Grant Hits The Jackpot $20K Winfall

SHOAL Bay local Grant Bendeich, has come up trumps winning $20k in the SportsPick NRL Super Tipper 2017.

Grant, who placed all his bets at his local, Shoal Bay Country Club, came top to win the Statewide title and the coveted prize money.

Mr Bendeich has been a Bay local for 30 years, running various restaurants in that time.

More recently he was co-owner of Ocean View restaurant at Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

Consideration is being

given to classifying koalas in Port Stephens as endangered; the protection of this six hectare parcel of land is crucial to the survival of our koalas.

“I encourage everyone who wants to see this environmentally sensitive land protected to contact Port

Stephens Council and make a submission about the use of this land,” she said.

Kate Washington is also advising residents to contact the Minister for the Environment, Gabrielle Upton, to urge her to do the right thing, and buy back the core koala habitat.

Dig Deep Celebrate Garden Week

CHRISTMAS Bush Garden Club and the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre are collaborating together to celebrate Garden Week.

The Christmas Bush Garden Club has been running in Nelson Bay for over 35 years.

Yvonne Hill, head of the enthusiastic gardening group told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Community Arts Centre will be opening their gardens to the public on Sunday 8 October.”

She believes that this will be a great day for families too,

as children can explore the fairy garden.

“As part of National Gardening week, our Garden Club which is included in the 45,000 National Garden Club members is holding an open day to provide the public with an opportunity to discover the tranquillity of our magnificent garden,” she said.

The Christmas Bush Club has been looking after a section of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre and on the approach to Nelson Bay Road.

Mayor Steps Down from Chamber Presidency

PORT Stephens Mayor and Tomaree Business Chamber President Ryan Palmer announced this week that he will step down as President of the Business Chamber.

The change will take place at the Chamber AGM which will be held in November.

The move will allow him to focus on his new role as Mayor, at Port Stephens Council.

The announcement was made at the Tomaree Business Chamber Breakfast meeting

attended by around 100 local business people at the new Nelson Bay Golf Club.

Ryan Palmer in his capacity of President of the Tomaree Business Chamber said, “The Chamber is in good hands, we are rolling out some really good projects including Tastes at the Bay.” He believes in the importance of events like the business breakfasts for business, and the community, as they help businesses stay connected and informed.

“Chamber was one of the instigators of the Yacaaba

Street extension, which will see better traffic flow throughout the Nelson Bay Township,” he said.

Guest speaker Susan Wilson of Regional Development of Australia spoke at the breakfast about the opportunities that regional communities can pursue and gain funding for.

She spoke of potential opportunities including a satellite university campus in the Port Stephens region, and the need for school students to undertake studies in science, technology, engineering and

the files “contain a wealth of information” on ancestors’ lives. “[They] may help you to find an elusive ancestor who simply disappeared,” Ms Davis said.

The discussion will examine State archives held for Government asylums for the infirm and destitute and mental asylum records and how to access them.

The Tomaree Family

History Group hold workshops on the first Saturday of each month.

The group was formed in 2000 by a group of people with the shared aim of fostering interest in genealogy and family history.

The group has a resource room which has a range of books, reference materials, computers and family history research programs.

Seek out an elusive ancestor

IS there an elusive ancestor in your family tree? Are you interested in finding out more about probate and wills?

The Tomaree Family History Group is hosting guest speaker Gail Davis, Senior Archivist, Research and Publications, from State Archives NSW to discuss probate and wills, as well as asylum records on Saturday 7 October at 9.30am at Tomaree Library.

The first talk on probate and wills will focus on ‘Probate Packets’.

A grant of probate is the authority given by the Supreme Court of NSW to the executors to deal with a deceased person’s estate.

“The will in the Probate Packet is considered by the court to be the only legal document,” Ms Davis said.

The second part of the presentation will focus on deceased estate files from the days when death duties were paid to the State government.

SHOAL Bay Beach beach has reopened to swimmers

after a wastewater overflow on Thursday morning.

Both NSW Health and Hunter Water have advised that test results returned

Charged Over Texts and Calls

POLICE have charged a woman following investigations into alleged child grooming at a Port Stephens school.

Strike Force Minnamorra was established in June by Police to investigate allegations into the procuring and grooming of children for sexual activity by an employee at the school.

It is allege that a number of explicit text messages and phone calls were sent between a 50-year-old female employee and a male student aged 15.

Investigations also revealed a second student, aged 16, was also involved on Sunday, show the water is safe for swimming and fishing.

