discovery, doctors were using basic X-ray machines to look

at broken bones in hospitals and on battlefields.

Today X-ray machines are also used in airports to inspect passengers and their luggage for dangerous items, and to examine machinery for flaws.

X-rays are not the only medical images that have silver, with MRIs, CTs and mammograms also containing the valuable precious metal.

Modern X-ray machines, especially those used by dentists, can transfer images to computers rather than film.

These modern machines do not give off as much radiation, meaning they are

safer for patients, and make it is quicker and easier for technicians to receive the images.

This new technology should decrease the stacks of old X-rays sitting around medical offices and homes in the future.

For those with a stack building up before these machines, it is important that they are recycled in a responsible manner.

Please take your old X-rays to the Council building in Raymond Terrace, or the Salamander Waste Recycle Centre and dispose of them in the best way possible.

I encountered this joyful experience last week when I used the facility for the first time. It was important for me to load the entire family in the car and reminisce about the good old days when we crushed cans and received pocket money for them. I spoke fondly about raiding garbage bins and designing can crushers with my friends. The backseat crew seemed unimpressed.

When we rounded the first corner of our journey, the recycling tubs in the boot tipped over, and the combined stench of stale beer, chardonnay and ginger ale filled the car.

Still, I persevered, arriving at the car park, only to realise, in the 35-degree heat, that there were no parks. I ended up on the other side of the centre, and we walked with our bins of trash to the recycling facility.

There we met a lovely man who said, “The bloody thing is full again. You’ll have to come back later, love.”

We carried our cans back to the car and did some shopping (not too much, as there was no space in the boot to put it).

When we were leaving, there was a new crowd of people and the conveyor belts were operational again (only two of them, the others had malfunctioned).

We found another park and stood in the queue, only realising at that point that there were separate machines for glass and plastics (of course ours were jumbled together). Wine bottles were also prohibited (that cut our recyclables in half).

Finally, after another 20 minutes, we had our time in the sun. First the cans and then the plastic bottles (but not the ones we had crushed – the conveyor belt didn’t accept them).

With about 20 cans to go, the machine inexplicably rejected us. I told the kids to get a refund from Woolies, as my desire to donate was overruled. The kids returned with a handful of coins. They looked dejected. They wanted Maccas. We bought two drinks (they wanted ice-cream, but the machine was broken). We received them in non-recyclable containers. I started singing ‘isn’t it ironic’ and the excursion was over.

Contentious Nelson Bay Strategy

THE contentious Nelson Bay Strategy dates for public exhibition have been moved.

The strategy includes lifting the lid on building heights in the Nelson Bay CBD area.

The Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) had planned a public meeting to hear the concerns of the community on the issue of built heights and other matters in the strategy this meeting has been moved to 6 March to sit within the public exhibition period of the plan.

Geoff Washington President of the TRRA told News Of The Area, “TRRA members, new and old,

will have the opportunity to learn more at these meetings, about the many issues which TRRA has been following over the last 4 months.”

This includes the good news on issues including the Mambo Wetlands Koala habitat plus further updates on the meetings with key staff and Councillors about the Nelson Bay Strategy, Greater Newcastle Plan and several local Development Applications.

WHEN it comes to serving up a sausage sandwich the Nelson Bay Rotarians are definitely on the experienced list.

The Club caters the Bunnings Barbeque at least once a month and often fills in when another group is unable to attend for a reserved date.

Rotarian Phillip Marshall told News Of The Area, “We expect to serve up at least 500 sausage sandwiches every time we do a Bunnings Barbeque.”

He believes that the money raised makes a great difference in the local and international community.

The funds Rotary groups raise at Barbeques go into local projects like literacy, numeracy and internationally into World Health initiatives, like the fight to eradicate polio and providing communities with clean

drinking water.

Pets Friends For Life

WHILE the gone-now Festive Season often brings a puppy, sometimes the relationship after the excitement wears off.

The RSPCA, and other animal welfare organisations again have a spike in animals left for rehoming at the present time.

There are quite a few rescue dogs around the Bay, and as an owner of the rescued Ninja (a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) myself, I am a convert to seeing animals being rehomed.

Buying a pet is a long term commitment, and for some the option of fostering first might be a good start.

Councillor Jaimie Abbott is no stranger to rescue animals as she served as President of Hunter Animal Rescue for a period of seven years.

