Full STEM Ahead

ST Philips Christian College, Salamander Bay, recently held a STEM (Science, Technology. Engineering and Mathematics) week which was open to all schools in the Port Stephens area.

The particular focus was on encouraging Aboriginal girls in to the subject area, a demographic that is highly under-represented in this academic and career area.

Each day throughout the week saw a different visitor and aspect of the STEM arena and was co-ordinated

by Jodi Phipps, Science and Computing Teacher.

The week featured visits from the RAAF to talk about their simulators; the University of Wollongong to discuss DNA, isotopes, water tanks, Starlab and 3D Printing; LendLease company - to talk about Civil Engineering; the University of Newcastle to demonstrate Robotics; plus students watched the film ‘Hidden Figures’ about Black female Mathematicians who worked at NASA during the Space Race.

All students at the school participated in the week’s activities.

Life Changing Win for Recognition for Holiday Parks Shades Customer

SARAH Evans never dreamed that a small pamper during her holiday would lead to a life changing moment, but that is what her manicure and pedicure at Shades of Beauty at Nelson Bay turned into.

Like anyone asked to fill in a free entry Sarah complied, and five months later she received a shock phone call telling her she had won $5000 from Jessica Cosmetics.

Sarah Evans told News Of The Area, “The prize was for either $5000 in travel or $5000 in cash. We’re opting for the cash which we will be putting towards a home loan deposit.”

The family of four are hoping to buy in the Nelson Bay area around February next year.

“I’m a Bay local and have lived here most of my life,” she said.

Sarah is mother of two boys Cody Evans aged 14 and Carter Harrison aged three.

This Reporter visited on the Friday, when the University of Newcastle was working with the children on Robotics.

Dr Wong from the University, who is a PostDoctoral Researcher in Neuroscience and has a background in Robotics and Computer Science, was overseeing the session.

Robots were used to perform rescues, dancing and a football match.

Robot vehicles followed a randomly selected winding line on a series of tiles to a designated rescue area.

On the way the robot could encounter challenging obstacles and then has to

rescue a ‘person’ when it encounters a chemical spill.

The pupils were very engaged by this activity.

Other students were working on programming robots to dance.

Lastly we had the football playing robot.

Dr Wong told News Of The Area, “The ultimate aim is to have a football match between life-sized robots and the world’s top players, with the intention of beating them, by the year 2050.”

The Robocup workshop particularly focusses on females and schools in low socio-economic areas, though all schools are welcome to apply.

PORT Stephens Councilowned holiday parks, Thou Walla Sunset Retreat and Fingal Bay Holiday Park, have both taken home Silver at the 2017 NSW Tourism Awards.

Thou Walla Sunset Retreat in Soldiers Point took home Silver for the second consecutive year in the ‘Unique Accommodation’ category for its sunset-view ‘glamping’ tents, coming in behind Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Fingal Bay Holiday Park took out Silver in the ‘Caravan & Holiday Parks’ category against five strong finalists.

Kim Latham, Port Stephens Council’s Holiday Parks Operations Manager, says the awards are a wonderful recognition of the hard work put in by all holiday parks staff.

“It’s an honour to be recognised at state level and it shows that our holiday parks stack up against our industry peers,” Ms Latham said.

“Winning these awards is a great encouragement for everyone involved in the parks from the ground level up to higher management. It

means we are doing things right and can continue to enhance our guests experience each time they stay with us,” she said.

“Fingal Bay Holiday Park has recently added some great additions including a State-of-the-Art amenities block, while our glamping tents at Thou Walla continue to be a popular way for couples to unwind and enjoy a peaceful break in beautiful Soldiers Point,” she said.

Ms Latham attributes the wins to team work, planning and leadership.

“Over the past year we have had great success in many areas, which has been backed up with glowing guest reviews and comments across social media and personally to our park staff.

“These positive results have been due to strong leadership, planning and team communication, as well as regular reviews of our properties to ensure we continue to be amongst the leaders of the industry,” Ms Latham said.

Both holiday parks are now preparing for the busy summer holiday season in Port Stephens.

Catherine Cusack Duty MLC for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “This improvement in infrastructure for the residents of Port Stephens is the realisation of an election promise from past NSW Premier Mike Baird.”

She believes the new facility will see an improvement in the delivery of health services to the people of Port Stephens and reduce their need to travel to access services.

With the site for the facility identified, the planning and scoping for the new service is now underway.

The key differences between HealthOne facilities, and other facilities, is that they offer integrated care provided by general practice and community health services, organised multidisciplinary team care, care across a spectrum from prevention to continuing care and client and community involvement.

