IN emergency situations, a child can experience significant trauma.

The mental health and wellbeing of children in Raymond Terrace and surrounds is high priority for the Lions Club of Raymond Terrace, and they have put in place some cuddly friends to help these children

through potentially very difficult times.

Operation Teddy Bear began in Victoria 30 years ago, and has recently spread to other States.

The program sees community groups like Lions Clubs of Australia donating teddy bears to emergency services personnel, so that

they may offer the teddies to comfort a child whose family has been made homeless, a child involved in a road accident, or a child affected by domestic violence or sexual assault.

Inga Kasch from Raymond Terrace Lions completed the handover with President Judith Bee. Inga told News Of The Area, “We are so pleased to be involved in the program, and to be able to help,” “We gave some to John Hunter Hospital, and some to our Police here in Raymond Terrace.”

“We thought we could help to lessen the burden of some terrible situations for these young kids, a small token to help in a vulnerable situation.”

“I know it will also help the Police to see the children in these situations are emotionally eased by being given a bear,” she said.

The Lions Club encouraged the Police to call them if they run out of teddies, anytime.

It is hoped they never will, because that would reflect children being safe and out of danger across Port Stephens, but it’s a heartwarming thought that comfort is there whenever needed.

Inspector Tony Townsend told News Of The Area, “These teddies will compliment the use of the DV house in Raymond Terrace and our emergency accommodation, and it’s a little something that can help a child while support services make arrangements for children and families.”

“On behalf of the Police and these children, I thank you.”

“We see what the Lions do in our community, and we are so so thankful,” he said.

Those with long memories will recall Mr Martin’s election victory being taken to the Court of Disputed Returns.

His win, by approximately 90 votes, was disputed due to claims of electoral bribery, a charge that the Court upheld and a byelection was called.

Mayor to seek alternate funding for sporting complex PORT Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer has put on hold plans to sell a parcel of operational land at 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay, to allow consideration of other funding options for the Tomaree Sports Complex Masterplan.

“I’ve listened to the community’s feedback and decided to withdraw the Notice of Motion on the sale of 109 Foreshore Drive whilst we explore other funding options for the Tomaree Sports

Complex Masterplan,” Mayor Palmer said.

“I’m still very much committed to funding infrastructure, sporting or otherwise, in Port Stephens. But it’s important that we listen to the community and look at other ways to deliver these important projects.”

Mayor Palmer said, “There is greater demand than ever to provide new infrastructure and upgrade existing facilities and services to meet our community’s needs.

“As Mayor, I’m prepared to be innovative in the way we do that, but not at any expense. It’s important to retain the absolute confidence of the people of Port Stephens.

Speaking about the recent Pauline Hanson interview which saw her break down in tears during a Sky News interview on Thursday evening, Mr Carr recalled how Ms Hanson first came to be elected.

Mr Carr said, “John Howard’s indictable error was his dealing with Pauline Hanson.”

“Instead of rebuking her, he said she had a right to be heard, but was she was saying was utterly detestable.”

“NSW at the time had a population of 25% born overseas.”

50,000 Locals Served

THE Service NSW team at Nelson Bay have clocked up their 50,000th customer this week since the branch opened in September 2016.

The branch is proud of its track record of dealing with 93 percent of queries in under ten minutes while attaining a 96.8 percent satisfaction rate from customers.

Kristy Riley the Manager of the Nelson Bay branch of Service NSW told News Of The Area, “We mostly deal with Fair Trading enquiries along with motor vehicles and licensing, and of course in the peak season in the Bay there are lots of maritime services like moorings and boat licences.”

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello told News Of The Area, “If members of the Corporate sector were gaining customer satisfaction rates of 97% they would be happy with these numbers, but for Government to be doing this is mind blowing.”

Customers at the branch are surveyed as they leave but the team also sees comments about its service on social media.

Minister Victor Dominello is excited about some new technology which is coming our way as well with a digital

driver’s license and proof of age card.

A trial of the technology currently being conducted in Dubbo.

PORT Stephens Duty MLC Catherine Cusack this week announced more local families will be able to access before and after school care thanks to a $30,000 grant from the NSW Government.

Medowie Public School has been awarded the funding to expand their out of school

hours care program, creating up to 120 new before and after school places for students.