During this time she participated in fostering dogs and one of her two pet Labradors, Mika was first a foster dog before she became a permanent part of the family.

Cr Abbott told News Of The Area, “Mika was our third foster dog through Hunter Animal Rescue.

“She is what is known as a

‘foster fail’ as we couldn’t give her up for adoption, we fell in love with her, so we kept her.”

She believes that rescue animals make the best pets.

“It’s almost as if they know they have been given a second chance at life,” said Cr Abbott.

Having bought their first Labrador Charlize 11 years ago, not knowing anything about rescue or how many healthy dogs or cats were in

the pounds, she believes now it is important for people to know there are beautiful animals in need of a home.

“We know now, and we will always adopt animals for the rest of our lives.

“Mika is incredibly loyal and loving, I would recommend anyone seeking a pet for their family, that they go to a pound or animal rescue organisation as their first stop,” she said.

PORT Stephens Council has been named a finalist in the 2018 Hunter Safety Awards for its leading workplace mental health program, which aims to reduce stigma and provide better support for workers who are experiencing mental health issues.

The awards recognise companies and individuals in the Hunter region who are demonstrating bestpractice and innovative approaches in workplace health and safety.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s an honour to have Port Stephens Council’s strong commitment to mental

health acknowledged.

“We want to send our workers home in the same or better condition than how they came to work – and that goes for mental health just as much as physical health,” Ms Le Grange said.

“We saw an opportunity to improve how mental health is identified, approached, managed and followed up in the workplace.

“Along with a new procedure, we rolled out mental health awareness training for our entire workforce, including comprehensive training for managers.

“We also introduced Mental Health Contact Officers, trained volunteers

who are there to listen and direct people to where they can seek professional advice,” she added.

Ms Le Grange says the program had immediate benefits for the entire workforce.

“What we really wanted was to get people talking and to reduce the stigma that so often comes with mental health, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that.

“But the job isn’t over – we’ll continually work to ensure that Council provides a platform for consistent and high quality management of mental health in our workplace,” she said.

The break wall at Nelson Bay is always popular as is the jetty at Little Beach.

Recreational fishers do need a fishing licence to fish in NSW unless they are participating in a fishing charter.

There are several charter operators in the Bay offering inshore and offshore fishing experiences.

“If you aren’t a regular fisher taking a charter can be a great way of being at the right place to bag a catch.”

“Heath Power (peg leg) , is one happy customer on Dr Hook, in fact he was so happy with the first charter he came back for a second one week apart, and is already booked to go out again, it’s no wonder he was happy catching this thumper of a snapper,” he said.

Saturday’s C1 competition was the first of the year’s Monthly Medal events, with a strong field of 103 entries. The weather added to the difficulty the course presented, hitting off the Black tees, with a rating of 72/slope 134. Josh Rimmer scored a 78 to take out the Scratch Winner. Competition for the best Net Score to win the Monthly Mug was intense with 12 players equalling or making better than the course rating.

However, Josh Rimmer’s Net score of 66 added to his haul with the Monthly Mug win.

Herbicide Spraying in Open Drains and Retention Ponds MidCoast Council will be carrying out herbicide spraying during the months of February through to end April 2018 in various open drains and retention ponds within the entire Local Government area, to target grasses, reeds, annual and perennial weeds.

As a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments.

Only qualified operators will be under taking works. Herbicide Weedmaster Duo (360g/L biactive glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable. This program is subject to weather conditions.

THE new school year has begun once again and that means that registration days for many winter sports are just around the corner.

So whether your child is aspiring to be the next Dustin

Martin, Tim Cahill, Sharni Layton or Michael Hooper, there is a sporting club out there waiting for them.

This year, the battle for many families to find the required funds to simply register their child to play organised sport is an easier

The New South Wales government has finally come to the party and realised that the cost of registering and insuring children to play organised sport can be an expensive exercise.

So, for the next four

years, the government has introduced the ‘Active Kids’ initiative.

In essence, the state government will provide a $100 voucher to parents/ guardians of school enrolled children that can be used to help pay for registration

or membership fees for structured activities of at least eight weeks’ in duration.

Every child aged between 4.5 and 18 that is enrolled in school, home school or TAFE is eligible for their own $100 voucher.

President of Raymond Terrace Soccer Club, Peter Petryk said that getting children into soccer from a young age is great for team building and social skills.