The one shop stop for health services on the Peninsula will enable people to access allied health services within their own community.

“The State-of-the-Art facility will also assist Port Stephens to recruit top doctors and practitioners,” she said.

Gary Spain, Tomaree Community Hospital Service Manager said, “The new service will be modelled on Raymond Terrace HealthOne. The funds are targeted at community and allied health access and will see residents staying in their own homes longer,” he said.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “It is a huge asset for Port Stephens’ aging population to have access to facilities on the Tomaree Peninsula, delivered on the same site as the hospital.”

He believes the facility will greatly reduce residents need to travel to access quality health services.

“The facility will become the heart of this community’s health needs,” he said.

Port Stephens Councillors will be involved in the planning phase for the

facility, providing their local knowledge to ensure that the planning team will have the benefit of strong local knowledge.

Councillor Jaimie Abbott said, “This investment in Port Stephens shows that the government is listening to the needs of this community,

it is wonderful to have the government here and delivering for Port Stephens,” she said.

While the services which will be offered in the new facility are not yet finalised, consideration is being given to increased imaging services, general practitioner services

and dental services.

The investment in the future of Tomaree Community Hospital and the associated health services will be greatly beneficial, creating a sustainable future for the health services provided to the community.

She believes that playing Bridge has kept her mind agile.

Born in Ireland, Kay was a nurse. She emigrated to Australia in 1967 with her husband, after living a life which saw her travel the world to postings that her husband, who was a Dunkirk veteran, held with the British Army.

They Lived in Germany, Hong Kong and Japan during his years in the Army.

Kay has three children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In recognition of this great lady reaching her century she many special messages including letters from the

Queen, Governor General, Prime Minister, Premier and local members.

Kay is hoping that the attention around her becoming a centurion will see the Tomaree Bridge Club gain a more accessible venue allowing older people better access to an activity which will help keep their minds sharp.

Amber Noonan of the Tomaree Bridge Club said, “There are 20 people that can’t come because they can’t get up the ramp, it is too long, the venue is also in need of disabled car parking spaces.”

Kay is a true community champion, taking it upon herself each year to organise the bridge club to support a worthy cause in the community and she is keen to leave a legacy, which she can enjoy for years to come, of an accessible venue for the Bridge Club.

CATHERINE (Kay) Davis is anything but ordinary, she turned 100 on 11 November and used her celebration party with the Tomaree Bridge Club to champion the elderly and less able in society.

In a stirring speech Kay stated that the Bridge Club needs accessible premises, one where all members can have access to the Club activities.

The Tomaree Bridge Club currently meets at the Elizabeth Waring room at the Tomaree Sports Fields.

While the facility has an access ramp it is a fifty metre uphill challenge, which not everyone is able to manage.

The Club currently has 160 members, of whom, over 20 are unable to attend due to accessibility issues.

WE’D like to introduce Kerry Schiemer.

Kerry is a very young 79 year old and still working in his chosen profession as a Pharmacist.

Kerry recalled how working in pharmacy is very different today to what it was when Kerry first graduated from his apprenticeship as a Pharmacist.

He used to compound pills, mix cough medicines and eye drops and now most medications are preprepared.

Kerry Schiemer told News Of The Area, “My dad was a farmer and I started school in the outback town of Hannah Ridge, I used to ride my horse to school and when it was time to go to High School I went to board at St Joseph’s College in Sydney.”

After that Kerry started his apprenticeship as a pharmacist in 1957 in Wallsend and studied at Sydney University.

Kerry was the second pharmacist to gain Guild Quality Care, the benchmark for community Pharmacists.

In 1992 he and his wife bought the Shoal Bay Pharmacy which they sold in

1999, and he was responsible for establishing many of the medication reviews for the residents of hostels and aged care homes in the region.

Kerry believes that at some stage he has worked in every pharmacy in the Bay. “I started to fly Tiger Moths in 1975 after I started flying in 1968 and was a regular flying out of Rutherford airstrip after the airstrip was moved from the location which is now the Knights home ground in Newcastle,” he said.

Kerry also performed acrobatics in the Tiger Moths and is a part of the Australian Tiger Moth Club.

He believes that he and his wife have been blessed with four children, two boys and two girls and 9 grandchildren and three great grandchildren in the family.

Kerry at one time was also an independent approved testing officer in charge of testing the ‘would be’ pilots prior to them receiving their pilot’s licence.

Port Authors’ Release Anthology

PORT writers have released an Anthology of works inspired by the sea, sun and sand.

The publication received $3000 in funding through a Port Stephens Council Cultural grant.