Ms Cusack congratulated the school on securing the grant from the Before and After School Care Fund, a $20 million NSW Government initiative designed to create more places in Out Of School

Kidney Dialysis Bus Returns

FOR the second time the The Big Red Kidney Bus, a mobile dialysis unit is at Nelson Bay. The mobile dialysis unit allows patients to go on holiday across NSW while continuing treatment, and will be parked in Nelson Bay until 9 June, before heading to Port Macquarie.

While it is great to see the Big Red Kidney Bus at the Bay, it also signals that Bay residents suffering from Kidney disease and needing dialysis can go on holidays to other destinations.

Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “Having the Big Red Kidney Bus bus in Port Stephens is wonderful for patients and their families.

“It gives them an opportunity to get away for

a holiday and we all know there’s no better place to be!!

I am hoping to see this as an annual destination for the bus,” he said.

Dialysis patients, on average, need to have treatment three days a week for up to five hours at a time – which can be both isolating and limiting.

The bus is making a huge difference to patients like Joel Williams, who is accessing treatment in the bus at Nelson Bay says “Dialysis is like Groundhog Day. “Every session is basically the same, so it’s great to have a change.

The Big Red Kidney Bus means I can have a break from the monotony of doing the same thing over and over again,” he said.

This is Joel’s second time using the Big Red Kidney Bus and he would recommend it to anyone.

The Big Red Kidney Bus is available to anyone on

haemodialysis in a hospital, satellite dialysis unit, or on home haemodialysis. In 2017, the Bus enabled 244 patients to enjoy time away from home, without missing life-saving treatment.

Kidney Health Australia gratefully acknowledges the Lions Club which has committed to raise additional funds by 2019 to underwrite the costs of refurbishing a new Bus for NSW, as the current Bus is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Kidney Health Australia urges people and families living with kidney disease to book the free holiday dialysis.

The Bus tours Victoria and NSW, and patients make their own way to the bus tour locations.

A UNIQUE collaboration of culture, craft and community is making Raymond Terrace Seniors Citizens Centre the place to be on Tuesday mornings.

Students from Raymond Terrace ALESCO Learning Centre join members of the community on Tuesday to explore their creative side.

The Raymond Terrace Senior Citizens Centre is a hive of activity, opening their doors to anyone wanting to work on their personal creative projects, or anyone who would like to join in with an already established group.

Uncle Eric, an Indigenous artist and Biripi Nation Elder, conducts an Aboriginal art class during this creative time, inviting anyone wishing to learn about traditional art, symbols and customs.

Students from ALESCO paint alongside community members from the Seniors Citizens Centre, and disability program participants, and Uncle Eric said he can see the difference it makes.

He told News Of The Area, “Everyone is welcome to join us, and we work together so well, everyone relating on the same level with their common interest.”

“I am so pleased to have the ALESCO students join us, all they need is a little bit of guidance and TLC, which is hard for some people to give in today’s world.”

‘Our little group works so well together and I’m enjoying sharing the culture and art of one of the oldest cultures in the world with such a wonderfully diverse group of people,” Uncle Eric said.

Besides the Indigenous art classes, you will find quilters, oil painters, crochet work being done, and hand sewing.

There is truly something for every crafty person to come along and be involved in.

And for those not keen on craft, there is a hot cup of tea or coffee, and some pretty fantastic company.

Courthouse Goes High Tech

NEW upgrades to the Raymond Terrace Courthouse, finalised in May were announced on Friday.

Speaking at the Courthouse, the NSW Attorney General, Mr Mark Speakman said, “The Government is committed to making sure our courthouses have the most up to date technology.”

The original major upgrade of 2012 has now been boosted by an $810 000 upgrade to existing facilities and were finished in May. The implementation of the technology means that transporting prisoners between prisons and courts does not always need to take place.

Mr Speakman said, “There is less of time wasting resources, wasting prisoners’ time and is a boon for victims and witnesses.”

“It re-traumatises victims when they have to attend court in a hostile and unfamiliar environment.”

Being able to remote in a police and prisoners rather than have them attend court saves time and money and also, as Mr Speakman pointed out, “Makes

the re-traumatisation less dramatic and will improve the experience of vulnerable victims.”

“AVL is now available on every local court circuit in NSE, creating a safer environment, saving millions of dollars each year in taxpayer money and reducing the need to remove Police Officers from frontline duties,” Mr Speakman had said in an issued statement.

Showcasing the new technology upgrades, alongside Mr Speakman were Ms Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for Digital Inclusion and Ms Jean Burns, Raymond Terrace Courthouse Registrar.

