NAIDOC week is coming up from the 8-15 July 2018, and the local Indigenous community group in Port Stephens and Newcastle has some great family friendly activities for you to take part in.

This year’s theme ‘Because of Her, we Can’ honours the role Indigenous women play in our families, community and workplaces.

Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) has three events happening in our community.

Monday 9 July join the community in their march at Raymond Terrace.

Meet at 8:30am for a 9am march on the corner of Sturgeon and Port Stephens Streets up to the Port Stephens Council Chambers for a flag ceremony and smoking ceremony in the forecourt.

Wednesday 11 July 2018, Nelson Bay will host the second march for Worimi LALC. Marchers can meet at Nelson Bay Bowling Club car park at 8:30am for a 9am march up to the APEX park.

Following the march, there will be activities and a BBQ lunch at APEX park, concluding at 2pm.

Friday 13 July, Raymond Terrace hosts the Family fun

The lessons of “Stranger Danger” and the

PORT Stephens Council’s (PSCC) Library Services Officer Vicki Bailey was on hand recently to present framed certificates of appreciation to the volunteers at the Tilligerry Community Library.

The Library is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and has existed in one form or another for well over 30 years.

The first ‘Library’ was situated in a private residence before a Deposit Station was established in the recently vacated Lemon Tree Passage School in 1982. It was open for just two hours on two days each week.

PSSC purchased the former RSL Hall on the main road and the Deposit Station relocated in 1997.

Port Stephens Council For the love of Ivyanna invites a Royal visit

NEWLYWEDS Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are being formally invited to tour Port Stephens Local Government Area at the behest of Council, as part of their planned visit to Sydney in October 2018 for the Invictus Games.

Proposing the invitation to Council, Mayor Ryan Palmer says a royal visit would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for Port Stephens to showcase its incredibly diverse and unique product to a worldwide audience and would undoubtedly inspire more travellers to visit Port Stephens for years to come.

“In close proximity to Sydney and with world famous natural beauty, Port Stephens is one of the state’s premier tourist destinations and a must visit for many tourists worldwide. We have a world famous marine park and equally famous dolphin, whale and koala populations at our doorstep for all to enjoy.”

AN entire school community stood this week in solidarity for the family of a little girl, gone too soon.

Irrawang Public School teacher, Miss Twyford, is the Nan to a very special little girl named Ivyanna, who lost her life in April 2018 to brain cancer.

She was just fifteen months old.

The staff, students and whole school community at Irrawang Public School have shared and followed each step of Ivyanna’s short, but powerful and impacting life, and wanted to do something special to honour her memory.

Safe in the knowledge that the school could ‘give it a go’ and return any unsold beanies, the school ordered 100 beanies from the Mark Hughes Foundation ‘Beanies for Brain Cancer’ and began fundraising.

The school ended up well and truly exceeding their original plans, selling out of beanies with a grand total of well over 500 sold.

The school motto ‘We play our part” was certainly personified by the students and staff with their efforts to fundraise.

Irrawang Public School Principal, Mrs Stacy Mathieson, told News Of The Area, “Our school motto has truly shone through

Mark Hughes attended the special school assembly in person to have the school’s total presented to the Foundation, during which the entire student body sat

respectfully and listened to Miss Twyford speak about Ivyanna on behalf of her son Ethan, Ivyanna’s father, and daughter Jaidyn, Ivyanna’s Aunty.

Miss Twyford presented a slideshow for the audience, with a moving pictorial and video tribute to a little girl who made such a significant impact on this world in such a heartbreakingly short time.

Along with cupcake and tattoo sales, and gold coin donations from students, the school was ecstatic to present a cheque for $8,777.00 on behalf of Ivyanna to Mark Hughes.

Happy Probies

THERE are plenty of happy Probies at the Port Stephens Probus Club.

Recently nearly all 60 members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens headed out to the Saltwater Restaurant at Fingal Surf Club for an afternoon of fine food and company.

The weather was not conducive to drinks on the deck but the view was still pretty spectacular from the very pleasant dining area.

Stephens told News Of The Area, “It is great to see this venue open again with excellent food and service from David and his team, we found it is spacious enough to accommodate our larger group, as well as families and couples.”

