PORT Stephens is set to be the envy of every council up and down the coast as it is now able to boast that it has some of the best Lifeguard Facilities in the state.

The new One Mile Beach Lifeguard Facility which saw an investment in Port Stephens of over $840,000 was officially opened by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer.

Cr Palmer told News Of The Area, “It is fantastic to see this facility open just in time for the busy summer period.”

He believes that the facility will assist lifeguards to keep residents and visitors safe in the water.

Peter Petherbridge of PDA Building told News Of The Area, “The steel used within the concrete is galvanised and has anodes to extend the longevity of the building.”

He believes that this type of engineering will see the new facility stand up against the harsh environment over time.

Port Stephens Councillor Glen Dunkley said, “We now have three of the best and newest Lifeguard Facilities on the coast at Birubi Beach, One Mile Beach and Fingal Bay.” The building was a Council initiative which was only made possible through sourcing of funding through grants.

“All he has done is fortify the unity of purpose across the community, and elected representatives to protect the site in perpetuity irrespective of ownership.

“He has three options; one, hope for Labor to be elected in 2019 delivering a windfall profit to the developer; two, negotiate a biobanking agreement with Office of Environment and Heritage; or three, work with Port Stephens Council

to arrange a transfer of the site to the Mambo Reserve; clearly my preference is option three which requires Council support and that’s the solution I continue to work towards,” she said.

Kathy Brown who was a driving force behind the galvanising of community action to save Mambo and is a part of WetCon said, “This is great news for everyone who has worked so hard on this campaign, the Community of Port Stephens also deserve a huge thank you.

“Of course, the battle’s not over, we will continue to collect signatures until the matter is debated in NSW Parliament.

“The land is still not back in public ownership she believes that the community will continue to fight to save Mambo Wanda Wetlands until this happens,” she said.

While those opposed to the development of the land are celebrating, they know that they are simply marking the first fantastic milestone on what appears to be a long journey with reports already circulating that a new DA is likely to be lodged for the site.

NELSON Bay Rotary hosted a presentation on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) by Jessica Hannan, National Projects Officer, NOFASD. Her message was loud and clear, “There is no safe time and safe limit to consume alcohol during pregnancy, the tiny liver of an embryo cannot metabolise the smallest amount of alcohol (ethanol) in a mother’s blood stream.”

“Both neuro and physical development is affected, FADS is the term used to cover both and to date there is no cure for damage sustained through prenatal alcohol exposure.”

FASD is the leading preventable cause of nongenetic, developmental disability in Australia, (O’Leary, 2002).

Consuming alcohol whilst pregnant is a gamble, as not all babies who have

been exposed to alcohol during gestation will be born with FASD, there are other factors involved such as genetics, health status of the mother, timing during pregnancy and how much is consumed, binge drinking is worse.

It was also presented that FASD is not the result of an uncaring act, no one intentionally harms their child, no one causes FASD on purpose.

FASD is the by-product of trauma, addictions and/or lack of information.

Dear Mrs MM,

The end-of-year festivities at schools throughout the region are an absolute joy for parents.

They start with a note about buying a secret Santa gift for a kid you’ve never met (present number one) and regress from there. There’s the ‘dress up as your favourite Christmas Carol’ and bring a gold coin event (a three-hour Kmart visit before you end up sending your child in a green T-shirt with baubles pinned to every inch of fabric because his “branches green delight us”.

Then add 200 candy canes since Claudette wants to improve her social status by giving every kid in primary school a festive gift. Behold the end-of-year presentation where you get to see Jemima ChaseAugenstino receive the Academic Award for the fifth year in a row, while your little Benny gets the ‘Improved Anger Management’ certificate and Mrs Chase-Augenstino smiles at you like the cat that ate the cream bun and says, “Oh, what a lovely surprise for both of us.”