Of the range of technologies now in use, including a document reader and other IT equipment in a portable evidence trolley, as well as a new 65-inch LCD screen to project magnified images, Ms Cusack said, “Policing has become more high-tech.”

Victims of crimes such as sexual assault and domestic violence are now able to use a taped recording of their initial statement to police about the alleged crime committed against

them.

This can be produced as evidence rather than victims having to be re-traumatised by repeating their story multiple times, including in the court.

Speaking about the trauma of seeing alleged perpetrators of crime, Ms Cusack also said, “It is fantastic news for families in Port Stephens, anything we can do to improve the court experience is welcomed.”

Ms Burns added, “We have had the system since 2012 and it was recently upgraded.”

“90% of appearances of people in custody occur through the AVL.” Jails have their own Audio Visual Link (AVL) to enable courtroom appearances to be held in 260 courtrooms at 81 locations across NSW. Ms Burns said that the upgrades change the day to day operations of the Raymond Terrace Courthouse.

“It is a much quicker and faster system and the network will improve connections.”

The vulnerable witness facility that enables witnesses to give evidence in a separate room within the Court building is used approximately three times a month.

That is exactly what your mate is doing. You are his time-filler, his afternoon reprieve from clock-watching, his alternative to drive-time radio with all those irritating commercials.

I once had a mate (yes, only once) and I’m not sure what his job title was, but he pretty much had the same job as Homer Simpson.

He just had to hang around in case there was some kind of emergency, which there never was, and keep his hand vaguely near the big red button on his desk. Other than that, he had nothing to do. So, of course, he would call and say he was bored. I wasn’t bored. I was doing the washing and helping the kids with homework and cooking dinner, but he had all the time in the world, and wanted to talk about all manner of things so his shift wouldn’t be so painfully monotonous.

At first I just thought he really liked talking to me. Pretty soon I cottoned on to the fact that he only liked talking to me if he was also getting paid $50 an hour from his boss.

It was sort of like the reverse of a phone-sex chat I guess – definitely no sex, only dull and dreary conversation at my expense.

The same goes for those annoying phone calls people make on their Bluetooth. Not only are they taking up precious time, but every time they drive through the phone drop-out zones (pretty much half of Port Stephens), you get eleven words out of every sixty, like this: ‘So I really need to tell you about it. Are you ready? ……………. and that’s how I got into pyramid selling essential oils.’ Actually, come to think of it, maybe it is for the best that you only hear half the conversation.

I recommend calling your mate at 3am and tell him you’ve got a job night packing and you just needed to hear his voice and tell him all about stock rotation. He’ll never call you again.

Community Calls for Rezoning

CAUTIOUS optimism is the feeling of the WetCon group over the Mayor’s withdrawal of his motion to sell the parcel of land at 109 Foreshore Drive, opposite Mambo Wanda Wetlands.

Koalas have been seen using this land to access Wanda beach where they like the sands for salt.

The Mayor’s response

to community angst over the motion has been swift, the motion withdrawn and the sale of the land placed on hold for now.

The parcel of land has a large drain on it which floods at high tide, and also sports the Council Parks sign, bins and doggy bags.

The land creates a safe access to the waterfront for children and the elderly.

WetCon’s Kathy Brown told News Of The Area, “The community will only be content once the land is rezoned and protected.”

She believes that the community appreciates that

WetCon believes that now is the time to ensure that zoning of public green space protects the assets of Port Stephens.

Mayor Palmer said, “I’ve listened to the community’s feedback and decided to withdraw the Notice of Motion on the sale of 109 Foreshore Drive whilst we explore other funding options for the Tomaree Sports Complex Master Plan.

“I am hopeful we can take the community with us as we look to invest in our region.

“We know what it is they see as priorities, it is now our job as Council to focus on delivery,” he said.

Drum Corp fresh look

THE Irrawang High School Drum Corp has been turning heads and ears all over the place for a while now, with a growing number of public appearances far and wide.

Their reputation as being professional musicians who put on an enviable performance is growing too,

and thanks to some generous help they have some flash new threads to perform in, as well as some brand new equipment.

Irrawang High School are fortunate to have some wonderful people across the community associated with their school. and at a surprise morning tea, they took the opportunity to thank

those associated with the impressive Irrawang High School Drum Corps.

Luella Fagan from Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Recently MarketPlace Raymond Terrace purchased new sticks, uniforms and a quad drum for our drummers.”