In the same week a small group of very keen fishermen and women joined Pacific Blue Charters for a jaunt out to Broughton Island.

“Apparently they had great fun catching the bait fish and Skipper Brad Horn with the help of the great deckie Brendan Sampson did

Member, Dave Long was very cagey about how many fish were actually caught but one was a very tasty snapper.

“All in all, a very enjoyable day,” Dave told President Ann. This Club has many and varied activities to suit all retirees looking for fun, fellowship and friendship.

Former Teacher Pushes Out Rural Romance Novels Series “HOW does she do it?”

This is the question being asked by readers of local author Helen West’s growing list of rural romance novels.

With some four books published online in little over a year and a few more in the pipeline, her output seems prolific but if we look behind the scenes of the Oxley Crossing series, a very different story emerges.

The former Tanilba Bay teacher has a rural background and for years travelled the outback as a ‘grey nomad’ in a campervan with husband Darryl.

“Darryl loves to explore on foot the bush tracks, mountains trails and valleys of our wide brown land,” she said. “This left me alone at times and it was the perfect situation in which to gather my thoughts and write,” she added.

“I’d start writing a book and then put it away while the storyline developed in my mind” she mused.”

“Meanwhile, another idea for a novel would develop so I’d start working on it as well,” she added.

Now retired to Tanilba Bay, Helen, writing as Lena West, has the time to finish off her books, polish up the manuscripts, and publish.

“I’m a member of ‘Romance Writers of Australia’ and have attended live-in workshops and writers’ festivals which have given me the skills

PBL Stars THIS week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) winners were presented on Thursday night at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace by Mr Jason Stokes.

Jason has worked at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club for the last 11 years.

For the last 2 ½ years, Jason has been the CEO of Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, and he is passionate about the PBL program, witnessing the change in behaviours in local schools that the program has contributed to.

This week’s winners are; Breony Davis, from Grahamstown Public School, for assisting all students on the bus.

She always acts safely and encourages her peers to also act safely on the bus.

Ebony McGrorey-Clarke from Irrawang High School, for bravely shaving her head

to raise awareness and $500 for Beanies for Brain Cancer.

Eva Oakman from Karuah Public School, for having a very pleasant nature when in public and always using her best manners.

Jordan Cadogan from Raymond Terrace Public School, for displaying excellent sportsmanship and respect whilst participating in the Knights Knockout Competition.

Without being asked, Riley offers his assistance to teachers on a daily basis.

has successfully secured $3,806 in funding as part of the first round of the NSW Government’s $100m Regional Cultural Fund (RCF).

Grant for Arts Group to continue Centre renovation The Tilligerry Arts Group new home is one of sixtyeight projects from 12 regions across NSW, sharing in close to $50m in the first round of

This project will see further additions and improvements made to the recent transformation of the old Lemon Tree Passage Rural Fire Brigade building which Tilligerry Arts Group has repurposed into a multipurpose gallery and meeting venue for the community.

“This has been a great win for Port Stephens and a great example of the community having a vision to establish a strong cultural identity,” she said.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said he was pleased to see such a vast array of projects funded as part of round one of the new arts fund.

“Having grown up and raised a family in a regional area, I know our regional towns and cities can have so much to offer in the arts and culture space,” Mr Barilaro said.

“This fund is all about building on that rich arts and culture offering, and enhancing it – not only for those living in our

grants.

The RCF is part of the NSW Government’s $1.3 billion Regional Growth Fund which aims to improve

New mural for school

The PBL program initiative links local schools in together to support and celebrate the positive behaviour of students.

To honour their school joining the program, staff and students at Medowie Public School created a new mural, depicting their participation in the PBL initiative.

MEDOWIE Public School has a bright new mural in their school grounds, acknowledging their addition to the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) community.

Previously, the PBL program included only Raymond Terrace Primary and High Schools.

The PBL program reached out to Medowie and Salt Ash schools to join

The mural now takes pride of place at the school entrance, reinforcing the school’s core values.

The school funded art project was completed in conjunction with ‘Up n Up’, a community based youth engagement group who collaborated with the school to complete the mural.