Humans Of The Area: Amazing Stories of Ordinary Local People

My PH, my dear man. Have you ever read those ‘What I ate today’ columns? I think they are all telling furphies. Don’t you agree that furphy is a wonderful word? How can a word that conjures up an image of a cute little gonk with downcast eyes be related to deception and trickery?

Now, in those ‘What I ate today’ columns in glossy magazines, they always interview supermodels and ballet dancers and C-grade celebrities who write books about paleo diets, and what they are basically saying via their self-righteous meal plan is that we mere mortals are blubber-guts with zero self control.

It is hard not to feel slightly pathetic, when you read about someone eating organic goji berries washed down with a kale smoothie for breakfast, a handful of hand-harvested sprouts with vitamin water for lunch and a probiotic drink for dinner, because the poor waif is so fatigued that the thought of cooking a decent meal is beyond them.

Everything in moderation is a cliché worth recalling in these times of trouble, Mr PH. There’s no point starving yourself until you turn into a raving lunatic at the local drive-through shouting, “Get me the family pack and make it snappy” and eating it in the shadowy depths of the car park, because you’re starving to death.

PS: I don’t think you are cheating on your wife unless your subterfuge involves the woman next door (who also has no willpower).

Outerphase is a Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and Central Coast Duo who combine the talents of Murray Byfield and Gary Boughton, playing all the great covers from the Rock Classics to present.

Gary has worked nationally with acts such as Back2Rock, Diversity and Cybercrystal and brings to the show an amazing guitar and vocal strength.

If you combine this with Murray, who delivers lead vocals and guitar, you’re in for a treat.

Murray is well known for his vast vocal range, which allows him to cover most musical styles with ease.

He has an uncanny ability to sound like the artist he is covering at the time, impressing audiences up and down the coast.

Outerphase caters for any venue, with either a complete acoustic set list for a more laid back atmosphere or a fully sequenced show that can have you dancing all night.

Aboriginal Art For Manly Warringah Sea Eagles explain, “Paths make their way to a maroon circle featuring the Sea

IT is a special occasion when you win an art competition, and even more so when your art will be used on the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles jersey for their 2017 Indigenous round.

This however is not the first time for Doris Glasson’s Aboriginal artwork to adorn sporting jerseys.

A different design has been used by the Nelson Bay Marlins AFL. Doris told News Of The Area, “It was my brother Hilton who brought the Sea Eagles competition to my attention.”

Doris explains the rationale behind her submission.

“I thought of the first time I ever saw the sea, and that was at Manly, the colours I chose were the Sea Eagles colours.”

“When I think of Manly, I see a beautiful beach, the blue represents the waves and the small bone dots the warm sand; The circles with dots represent the communities that proudly define the Northern Beaches with the U shapes representing the people that make up those communities.”

Doris then goes on to

Eagles logo, which represents Brookvale Oval; Manly’s spiritual gathering place.”

Doris’s artwork is by no means without deep meaning, which is what you would expect from an Aboriginal artist, each dot and swirl has a profound meaning.

Doris proudly displays her artwork at the Mater hospice and hospital, each with different meaning and colours, however, the one thing that is within each and every piece is a hidden dragonfly, this is her trademark, this stems from when she was playing down by the creek as a child an a dragonfly could always be seen and it reminds her of happy times.

Doris is originally from Gilgandra, NSW and belongs to the Wiradjuri clan and currently lives in Anna Bay where she has her studio for creating Aboriginal artwork called Mandaang Art.

THE body of missing snorkeler, Scott McGuire, was sadly found last week after over three days of searching.

Concerns for Mr McGuire were realised after he failed to return home on Sunday 19 November.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the search and

on the Wednesday (22 November) the search for the 29 year old we called off after a body was located.

The search found the body in the water off Robinson Reserve, Anna Bay. We send our sincere condolence to the Family and Friends of Scott McGuire

By David & Rhona BIRSS The 2017 Club Championships Results: Sunday 19th saw the completion of the 2017 Club Championship competitions with the concluding 4th round of the Mens’ Event. A large crowd gathered on the balcony of the new Clubhouse to watch the final group play out the 18th hole of the Mens’ Event. In the presentation that followed both the Ladies’ 2017 Champion, Jenny Frost, together with the Men’s 2017 Champion, Connor Benjamin,

were acknowledged by the Members. Jenny, who comes from a family that is deeply connected to the Club, won with a total, for the 4 rounds, of 352 from Rhondda Shaw on 353. Connor, who is still a Junior, with 298 won by an incredible 34 strokes. Mike Harris was Runner-up with 329. Connor’s achievement marks a major milestone in the history of the Club.

Congratulations to both players on their achievements in 2017 and continued success in 2018.
