PREPARATIONS are in full swing, and the excitement is building for the Bluewater Country Music Festival.

The festival will take place over the long weekend, 9-12 June.

This year, the festival has given the title of ‘Ambassador’ for the very first time to local beauty queen Emilie-rae Guihot.

Ms Guihot is the current reigning Mrs Galaxy Australia, and she is proud to be the inaugural Bluewater Country Music Festival Ambassador.

Ms Guihot told News Of The Area, “I am so honoured to have been asked to play a special role in this wonderful festival.”

“There will be lots of events happening over the weekend, all over the Bay, with family fun and

Port Stephens Koalas is a volunteer organisation working to preserve the dwindling koala population

in some of the Hunter’s last remaining active koala habitat.

The organisation regularly responds to calls of injured or at-risk koalas, taking them into care and nursing them to health before releasing them back into the bush.

Recent projects include the manufacture of seats for Boat Harbour’s whale watching lookout, bird feeders for Anna Bay Public School, child-sized tables for Salamander Child Care Centre and maintenance work at the Yacaaba Centre.

MMA champ set to defend title

By Rachael VAUGHAN STORM Damage mixed martial arts light heavyweight champion, David Morley, is set to defend his title in Canberra soon.

The Storm Damage MMA Australia light heavyweight title will be contested in Canberra on 9 September, so David has a full three months of preparation ahead of him.

The Port Stephens father told News Of The Area, “My opponent is Dean Maxwell, who is

an up and coming fighter, with his last two fights ending with a submission, and KO with his hand raised.”

David started Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) eight years ago, because he was inspired to have an amateur boxing fight, but was met with a lack of enthusiasm by his old gym in Newcastle.

David decided to make his idea a reality, and rang Jamie Ballard at Ballard’s Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts at Beresfield.

David said “I fell in love with everyone there, it is such a great atmosphere!”

“I can’t speak highly enough of Jamie and Melissa Ballard, Dino Legovich, Craig McEvoy, Daniel Murray, and my whole jiu jitsu family; they have done more for me than I can put into words.”

“I highly encourage kids and adults to have a go at jiu jitsu, it’s life changing!”

Before beginning BJJ and MMA, David was 128kg, smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, and couldn’t walk a flight of stairs without losing his breath.

He is now a fit 100kg, though he fights at 93kg.

David said “This will be my last MMA fight, as I have proved to myself what I have needed to.”

Care to Dance?

WITH a long history, going back a quarter of a century, Soldiers Point Ballroom and New Vogue dance group are planning their July dinner dance, and this year’s theme is ‘dress blue’.

The dinner dance is an opportunity for dancers to get glammed up, share a meal then dance the night away and make new friends along the way.

The dancers get together each Thursday evening at Soldiers Point Bowling Club, for a dance followed by a meal.

The $2 entry fee goes towards future events to cover costs of bands and entertainment.

Everyone is welcome, young, old, experienced and new dancers, if you have been thinking of starting something new to fill in the cold winter evenings, this could be the perfect opportunity to keep active and meet new friends.

Exercise to fire your soul

AVRIL Dinham of Nelson Bay has struggled with depression for many years.

Reaching a point where she was aware that she needed help, she sought the assistance and support of family, friends and her general practitioner.

Being on medication for some time, and blaming the medication for weight gain, Avril realised it was more her lifestyle than medication which was causing the weight issue.

Avril and a friend decided

to exercise together and in turn support and make each other accountable.

Researching online for new workout ideas kept the process fresh and exciting.

During this time, Avril realised she was on an epic journey to combat depression and mental illness.

Avril told News Of The Area, “Going out, breathing in fresh air, exhaling the wonderful sea air and realising, by taking the first step of recovery and accepting I had depression, I was now on my journey to a better me.”

“Living with depression had become normal, I was seeing a psychologist and counsellor regularly, nothing, not even medication made me feel better, when I discovered exercise I started to feel back to me, how I used to be, how I wanted to be again.”

