WHILE Port Stephens is already seeing grant funded projects being rolled out at Nelson Bay and Anna Bay, Council is working hard to deliver to more of the villages within the Local Government Area(LGA).

Nelson Bay has landed two grants one for the upgrade of Apex Park and another for the street scaping of the township seeing an overall investment of $440,000 coming into the township.

Council has also applied for grants for Raymond Terrace for a $27 million dollar upgrade of William Street which if successful will see the street levelled

and the streetscape improved.

Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “Anna Bay and the South Tomaree Community Group has an upcoming meeting and the opportunity to review and upgrade the 2008 strategy, working with Sarah Smith and the Central Ward Councillors to identify areas which can be addressed.”

He believes this could unlock grant opportunities.

In Medowie there are expressions of interest open for blocks of land in the CBD where council is looking to do a similar development as they have in Salamander Bay’s main shopping precinct.

“This development would provide for much needed facilities in the Medowie CBD area,” he said.

Karuah is certainly a destination and council is as a priority looking for funds to upgrade the main street there as well.

Raymond Terrace has also received a grant for the first Big Belly Bin in Australia, the bin is a solar powered, WiFi enabled unit which rewards positive litter practices while compacting waste and it will even let Council know when it is full.

They believe that the funds are available through the Coastal Lands Protection Scheme which has a yearly budget of $3million or the Save Our Species Fund either of which the wetlands buyback would qualify for.

“The delay by the NSW Government in the buyback is costing our Council in

resources, Council staff and energy is being used to examine the second DA for Mambo, when we believe that in all sincerity the Government should have immediately asked the developer to withdraw his DA while negotiations continue,” she said.

Kate Washington member for Port Stephens said, “No Minister involved in the sale was prepared to defend their decision.”

“Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead was put forward to defend the indefensible,”

she said.

Catherine Cusack MLC told News Of The Area, “Kate Washington claims I “misled the Upper House” by allegedly blaming the community for not letting Ministers know the land was important.

“But that’s completely untrue.

“This is what I told the Upper House: “The members of Parliament involved lobbied the wrong Minister.

“Instead of the community petition being being tabled in Parliament,

it was misdirected to the Minister for Education.

“I welcome the fact Ms Washington has finally conceded she was the one who handed the petition to the wrong Minister, and urge her to retract the offensive allegations that I blamed the community and misled the Upper House.

The Love of Art

HELEN Love and Joana Johnston definitely have a love and talent for Art, and its on exhibition at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.

Helen Love has always been creative and had a strong desire to paint.

Over the years her talents have been taken up with developing small to medium size businesses, two of which she still runs today.

Nearly 10 years ago, her sister gave her a box of assorted painting materials for Christmas, an obvious push for her to start painting and follow her passion.

After doing many workshops here and throughout the Hunter, Helen has developed a taste in what she wants to paint and an ongoing thirst for more knowledge and different techniques.

With a keen sense of colour, creativity and a good dash of imagination, Helen’s

style is big and bold!

She likes to experiment with different effects.

Helen Love told News Of The Area, “My favoured mediums are inks, pastels and acrylics, Oh, and printing, encaustic art, drawing, air brush painting.”

Joana Johnston spent her the early years of her career

in the Hospitality Industry creating using her artistic flair to create boutique accommodation properties and creating innovative catering to corporate clients.

Changing direction of her artistic eye, Joana’s art encourages the viewer to study her work to discover the hidden objects.

Joana lives in Port Stephens and is currently exhibiting at the Artisan Collective, which has pieces on display on d’Albora Marinas and throughout shop windows in Nelson Bay and at The Port Stephens Community Art Centre Nelson Bay. Joana works in various media such as resin, acrylics, oils and yupo sculpture, often combining several mediums into

mixed media collage.

Currently, Joana is working on a yupo sculpture body of work to exhibited later in 2018 and she also

takes on commission pieces.

Both Joana and Helen’s works show a true love of art.

Innovative approach

Port Stephens Council’s innovative approach to mental health wins award

PORT Stephens Council has taken out the award for ‘Best Work Health and Safety Improvement (Large Organisation)’ at the 2018 Hunter Safety Awards for its leading workplace mental health program.

The program was developed in response to a review of Council’s existing mental health procedure, with an aim to reduce stigma, get people talking and provide highquality support to workers experiencing mental health issues.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s an incredible achievement for Council to be recognised for its progressive approach to mental health.

“Usually when people think about Work Health and Safety, they think of hard hats and hi-vis. At Port Stephens Council, we’ve moved beyond the physical to think about our workers’ overall health.

“We want to send our workers home in the same or better condition than how they

came to work – and that goes for mental health just as much as physical health,” Ms Le Grange said.