Dancing for Fitness

WHILE these ladies, and quite a few men, aren’t getting stuck into a scrum every time they put on their dancing boots they are getting fit, having fun and exercising.

Bootscooting is one form of dancing where you don’t need a partner and almost anyone can get involved.

There’s more to bootscooting or line dancing than polished boots, sequins and broad brimmed hats.

The low impact dance is

one which is enjoyed from Nashville to the Bay. Up and down the coast there are bootscooting weekends, and the bootscooters are travelling to the Bay for the June long weekend.

The Blue Water Country Music Festival may not be going ahead but the bootscooters will definitely be kicking up their heels.

Many venues are still offering country music over the long weekend to keep the tradition of the once successful festival alive.

West Diggers has bootscooting events from

7-11 June and everyone is welcome.

Mel Smith President of the Bay Bootxcooters Line Dance Club told News Of The Area, “We have a great time, it’s fun and inclusive.”

She believes, that bootscooting offers a real sense of community and many of the bootscooters have formed strong friendships with dancers from all over the state.

“It’s great because anyone can bootscoot and enjoy themselves while enjoying some great music,” she said.

THE congregations of two of Port Stephens Uniting Churches have warmly welcomed Reverend John, his wife Alison Bleyerveen and their young family to their church.

Reverend John will be ministering at both the Salamander Bay and Soldier’s Point Uniting Churches.

The Reverend’s installation was conducted by the Reverend Rod Pattenden of the Uniting Church Hunter Ministry.

Cash for Soccer Club RAYMOND Terrace Soccer Club is set to benefit from $2800 in NSW Government funding for a new line marker at their home fields.

The Soccer fields, situated by the river, are well used sporting facility in Raymond Terrace.

The fields also house the Raymond Terrace Cricket Clubs fields, and are adjacent to the Port Stephens Netball Courts, and the Raymond Terrace Little Athletics Field, making the area quite the hub for sporting teams in Raymond Terrace.

NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres visited the Raymond Terrace Soccer Club

fields with Catherine Cusack MLC and Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer.

“The Liberal National NSW Government has a history of strong economic management which means sport clubs across the state can reap the benefits,” said Mr Ayres.

Aerial Spraying of Bitou Bush On Beaches and Headlands MidCoast Council will be carrying out aerial herbicide spraying at various locations along our coastal strip, for the control of Bitou Bush. Scheduled works will occur on a number of days during the month of June 2018, weather permitting.

This activity is undertaken as a part of a broader, collaborative and coordinated program with other public authorities and land management agencies on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Council’s contractor, experienced in aerial spraying, will be following recommendations contained within the “best practice guidelines for aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales”, as published by The Department of Environment and Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust and National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Two herbicides will be utilised within different areas determined by site specific requirements.

Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/Kg) will be applied at 20 – 30g/ha or Macspred Glymac 360 (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha. These herbicides will be applied, as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grass land.

FOUR local lady bowlers have recently come into the spotlight.

Vicky Parkinson has just returned from WA where she represented NSW and Sharon Williams, Pam McIntosh and Delma Price came up trumps in taking out the Newcastle triples championship.

Vicki represented the state in the Multi Bowls (disability) titles and reached the semi finals, an outstanding achievement considering she had been playing for only 18

months.

“This would not have been possible had it not been for the support of Club Lemon Tree, the lady bowlers’ club and others,” she said.

Meanwhile, our triples team, playing as a trio for the first time in the Newcastle District Championships beat off entrants from as far afield as Alder Park, Tea Gardens, Raymond Terrace,Wallsend and Heaton over five matches to take out the title.

With fewer senior lady

bowlers taking up the sport, bowling authorities are taking an innovative approach in actively encouraging young school age children to become involved.

They are offering coaching lessons and making their facilities available to schools. The results have been encouraging and have helped lawn bowls to shed the ‘old people’ image it is sometimes seen as.

The Medowie under 9s have everyone talking this week with their team commitment and effort, and the recent announcement of an exciting adventure they’ll soon be headed off on.

The Medowie under 9s played Lake Macquarie on saturday the 2nd of June.

The boys had a fantastic game with good all round play.

Well done to player of the week Dylan Kruger, and to Tiger Poolkerd as Captain for the week.

This Medowie team of talented and enthusiastic junior rugby players has been selected as the mascot team for the Wallabies vs Ireland match on the 23 June in Sydney.