About 3.30pm on Wednesday last week, the woman attended Raymond Terrace Police Station where she was interviewed and later charged with grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, use of a carriage service to groom a child under 16 years for sex and use of a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.

She was given conditional bail and will appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 6 November 2017.

The woman is no longer employed by the school.

Chamber and Tourism to Share Premises

IT has been on the agenda for Nelson Bay for many years, and now two key business groups have combined their headquarters, making the business of driving and building business in the bay more collaborative.

Tomaree Business Chamber is on the move, as the premises it has occupied for the last few years has been demolished, making way for the long awaited Yacaaba Street extension.

Destination Port Stephens (DPS) had outgrown its office.

Timing and common goals lead to a decision to share a premises with Tomaree Business Chamber

at 32A and B, Nelson Towers, Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay. Bringing the two teams together under one roof, in a purpose-designed office space will enhance communication and promote a stronger working relationship for the future of Port Stephens.

“The move to share an office space makes great business sense for both organisations, with collaboration between us on important local projects, on the increase over the past 18 months,” Chamber President, Ryan Palmer said.

Port’s Palliative Care

PORT Stephens Palliative Care Service comprises of a medical team, trained volunteers and a fundraising committee.

They provide care and support to patients for endof-life care and those living with chronic illnesses around Port Stephens.

The service is operated 24 hours per day, seven days per week, with after-hours telephone advice.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington was a welcome guest at the volunteers’ September meeting.

Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “It was terrific to meet with the amazing volunteers at Port Stephens Palliative Care.”

She believes that providing support to families at the most difficult time in their lives is some of the most important and meaningful work that anyone could do.

Kate went on to express her thanks to the

volunteers, for their care and compassion, as many families in our community have been supported by their kindness over many years.

“It was also clear to me that there’s a lot more that the NSW Government should be doing to ensure that our volunteers have the resources they need to carry out their important work. There are also more resources needed, to ensure that there’s adequate professional palliative care available for people facing the most difficult days,” she said.

All volunteers of Port Stephens Palliative Care undertake a training course prior to commencement so that they are able to meet the needs of those who the service cares for.

The volunteers deliver on a variety of tasks suited to their interests and skills, which include transport services to appointments and treatments.

The patients and their carers are also offered respite through the service, allowing

fundraising event which was held earlier this year.

The event was aimed at raising funds to buy a car for Dylan and his family whose need was getting to the point of desperation.

Dylan has nodular heterotopia, which results in daily epileptic seizures; in addition he is blind, unable to walk, talk, sit, and he also has no gait muscles.

A car that enabled Dylan to be transported easily was a high priority for the family.

Sporting Hope’s committee member Jim Hall told News Of The Area, “We are really proud to have been able to raise enough funds and support to purchase a 2016 Kia Carnival which is a suitable vehicle to transport Dylan comfortably and without undue manual

handling.”

He believes that community coming together is needed in cases where families are dealing with out-of-the ordinary circumstances, like Dylan’s family is.

“The Sporting Hope Association would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Nelson Bay Bowling Club, and everyone who supported the event as without this support we would have been unable to provide the vehicle to Dylan’s family,” he said.

The vehicle was presented to Dylan’s mother Kasie Sargeant earlier this month.

The Sporting Hope Association is a not-for-profit organisation which relies entirely on volunteers.

100 Years Young

FRED Burton was one of the few who make it to their 100th birthday.

It was only in January

that the Probus Club of Port Stephens was helping Fred Burton celebrate his 100th birthday and now there will be a celebration of his life on Tuesday 10 October, 2pm

Fred was a past President of Probus and a member for 31 years and was presented with his thirty years of Probus membership in 2016.

Dr Burton was also Nelson Bay’s first full time dentist before his retirement.

Fred’s attendance at meetings had been very regular up until earlier this year; he always sat in the front row with his mate, Cyril Blowes.

He was a keen and very accomplished snooker player with the Club’s snooker group well into his nineties and showed the “younger” ones a thing or two before handing in his cue.

Ann Gibson, President and Publicity Officer of the Probus Club of Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “The Club feels very privileged to have had such a fine gentleman as a member for so long and he will be missed by a lot of members in that front row seat of his.”

Now the dust has settled concerning the last local government election, I’m still peeved by something.

There was no sausage sizzle. It was the same at the last federal election. Not one sizzling sausage in sight. With most elections about as interesting as watching cement set, the only thing that saved them was the almost compulsory sizzle, raffle or cake stall.

What is happening to democracy and the Australian way of life?

