Road extension a vital link for CBD

IT has been two decades in the making, but finally Nelson Bay is to get a major thoroughfare that is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide a link between the CBD and foreshore.

The $1.5 million Yacaaba Street roadway extension from Magnus Street to Victoria Parade is being hailed by the town’s business sector as a massive boost to tourism and traffic management.

Peter Clough, a member of Nelson Bay NOW and the Tomaree Business Chamber, said that the new road accompanied by paving, landscaping and lighting would be a major attraction and a key gateway entry to the CBD. Mr Clough praised the foresight of Port Stephens Council, prominent traffic engineer Rob Caldwell and

Bay local Christine Lilly told News Of The Area, “I have been here for 47 years and known John Nell for 36 years and I like his policies so I am happy to volunteer,” she said.

Central Ward candidate and mayoral candidate Des Maslan told News Of The Area, “The people here have been beautiful, there has been fantastic co-operation and a phenomenal family environment at the Nelson

Bay pre-polling,” he said.

Candidate Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “I have been campaigning my entire adult life and this pre-poll has the most the positive energy of any poll I have attended.”

“Candidates and their teams have helped each other set up marquees and stands and are working cooperatively to make it a fun campaign,” she said.

The atmosphere was energetic at Nelson Bay’s pre-polling from the time it opened with residents unable to vote on the day having their say on the future of the Bay. Pre-poll voting is open

until 8 September at All Saints Uniting Church in Church Street Nelson Bay, Port Stephens, the Returning Officer’s Office, in Port Stephens Street, Raymond Terrace and at the Sydney Town Hall.

There is no absent voting at local council elections and fines apply for those who fail to vote this Saturday, 9 September.

“Approximately 20 years ago council planners, Rob

will facilitate better traffic management in that bottleneck area at the intersection of Yacaaba and Magnus streets, while providing easier access to the foreshore area.”

John Maretich, council’s asset manager, said that starting in mid-September three Council-owned shops in Magnus Street would be demolished to make way for the road extension.

“Yacaaba Street will be a 10km shared zone with one way traffic from Magnus to Victoria Parade, and there will be open air community space to allow for place activation such as markets or other small events,” Mr Maretich said.

“Council will have measures in place to reduce the impacts of noise and dust from the works but there will be some temporary changes to footpaths to ensure public

safety.”

He expected some works would be carried out across the Christmas period, but said that there would be little impact on the existing road network.

Ryan Palmer, president of the chamber, said that the connection would open up the CBD and benefit businesses, tourists and locals alike.

Literature Award soon WITH just a few weeks left until entries for the Port Stephens Literature Awards close, judge Lloyd Hogg has some tips for aspiring writers.

“There is no such thing as good writing – just good re writing ,” he said.

“The important thing is to get your story typed up and then to work on it.”

“Get rid of the unnecessary adjectives and adverbs and flowery language that doesn’t need to be there,” Lloyd told News Of The Area.

“Make sure that there is a strong story line which draws the reader in. If you haven’t captured the reader’s attention within the first page or so, the judges will not treat it kindly.”

“With so many entries to wade through, they are on the lookout for stories that stand out from the run-of-the-mill,” he added.

There is an exhaustive judging process whereby as many as nine preliminary readers come up with the top 20 short stories.

“They then award their ‘readers choice’ $50 prize to the one they consider the best and then hand the

We’ve just moved into our new home, and discovered the neighbours are nudists. They cavort around their pool in their birthday suits and it is very unsettling for my husband. He is spending ages in the garden trying to encourage our plants to grow more quickly so we can’t see them.

ALEX Goodwin is about to add a half marathon to his list of life achievements, and he’s running it for an extra special reason.

He’s running for his vibrant, kind, loving threeyear-old son Carter, who has cerebral palsy quadriplegia hypertonic spasticity.

This month, Alex will run a total of 21.1 kilometres to raise funds and awareness for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

All funds raised by this wonderful organisation go towards items that the Australian government and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) doesn’t cover.

One of the most important areas that funds raised for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance are used for is research into this condition.