Jason Wells, Assistant Principal at Medowie Public School, told News Of The Area, “Students, staff and artists worked side by side

This week an opening celebration was held to allow the students to share their artwork with parents and family.

THE group known as the ‘Pearls’ continue to support our local community with their generosity and thoughtful donations.

The ‘Pearls’ are a group of women who meet once a month for a catch up and a bite of lunch.

At the same time they donate $15 per person to go to a worthy cause.

“With about 20 members now it soon accumulates,” Kerry Patterson told News Of The Area.

“One of our members saw an article in the News Of The Area at the end of May from Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary asking for help to raise money to purchase another CuroCell,” Kerry said.

“These mattresses help prevent pressure ulcers in patients who are bedridden.”

“We all thought it was such a worthwhile cause.”

Bulahdelah Hospital is aiming to raise sufficient funds to supply 14 of these special CuroCell mattresses to palliative care patients in Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Karuah, Stroud, Booral, Bulahdelah and the Seal Rocks area.

But these mattresses don’t come cheap, each costing over $2,200.

The donation of $1,000 from the Pearls was gratefully received.

If you would like to help donations can be sent to the ‘The Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary Secretary, Ms Kerrie Smith, 7 Lee Street, Bulahdelah, NSW 2423.

The Pearls are also meeting this coming weekend to discuss ‘drop off’ points for clothing and accessories for this year’s ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ campaign at the Myall River Festival on Saturday 13 October.

Last year the sale of recycled clothes raised over $2,000 which was donated to Harry’s House, a facility near Newcastle for terminally ill children with cancer.

Mum’s Wish For Accessible Playground Comes True

EVERY parent knows that keeping track of children at playgrounds is a big call, and for parents of children with special needs it can be even harder.

Michelle Bokodi is parent to Isac aged 5 who has special needs and Sophia who is 18 months old.

She is currently homeschooling Isac who is autistic and has a high risk of falls.

Isac was enjoying his Ipad and seated in his wheelchair at the announcement of the funding.

Michelle approached Councillor Abbott about the idea of an accessible playground during the Council elections.

For the family to enjoy a trip to the playground at the moment they need to engage an additional carer.

Michelle Bokodi told News Of The Area, “Having a special needs child limits your ability to offer a fair amount of time to both siblings.”

The fenced playground will mean that she will be able to spend time with both children without having to employ a carer to help out.

“This will mean that Sophia will have opportunities to play at the park just like every other child,” she said.

MLC Catherine Cusack told News Of The Area, “It’s a joy to be here and I am pleased that Jaimie Abbott’s motion requesting State Government funding for fencing for the new playground at Shoal Bay will go ahead.”

The funds are coming from the Premier’s funds for special projects.

As a parent Ms Cusack understands the impact of a safe fenced play space as

she recalled the day one of her children ran onto the road.

“This will make a safe play space for families, this is one of the biggest ideas with the biggest heart that will make a difference for families with special needs children.”

While the funding for the fencing is a relatively small grant of just $12,000 it is sure to make a big difference to parents like Michelle.

Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “I would like to thank the Premier for releasing the funds to make the fencing of the new playground at Shoal Bay a reality.”

The State Government funded fence will surround a $120,000 playground funded

by Council.

The playground which is situated adjacent to the carpark at the traffic lights at Shoal Bay is due to be completed by August subject to weather.

Supermarkets Say Goodbye to Single Use Bags

Port Stephens Greens welcomed the demise of environmentally harmful single use plastic bags and handed out recyclable multiuse paper bags outside Woolworths at Salamander Bay. Sea Shelter founder Lia Pereira told News Of The Area, “At the recent clean-up of Marsh Road at Bob’s Farm community volunteers collected 933 full plastic bags and 2922 pieces of plastic bag.”

She believes that it is important for consumers to not simply buy the reusable plastic bags but the enviro bags to replace their single use grocery bags.

“Getting plastic out of the marine environment is important, it kills our marine life.” she said.

WOOLWORTHS has backflipped on part of their roll out of the cessation of single use plastic bags at checkouts for customers by providing their reusable plastic shopping bags to shoppers for free until 8 July.

These bags were originally being charged to shoppers for 15 cents each.

NSW is the only State to have failed to ban the single use plastic bag.