As someone who has many friends and relatives in the profession (bless their little cotton socks full of resilience and dedication), let me just tell you what they don’t want this year, in no particular order: a signed copy of The Complete Burke’s Backyard. A Donald Trump doll that says, “It’s fake news; Hillary did it; I will build a great wall” and various other gems when you pat his toupee. A mug that has been printed with a photo of your child (these gifts can be very off-putting to the teacher’s actual children when they visit on Christmas Day). Ten-year-old resource books that you found in your attic that you feel will be handy in the classroom (they won’t be). $100 in a brown paper bag in exchange for next year’s Academic Award for little Benny (teachers have strict moral codes that can’t be cracked). Finally, anything that they will have difficulty fitting in their car boot on the last day of school (though it is possibly fair payback for all the dog-eared books, paintings, halfchewed erasers, broken pencils and various other items that your child brings home from school on their last day).

You know, Mrs MM, you really can’t go wrong with a gift voucher and a heartfelt message from your child on a handmade card.

New Vibe in Anna Bay

NICK Stuart is an artist with a passion and his passion has seen him create a gift for the community of Anna Bay. The mural which Nick created on the side of the Anna Bay St Vincent De Paul building is one which means quite a bit to Nick, “I had been doing quite a few coastal walks and watching the whales breaching and it inspired the mural.”

Nick wanted to convey as sense of movement in the artwork, which relates to the whales migration.

“The portrait signifies the how far we have moved and migrated across the world,” he said.

Before the mural was created there was graffiti on the wall, since the murals

installation there has been no further grafitti.

Nick’s work is all over the world with murals proudly displayed in the United Kingdom and Holland.

He believes the work has inspired more artworks around Anna Bay which has the potential to become an open air gallery.

“It’s created a real community vibe, I want to paint the whole town, and the response has been incredible and the businesses near the whale and portrait murals are coming on board,” he said.

Nick now has murals at the mechanics and the hair dressers and other artists are also doing murals within some of the businesses at Anna Bay.

Nick who grew up in Bob’s Farm and attended Tomaree High School has painted at international festivals

and believes that through bringing an art scene to Anna Bay it will create a vibrancy similar to that seen in the

revitalised area in Newcastle.

Port Stephens Central Ward Councillor Sarah Smith told News Of The Area, “Street art that enhances the town, (which is not graffiti) and builds community pride

WE’D like to introduce Leah Anderson, newly elected President of the Tomaree Business Chamber.

Leah is no stranger to serving her community, she is a proud member and past President of the Salamander Bay Rotary Club and has in the past been President of Nelson Bay Town Management and also sat on the Board of Nelson Bay and District Business Chamber for many years.

Leah is a hands on person who is not afraid to roll her sleeves up to get the job done.

In fact you will often see Leah and her two children all working at Rotary events serving sausage sandwiches.

Mother of Mackenzie and Hunter and the owner of the successful Leah Anderson and Associates mortgage broking business, Leah is certainly connected to the community.

She is energetic and enthusiastic about the new role and working with other local business for the benefit of the community.

of the Tomaree Business Chamber, told News Of The Area, “In my new role I intend to work with the committee to grow the Chamber membership, deliver relevant education for members, while providing an opportunity for businesses to contribute to the future of the area through the voice of the Chamber.”

She believes that there are great opportunities for businesses in the Bay to work together collaboratively, creating leverage and being innovative.

“This is a good time for businesses to take advantage of the services which Chamber offers, we are planning to continue to run with the quarterly business breakfasts, and continue to support local events such as Tastes at the Bay and the Blue Water Country Music Festival,” she said.

Leah was the founding President of Port Stephens Women in Business, a group which offers networking mentoring and business development to the businesswomen of the region, she is a life member of the networking group.

Leah invites members of the community to contact her to discuss ways which Chamber can work with their businesses to deliver dynamic results in the future.

Olympics are in his Sights

AFTER winning many gymnastics trophies including ‘Athlete of the Year’ Josh Thompson has his sights set on the Olympics.

The eight year old started early as mother Jade explains, “We lived in a house with polished floors and one day as a toddler he said, ‘Look mum!’ I turned around to see that he had done the splits! We steered him into gymnastics since the age of four and he hasn’t looked back.”