One in 500 children in Australia (1 every 15 hours) are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral Palsy is a physical disability that affects movement and posture.

In Carter’s case, it impacts on his ability to sit, crawl, stand and walk.

It also impacts on Carter’s ability to communicate, learn and interact, which is

something we can easily take for granted.

All research improves the quality of life for individuals living with Cerebral Palsy.

For Carter’s parents, Alex and Sam, and his siblings Milla and Hudson, there is nothing more wonderful than the thought of giving Carter the best chance he can possibly have.

Sam told News Of The Area, “I am so proud of Alex and his training efforts leading up to the marathon.”

First all-Aboriginal team

By Charlie ELIAS PORT Stephens will have its first ever all-Aboriginal group of candidates contesting this Saturday’s local government elections.

Incumbent West Ward councilor Peter Kafer, a proud Dharawahl man and Aboriginal artist in his own right, will head up the team that comprises first time candidates Brooke Roach and Alannah Newell.

Mr Roach, a 38-year-old Aboriginal education officer from Raymond Terrace, said that he wanted to make a stand for not only the local

Indigenous community, but the entire Port Stephens population.

“I am passionate about bringing inclusiveness and respect to people from all walks of life,” he said.

“We use a successful model at school [Hunter River High] which connects our youth with our elders and I would like to replicate that across the entire community.

“I believe the council can play an important part in helping make this happen.”

“I would like to create stronger relationships between police officers and young people,” said Ms Newell, who has previously sat on Port Stephens Council’s Youth Advisory Panel.

$19,000 Raised at World’s Greatest Meal

SALAMANDER Bay Rotary Club’s World’s Greatest Meal has raised $19,000 so far in the worldwide action to eradicate polio.

Susanne Rea, who created the worldwide event, is the 10

Million Dollar Woman.

In four years since starting a locally based event in Cairns the movement has grown beyond her wildest dreams.

The event, which has gone global, has raised more than $10 million so far.

Susanne Rae who is being awarded an OAM this week for her work with Rotary told News Of The Area, “I travel around the world to speak about ending polio; we are so close now with the potential of having no cases of polio worldwide next year.”

Sarah Smith driven by future needs

WHAT type of future we are leaving our children is what’s driving Anna Bay’s Sarah Smith, an Independent candidate for the hotly contested Central Ward.

A mother and business owner who works and lives in Anna Bay, Ms Smith has shone the torch on the future of Port Stephens, as well as looking to restore confidence in Port Stephens Council.

“I want to make Port Stephens an even better place to live, work and raise our children,” she said.

“As well as living and working in the Bay, I am an active member of Birubi Point Surf Lifesaving and Tomaree Triathlon clubs.

“If I am elected to council I will listen to the community and act to ensure they are heard.”

Ms Smith said that topics of concern included improving town centres, paths, public amenities and signage, in addition to ensuring that residential developments were appropriate to local areas and transport links.

Also high on her agenda were environmental effects on development, walking and If we can maintain that for three years the disease can be considered eradicated.”

“I have travelled to 46 countries this year and 32 the previous year spreading the word and raising funds which the Gates Foundation donates an additional $2 for every dollar raised to fight polio,” she said.

Susanne, who is in her 70s, travels at her own expense and stays with Rotarians to raise funds,

cycle paths, creating business opportunities for youth, catering to aged citizens and appropriate access to health facilities.

“It’s time we had a new, energetic, honest and transparent council where

the needs of ratepayers are paramount,” she added.

Girl Power Newscastle University has a mentoring program called ‘Lucy’

NEWCASTLE University is creating a new mentoring program for Port Stephens girls to help them achieve a university degree.

Empower is being built and offered to the girls at Tomaree High School and Irrawang High School in Port Stephens with students already tapping into the knowledge of women in business, and university workshops.

The university has a mentoring program called ‘Lucy’ in place for current students which has been very successful and Empower will build on this program, helping school students to realise their aspirations of studying subjects like business and law.

Business, schools and students attended a landmark meeting this week at Irrawang High School determining some of the barriers girls face in going to university.