The Black Dog Institute highly recommends exercise to help the battle with depression and emphasises you do not need to join a gym.

Walking, taking the stairs, parking further away, housework; these activities, achievable for most, count towards exercise

and whilst it’s recognised that sometimes it’s difficult to get out of bed, finding that inner strength, that inner determination to help yourself beat depression will boost your confidence, selfesteem and is taking you one step closer to better physical and mental health.

“The first step is surely the most difficult, then it’s two, three and four, it’s not a quick fix, it’s a process, once started, it lights your being and fires your soul,” Avril said.

New Lifeguard Facility

New Lifeguard facility to build to replace existing

PRELIMINARY works are underway on a new Lifeguard Facility at One Mile Beach, designed to increase the safety and oversight of beachgoers.

The new surf life saving facility will replace the existing facility, which does not adequately meet the requirements of lifeguards.

Brock Lamont, Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator, says the new

building will help lifeguards to better protect and serve beachgoers.

“The new facility will cost $840,000 to construct and will be a drastic improvement on the current facility available to lifeguards,” Mr Lamont said.

“It will include storage areas for surf life saving equipment, unisex amenities for staff, a first aid room and importantly, a shark

observation tower.

“The inclusion of a shark tower will allow lifeguards to have better oversight of the beach and enable them to respond more quickly to sightings,” he added.

Construction started this week, and is due to be completed in time for the start of beach season at the end of September.

Rolling Closures of Port Stephens Pools

IN an effort to ensure that the Port Stephens’ Aquatic Centres are at their best in the summer, our pools will undergo a series of

rolling closures while essential maintenance and improvements are carried out.

Port Stephens Aquatic Centre members can visit alternative pools while their favourite centre is closed.

The closures will ensure that the facilities are at their

best for residents and visitors as the crowds dive into the summer swimming season.

The closures will allow members of the centres to visit alternative venues during the closures.

Tilligerry Aquatic Centre will be closed for two months from 3 June to 31 July.

WHALE watching, and celebrating ‘all things nature’ in Port Stephens is the concept behind Naturefest from 1 June to 15 July.

Naturefest encompasses a range of activities in June and is celebrating with the world on a stage with Paddle for the Planet on 3 June, World Environment Day on 5 June and World Ocean Day on 8

Lakeside Leisure Centre will be closed for one week from 3 July to 9 July.

Tomaree Aquatic Centre will be closed for one month from 17 July to 13 August .

Dear Mr JK, Let’s turn this into an anecdote.

There was once a little ant and he decided that he was going to try to convert a capitalist tarantula that was still kicking, but getting older and more unreasonable by the day.

The tarantula looked very scary with his furry head and legs, and his darting eyes and what appeared to be a spray tan.

The ant decided that he was too weak, in the face of such strength and madness, and instead, in despair, he gave up on what he was trying to achieve and he died a miserable death.

His baby ants didn’t get dinner because the mother ant was in such a deep state of melancholy that she forgot to hunt and gather, and they died as well. The end.

No, not the end, that was a very bad ending. Let’s try again.

The ant reconvened with his other ant friends and family members and, with their strength and resolve, wearing cute little six-legged ant-style hemp flares and revolutionaryred beanies with holes for their antennas, they surrounded the tarantula and dragged him into their den and tried some reverse psychology on him until he became an Environmental Warrior and he started yelling, “Make the Planet Great Again” (with a French accent that made all the female ants swoon).

The tarantula felt so good about himself that he allowed the ants to crawl onto his back and he carried them towards the horizon and they didn’t fall off the edge, because the tarantula now knew that the earth wasn’t flat or able to be sold off to the highest bidder (insert bright lights and uplifting Disney music here).

Don’t give up on your environment, Mr JK, or it will most certainly give up on you.

Locals Get Footloose at Festival

IT’S time to don the denim, drag out your boots and kick up your heels at the 2017 Blue Water Country Music Festival.

If you are interested in seeing local talent, this year the Blue Water Country Music Festival has a stage full of it.