The wafting odour of a sizzling sausage is enough to entice even the most reticent voter.

Forget the optimistic political pundits handing out flyers.

We don’t vote because Roger McMinty is going to build a theme park in Tea Gardens, or Mary Rogerson is going to fill every pot hole in Hawks Nest.

No, Mr JWS, we attend the polling booths, every man and his dog (particularly his dog), for the sausage sizzle (and to dodge a fine).

Communities live and breath sausage sizzles.

There’s something nourishing about trying to balance an icy can of lemonade in one hand and a slice of white bread, soggy with barbecue sauce, offal juice and sheep intestine, in the other.

I mean emotionally nourishing, of course, because it’s certainly not nourishing from a dietary perspective.

We’d be better off with half-coconuts filled with quinoa, beetroot, sprouts, cucumber and grated carrot (washed down with a pineapple, orange and mint smoothie).

But where’s the fun in that, JWS? We’re not a bunch of Bondi Hipsters. No, we’re Hawks Nest Hobblers with Hip Replacements.

And we’re okay with that, as long as it comes with a sausage on voting day.

Kids To Get Active

THE NSW Government has recently launched a welcomed new initiative to get kids active and healthy.

From January 2018, parents will be able to register online to receive the annual $100 rebate for each child aged from Kindergarten to Year 12.

This was a key initiative in the 2017-18 state budget as a result of concerns regarding rising obesity levels amongst children.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, is committed to reducing childhood obesity by five percent over 10 years.

The scheme will be funded by $207 million over four years.

The vouchers can

be used towards sports registration fees, swimming lessons, gymnastics or athletics.

A consultation is being held prior to the starting date to decide exactly which activities will be covered.

The vouchers are not means-tested as they are to encourage physical activity for children.

Activity and healthy living habits are formed at a young age, so it is really imperative that parents encourage their children to be as active as possible.

Local sports organisations that have committed to accepting the vouchers include: Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Nelson Bay Hockey Club, Nelson Bay Football Club and Port Stephens Power Junior AFL Club.

Suellen Goyne, Manager of Tomaree Aquatic Centre told News Of The Area, “Anything that gets kids healthy and active, we will support. Living in this area and surrounded by water, it is so important to learn to swim.”

The Department of Health estimates 20-25 percent of children and adolescents in Australia are overweight, with a quarter of that figure classed as obese.

Lack of exercise can lead to other health problems such as depression, diabetes type 2, sleep apnoea, breathlessness and heat intolerance.

These vouchers will be warmly received by local parents and by clubs and organisations to encourage sporting uptake.

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers there are serious consequences if they choose not to meet their tax obligations this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said most Australians want to do the right thing, but some refuse to pay their share, or pay at all.

“In the first instance we always try to help and educate taxpayers about how to get their tax right. Unfortunately in some cases people don’t respond or deliberately make false statements to avoid paying the right amount of tax – and we have to pursue this,” she said.

Ms Anderson said the ATO has sophisticated systems and analytics that ensure wrongdoing can’t fly under the radar. If a claim raises a red flag in the system, auditors will investigate further.

“In 2015–16 for individual taxpayers we conducted around 450,000 reviews and audits, resulting in adjustments of nearly $1 billion in income tax, and prosecuted over 1,300 taxpayers,” Ms Anderson said.

“Criminal investigations and prosecution are a last resort and not something we take lightly. However, Australians expect us to make sure nobody gets a free ride and we are prepared to use all the avenues available to us to protect the integrity of the tax

system.

“Our message to all taxpayers is that the ATO takes firm action against those who actively choose to ignore their obligations or try to game the system.”

“When choosing a course of action, we consider a number of factors including a taxpayer’s history of compliance, and the number of chances we’ve already given them to get back on track with their obligations,” Ms Anderson said.

“The decision to prosecute is only made if we have exhausted other options to get the taxpayer to change their behaviour and correct their affairs.”

The ATO is aware some people are willing to take risks and falsely claim work-related expenses. Ms Anderson said taxpayers considering risky claims should be on notice that the ATO is serious about dealing

with non-compliance, and the consequences can be costly for those found to be doing the wrong thing.

“In the worst cases a penalty can be up to 95% of the tax shortfall amount. For example, we took a taxpayer to court over his false car work-related expense claims in two consecutive years, and he was ordered to pay more than $4,000 in fines and court costs,” Ms Anderson said.

“In another instance, a taxpayer had neglected to lodge his tax returns over a 12-year period despite being given a number of opportunities to comply.