Tamara Young of Newcastle University told News Of The Area, “We are building a community of practice in building mentoring for Newcastle and

its surrounds.”

“We are working on developing ways that will create partnerships between

the University and Industry to build the community of practice,” she said.

“We want to help girls to develop their professional identity, build self marketing skills while developing a professional identity and employability skills.”

The program will be based around online tools including videos, workshops

There was robust discussion on how girls could overcome barriers to achieving their aspirations.

Bushfire Season Upon Us

BUSH fire season is almost upon us and Port Stephens has already had its first fires.

It’s time for homeowners to check their properties, clean out their gutters and make sure they are ready for bushfires.

To prepare download the My Fire plan app and be prepared for bushfires.

The Rural Fire Service website lists the safe places in Port Stephens in the event of bush fires that threaten lives and helpful hints on how to prepare your home in the event of a fire at https://www.rfs. nsw.gov.au.

Residents with properties in bushfire zones that have council land adjacent to their properties which are dedicated asset protection zones are being asked to take action.

Ian Crawford of Port Stephens Council is adamant that residents adjacent to council land have a responsibility to ensure that they are kept

clear and are not being used for storage, or as a dumping ground.

Council does have the power to take action against residents that fail to keep buffer zones clear.

Chris Holderberg, the Station Manager of Salamander Bay Fire Station, told News Of The Area, “It’s important to prepare your home; clear trees and shrubs from around your home especially if you live close to bushland.”

“Remove debris from gutters and around houses, material on roofs and gutters tend to ignite from sparks,” he said.

“Sit down now and talk with your family, make a plan to stay and defend or to leave early and make sure the plan includes your pets.”

“Consider if you have a means to extinguish flare ups, remember that the fire service may not get there to stop a fire so if you stay you need to be prepared,” he said.

Port Stephens Students Awarded Soldiers Point Marina Scholarships

By Marian SAMPSON SOLDIERS Point Marina awarded scholarships to two Tomaree High School students supporting them in studies.

Lachlan dePater who is currently in year 10 at Tomaree High School will be attending Hunter TAFE in 2018 studying a Certificate III in Carpentry while undertaking a traineeship in the construction industry.

Joshua Allardice has been undertaking a schoolbased traineeship at Port Performance at Taylors Beach and will be studying a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanics at Hunter TAFE. Joshua plans to spend his $1000 scholarship on tools of trade.

A third scholarship was awarded to Tyess Cook of Irrawang High School

who will be completing a Certificate III in Acute Care Nursing.

Lachlan dePater said, “I am very happy to have been successful, things like this scholarship can make a big difference to careers and training.”

“My boss told me to apply, I am very surprised that I am a recipient and it will make a big difference to me,” Joshua Allardice said.

Tomaree High School Principal Susan Xenos said, “Anything which gives our students a leg up into work placement is good.”

“This program shows that our school is producing people that are ready for the workforce.”

HAVE you ever wanted to learn how to make chocolate, or cheese, from the comfort of your own home?

It could be just one of the many culinary reasons why you would want to save the date of this year’s Tastes at the Bay, taking place from 3-5 November.

In addition to the chocolate and cheese making, visitors to the annual Nelson Bay event can also meet celebrity chefs, attend a jazz luncheon cruise or sample dishes and wines from some of

the finest local eateries and establishments.

Now in its 14th year, the Tastes festival has become synonymous with everything that makes Port Stephens such a major attraction to tourists and locals.

Organiser Peter Clough and his dedicated team of workers have been busy planning a program over two entertaining and fun-packed days that suits all-comers.

“The Tastes is a special and unique event with free entry to the public and this year we expect more than 12,000 visitors over the entire weekend,” Mr Clough said.

“There will be a cooking

demonstration marquee in Apex Park showcasing signature dishes from local restaurants, as well as celebrity chefs, local wineries, Tomaree High School hospitality students and oyster shucking.

“The chocolate and cheese making demonstrations are sure to draw large crowds, and we are expecting another sell-out for the jazz luncheon cruise on the Moonshadow.

“Other features include a high tea and a winemakers dinner at the newly constructed Nelson Bay Golf Club.”

