Love Seafood, Love Funding

THE Love Seafood Festival has received a $20,000 injection of State funding from Destination NSW through the Incubator Event Fund of the Regional Flagship Events Program.

Fresh seafood has long been the cornerstone of the Port Stephens economy, supporting generations of oyster growers and fishing families and a thriving local restaurant culture.

The month-long celebration of fresh Port Stephens seafood held in August provides visitors with the unique opportunity to experience the local catch in the company of regional growers and local food legends.

Grant applications must have a minimum value of $2500 to be eligible for funding under the program.

DESTINATION Port Stephens is the tourism and business operators network that brings business and jobs to the Bay. The operators gather together bi-monthly to discuss opportunities and how they can interact with the community to make Port Stephens a better place for visitors and residents to live in.

The importance of bringing visitors to our region was recognised as was the importance of tourism in providing great options for locals in restaurants and facilities.

The organisation is responsible for marketing the destination and events and as such the small team who work at Destination Port Stephens make a difference to the lives of most of us.

At present Destination Port Stephens is working on Naturefest which will finish with the Human Whale at Fingal Bay on Saturday 15 July and Love Seafood festival

which runs over the month of August.

Williamtown Area Events TALISMAN SABER 2017 Exercise TALISMAN SABER 2017 (TS17) is a biennial combined Australian and United States (US) training activity, designed to train our respective military forces in planning and conducting Combined Task Force operations to improve the combat readiness and interoperability between our respective forces. TS17 is scheduled to take place from late June through to late July 2017.

The majority of TS17 field training exercise activities will take place in Shoalwater Bay Training Area, near Rockhampton in Central Queensland. Defence personnel and assets will also operate from Australia in Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Canberra; and from the United States in Hawaii, Indiana, Virginia, Colorado and Washington.

$3000 Youth Scholarships still open

SOLDIERS Point Marina scholarships are open until 5pm 7 July, 2017.

A total scholarship pool of $3000 is available and this will be shared between applicants based on the merit of applications submitted.

Applications will close on 7 July.

Applications can be downloaded at www. soldiersptmarina.com.au or can be requested via email to hrspm@live.com.au.

These scholarships are designed to provide funding for further training or tools of trades for young people who may struggle in their first year of study outside the school system.

In 2016 there were seven recipients of the Soldiers point Marina Scholarships from the Port Stephens region.

Amy Weston received $1000 towards a Diploma of Leadership.

Jessica Drummond received $1000 towards an Accounting Course at TAFE.

(HAR) Hunter Animal Rescue conducted its first foster carer information session in Port Stephens last week, in an effort to increase foster carer participation in the region.

HAR is a not-for-profit charity run by volunteers who dedicate their time to finding new homes for abandoned pets facing euthanasia.

The organisation rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes dogs and cats rescued from pounds and the RSPCA. The Port Stephens carer information session was facilitated by Hunter Animal Rescue Vice President and Foster Carer, Rachel Collins, and Port Stephens Carer Coordinator and Foster Carer, Margaret Welsh.

“I thought it was a very small way that I could help and also to try to highlight the situation to try to encourage awareness,” Ms Welsh said.

“Foster caring is extremely rewarding. I have so many memories and I just love getting feedback and seeing the pictures of very happy dogs with their new families,” she said.

Nepal is Poster Perfect

THE clubhouse of Nelson Bay’s Country Women’s Association (CWA), was a hub of activity at their annual get together to celebrate their country of choice, which, this year was Nepal.

Russ Hancock, Nepal Programs Manager, was guest speaker.

Mr Hancock has extensive experience and knowledge of Nepal after living there for many years managing development projects.

He belongs to Nepal International Fellowship, which is a faith-based organisation implementing health and development activities in Nepal since 1952.

He also visits Nepal

regularly to monitor the progress of multiple projects.