After being fined more than $100,000 and still failing to get his tax affairs in order, he was handed down an eight month suspended sentence.

October is Safe Work Month

OCTOBER is National Safe Work Month.

SafeWork Australia tells us that workplace injuries cost the economy $61.8 billion a year, a cost that the whole community bears.

This October we are being urged to check our workplaces and share our knowledge on how to improve workplace safety.

He believes that a safe workplace is part of having a good workplace.

THE area behind Tanilba’s scout hall became something of a ‘tent city’ at the beginning of the school holidays.

Some 55 cubs, both boys and girls, from as far afield as Nelson Bay, Anna Bay, Clarence Town, Medowie and Tilligerry set up a camp there over three days to hone their skills.

Group leader Ralph Francis said that the ‘learn by doing’ scouting principle formed the basis of their activities.

“It’s all about developing physical and mental awareness, independence, responsibility, social skills and initiative,” he said.

“Many of these children haven’t been away from home before so they will have to rely on themselves

and their friends to get by,” he added.

“Some will find it hard as iPods, mobiles and other electronic devices are banned.”

“We plan bush walking around the foreshore and across to the water tower as well as an inspection of the ‘Habitat’ nature reserve,” he told News Of The Area.

“Unfortunately, the total fire ban will prevent us having our planned campfire but we will have a mock one and cook our food in the kitchen at the hall.”

THE Real Futures Foundation’s inaugural Latitude One Charity Golf Day is being held on 20 October and the Foundation is inviting the community to sign up to support local youth.

The Foundation’s Chairman and one of the golf day’s sponsors Craig Baumann, told News Of The Area, “We are really excited to be a part of the day, and to be welcoming Latitude One as the Real Futures Foundation’s Golf Day’s naming rights sponsor.”

He believes that conducting an event like the golf day allows the Foundation to gain positive exposure and assist in the delivery of youth programs in Port Stephens.

Sea Shelter Marine Conservation

SEA Shelter is a new Port Stephens Not-For-Profit, dedicated to local marine conservation, founded by Marine Biologist Ryan Pereira and his partner Lia Pereira, who are also the owners of Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters at Bobs Farm.

The duo are passionate about preserving the local environment and assisting species that are endangered or threatened.

Lia Pereira told News Of The Area, “Irukandji is involved in some breeding programs to assist threatened species.”

She believes that there is a need for conservation at local and national levels, which will see species which are threatened, preserved along with unique environments.

“Sea Shelter is about research, rehabilitation, rescue and regeneration.”

The Sea Shelter research program will contribute to the knowledge base of Elasmobranchs (cartilaginous fish, including sharks), recording age and growth characteristics which will allow Sea Shelter to construct an aged-based population model on these species.

Sea Shelter will fill a gap in the region where there is minimal rehabilitation available for marine animals, specifically fish.

There are also plans to undertake a program which will rescue animals from traps and nets.

“The Port Stephens region has areas of mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass beds, giant sponge beds, soft corals and tiny sea horse gardens that can benefit from regeneration.”

Lia believes that Port

Stephens and the Hunter is an ecological hotspot in Australia and that Sea Shelter’s mission to maintain, assist in attenuation programs or regenerate the habitats already lost is beneficial to the environment.

“Sea Shelter runs entirely through volunteers who donate their time to the ocean, and hopefully generous donations of the public, with all funds raised going straight to the ocean,” she said.

Swearing in Ceremony

THE new Port Stephens Council lineup is official, with a special ceremony not seen before in Port Stephens Council history.

Councillors were formally sworn in, with their choice of oath or acknowledgement, in front of a packed crowd at the Port Stephens Council Chambers.

Mayor Ryan Palmer took his oath first, and was sworn in as our new popularly elected Mayor.

He now also holds the title of being the youngest Mayor to be elected in Port Stephens.

He thanked the Port Stephens residents in the audience, telling them “I want to thank you for your support, and trusting that I, in turn, will support you all, and our community, and give Port Stephens all that it deserves.”

Each individual councillor was then given their chance to address the crowd, thank their supporters, and discuss their vision for the new

term.

Central Ward Councillor Sarah Smith said, “This has been such a great experience getting to know so many wonderful people in our community, and I am so thankful to have been elected with experienced councillors

and newly elected councillors.”

“I am looking forward to achieving great things together this council term.”

West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott reminded the audience of his intentions to be a part of an accountable, transparent council, working towards improving the relationship with ratepayers.

Ken Jordan, re-elected West Ward Councillor, worded the experience of