The Seabreeze Hotel is sponsoring the 2017 Tastes.

THE Love Seafood Festival delivered a mix of events from the artisan Sacred Tree Markets with African Drumming circle to intimate dinners showcasing the region’s best seafood and hand gathered produce.

While d’Albora Marinas has been the epicentre of the event with everything from roaming circus acts to marine displays, there has been plenty going on around Port Stephens.

Locals and visitors also had the opportunity to board the Marine Rescue boat which provides emergency services throughout the port.

Educational sessions were well attended with sustainability high on the agenda.

The Trawler to Table series of events has seen restaurants from Little Beach to Medowie embrace the festival ethos of fresh and local showcasing everything the region has to offer.

Sailing Stalwarts Nurture Next Generation

TANILBA Sailing Club has emerged from its winter recess to begin its 2017- 2018 season.

Although small in number,

the club boasts some eight former or current national and state champions in catamaran classes.

On top of this, they are nurturing a second generation

of young sailors.

“We secured a State Government grant to buy several ‘Bic’ trainers and we’re looking for young people to learn the art,” he said.

“Those interested can contact me on 0419 912 420,” Sam Breaden said.

Meanwhile, club stalwart Mike Colecliffe invites any other interested locals to become part of the action.

“Just turn up at the club on a Sunday and we will fill you in on our set-up.

“We sail every second weekend and we have boats you can learn on or you can bring your own,” he said.

“Also, we are looking for a rescue craft to be on standby for the season so if you’re a civic minded citizen with a power boat we’d like to hear from you. My number is 041

Fingal Probus Goes the Full Monty

By Marian SAMPSON FINGAL Bay Probus Club members were expecting entertainment when the month’s guest speaker was Monte Dwyer.

After all, so many had enjoyed his time as the outrageously funny weather man on Channel 9’s Today show and as a group the Probus Club members wanted more.

Outrageous fun was well and truly provided as Monte told stories of his casual work as a young man in whatever came his way.

Then university led to drama training and the offer of work as a weatherman on Darwin TV that provided just what Northern Territorians

needed and loved to bits.

None other than Kerry Packer realised he was a breath of unconventional air, and in Sydney he became an essential part of early morning viewing for years.

Monte enthralled his Probus audience with his adventures around Australia in his 4WD bus, playing his guitar, singing songs and showing one of the travel programs he filmed for Australian Tourism.

The programs involved looking at the bush through urban eyes, joining the Grey Nomads and discovering the wonder of remote areas such as West Kimberley and Maralinga.

Monte doesn’t count

Port Stephens as remote after spending much of his childhood here in Raymond Terrace and Tanilba Bay. Julia Redlich, Probus Club of Fingal Bay’s publicity officer told News Of The Area, “The laughter and smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the morning showed that Monte, at large, is still brilliant entertainment,” she said.

A BUDDING Nelson Bay golfer has won selection in the prestigious Hunter District PSSA Golf team.

Amy Squires, aged 10 and a member of the promising junior Nelson Bay Golf Club team, recently took part in the PSSA Hunter selection trials at Newcastle Golf Club where she outshone many of her competitors.

As a result Squires was

successful in making the district championships and, in fact, she was the only girl selected in the team of eight golfers.

She will be playing at Camden Lakeside Golf Club on 6 and 7 September in the PSSA NSW titles where she will attempt to win selection in the prestigious State team.

NELSON Bay’s under 11 rugby league side created history on Saturday by becoming the club’s first ever team to win a first division premiership.

The drought-breaking victory was made extra special with the grand final match played in front of the club’s home fans.

While Nelson Bay has featured in a number of first division grand finals in the club’s 35-year history, this is believed to be the club’s first championship winning team.

Coached by Richie Kinkaid, the Bay side was strong all season before meeting the 2016 premiers Valentine Eleebana in the decider.

The Bay had defeated Valentine – who were till then unbeaten for two years - in the dying minutes of the qualifying semi.

“Half way through the first half of the grand final Nelson Bay lost winger Jett Doherty to a leg injury, leaving no bench,” said team manager Nicole Moses.