Ms Le Grange said this award win brings Council’s total to six safety-related awards in as many years.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised as a leader in the WHS space, but what’s really gratifying is the real and lasting changes we’ve been able to implement in our workplace.

“We set out to get people talking and reduce the stigma that so often comes with mental health, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that.

“But the job isn’t over – we’ll continually work to ensure that Council provides a platform for consistent and high quality management of mental health in our workplace,” she said.

The awards were announced on Friday 16 March and recognised companies and individuals in the Hunter region who demonstrated best-practice and innovative approaches in workplace health and safety.

Dogs communicate in lots of subtle and not-so-subtle ways, as I’m sure you know.

When they rip a hole in your new leather lounge, they are actually saying, “You know, I’m feeling a little bit disgruntled with the way you leave me at home all day, on my own, and you somehow think leaving the television going will make me think that you are still home. Well, I’m not quite that stupid.”

When they bring a furry and now unidentifiable creature to your doorstep, they are saying, “Sorry, for a moment there I actually thought I was a cat; I thought I was a feral cat, but now I remember I am a placid dog and I should just wait until 6.00pm when you serve me my kibble and mince.”

As dogs age, they slowly stop doing many of the things they used to do: making their own doggie doors in the flyscreen, jumping up on the legs of unsuspecting visitors, burying your old socks in the compost heap, salivating under the table as you try to enjoy dinner, and so on.

Instead, they take on mannerisms that match their age. They stare vacantly at open pastures, they sleep all day, they get stressed and start ‘sundowning’ at night, they lose their appetite, they hobble, they have more difficulty breathing and some even start slowly removing themselves from the family. With all these signs they are trying to say, “I still love you, but I’m really struggling, and if I could talk I would ask you to start considering whether I have the quality of life that I should have, or whether you are holding on for your benefit and not mine.”

Only you and your vet can make the ultimate decision, but I hope this has, in some small way, helped.

Bay Seniors Week Concert

SENIORS week is almost here and there are some fun and engaging activities around the Bay to enjoy.

The SeaSide Singers will again be hosting a concert and afternoon tea to help seniors in Port Stephens celebrate.

Numbers are limited to the first 100 lucky seniors who register to attend the concert that will be held in the Seascapes Room at Soldiers’ Point Bowling Club, from 2.00pm on Friday, 13 April. Entry is by donation.

To register to attend seniors will need to ring the Club on 49827173 and

register.

Jeanette Antrum OAM who has been a SeaSide Singer for many years told News Of The Area, “The choir encourages seniors to come along, sing with us, make friends and think about joining the choir to continue their interest in music on a year round basis.”

Jeanette who holds her OAM for services to aged care, believes that participating in activities like a community choir is good for health and wellbeing.

“Singing with the SeaSide Singers is a wonderful experience for our members,” she said.

The Seaside Singers will

be presenting some timeless songs, beautifully sung by your this community choir.

As usual the crew at the Seaside Singers will present some fun numbers as well.

The One Voice Survey conducted in 2016 found that singing bonds groups more quickly than other creative activities, building close personal ties with individuals.

Singing literally breaks the ice so that individuals feel closer to the group as a whole even if they do not yet know anything about the individual members.

Something Fishy About Port Stephens Probus

THERE’S been something fishy going on at the Probus Club of Port Stephens.

David Long took his fishing group to Taylors Beach to catch a fish or two and BBQ breakfast, however from all reports it was just as well they took the sausages along.

At least Mary Taylor had some success, with a small bream.

The Club has already racked up a number of activities for 2018 and members are enjoying the diverse choice of active and fun things to do.

Brenda has her social bowlers back for a monthly

rollup and the Probus inter club bowls has commenced their season.

The Walking group is trekking twice a month and Dining and Outings are being organized.

Meanwhile the snooker boys are potting black and it’s nearly time for another very popular BBQ and the fun golf and putt putt event.

The occasional social Croquet organized by David had a very enjoyable afternoon’s play and used strategies and tactics to win the game.

Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “There was lots of fun and fellowship at the Changeover lunch with over 100 members and guests in

attendance.”

This followed on from the AGM where President Ann Gibson was appointed for a second year.

“The club is thriving with 140 members at present with a hard working committee and great activity leaders and of course, the very friendly members.”

This club meets on the second Thursday of the month at Nelson Bay Bowling Club, from 9.30am.

THE Tomaree Hospital Auxiliary will have their annual Easter craft stall next Saturday, 31 March from 7am-1.30pm.

It will be set up in Stockton Street, Nelson Bay, opposite the Post Office.

These angels of the community raise vital funds to buy equipment and items for patients at

our local hospital.