Jade trains weekly and performs the standard ‘six multi disciplinary routines’ of

adult male gymnasts.

The rings and the high bar are his favourites.

His seven major trophies include ‘Athlete of the Year NSW’; ‘Country Championship ‘ (two years running) and 5th in NSW. Josh also gained two firsts, a second and a fourth in the Grand Prix series.

On top of this he has been selected for a high performance training squad in Sydney.

“We are very proud of Josh, his dedication and his achievements,” his mother, and lifeguard at Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, remarked.

Bay flock to Coolangatta

By Marian SAMPSON THE Nelson Bay Probus Club has been at it again, this time taking a coach trip to beautiful Coolangatta.

Members, wives and partners; 46 in total, undertook the trip which included excursions each day taking them high into the cool climate hinterland, and into the modern city of Brisbane, on to the bustling Surfer’s Paradise, and gave them a chance to explore the tranquil delights of Mount Tamborine.

The Club enjoyed an inclusive package from

Bombora Resort.

With the majority opting to take on an unforgettable evening at the Outback Spectacular show.

The show was an absolute highlight for most with the theme surrounding Australia’s legendary Light Horse Brigade and their exploits.

Ken Shadler, President Nelson Bay Probus Club, told News Of The Area, “The weather was very good which added to our fun.”

He believes that the trip

renewed old friendship and created some new ones.

“Probus is one way which older people can become and stay connected with their community and our members enjoy great social opportunities, some local and some where we travel further afield like we did on this trip.

“The activities of Probus include something for every budget and we welcome anyone who would like to increase their social circle and be more involved in their community,” he said.

PORT Stephens Probus have been on the road, out and about last month with plenty to brag about.

A group of 32 members are just back from an action packed week at Halliday’s Point.

There were lots of activities organised by members Kerrie and John.

Everyone had a great time right up until the the severe hail storm which hit and damaging every car and van in the caravan park, unfortunately damaging the clubs members vehicles.

Other recent local days out have included bowls, fishing and two walks.

Members are also planning a casual get together with Christmas Nibbles in the Park.

Ann Gibson Publicity officer for the club told News Of The Area, “This is a very friendly club for retired and semi-retired couples and singles with a variety of activities to choose from.”

She believes that being involved with groups like Probus can make a very real difference in people’s lives.

By Marian SAMPSON TOMAREE Triathlon is inviting members of the community to Try Tri on Saturday 9 December at 7am.

This weekend there is a special triathlon event which is open to all and is suitable for most people.

The Club has been operating in Port Stephens for 26 years and this weekend the race is the Dave Swan Memorial Race.

Tomaree Triathlon Club member and Port Stephens Councillor Sarah Smith is passionate about Triathlon and the health and fitness benefits of the sport, she told News Of The Area, “This weekend allows people to try out the sport, it’s a short course of a 300m swim, 11 km bike ride and 3 km run.”

The race starts at the jetty behind Salamander Shores and entry is $15 which includes insurance.

The event will raise funds for the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group who have received $1800 from the event in the past 2 years.

“I’d encourage anyone to come down and give it a go,” she said.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

Foot Golf At Bay

q Joe-Scibilia Taking Aim in the 2017 Australian Foot Golf Series.

By Marian SAMPSON FOOTGOLF is coming to Horizons Golf Resort at the Bay! Australia already has over 30 golf courses actively participating in FootGolf, 20 of which are in NSW. On 16 December Port Stephens sports clubs and groups are being invited to participate in a free FootGolf competition from 1.30pm at Horizons Golf Resort.

The afternoon will kick off with an introduction to the sport, which will be followed by the official launch of FootGolf in Port Stephens.

Next one stage of the FootGolf World Tour will be played and then it’s time for teams to try out FootGolf for themselves.

FootGolf is an emerging sport which is played to the rules of golf but with a size five soccer ball.

Played on the Fairways of golf courses FootGolf is a fast, fun and exciting new sport.

Holes are achieved on the par three, four and five holes which each kick equating to a golf stroke and a hole is achieved when the soccer ball is in the 52cm diameter