The CWA is supported annually by year 5 and 6 students of Soldiers Point Primary School, who conduct research on the chosen country, then collate their findings in the form of posters, which are placed in the CWA hall for judging by the guest speaker.

Janet Henderson, President, CWA Nelson Bay, said, “The school has supported us for over 20 years and the effort put in by the students is always impressive.”

Mr Hancock told News Of The Area, “Choosing the top three posters was very difficult. All submissions are worthy of a place however, the

deciding factors which helped in the selection process, were accuracy of information, nice, clean and colourful visuals and correct use of grammar.”

The impressive group of ladies meet on the first Monday of the month.

They are especially proud of the commitment to one another and the wealth of information and abilities between them.

Regularly showcasing talents from craft, gardening

to insightful mindfulness, they are a talented group.

“Social support and inclusion is of great importance to us,” Barbara Daffern of Salamander Bay said.

Barbara is relatively new to the group with 18 years under her belt.

“I jumped in with both feet, it has been one of the best decisions I have made, the ladies are wonderful,” she said.

Name change for inclusion of all

MEN who are victims of domestic violence, abuse, or require counselling or support when going through a tough time are welcome at the Yacaaba Centre, Nelson Bay. Lynn Vatner, Manager of the Yacaaba Centre, said, “We changed our name in 2006 from Women’s Information and Counselling Services to the Yacaaba Information and Counselling Services in an effort to let the public know we are here for men too.”

The Yacaaba Centre is open to men suffering any form of abuse, offers counselling services, referral if necessary and have facilities available, for example, if there are sufficient men looking to create a group of ‘men for men’.

Lynn suggested volunteering, for anyone wanting to meet new people, at the Salvation Army, Recycle Centre, Marine Rescue, Port Stephens Koalas, schools either in the canteen or listening to children read and aged care.

There are conditions for volunteer positions working with children or vulnerable people.

Marine Rescue Port Stephens is looking for volunteers, there is something for everyone, from running the museum, grounds maintenance to working in the radio room and out on the boats assisting with rescues.

Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre runs monthly workshops on becoming a volunteer and cover your rights and obligations. You will also receive a certificate of attendance and all working with children checks are free for volunteers.

Lynn also acknowledges the generosity of the Port Stephens residents who support the Yacaaba Centre when an appeal is launched.

You know, had you said you worked in IT, I would have found the method more acceptable.

I think the form of communication should suit the employment position.

If, for example, you worked as an employee of Facebook, your boss should have sent you a ‘memory’ link that showed snippets of your working life over the past year and the number of times you liked your 364 imaginary workmates for ridiculous things.

This would be followed by the inevitable sinking feeling when you realised that you’d been de-friended by your boss and even the lady who replaced the toner cartridges, and then you could have just clicked on the angry emoji face and typed FML and all would be forgotten.

If you had worked as the director of the FBI, your boss should have sent you a form letter with “I wish you well in your future employment endeavours” similar to the one James Comey received, because that’s all you deserve when you hold one of the highest positions in the world.

But given that you’re a landscape gardener, a simple message made out of two-tone besser blocks or some cow manure calligraphy across a strip of fresh Sir Walter saying “we’ve outgrown you” may have been more suitable.

WE’D like to introduce you to Ron Swan (OAM).

Ron Swan, one time mayor and councillor for Port Stephens, has been fundraising for charitable causes since 1979.

The OAM was awarded to Ron in February of 2017 for his service to local government and the community of Port Stephens.

Mr Swan was the mayor of Port Stephens from 2006 to 2008, deputy mayor from 2004 to 2006 and a councillor from 1999 to 2008.

As part of his service to the community, he founded the Clans on the Coast Celtic Festival in 2008 and his medal also recognises his Port Stephens Celtic Association presidency.

Mr Swan has also raised funds for cancer research, the Red Cross, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Nelson Bay Polyclinic and the Police Citizens Youth Club.

Ron was inspired to raise money while doing something positive for the community of Port Stephens.