On their current wishlist are: clinical storage units to be used in the emergency department; patient accessories and mattresses for the ward area; ceiling mounts and bracket units to be used for the new television upgrade within the ward area; and pathology specimen centrifuge for blood

spinning.

These items together cost well over $10k.

All the craft items for sale have been handmade by the volunteers and include babywear, knitted items, kitchen linen and many more.

THERE’S never been a doubt that the locals of Port Stephens are fans of our resident dolphins, and two of their biggest fans are about to launch their new factual book about bottlenose dolphins.

Bottlenose dolphins are the playful residents of Port Stephens, the dolphin capital of Australia, and they live

both here and in harbours around the world.

David Scott and Lesley Dutton of Medowie, have produced a book which shows the bottlenose dolphins as incredibly intelligent, playful and social mammals.

The authors are intimately involved with the dolphins of Port Stephens as the operators of Dolphin Swim Australia which enables

people to join dolphins in the water, hearing, seeing and interacting with the pod as they cruise off the coast of Port Stephens.

The book ‘A Book About Dolphins, Things You Might Not Know’ features information about the bottlenose dolphins including their communication methods, sleep, and the joy that they take in surfing the waves, blowing bubbles and even their enjoyment of sex.

Co-Author David Scott told News Of The Area, “This book is generic and not specifically about the bottlenose dolphins of Port Stephens, but the behaviours of bottlenose dolphins anywhere in the world.”

David and Lesley are very proud of their first book, and that it is printed on recycled paper using environmentally friendly dies and printed by an Eco Friendly printer.

The book will be launched by Port Stephens MP Kate Washington at the Port Stephens Visitors Information Centre on 29 November at 2.30pm.

Tomaree Probus Getting Busy

THE members of Tomaree Probus Club have held their annual changeover lunch and are all set to get into a busy calendar of events for 2018.

Eighty six Tomaree Probus members and partners enjoyed the annual changeover luncheon at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

Retiring president, Wayne Dunn introduced the incoming president Mike Mobbs and all new executive and activity organisers.

The new office bearers and committee elected include Mike Mobbs President, Bob Huggett Vice President and Secretary, Wayne Dunn immediate past president, and Don Jones editor, along with Roy Leahy,

Grahame Tricker, John Sully, Fred Pulis, Terry Beaumont, Don Bourquin, Kevin Sharman, John Bell, David Diemar, Jim Mackney, Len Graff, Graham Moore, Sandy Kerr and Richard Logan.

The team are ready for some great fun activities to suit all budgets.

They offer a regular computer group session for only $2, and BBQ’s from $7.50.

Tomaree Probus Club are even planning a trip to Norfolk Island.

On a more modest level to the Norfolk Island trip, the club has snooker, walks, croquet, bike rides, caravan trips and wine appreciation, all on the upcoming program.

Oats X to go wild in IRC title race at Sail Port Stephens

WILD Oats wines and bubbles have graced Sail Port Stephens for many years but now the regatta is getting a taste of the ‘real thing’ – Wild Oats X is lining up for the prestigious NSW IRC Championship for the first time.

Sandy Oatley family’s canting-keeled Reichel-Pugh 66 belied its size and vintage in the Rolex Sydney-Hobart and, as the largest entry in Sail Port Stephens’ 11-year history, will be firm line-honours favourite in IRC. “We’ve been watching this regatta grow for a number of years now,” program manager Paul Magee says. “We are really excited to be competing there this year, especially after a great race south to Hobart.”

A hot field of TP52s are again expected to vie for overall honours after RKO tkoed the fleet in 2017.

Regatta patron Matt Allen is bringing his new gun to the next knife fight, itching to be ‘number one’ again aboard the Botin 52. With SydneyHobart and 2018 Australian Yachting Championship titles already in the bag, the NSW championship would give Allen the trifecta of ‘majors’.

Marcus Blackmore has entered his own Botin TP, Hooligan, which won the Sydney Harbour Regatta’s Open Class Division 1 with four bullets.

FINGAL Bay Bowling Sport Club members are feeling pretty chuffed with themselves after their ladies teams won the Newcastle District Pennant.

Club President Joan McLeod was a part of the winning team, that had a strong win against Lambton Park at New Lambton Bowling Club.

The winning teams were made up of Joan McLeod, Ann Ible, Margaret Gallagher, Lorretta Halpin, Kerry McFadden, Cheryl Johnstone, Helen Brunt and Claudia Perin.

Joan McLeod told News Of The Area, “It was a good win, we did better than we thought with a very strong team.”

The club had a previous win of the Pennant in 2016 and the ladies are now off CONTINUED Page 7