Waving goodbye to single use shopping bags at Woolworths and Coles this month is one way we are able to help the environment but we can do more through the choices we make, and by changing our shopping behaviours.

Eco-network Port Stephens is also welcoming the reduction in single use plastic bags.

They believe that we have almost come full circle, prior to the introduction of single use bags we all took our own bags or basket shopping, now we simply need to introduce new habits which will benefit the environment.

Nigel Dique of EcoNetwork said, “We would like to see all retailers remove single use bags from their inventory.”

Robyn Williams of the Port Stephens Greens said, “Port Stephens Greens will be again be giving away free paper bags on 1 July at selected Coles stores in Port Stephens.”

Rental Quest...But what about my 2 Weeks Rent in Advance?

MT.

THIS is probably the most misunderstood area in the leasing department of Real Estate. As an Agency who provides a Leasing (Rentals/Property Management) service we are frequently asked this question, particularly when a tenant is nearing vacate time.

At the time of signing a lease for a new property a tenant is required to pay 4 weeks rent for the bond plus an additional 2 weeks “rent in advance.”

When the two weeks is up after this time the tenant is then required to pay the next weeks rent, and so on. This usually all goes along perfectly fine until the tenant falls behind in rent or is nearing vacate time. For example they may stop paying the rent two weeks prior to vacate or think it’s ok to not pay for two weeks, stating that they are using up their “2 weeks paid in advance” at the beginning of the tenancy.

In my opinion to stop the confusion the term “2 weeks in advance” should be “rent for the next 2 weeks” thus calling it exactly what it is, due to the tenant upon initially paying this two weeks rent is then not required to pay another rent payment until the two weeks is at conclusion.

Of course it’s always ideal, and can be requested that you are ahead by paying another weekly rent at the end of the first week after you’ve signed the lease.

BACKING up from their win in 2017, sibling sewing duo Scarlett (9 at the time of entry) and Caesar Lewis (6 at the time of entry), have once again experienced success at the annual Sydney Quilt Show.

Entering the Junior Member A category, for young quilters in primary school, Caesar took first place honours with Scarlett taking out second place.

In an interview with News Of The Area, the siblings, both proud of each other’s achievements, spoke about this year’s quilt show experience. Scarlett said, “I feel very proud and I also felt a bit nervous as I am not sure what people might think about my quilt.”

Caesar said, “I was very excited to see my quilt at the show, people were asking me how I made it.”

“I felt a bit nervous when there were so many people looking at it.”

Caesar and Scarlett, who attend Wirreanda Public School, won prizes of fabric and book gift vouchers.

Quilting is an activity that requires years of practice and attention to detail, skills that these young quilters have already developed.

Scarlett said the design inspiration for her quilt, Rainbow Sunrise, was based on colours.

She told News Of The Area, “The design is one that mum helped me choose because I saw her doing the Dresden design for a class she was teaching.”

“I wanted to use that in my own quilt, so I adapted it and she is now going to teach people how to make my quilt!”

Caesar had the countryside firmly in mind when designing his quilt.

He said, “I just had an idea of

doing a farm scene and wanted a windmill and house in it.”

“The colours are perfect for the sunset at the end of the day on the farm.”

Thinking ahead to their next projects, Scarlett will use the fabrics she won to inspire her design.

Caesar told News Of The Area, “I haven’t started my next project but I think I am going to make a quilt of a chicken and it will look really funny.”

“I am going to push myself to the limit to get it done.”

My husband has been working extremely hard, but last night he went next door and drank bootleg liquor. On his return, he was swaying and rambling. Eventually he went to bed, but then needed to throw up. He didn’t make the bathroom, instead projectile vomiting all over the new carpet. He said I’d neglected my duty of care by sleeping in the spare room because he could have died.

Now he’s gone to work and left me with the mess.

A drunk husband snoring in a room full of vomit is not a life-threatening situation, otherwise our population statistics would be very different. Did he expect you to clean it up? That is what is known as rescue behaviour, a very bad habit to get into. If you keep being a fixer like good old Christopher Pyne, your husband will not learn to stand on his own two (wobbly) legs and take responsibility for his actions. You need to empower him by saying, ‘You have made a decision to get rotten drunk, and I respect that.