Mixing his passions of preserving his Scottish heritage and raising funds for the good of the community, Ron founded Clans on the Coast in 2008.

The event has raised over $12,000 to change the outcomes for those living with cancer.

Ron Swan told News Of The Area that his family traces back through the McKenzie and Sweyn clans.

“I’m committed to do my part to keep the Scottish culture and heritage alive after the English attempted genocide of the Scottish culture after the Battle of Culloden in 1745.”

“I really enjoy sharing the Scottish culture with friends, the bands, and all the festival attendees,” he said.

Pipe bands, strong men, dancers, tartan, good food, and wine will be at Clans on the Coast which is held annually in September in Nelson Bay. The Port Stephens Celtic Festival has been granted $1,500 for the 2017 festival through the Port Stephens Council Community Projects Fund.

Tomaree High School Youth Leadership In Action

AMBASSADORS from Tomaree High School are undergoing a leadership program with the Real Futures Foundation.

The program looks at various training workshops, fundraising and participation in events such as the recent Careers Expo at Tomaree High School.

Youth Ambassadors have been working with community leaders and humanitarians Rotary to raise funds for programs which help our most at risk students.

Youth ambassadors will also have the opportunity to step up outside the schools system to participate in other arenas representing youth.

The Tomaree High School students are currently

delivering the Breakfast Club at the school which operates each Wednesday and allows the ambassadors and staff to identify students who may need additional assistance.

The Breakfast Club is supported by Valley Homes and Woolworths at Nelson Bay so it is a real collaboration for students’ welfare.

This week the ambassadors assisted Rotary in staffing a Bunnings barbecue, working side by side and learning along the way.

Bob Westbury the Foundation’s Deputy Chairman told News Of The Area, “It’s great for our ambassadors to mix with the community organisations which support the foundation.”

“Our youth need to be exposed to different social

settings, it helps to prepare them for life.”

“Starting out in life as people who give to those

300 Trees for Corlette

LANDCARE Corlette members are inviting the community to join them on 30 July between 10am and 12 noon for National Tree Planting day.

The goal of Corlette Landcare for National Tree Planting Day is to plant 300 trees which will create a unique habitat designed to provide homes for the small birds which are native to the region.

Port Stephens Council has already cleared the land ready for the planting near the Ketch Close Bridge.

Barbara Stack of the Corlette Landcare Group told News Of The Area, “National Tree Planting Day is something that the whole family can get involved in.”

“All you need to do is turn up with a hat, fully enclosed shoes, sunscreen and you can help to make a difference in the local environment.”

“We meet once a month and new volunteers are always welcome to join in,” she said.

All the plants will come from the Ngioka Centre and are endemic to the region.

While these are part of their operations, have you ever given thought to the other volunteer opportunities that exist?

Currently, there are vacancies for grounds maintenance, wedding/events co-ordinators, corporate support (admin, data entry, clerical), IT, PR, social media and website management, photography and graphic design.

The list goes on.

While there are many dedicated volunteers already in place within the gift shop, there is an opportunity for someone to become part of the retail management team which will involve all aspects of running a successful business.

By Marian SAMPSON SALAMANDER Bay Rotary Club celebrated its change over dinner on Tuesday night.

The club recognised the theme for Rotary for the next year which is ‘making a difference’.

This is not just a theme for the organisation, for many years Rotary has been working on eradicating Polio

and the goal is now well within its sights with only six cases internationally in the last year.

Among the Rotarians enjoying catching up with each other, there were several community groups present.

The Rotary Club is extremely active in the local community and this week it generously donated to 15 community organisations and

schools in our community.

With Rotary Salamander Bay’s generous support going to Lifestyle Solutions, Port Stephens Palliative Care, Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services, Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network, Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group, The Real Futures Foundation, and Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support

Group, Anna Bay Public School, Bobs Farm Public School, COPSY, Daffodil Day, Soldiers Point Public School, St Philip’s Christian College and the Rotary International Fund.

have made a very real difference.