Festival favourites Footloose will be back with their six piece band hosting the stage on Stockton Street which will be closed to traffic at the Apex Park end of the street.

There will be music on the stage from 9am-4.30pm Saturday and Sunday of the June Long Weekend.

Footloose are locals with band members hailing from Medowie and Lemon Tree Passage and they will be joined on the stage by talent from Port Stephens and the Hunter region.

There will be a total of 12 artists performing alongside

Footloose on the stage over the two days.

Ken Foote, who lives in Port Stephens and performs in the Footloose Band, told the News Of The Area that “The best thing about the festival is being able to present local country artists.”

“Seeing the town grow and bringing the festival back to the attention of locals, so that locals can come along and enjoy themselves” is a key feature of the festival according to Mr Foote.

Another group of locals to keep your eyes out for over the weekend are the boot scooters.

The Bay has two active clubs of dancers who are sure to be decked out and kicking up their heels over the festival.

There’s also busking in the streets this year and the winners will be performing on the Apex Park stage on the Monday morning of the long weekend.

Making up the cat contingent of our rescue pets of the week is a super adorable fluffy little feline.

KitKat, as she has been affectionately named, is one of the five orphans who came to the KITTY Rescue Project a

couple of weeks ago.

All of her litter mates have pending adoptions, but little KitKat is still looking for the purrfect family.

KitKit is snugly and a little lazy.

Her favourite things to do are eat and sleep, but she throws in a little bit of play every now and again.

Amanda from KITTY Rescue Project told News Of The Area, “She is a very relaxed kitty and will make a lovely lap cat or foot warmer!”

OzTag Five head to Ireland

A TALENTED team of OzTag players from Port Stephens has a jam-packed, sportsfilled trip coming up.

They head to Ireland on 8 July for 18 days with players from all over Australia to compete in a number of comps and tournaments.

The players will represent Australia in a number of different tournaments while over there.

Included will be a trination tournament with Australia, Ireland and Great Britain, as well as several local and regional competitions.

The tour was open to all players who have qualified to play at a state representative level, so we are lucky to have such a strong number representing Port Stephens in this special team.

Due to there being players from all over the country attending the tour, preparation has been difficult as a team, so it has largely

been up to the individuals to train, and keep up their fitness.

The players chosen from Port Stephens all play on a Monday night at the Salamander Bay fields and most of them will get in extra training as often as they can.

The experience level for these players ranges from two years to five years.

Tanya Napoli, Club Treasurer of Port Stephens OzTag, told News Of The Area, “We are a small Oztag Club in comparison to many others, so we are extremely proud of our players who are heading to Ireland to represent and promote the sport we love.”

“If anyone would like to help any of the players with their trip, feel free to contact the club via our Facebook page and one of our committee members will put you in contact with the players.”

Soldiers Point Marina hosts the sailing school, as well as storing and maintaining the fleet of sailing craft including three Lasers, eight Training Sailing Dinghies (Optimists), and a Topper Dinghy.

Guided by Graham Oborn and a team of fully qualified instructors, Tomaree High and St Philip’s schools students are able to learn to sail on the Port Stephens

waterway.

Previous students from the school are now competing in state and national regattas.

Graham Oborn told News Of The Area that “St Philip’s Christian College is supportive of the program which is funded by Soldiers Point Marina and The Real Futures Foundation.”

This week the Sailing School Instructor presented certificates of achievement to students at St Philip’s Christian College who participated in a regatta earlier this year.

THE Soldiers Point Marina Sailing School is a collaboration brought to the community of Port Stephens by passionate sailor Graham Oborn, The Real Futures Foundation, and Soldiers Point Marina.

Each year students at Tomaree High School and St Philip’s Christian College have the opportunity to participate in learn to sail programs for free.

The programs teach students about navigation, steering and the art of sailing.

Students participating in the sailing school learn more than just sailing skills, with self-discipline and selfsufficiency key life skills that are also learnt.

Soldiers Point Marina provides the boats, and students are fortunate enough to learn from experienced sailors like Graham Oborn.