Now respect me as I book into a resort with my non-vomiting girlfriend. Call me when it’s safe to come home. Oh, by the way, the kids have two assignments due, AFL training and a dance concert.’

You mentioned new carpet. You know, polished concrete is the current floor covering of choice for a reason. It looks stylish and you can just hose out anything left behind by children, dogs and drunk husbands. It may be time to revise your decorating decisions.

Finally, I’ve got to ask why he didn’t make it to the bathroom. I was brought up in a family where my mother told me from an early age, ‘I don’t do vomit.’ Even as a three-year-old, I would have made it to the tiled floor. He could have at least thrown up on the quilt or himself. Tonight, before you leave for your resort, I suggest you make up a plastic chair in the shower for him, complete with pillow protector, till he learns a bit of self control.

Golf Winners at Men of SPORT League weekend

IT was another hugely successful weekend when the Port Stephens branch of Men of League (MoL) staged its ninth annual charity weekend at the Nelson Bay Golf Club.

The weekend kicked off on the Saturday night with a Sportsmen’s dinner attended by 140 people.

The night was highlighted by the quality of speakers, including Knights playmaker Mitchell Pearce, former Knight great Ashley Gordon and passionate league man John Quayle.

MoL state manager Bruce Walker and branch president Chris Kelly addressed the gathering while ex-Manly player Charlie Haggett performed a sterling job with the interviews.

Pearce, currently out injured, gave a player’s insight into the modern game while taking the opportunity to pay tribute to his mentor also in attendance, Allan Bell.

Gordon spoke of his formative years at the Knights [he was the first player to be signed by the Newcastle Knights on the entry into the NRL] and his continuing work with young indigenous men.

Quayle, meanwhile, highlighted his years as the CEO of both the NSW and Australian bodies, as well as issues such as the super league crises, the wonderful Tina Turner and anecdotes on that Newcastle enigma, Joey Johns.

On Sunday, 170 golfers lined up for the 4-man Ambrose golf classic which,

thanks to the hard working committee, was a great success played in blazing sunshine with every player entering the spirit of the day.

The combined ages of one team (standing) is 291 – and the other? A mere 90 years!

Congratulations to the “young” team – Michael Chisholm, Natalie Helm, and brothers Brandon and Zac Watt, who won the

night 4 sets to 2.

Well done also to the runners-up Meredyth Rae, Fay Morgan, Del Montague, and Rosie Newtown, who, despite a little stiffness the next day, are still enjoying their tennis!

Over the next two months the Club will be holding its annual RoundRobin Championships, followed by our next mixed night comps, beginning towards the end of August.

The second half started fast with Mitch O’Bryan in for his second try of the day in the first 5 minutes and Sam Croese converted 30/0.

The Big hitters in the second half for the Roos were Dwayne Fleming and Simi Asomua.

Just over halfway through the second half and Aaron Benn was in with Sam Croese converting 36/0.

With just over a minute to go the Roos we in again leaving the final score Karuah Roos 42 Raymond Terrace Magpies 0.

After the Roos and the Magpies played the ‘Old Boys’ from the two local teams took to the field for a friendly game of 12 aside. Two, 12 minute halves.

It was a fun loving game to watch. Well done to all. The score was 2 tries all.

Raymond Terrace had their biggest crowd of the year and the match, while only 24 minutes, provided plenty of entertainment and hard hitting.

Mr Higging told News Of The Area, “Raymond Terrace Magpies have been playing in the NRL Masters, played at the Gold Coast, since its inception back in 2007.”

“We always have a team on standby and easy to organise.”

“This year we asked Karuah would they be interested in fielding an Old Boys/masters team and we would play after their game against the Magpies,” he said.

The Karuah Roo’s supporters and ‘old’ players got right behind thew idea and fielded a team.

Craig said, “It was good to have that local theme about it.”

Players from the age of 35 to 60 joined in.

“Not only was it a bit of fun but with the large crowd on hand it also enabled the Club the chance to earn some much needed money to run the Club,” Mr Higgins said.

“We will look to have a game at Karuah next year along with the Terrace,” he said.