Along with local projects, the club is active in its funding of the Kula Spirit taking healthcare to villages and women in Papua New Guinea.

Clarion Call for Volunteers

VOLUNTEERS in a community such as Port Stephens are vital for many organisations, some of which couldn’t survive without them.

Some volunteers we see face to face, whilst others are behind the scenes.

From those who listen to children read, conduct rescues with Marine Rescue Port Stephens and everything in between, John Weaver, Salamander Bay Men’s Shed, said, “Volunteers are both the glue that holds our community together, and the lubricant that keeps things moving.”

In conjunction with the Yacaaba Centre and Nelson Bay Bowling Club, the three organisations came up with

the idea of a Local Heroes Dinner, whereby volunteers, their families and friends are welcome to attend and celebrate the great work done by all.

The event will take place on Saturday 12 August and will include, drinks upon arrival, a three course meal, wine, and entertainment provided by Charlotte Rose featuring Paul Greig.

The Rotary Club of Nelson Bay will use the event to present their Local Hero award.

The theme of the evening is to thank, applaud and honour the people who man the op shops, keep the school canteens functioning, and support those in need.

By bringing volunteers together, it will provide a networking opportunity and broaden everyone’s

knowledge base of what is available and who to contact.

“The Yacaaba Centre would not be able to function without our volunteers. From [our] Management Committee to our daily reception desk, the volunteers keep the Yacaaba Centre running. Often volunteers feel they ‘don’t do much’ however without their cheerful welcoming smile and caring responses, our client experiences could be very different,” Lynn Vatner, Manager of the Yacaaba Centre said.

Lynn told News Of The Area, “We could not be the service we are without them and this is a great opportunity to show our appreciation.”

DARRIN Saunders, president of Anna Bay Tavern Fishing Club (ABTFC), was proud to hand over cheques to support local groups at their AGM on Sunday.

He said, “Our support to the local school, Marine Rescue Port Stephens and Black Dog Institute are all organisations close to our heart.”

“It is reassuring to know MRPS have our backs when we are out on the water and Black Dog Institute, we are aware of some members currently struggling and it seemed fitting to support those who support others.”

Renee Thompson, Anna Bay Public School P&C member, received the cheque on behalf of the school, and told News Of The Area, “The fishing club is making such a difference in our community, last year their donation went towards a new playground and this year, it will be going towards a new sign that the school needs.”

Lee Uebergang, Unit Commander, MRPS, said, “It is support like this that allows Marine Rescue to continue

to provide the service it does. It is very encouraging to be presented with such a generous donation.”

Black Dog Institute was unable to attend on the day.

TOMAREE Prostate Cancer Support Group along with Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group (PSWCSG), have come together to raise funds for Port Stephens Palliative Care Outreach Service.

Iain Woodhill, president of Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group, said, “It is important for people to know that, whatever is raised, stays in this area, 100 percent of proceeds from the upcoming event will go to Port Stephens Palliative Care Outreach Service.”

Iain told News Of The Area, “More men die of

prostate cancer than women do of breast cancer; a simple blood test is all it takes.”

Port Stephens Women’s Cancer Support Group is a volunteer organisation that supports women and their families at a very difficult time.

Cathy Turner, PSWCSG, said, “When you hear the diagnosis of cancer, it can be difficult to process, we aim to answer the questions many people do not even know to ask and provide emotional as well as practical support.”

Sydney Male Choir, along with our very own Port Harmony will perform at St Philip’s Christian College on 30 July.

Yachties Annual Celebration The community can get involved in the Port Stephens Yacht Clubs activities.

LAST Sunday the Port Stephens Yacht Club held its annual Club Presentation Luncheon at the clubhouse in Soldiers Point.

Ports sailors young and not so young turned out to the clubhouse to celebrate the year’s sailing successes.

It was a gorgeous Port Stephens afternoon, warm sunshine, a lovely lunch catered by Amanda Douglas, culminating in a ‘to be expected’ spectacular glowing sunset over the Bay. The event was attended by 75 yacht racing members, friends and family.

Over 30 awards were presented in recognition

of racing prowess, cruising adventures, service to the Club and included a couple of tongue in cheek awards for mis-adventure as well.

The club members race on a regular basis and some also participate in major events like Sail Port Stephens.

A new Club Champion, skipper Peter Ballard (who owns yacht Solanda) was crowned for his hard work and consistency, the culmination of many years of effort.

Others honoured included Barney Pinney (Trivial Persuit), Coastal Cruising Award; Allen Atkins (Rival), Hood Trophy; John Townsend and Ian Courtney (Young Pretender), Winter

Point score 2016; David Ramsay (Thief of Time), Ross Kelly (Good Life II), Spring Point score 2016; Summer Point score 2017 and Peter Chappelow (Distant Drums), Christmas Series 2016.

Vice Commodore told News Of The Area, “This past sailing season has been great fun; lot’s of keen but sportsmanlike racing, weather of every description, and of course, plenty of ‘animosity’ at the Club after every event! Come on down!” he said.

Councillor Nell to Run Again - 30 years on The elections will be held in September 2017

LONG serving independent councillor John Nell will run in the upcoming Port Stephens Council elections.

John served as a councillor between 1983-1987 and was re-elected in 1991 and served as mayor from September 2002 to April 2004.

John is a retired Marine Biologist with a PHD in Agriculture.

John is the chair of the Port Stephens Myall Lakes Estuary and Coastal Zone Management Committee, the chair of the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Parks Advisory Committee and the vice-president of the Tomaree Sports Council.

Average Resident Revealed Melissa Smith is the typical Aussie, according to the 2016 Census.

MELISSA Smith is the typical Aussie, according to the 2016 Census.

At 38 years of age, female, Australian-born and married with two children, Melissa ticks all the boxes.

Add in the family’s two cars and three-bedroom home, and Mrs Smith said she is “proud to be average”.

“I had a bit of a laugh when I heard the description and realised it was exactly me,” she said.

But with the region having one of the oldest demographics in the country, it is no surprise that the average Port Stephens or

Myall Coast resident is much older than the typical Aussie.

According to census data released last week, the average person in Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest is a 62-year-old woman born in Australia, who lives with her husband in a three-bedroom home, which is owned outright.

The couple have one car and a weekly household income of $903.

The data also shows that people aged 65 years and over made up 45.2 percent of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest population in 2016, compared to 37.6 percent in 2011.

In Bulahdelah, the median

age is 53 years and slightly lower in Karuah at 50 years, but still well above the national average.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said, “The older populations in these areas reflect a preference among many Australians to retire to coastal and rural parts of the country.”

Other information from the 2016 Census shows Karuah’s population hit 1,411 in 2016, an increase of five percent since the 2011 census.

In Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, the number of residents rose to 5,037, up from 4,499 in 2011, however Bulahdelah’s population fell from 1,519 in

The boys travelled to The Kings School in Parramatta on Wednesday 28 June for the competition, having reached that level as the runners-up in the Newcastle Hunter region.

There were 20 teams playing in two divisions on the cold and wet day.

They didn’t allow it to dampen their spirits though as the team won the first three preliminary matches ensuring them a spot in the semi-finals.

They powered through that match and won 15-5 to play Terrigal Public School in the Grand Final.

Unfortunately they couldn’t maintain their winning streak, going down 30 to 10.

Helen Bourne, Principal, told News Of The Area, “The boys played with great tenacity and sportsmanship throughout the whole day and they should be very proud of themselves.”

The team travelled to Sydney in a bus kindly donated for the trip by Fingal Bay Sports Club.

Helen said it was wonderful to see the local community supporting its students.
